When you are out to play golf, especially for the first time, it can be quite frightening. You might be thinking of things such as what you need to do and what necessary golf equipment you will need. So are a few essential facts that you need to know about basic golf equipment:

The Necessary Golf Equipment

You need to bring along with you the proper equipment to the golf course, or else what are you going to do without the tools of the trade? According to the rules, the golfers should only have a maximum of fourteen (14) clubs in his or her bag. You don't have to have exactly 14 clubs since there isn't any rule about how little clubs you should bring, but it is not proper etiquette to borrow a partner's club either, and against the rules most of the time.

The next type of necessary golf equipment you need to have would have to be a lot of tees and golf balls. The standard golf ball is white, but it can also come in other colors. It is spherical and has little shallow pockmarks called "dimples." The purpose of these dimples is that they decrease the air turbulence around the ball while it is in motion, so that this will lessen the aerodynamic drag to let the ball fly farther. More often than not, you will be losing a lot of golf balls especially if you are a newbie so be prepared.

You can also bring along a ballmark repair tool in order to repair the ballmarks on the greens. You can buy a pair of golf gloves and also golf shoes if you want, although it isn't always necessary for a beginner. Golf shoes usually have plastic or metal spikes that have been designed in order to increase grip, so that the golfer can have longer and more precise shots.

The Golf Course

Unless you have the luxury having your very own private golf course besides your necessary golf equipment, know that you're not going to b the only one enjoying the place. It is your responsibility to look after yourself and how you treat the golf course.

Golf carts need to be left in the cart paths because the wheel tracks will damage the grass. Also, with your ballmark repair tool, always repair your ball marks on the greens or else the indentations can ruin someone elses great play (or yours).

Hitting the golf ball straight is the key to playing good golf. Recreational golfers try to emulate professional golfers by building a swing that enables straight ball flight. There's a place, though, that you have to look at before you consider the swing if you want to hit a ball that heads for the fairway or flies into the green. That's your grip.

The point many amateurs miss is that the greatest determinant of straight ball flight is not the swing, but a correct grip, something pros have already mastered, giving them freedom to make adjustments to their swing. Not until you have a grip that's right for you will swing changes be beneficial.

The first issue is the orientation of your hands. This isn't about whether your grip is strong, neutral, or weak, though it's related. It's about whether your grip fits in with how your body moves, given the particular way it is put together.

Your body makes a golf swing in a way your body shape, bone structure, and muscular development allow. How you put your hands on the club affects whether movements that are natural for you can occur, or whether you have to make compensations during the swing to correct for the improper orientation of your hands on the club.

A good grip makes your swing flow like water, and the wrong grip makes it feel like you have to get out of your own way. I can't offer clear advice on how to determine this, other than to suggest you try turning your grip around the handle to the right or left by measured degrees until you find the orientation that makes your swing flow the smoothest.

Second, your hands must operate as a unit during the swing. If they become disconnected at some point, the clubface can turn and accuracy becomes subject to chance.

The place I'm talking about is where the right hand fits over the left thumb (left hand over the right thumb, for left-handed golfers). Even though this connection is secure at address, if it comes apart during the swing, the clubface can become disoriented. Even worse, the top hand can overpower the bottom hand on the downswing because it now has space it can rotate into.

Try this. Grip the club with a light connection between the one hand on top and the thumb it covers. You will find that you can rotate that top hand easily, without moving the bottom hand, and when you do, the clubface closes.

To fix this, put a blade of grass between your top hand and the thumb underneath. You should be able to complete your swing without the grass falling out.

Finally, grip pressure. Overall, pressure must be light. Hold the handle just tightly enough so overall it feels that your hands mold in with the grip material, but no tighter. Pressure on the last three fingers of the bottom hand needs to be a little greater than that to ensure clubhead control during the swing.

From time to time, review your grip carefully. Getting it right is more complicated than you might think, and getting it right is the foundation of a good golf swing.

Improving Your Iron Play

We have all been told to hit down on the golf ball, but what does this mean? Simply put, it means making contact with the ball just prior to reaching the lowest point in your swing arc. The lowest portion in your swing arc occurs directly in the center of a shoulder width stance (assuming that you do not sway to either side during your swing). By placing the golf ball in this spot you will make contact with the outside of the ball an instant before the sole of the club-head touches the ground. This is in effect hitting down on the ball. Don't be miss-lead, "hitting down on the ball" does not mean attacking the ball with a steep swing plane and leaving a crater in the ground. This simply means that you are hitting the ball just prior to the lowest point in your swing arc and then leaving a small divot or a slight scar in the ground after ball contact. The advantages of hitting down on the ball are too numerous to mention, but here are a few of the major ones:

Imparts more backspin to the ball which produces ideal trajectory and keeps the shot on line.
Increases distance since the angle of attack ensures that you are using the designed loft angle of the club-face (scooping the ball effectively increases this loft angle).
Allows you to consistently hit the ball from any kind of turf condition or lie.

