MODIS stands for MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. The MODIS instrument is on board NASA’s Earth Observing System (EOS) Terra (EOS AM) and Aqua (EOS PM) satellites. The orbit of the Terra satellite goes from north to south across the equator in the morning with a 10:30am and 10:30pm equatorial overpass and Aqua passes south to north over the equator in the afternoon with a 1:30pm and 1:30am equatorial overpass resulting in global coverage every 1 to 2 days. ESRI's mobile team announced the release of ArcGIS for Windows Mobile 10.2;

The Mobile team has released version 10.2 of ArcGIS for Windows Mobile and it is now available from our Customer Care Portal! You can sign in and download it right now!Here are a few of the key new features in this release:

Search Task enhancements – as a field manager you can define how the field worker searches for data in their map. We have improved that capability so that when a field worker taps on a query that it will prompt them to enter a value for a specific field. This is called a “user defined” field.
Feature Editing Control – a common field task is the need to update the information about an asset or feature in the field. As a field manager, a common request is to restrict the editing to the form/attributes only and not allow the field worker to change the location of the feature. So now as a field manager, when you define the editing behavior for a layer in the Mobile Project Center you can constrain updates to attributes only.
Improved Routing capabilities – using the Streetmap For Mobile data, you can route and geocode to the location of your field work using the Windows version of the field app when fully disconnected from a network. With this release we have improved the way we solve a route. Often the location that you want to route to is off-road and if in a rural location it could be far away from the road network. We have exposed the search radius so when trying to solve a route in remote areas you can bump up the search distance.
Improved Address search – using the Streetmap for Mobile data you can now search for address locations or even cross streets when fully disconnected from a network. This greatly improves the overall experience of searching for and routing to your field work.

Both the ArcGIS for Windows Mobile app install and the Runtime SDK are available for download. All 10 supported languages are available (English, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

Democracy can be messy, of course, and the usual unsatisfying prescription for addressing its flaws is to wait until the next election, or the one after that, or maybe the one your children’s children will vote in decades hence, when politicians will surely be more upstanding than today’s jackals. Then you’ll be able to throw the bums out and send better people to Washington. But the retail sector may have a better model, which works for Amazon (AMZN) and Walmart (WMT) and Apple (AAPL) and any company, really, that cares about its customers: If you screw up, offer them a refund.

This would be simple to do. For every day the government is shut down, every American's 2013 tax bill would be reduced by one day's worth of income taxes. Here’s the math. The average family earns about $50,000 per year and pays about 12 percent of that in federal taxes. That works out to about $16 a day. Might not sound like much, but a two-week shutdown would generate a rebate of about $230. If you earn $100,000, the rebate would be close to $500. If the shutdown lasts for a month, you’d be pushing a $1000 rebate.

Americans may be bitterly divided on most political issues, but there’s near-universal agreement that Congress has screwed up. The legislature’s approval rating is as low as 5 percent, which is so low that Congressional employees and their families may be the only people in America telling pollsters they’re favorably impressed by Congress. Organizations that Americans usually disdain the most—banks, airlines, cable companies—belong on the customer-service All-Star team, compared with Congress.

ArcGIS server 10.1 makes it very easy to publish secure services. Consuming these services in a secure way especially if you are restricting access to certain active directory groups is still bit a challenge, especially if you are out of Microsoft’s .Net domain.

I wanted to access my secure service in an ArcGIS viewer for Flex based application and restricts user’s access to only a single active directory group. After some brain storming, I found a very easy, not perfect solution, “IIS 7.0 URL Authorization”.

IIS URL Authorization allows you to put authorization rule on actual URL instead of the underlying file system resources. Here is a very interesting post that explains step by step instruction to implement URL authorization.

Browser Caching with HTTP Rest Service

I have a HTTP REST service that query point data from a sql database. I noticed that in IE it was not pulling the uptodate content and just showing the cache. Clearning cache manually every time you insert or add was not something I wanted users to do. After some reasearch, I added these two lines and it worked..no more browser caching...

New GUI for ArcSDE Adminstration

ESRI's geodatabase team has developed and released GUI based database administration tools, very cool and impressive. They consolidated many routine and essential administrative tasks into a tasty new GUI called the Geodatabase Administration dialog.

Here are some of the New Features:

Simplified management of versions

View all versions in the geodatabase in a list, as a version tree, or in recommended reconcile order
Filter and sort versions by name, owner, and date modified
Easily view and change version properties such as name, description and access privileges
Just right click to create, delete, and reconcile versions
Simple management of historical versions and their properties
Launch the new reconcile versions tool and batch reconcile many or all versions at once

View all locks in the geodatabase

See what objects are locked in the geodatabase
Filter by object type, lock type, and lock owner
Administrators can disconnect users holding locks

Manage user connections (administrator only)

See all users connected to the geodatabase
Disconnect a user connected through a direct connect or application server connection

At the 3.0 release, ArcGIS for Windows Mobile (formerly ArcGIS Mobile) includes significant enhancements, changes, and user experience improvements, which are described in this topic.

Installation changes

ArcGIS for Windows Mobile now comes with two installation programs (setups), one that contains all the applications you need to build mobile solutions and one for the software development kit (SDK), ArcGIS Runtime SDK for Windows Mobile. The SDK is for programmers to extend (customize tasks and extensions for) the ready-to-deploy field applications (the ArcGIS application) or to develop their own SDK applications.
If you have ArcGIS for Desktop, you can install geoprocessing tools that work with both the 10.0 and 10.1 versions of ArcGIS for Desktop.

