Beat the summer crowds during Provence’s biggest event of the summer by discovering Vaucluse’s hidden gems and preserved beauty.

Did you know that Eurostar is running a service from London to Avignon over the summer? The Avignon Festival in July is one of France’s most popular events. It’ll draw artists and spectators from around the world for around 40 theatre and dance performances taking place throughout the town for as a sort of artistic open-air forum. The OFF Avignon Festival will also be running parallel to it with amazing theatre performances.

With all the hype of the events, it would be easy to miss the charm of Provence that lies just outside of the city, which is why I’ve decided to hand pick three villages a short distance away from Avignon. All of them have their own individual charm and character which will give you a different perspective on Provence – and surely make you fall in love at the same time! The area has stunning B&Bs from 50€ a night which can be perused on provenceguide.com.

Region of Vaucluse: Postcard Provence

Vaucluse is one of the regions that many picture when the area of Provence comes to mind: perched rustic villages, transparent rivers, sounds of cicadas drifting along the warm summer breeze and the smell of ripening fruit from the blossoming fruit trees. It’s home to the popular region of the Luberon where some of the area’s most beautiful villages and landscapes can be found. These famous villages include the neighbouring towns of Isle-sur-Sorgue, Fontaine de Vaucluse and Roussillon.

L’Isle sur Sorgue: Antique capital of Provence

When you hear the soft sounds of running water, you know you’re approaching L’Isle sur Sorgue. A small town famous for being the antiques capital of Provence, it’s known as the ‘island on the Sorgue’ and as the ‘Provencal Venice’. Grouped into ‘villages’, the antique shops, art galleries and interior décor shops are an attraction of their own. There are also a number of waterside cafés and restaurants within walking distance from each other, flea markets most Sundays and attractive water wheels throughout the town which are still in working order. On a bright summer’s day, you can amble down the banks of the river to people watch, listening to the sounds of the water going through the water wheels and stopping to buy a charming little trinket.

Fontaine de Vaucluse: Source of Spring

A little ways away from l’Isle sur la Sorgue to the East lies Fontaine de Vaucluse, a town with 600 inhabitants and built around a spring in a valley at the foot of the Vaucluse mountains. The fountain, or spring, is located at the foot of a steep clef 230 metres high, is the biggest spring in France – even Jacques Cousteau couldn’t find the source’s depths when he ventured himself. It is also the fifth largest in the world with an annual flow of 630 million cubic metres. The Spring and the beautiful emerald-coloured Sorgue river which runs through the town have thus drawn visitors in droves. There is also an ancient paper mill and Santon museum in the town.

Roussillon: Technicolour Ochre

At a short 30 minute drive from Fontaine de Vaucluse lies Roussillon. The small village is famed for its 17 ranges of ochre daubed across its houses and the flamboyant technicolour trail that is often compared to Colorado. In Roussillon, red, yellows, oranges and pinks merge into each other as you wander into the spiralling streets. For a little bit of insider knowledge, Roussillon’s ochre quarry was one of the most significant ochre deposits and over the years, all its surrounding fields have turned a reddish orange. Today, the disused quarry is best described as other-wordly, with cliffs and caverns, steeples and ridges. The quarry itself is a starting point for a footpath that continues for 15km to the Colorado de Rustrel quarry, a spectacular natural wonder which has been used as the set for many films.

However, no trip through Provence would be complete without a stop at the poshest towns of all: Gordes and the ‘Maisons Des Bories’ with its exceptional heritage, Ansouis Castle which has remained in the same family hands for centuries or, on the west side of the Rhone, St.-Remy-de-Provence and the Baux de Provence.

The popularity of these towns peaks during the summer, along with the temperatures. That’s why it’s recommended that you visit early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the sweltering heat and crowds!

Bon Voyage!

In November 2011, I had a dream… the 1st French Press Awards took place at the Spencer House, in all the splendour and pageantry of such a prestigious evening.