Hitting down on the golf ball is important for all of the reasons mentioned above. However, the most overlooked and most important reason for learning to hit down on the ball is that it keeps you from doing just the opposite which is to scoop it. A scoop occurs when impact is made with the ball past the lowest point in the swing arc. The club-head is actually moving in an upward arc at this point and lifting the ball into the air. Scooping the ball is a very common habit and is caused unconsciously by the idea that the ball needs to be "lifted" into the air (the fact that the ball is sitting up on the grass and is in essence teed up ½" to 1" off the ground unconsciously reinforces this idea). This not only results in very little back-spin imparted to the golf ball resulting in poor accuracy, but since the club-head impacts the ball past the lowest point of it's arc the loft angle of the club-face is effectively increased causing a dramatic loss of distance.

Another point is that when you scoop the ball your swing force is directed upwards rather than down the target line which greatly reduces the effective power in your shot. You can learn to hit down on the ball by hitting shots at the practice range with the center of the ball lined up with a tee sticking in the ground. After hitting a shot the tick mark in the turf should start directly in line or slightly in front of the tee. This indicates that you are making contact with the side of the ball prior to ticking the turf. I personally learned to hit down on the ball by hitting shots off the base paths of a local baseball diamond. Believe me, if you hit a fat shot off a hard base path your ancestors will feel the shock. Let me give you my own example. When I began playing golf, like most beginning golfers, I attempted to scoop the ball into the air on every iron shot. I did not understand loft angles or swing dynamics and thought that if I hit down on the ball I would only hit line drives at best. For about a year this scooping method worked fine. Then I played a course with bent grass fairways.

If you have never played bent grass it is like the name implies, the grass lays flat on its side, flat on the ground, and so does the ball. Since the normal ½" or so of grass under the ball was not present I hit practically every iron shot fat and those that I didn't hit fat I bladed into the next county. I shot a 125 that day when I was used to shooting in the high 90's and low 100's. Naturally, it didn't take me long to decide to change my method of ball striking. The changes in my game after learning to hit down on the ball? As an example: when I scooped the ball my PW distance was consistently 70 yards, and after becoming proficient at hitting down on the ball my PW distance jumped to a consistent 120 yards. My distance and accuracy increased tremendously with every iron in the bag with the ball virtually exploding off the club-face on every shot. Anyway, I played that same bent grass golf course a few months later and shot an 85.

Tips to hit draw shot

A golf draw shot is an ideal golf swing shot for many golfers as it often helps them get more distance and serves as a nifty weapon to help curve your golf shot around an obstacle to your target. Basically, a draw shot slowly curves from right to left toward your target. The opposite of a draw shot is a "fade" which occurs when your shot curves slowly from left to right.

The differences between a draw shot and a fade were great, draw shots averaged 233 yards in carry and roll, the fades only 216. Therefore it is possible for you to gain at least 17 yards in distance on a fade.

To hit an "intentional" draw shot, here are a few golf tips to set up and execute this shot every time you play.

1. Align your body slightly to the right of your target. A good way to do this is align parallel to your target like you normally do with your golf shots, then rotate your body clockwise about five degrees so that you are aligned just right of the target. This drill will help you to setup and execute your shot perfectly.

2. Assume a stronger golf grip which encourages a little bit more of a "closed" club face. To assume a stronger golf grip, rotate your hands on the grip toward the right. Your club face should now be slightly closed which helps promote more of a "right to left" ball flight. It's means proper golf gripping is required.

3. To properly hit the golf draw shot, it is important to have more of a loose grip which promotes more "release" so loosen your grip slightly for a fluid "release" through the golf shot.

4. The final step is very critical. Though your body line is just right of the target, when you assume your setup position, it is important to aim your clubface directly at the target AND execute your swing along your body line. In other words, swing as you normally do because your body position, grip and clubface position will work together to produce the golf shot. When all these things work perfectly together you are able to hit the shot.

Hopefully these golf tips will help you to enhance your golf skills and motivate you to hit the draw shot in a perfect way. Use above mention tips to add one more golf shot in your weapons.