Enhancements and changes with building projects

You can:

Simplify your field deployments by including mobile caches, basemaps, and project extensions inside the mobile projects you create and package rather than having to deploy them separately.
Ensure the integrity of your field projects by detecting issues with your field projects before deploying them using the validation framework in the Mobile Project Center.
Simplify the field synchronization process for your field staff by qualifying the behavior of map layers in the Mobile Project Center.
Upload and share projects and data for download by devices using ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, and Portal for ArcGIS.

Mobile Project Center

Set up field autopopulation when your field workers create or update features using a set of built-in variables, or define your own variables using custom extensions.
Project user identity mechanism is now realized by Identity layer.
Less restriction on the schema of a field crew layer or logging layer.
Package data from a mobile map service before project deployment.
Set feature layer by its purpose and significantly simplify configuration workflow.
Support of tile package in addition to tiled dataset and StreetMap for Windows Mobile as basemaps.
Flexibility to add a basemap by reference or by copying a basemap to a mobile project.
Maintain basemap catalogs to quickly add references to commonly used tiled and streetmap datasets.
Project validation with detail information about the cause and possible solutions for project issues.
Inclusion of all operational layers, basemap (optional), and custom extensions or tasks as one item for deployment.
Share and download projects to and from ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, and Portal for ArcGIS.

Integration with ArcGIS for Desktop

Support attachments with Create Mobile Cache Tool and Synchronize Mobile Cache Tool.
Support tile package and tiled dataset as offline basemaps.
Provide Mobile Analyzer when publishing a mobile map service on ArcGIS for Desktop.

Mobile Content Server

Support synchronization of features and attachments through a mobile map service or the Synchronize Mobile Cache Tool.
Mobile content server inherits same role-based security model from ArcGIS Server. At a minimum, User role type is required to download projects.
Remove custom extent requirements when authoring map documents for mobile solutions. If no custom full extent is set, the extent defined by a map document's spatial reference is used.

Changes to the ArcGIS application for Windows Mobile devices

As a field worker, you can:

Configure your Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver for use with ArcGIS.
Use a camera to attach photos or video to a feature using geodatabase attachments.
Browse the file system and attach media to a feature.
Download and upload media attached to a feature.
Update the geometry of an existing features (extend, re-collect, replace portion).
Automatically populate attribute values (user identity, machine details, GPS details) when collecting and editing features.
Create new features using a simplified workflow that streamlines repetitive tasks.
Streamline the download of projects by setting the project's default source location.
Discover details about the current project (data sources, extensions used, and so on).
Set a coordinate system format to be used across the application.
Navigate to the location of a feature.
Replace GPS averaging method with a single shot GPS location.
View GPS position details on top of the map whenever displayed using the GPS Info Bar.
Use a simplified synchronization workflow that gives you the options for both upload and download.
Standardize the units used across the application for your project needs.

As a field worker, you can:

Browse the file system and attach files to features.
Download and upload files attached to features.
Automatically populate attribute values (user identity, machine details, and GPS details) when collecting and editing features.

Replace GPS averaging method with a single shot GPS location.
Accurately snap to features when sketching based upon what you currently see and zoom to on the map.
Standardize the units used across the application for your project needs.

Provide Rest API for CatalogServices namespace.
New operations exposed in Geometries namespace for buffer, union, cut, and so on.

For past year or so I worked a lot with EXT JS and was very happy with documentation and tools that are available. For my GIS work, I am a bigFlex Addict and use it extensively. For this project, I wanted to give ESRI's Javascript API a shot and I was shocked. Look like that ESRI is giving everybody a fish, rather than teaching them how to fish (more dijits than methods/properties/events). They got dijit for everything, use it or go somewhere else...
Also, I found that dojo's documentation is so poorly managed and it is almost impossible to find what really want. Examples are limited and most of the time are more like hello world type thing...I hope someone from dojo will look at EXT's documentation and will learn something....lets hope so

After three days I was able to do what I wanted to do...

added a button, called Identify, when clicked add onClick event to map
when click on map, it remove the onClick event, and search all visible layers(without base maps)
then using dojo deferred, it does identify on each layer and populate result array
if there are no results, it skip and doesn't add empty object to result array
Once all identify request are complete, iterate through all the results and display results...

HTML 5 Video

Many web developers already believe that HTML5′s video support can do away with plugin-supported video delivered by Adobe Flash Player or other runtimes. My three biggest concerns with using HTML5 video for “real world” video deployment revolve around:

Current cross-browser implementations and adoption rates
Cross-platform mobile optimizations
Codec support

Note: There are more than three reasons to proceed with caution using HTML5 video. For example, video playback capabilities such as true full screen support with graphic and text overlays that online audiences have come to expect from online experiences delivered with Flash-based video players aren’t available in customized HTML5 video players. According to Mary Jo Foley of ZDNET,
"Several of my customer and partner contacts have told me they have heard from their own Microsoft sources over the past couple of weeks that Silverlight 5 is the last version of Silverlight that Microsoft will release. They said they are unsure whether there will be any service packs for it, and they are also not clear on how long Silverlight 5 will be supported by Microsoft."