Another year has gone by and another dazzling array of articles, both printed and online, about France has published.

Over 5,000 articles were published in 2012 alone in both national and regional publications. To put it another way, articles on tourism in France reached a circulation of over 1.7 billion!

As Head of the PR department of Atout France in the UK, I would therefore like to thank you – the journalists – for your outstanding editorial coverage, which contributes enormously to the promotion of France as a holiday destination for every type of reader, no matter what their interests

This is all thanks to the work of Tour Operators and French Tourist Boards and Tourist Offices’ hospitality, and actually, a little bit of my team’s efforts to support the press in its endeavours to France.

The ‘More to Enjoy’ campaign

This year the Awards were also the opportunity to celebrate the ‘More to Enjoy’ campaign.

For the first time ever, Atout France, the France tourism development agency in Great Britain, have been able to federate 37 tourist boards, 2 carriers, 8 tour operators and TV5 monde (the French TV Channel) within a unique advertising campaign to promote EXPERIENCES in France

With more than £1 million budget, the ‘More to Enjoy’ campaign has been hugely visible throughout the London underground, national press and online media for 4 months, with the main website: www.gotofrancenow.com

Through various activity-based slogans and concepts, the campaign has aimed to translate a fun and dynamic France for British visitors, one of its main target markets, through original experiences along with the well-established landmarks.

The Awards’ selection process

Over 100 articles were submitted from across the UK media, which when coupled with our own intense scan for the best travel articles on France, made the shortlist selection process all the more difficult. The calibre of writing, along with your ability to speak directly to your audience about your experiences in France, was certainly remarkable.

A jury of experts, and the Atout France team, pre-selected articles according to the campaign’s themes: Waterside Activities, Nature & Outdoors, Gastronomy, Golf, Festivals & Events, Art & Culture, City Breaks, Seaside Lifestyle and Wine Tourism. These themes had been selected as the best representations of what makes France so special. Once the nominees were chosen, the articles were posted on the Atout France UK Facebook page where the general public chose the winners with nearly 9,000 votes!

Here are a few highlights with a bit of noteworthy information you shouldn’t miss.

Architecture

Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine (Paris)

This museum is housed in an entire wing of the Chaillot Palace. Its artefacts cover 1,000 years of history representing societal and religious edifices such as the Chartes Cathedral doors. On top of this, it also houses the modern and contemporary architecture gallery with homes dating back to 1850 to today including apartments from the Cité Radieuse from Le Corbusier (in Marseille).

Centre Pompidou de Metz (Lorraine)

Although this museum has a following out of its own merit, it draws a lot of attention just from its architecture, the designs of which were drawn up by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban and French architect Jean des Gastines.

Bercy: the French film library,
Cinémathèque Française (architect Gehry)

Antique Theatre of Orange (Provence)

Thanks to Didier Repellin’s new project, the theatre is combining its history and its future with a massive new roof made out of glass and steel which has a weight half that of its equivalent in wood.

Louvre-Lens Museum (Nord-Pas de Calais)

Brand new for 2013, the building for the museum was designed by Japanese company Sanaa. The building is made out of glass and metal which allows for extremely sophisticated lines that complement the simple geometric shapes.

Nantes and its Island (Western Loire)

Nantes’s project to renovate its island is one of the largest of Europe’s urban projects. The architecture of the buildings is designed by some of the industry’s greatest such as Dominique Perrault and Nicholas Michelin.

Music and Film

Cinémathèque Française (Paris)

Originally also housed in the Chaillot Palace, this is the most important document library on French cinema. If French movies are your jig, you’ll definitely want to pay this place a visit.

Cité de la Musique (Paris)

This museum opened in 1995 and has recently been updated. Here, you’ll find over 1,000 instruments and rare and unusual art objects. Some of them were event used by famous entities such as Django Reinhardt or Chopin!

Fine Arts

Main hall of the Musée d’Orsay (7th arrondissement).
The former Orsay railway station,
inaugurated for the Universal Exhibition of 1900,
was converted into a museum in the 1960s.