7 Steps to a Perfect Golf Swing

Some people work on their putting and short game some work on their distance these things are important to a golf game. A perfect golf swing that is smooth and straight is very important as well. If you are having trouble with your golf swing here are seven steps that you can do to help you out with the trouble you have. If you do these steps right your swing will improve as well as your golf game I promise.

1. Grip - The most important step in a golf swing is to grip the club correctly. The first thing that you do is link your pinky finger to the pointer finger of your opposite hand. You do this step either way you swing, lefty or righty. When you have linked your fingers together your thumbs should be going straight down the club towards the ball. If you have done this right you can move on.

2. Stance - When you address you ball you want to first want to position your feet shoulder width apart. This is a crucial part to a great golf swing. After you have positioned yourself up to your ball, bend your knees a little and get loose. You do not want to be off balance or your shot will either shank or slice. When you are comfortable with your stance you are ready to position your club.

3. Alignment - After you have got your stance down and address your ball, place your club head right behind the ball. Position the ball either right behind your front foot or in front of your back foot. Keep your knees bent and bend your arms a little. When you place your club behind your ball your arms should form a V - shape. Once you have completed this step you are now ready to proceed into your backswing.

4. Backswing - Once you have position yourself up to your ball bring your club slowly in an upward fashion. Keeping your head still and eyes on your ball and your arm should bend a bit depending the way you swing. Shift your hips away from the ball while keeping your feet flat to the ground. You do not want to shift to far back or you will become unbalanced.

5. Downswing - When you are at the process of your downswing you want to keep your head still and eyes on the ball. Shift your hips towards the ball and never let your club head get in front of your hands while you are swinging downward. Keep your hands in front of your club while you roll them over in the process.

6. Clubface Contact - When you have come to the end of your downswing and your club is close to making contact to your club make sure the ball hits the middle of the club face. This is where the sweet spot is located and this will give your ball a better pop off your club. If you did this right you shouldn't feel like you hit the ball at all.

7. Follow Through - After making contact with the ball you should finish your swing as balanced as possible. When you finish your swing you should complete your backswing with your club behind your body. Your body will twist when you're doing this. Once your club is behind your head your back foot should rise off the ground and have your heel straight up towards the sky. If you did this right you should be able to place a glass of water on your back heel because you are balanced.

The Golf Swing Can Be Simple If You Work On A Few Basics!

You are 120 yards from the green, standing over your ball getting ready to hit. All of your friends are waiting and watching. Your mind has so many thoughts going on because the last thing you want to do is lay the sod over the ball and advance 30 yards.

I have been there and done that! I hate it.... What is even worse is that the people waiting and watching you expected you to do that.

We all get like this on any given day. You know that golf can be a cruel game and there comes a time when you need some help. It is amazing what can happen with just a simple adjustment. The problem is you don't always have a Pro by your side that can say hey Charlie, your hands are set up wrong on the club. It is great to go to the Pro and get a lesson. In fact everyone should do that once in a while just to get some trained eyes looking at what you are doing. Sometimes that is just not available to you. You need a way to work on the course, at the range and at home to evaluate the golf swing and make adjustments that will show up on the course. Here is what I did.

I started a search around the internet looking for a tool I could rely on. That searching time was valuable. There is a ton of stuff out there but a lot of it is hype. What I needed was some basic instruction of things that were easy to replicate on the course. Setup, Grip, Alignment, Timing & Head Movement. The system that I found gave me a simple approach to understanding the fundamentals of these key components of the game.

I became aware that there really are only a few things you need to do properly and that by working at home and understanding the golf swing, I could help myself on the course. By you understanding the golf swing, you can help yourself to make adjustments. A simple mental checklist allows you to go down through the few basic components of your swing. I took the time to write a small list that sits in my golf bag. When things are not going properly, I get the list out and go through the check list to make sure I am incorporating the proper elements of the golf swing for me. It amazes me how my golf brain decides that we are going to just forget about one of the key elements to hitting great shots for me.

My suggestions;

1. Find a reasonable cost program that you can review at home so that you always have support when you need it.

2. Make a list of the key swing thoughts that are critical to your game on the course. Don't be afraid to pull it put of your bag and go through the checklist when you need some help during a round. No rule against reading.

3. Make sure that every once in a while you take a lesson with a Pro just to get another set of eyes on what you are doing with the golf swing.

4. Practice and repeat practice the few simple swing thoughts that you get from your new at home support program. Time at the driving range is a critical element of every good golfer. Practice the good swing thoughts and your game will improve.

The golf swing can seem very complicated until you realize there are a few basic elements that need to be understood and repeated. The final tool that I bought online offered that kind of support for me. My game has improved to the point that every day is a fun day at the golf course. Yours will be also.