Musée d’Orsay (Paris)

Centre Pompidou (Paris)

Inaugurated in 1977 with a design drawn up by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, this is the must-see museum for 20th century modern art and architecture. It’s home to a new exhibition with collections from 1905 to 1960. You also have themed rooms such as historical including ‘Le Corbusier’, ‘Esprit Nouveau’, thematic such as ‘Biomorphism’ and multidisciplinary such as ‘Italy 1950-60’ and ‘art & design’.

This exhibition centre is the only one entirely and permanently dedicated to the Master of surrealism in France.

One month left until the first actors step onto the famous red carpet where the spectators will line the streets for hours to catch a glimpse…

Jacqueline

Everyone knows that I was born and grew up in Nice, next door to Cannes and its International Film Festival. Obviously, it’s always been one of the main spots in May.

The first time I went there was when I was at University – at least I had a car to drive me there with my classmates!

One of our mates was the Sous-Prefet’s son: he had all the contacts to get into the VIP area, but we only had the privilege of being a part of the crowd and looking over at him in his splendid white tuxedo! I would say that we were not completely alone in this crowd, and some decades later, it’s still the same: people queuing for hours with stalls, even ladders, standing on the pavement, under the sun or in the rain (check it for yourself – it rains most of the time on the opening evening!).

Definitely an amazing atmosphere!

Later on, I had a flat in Cannes, so I was at the heart of the action: traffic jams, police everywhere, giant posters lining the walls, yachts, overcrowded restaurant terraces (and overpriced!), every beach reserved for parties…and yet, the same crowd waiting on the pavement in front of the windows of Gucci, Hermes, Vuitton…

The rule is simple: to see, and to be seen.

Some of you may have heard of the TV show Entourage and I find that the concept behind it doesn’t just apply to Hollywood. There’s an entire backstory to the Festival that I found resembled that of Hollywood’s. In a sense, you could say that the festival could be a film in itself and I felt like I’d been drawn into the plotline. Maybe one of the actors, perhaps?

There is certainly glamour, yes of course, but there is also a very complex scene behind the curtain….

Anyway, I remember a very special moment: on the 50th anniversary of the Festival, there was an auction of the original posters created throughout the years. It happened at the Club Med 1. I was on the tender that took us from the shore to the cruise ship with Gina Lollobrigida, some Hollywood producers who still dared to smoke cigars…

It was really a great emotional moment. Everything was perfect, everyone was beautiful, the sun was radiant, I thought I was a star too …so when the poster of my birthday year arrived at the auction, I definitely wanted to get it….

However, I wasn’t really a star – just a little Niçoise who was lucky enough to be part of the show for a moment…

Tiffany

As I stepped up the red carpet on that warm May evening at 19.15, I saw the flashes of the cameras and the screaming of the crowds. It really was everything that I had imagined it would be. Sitting down in the Palais des Festivals, seeing the leading actors making their way down to the VIP seats whilst the rest of the audience clapped, I thought that this was a moment to remember… and brag about. I attended the Cannes Film Festival in 2009 and I will cherish those memories for years to come.

The days were spent queuing under the bright sun for various movies, occasionally stopping on the public beaches to ogle at the yachts either anchored on the harbour or out on the Med. Those of us who ventured into the different international tents designated for their respective national press, we were greeted with a relaxed but exclusive networking atmosphere.

Beyond the silver screen

The bars along the Croisette were filled with visitors, press, tour groups, students etc. The luxury boutiques were also hopping with shoppers buying their red carpet gowns and suits. Whether we were there for the films, the ambiance, or the town itself, it seemed everyone and everything was buzzing with excitement.

The festival is widely known to be exclusively for industry professionals and the press which adds to its prestige.

Do like the greats do

Celebrity spotting is also rampant during the festival. I was so excited myself when I saw the cast of a film I’d watched a couple of days before that I shouted “I Love You!” as they walked by. I guess I got carried away in the moment. But that’s what happens when you’re there.

Hotels well known to play host to the visiting celebrities are the Majestic, the Martinez and the Carlton. All on the Boulevard de la Croisette, they each have their own private beaches, renowned restaurants and luxury spas. So, if you can’t necessarily stay in the same hotel as the stars, you can certainly try to have a cocktail alongside them.

Glamorous escapes

If you’d like to be one of the water skiers at whom I jealously looked across the sea, a number of companies operate to help facilitate your 007 wishes, or you could just rent one of the fabulous yachts and find yourself next to Oscar de la Renta’s (whose boat you can’t miss as it’s a striking medley of green, purple and leopard print).

If you’d like to get a bit more exploring under your belt, you could head off the see the Lerins Islands to taste monk-produced wine (that’s religious monks, not monkfish). Or, you can discover the mystery of the Man in the Iron Mask after having a run-in with Leo himself at his movie screening. Ok, so that last bit may be a bit hopeful but it would be ideal, wouldn’t it? A great conversation starter…

So now you know that you don’t have to be a celebrity to enjoy the Cannes Film Festival, why not start booking your yacht now and see who you end up next to?

Formal French Gardens

Usually, French Gardens are known for their precision and geometry. For example, the Versailles Gardens set the standards for European courtyards in the 17th century based on its grandeur, regular linear shapes, extensive waterworks and variety of plant species.

Most have heard of and perhaps even visited the gardens of Versailles, Vaux-le-Vicomte or Fontainebleau. These landmark gardens were designed by none other than André le Nôtre whose other creations include Chantilly and Tuileries gardens – he even drew up plans for Greenwich Park in London!

France, of course can’t compete with the United Kingdom on the number of parks and gardens in the cities. The urban developments have been quite different. But despite the Baron Haussman and his influence on the design of Paris, the Jardins du Luxembourg, the Parc Monceau, Parc Montsouris, Parc de Bagatelle, the Buttes Chaumont, the Champs de Mars, the Esplanades des Invalides, the Trocadero and the Jardin du Ranelagh are some of the capital’s gems that have survived and flourished along the years.

Since Le Nôtre…

Gardening is France is as much an art form as it is in England. The variety of landscapes and climates offer great opportunities in each region to grow all kinds of plants and develop a wide variety of landscape architecture.

One of the most famous gardens in France is Claude Monet’s garden of Giverny. I will never forget walking with my parents as a child and seeing amateur painters drawing their own impressionist renditions of the water lilies, then getting lost amongst the array of colours in the water garden. It really is one of France’s most visually striking gardens, both from an artistic perspective and an every day one.

There is also the Domaine du Rayol, in the Var, which overlooks the stunning islands of Hyères-les-Palmiers. This garden has been developed to represent as much of the world’s biodiversity as possible and thus divided into 11 different areas including Canary, California, South Africa, Australian, Subtropical Asian, New Zealand, Chilean and Marine Garden. Overall, this is a 20 hectare conservation area, 7 hectares of which are landscaped gardens. Of course, the domain runs events and workshops throughout the year.

Remarkable Gardens of France

Today, France’s most prized gardens are protected and promoted by an association called ‘Remarkable Gardens of France’ which represents over 360 gardens. This includes everything from Contemporary, to Botanical, to Arboretum or even English gardens.

To honour this, France puts on a number of different events throughout the country, many of them around May and June, to celebrate its natural assets, both wild and tamed by human hands.

Here are some event highlights:

The International Garden Festival at the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire is a veritable symphony of green from 24/04/2013 to 31/08/2013.

On display will be 26 different conceptual gardening creations each showcased in individual tents. The designs have been selected from hundreds of international submissions by a jury presided by literary journalist Bernard Pivot. This year’s theme ‘gardens of sensations’ will bring a mini-version of the world to its visitors.

The Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire is 20km south of Paris and is home to a beautiful chateau which dates back to the 10th century. Today, it displays a romantic Renaissance architecture and hosts a variety of cultural and artistic events throughout the year.

The annual Fête de la Nature is focusing on small creatures for 2013 and will be celebrated around France through 800+ events. This could be anything from a nature walk and insect workshops, to exhibitions and games, from shows to festivals. One of this year’s sites who will be taking part in the festivities is none other than the Thoiry Park and Chateau.

France’s equivalent to Longleat is the Thoiry Park and Chateau. To celebrate the national fete this year, they will be creating a habitat in their ecological ark with 70 different species of invertebrates and amphibians. Other species at the park include snow leopards, elephants and lions! Alongside the expansive zoo, the chateau itself is a wonderful historical gallery to visit and there is even a maze for the brave souls out there.

Since 2002, the French Ministry for Culture and Communications has been organising ‘Rendez-Vous aux Jardins’ alongside the Parks and Gardens of France committee, the Old French Homes association – La Demeure Historique - and France’s Centre for National Monuments. Always taking place during the first weekend of June, around 2,200 parks and gardens (both private and public) will open their doors for 3 consecutive days to the public with events, conferences and workshops for the whole family.

This year’s theme “The garden and its creators” will celebrate the 400th birthday of André le Nôtre (who was the principal gardener of King Louis XIV). The Chateau du Rivau will celebrate from 31 May to 2 June through its own magical garden. The programme will include guided visits, costumes and fairy tales, conferences and even rose and other flower-based cooking lessons. The medieval castle on the grounds has a majestic keep and intimidating drawbridge to stay in line with its fantasy-like feel.

So now you know why France’s gardens are so renowned and where to go to celebrate your love for nature whilst maybe discovering a different side of France. And don’t forget to leave us your comments!

Cream masts. Turquoise waters. White crests. Azur skies. Why, it’s Corsica of course!

Less than three hours from Old Blighty, you feel the sea mist spraying on your face as you tighten the rope, the warm breeze caresses your skin as you wipe the sweat from your brow and pause for a mere moment to gape at the beautiful backdrop. In fact, you can also hear the crowds cheering.

Perhaps it sounds like a dream, but this moment becomes very real for those who attend the international Imperial Regattas in Ajaccio. For both competitors and onlookers, the setting for the prestigious competition only adds to its clout.

The yacht races

From 20-26 May 2013, the 11th edition of the Imperial Regattas will take place in the gulf of Ajaccio, ideally located because of the wind direction. This is the premier yacht racing event in the Mediterranean which will draw over 320 sailors from around the world for a 30 yacht race.

The races will kick off every morning at 11am, going around the Sanguinary Islands, to conclude with a programme of entertainment to follow including exhibitions, concerts, shows, tastings and themed dinners.

And after the race…

On top of the sailors themselves, 5,000 visitors will congregate for the event at the ‘village’ ho used in the Palais des Congres et des Exposition. As the event is sponsored by Air France & KLM, attendees will also have the possibility of getting discounts on flights during the event period.

Ajaccio: a traditional town with lots of sun

Originally a Genoese settlement from the 15th century, Ajaccio is the capital and largest city of Corsica. Its centre holds the most interest with its cluster of old streets opening out onto the seafront through the modern harbour and marina surrounded by charming restaurants. The city is also known for having some of the best weather around with 2,700 hours of sun per year!

And let’s not forget that Ajaccio is Napoleon Bonaparte’s hometown so you are never short of seeing someone dressed up like him!

Ajaccio is surrounded by valleys and outlying vineyards, mountain towns, along with expansive lakes and dense maquis (that’s Corsican forests!). And if you look across the sea, you can see the striking Sanguinary Islands whose deep red colour leaps out at onlookers at sunset.

More events in Ajaccio

If you’re looking for some events enjoy outside of the race, why not try the following:

The Musée Fesch, Ajaccio’s Fine Arts Museum, will host the ‘Sérénade et airs d’opéras’ concert on 26 May. The concert will be played by the group ‘Ensemble Instrumental de Corse’, an octet of wind instruments.

On 26 May, Ajaccio will celebrate Nature at the ‘Grand site de la Parata’, a protected area, at the ‘Fête de la Nature – Les petites Bêtes et Cie au Grand Site de la Parata’. The programme will include: ‘The Corsican Bee’: catch and observe the little seaside critters. This will be an exhibition on the island’s protected insects and a workshop on learning how to recognise and observe the insects.

The Fesch library will host the exhibition ‘La representation de la Corse dans les livres anciens du Fonds Patrimonial’ (Corsica represented in ancient books from the heritage archives) from March to December 2013.

Looking for a bed and some supper?

At about one kilometre of the centre of Ajaccio stands Hôtel Les Mouettes. This 19th century building, now a four star hotel, is an establishment that embraces the Riviera spirit whilst maintaining its original charms and prides itself as being not so much a hotel but a beautiful summer home with character

Hyères-les-Palmiers is a city which has been a little bit like a sleeping beauty for some decades. After the glorious 30s which had most authors, painters and artists visiting Marie-Laure de Noailles in her new and stylish art deco villa or Edith Warton in her summer villa Sainte Claire and winter villa Pavillon Colombe.

The Noailles were heavily involved in the contemporary art world as they were good friends of artist-filmmaker Jean Cocteau and Charles de Noailles commissioned a portrait of his wife by Pablo Picasso. During the 1920s and 30s, Charles and Marie-Laure supported film projects by Man Ray, Salvador Dali and Luis Buñuel.

After WWII, Hyères-les-Palmiers fell asleep under the shadows of its thousands of palm trees and orange trees along most of its streets.

The turn of the 21st century

The first time I went, it was in the early 90s and my immediate thought was “Meh – get me out of here, it’s a typical provincial town”. Then, I came back in 2002 and I was amazed. The Villa Noailles was being restored, wonderful yachts were anchored in the harbour – new developments were everywhere. But there still was the charm of a protected area with a strong culture. This is the cultural aim of the city which is emerging today. Such a wonderful heritage would not die.

I was on holiday there last summer with my family and, although we’ve been around the world, I can assure you we all fell under the charm of the area.

So today, I would like to invite you to discover this city through its main event.

International Festival of Fashion and Photography

2013 is bringing us the 28th edition of the International Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyères-les-Palmiers from 26-29 April. Created by Jean-Pierre Blanc (who has been director since 1997), the internationally renowned artistic festival has shown the first collections of 300 young designers from around the world as well as that of 130 young photographers.

Part of this Festival will include a 3 day fashion competition where selected designers will put their work on display to a jury panel composed of industry professionals followed by an open audience. Famous designers have come out of this contest including Viktor & Rolf, Gaspard Yurkievich and Anke Loh. First prize winners will receive financial support to assist with the evolution of their creations.

Today, Hyères-les-Palmiers, the town famed for its 8,000 palm trees, turquoise waters and beautiful multi-coloured townscapes is also a buzzing cultural centre. Every spring, the Villa Noailles hosts this event as part of its exciting annual programme bringing together 10 emerging designers and 10 emerging photographers to bring their work to the world stage.

Fashion designer competition

The runway shows will be from 10-13 April although tickets will need to be booked in advance for those.

This year’s 10 selected designers are:

Tomas Berzins & Victoria Feldman, Latvia – Russia

Henning Jurke, Germany

Camille Kunz, Switzerland

But if you don’t know who the French Heritage and Culture Association, let us briefly introduce you to them with a few facts:

It was originally created in 1992 to unite 52 organisations and sites wishing to promote French heritage internationally. Today, the association represents over 40,000 protected sites and monuments across France that symbolise the country’s cultural wealth and diversity.

Overall, this includes 33 UNESCO world heritage sites, 8,000 museums and almost 500 festivals!

So what does it all mean, you ask?

Well, it means you’ve got endless ways of discovering France.
