FOOD CART FRANCHISE: MILK TEA. Fad or Here To Stay?

In 2010, When I asked the same question about Scramble, a franchisor said it is not a Fad!!! And of course, now in 2012 Scramble outlets in major malls like SM North and Mega as well as Robonson;s Galeria are nowhere to be found anymore or at least, not as many. Another like the Scramble is Twistix which I do not see in the malls anymore. (At its peak, Twistix was the most searched food cart concept in my blog.)

During the 2012 MAFBEX, I only saw 1 Scramble advertiser but I did notice the hit food cart concept is now the MILK TEA. MILK TEA everywhere.

While Scramble servings were priced at P7, P10 and P17, Milk Tea are mostly at the P50 to P75 for the Basic Drink reaching to P100+ for Combo Tea/Fruit. I never looked at Filipinos as Tea drinkers and that is why, I ask, is Milk Tea a Fad or Here to Stay??

As cost of a Office Worker Meal goes up at the same time as Office Worker Real Take-Home pay goes down, there will be a market for an affordable meal. THEY HAVE NOT INVENTED THE OFFICE WORKER RUNNING ON BATTERIES YET (notwithstanding the Energizer bunny that keeps on going and going).

Enter the Rice in a Box. The original concept came from those Movies showing the actors going for a Box of Chinese fanfare with matching chopsticks. Now, Rice in a Box may come in those upright triangular-shape Chinese take-out food packs or more commonly, styropack plastic containers (that is being banned by ever more Green is Good Mayors).

One such MAFBEX exhibitor is Jolliant Rapsa Pinoy (821 5840 or 821 9540. Their Franchise package goes for P188,000 with signage and equipment (no mention about the cost of the cart being included). Space required is 4 sqm and franchise is 3 years.

Menu shows Meals at P39 and P49 which is good as all the fastfood giants to which they will have to compete against offer P39 to P50 meals:

1. Jollibee 39ers P39.00/order

2. KFC Flavor shot with drink P50.00

FOOD CART IDEA. Is It Still Worth It to Have a Coffee Kiosk?

I am a coffee lover. I cannot start my day without my MUG of JAVA (kape to Pinoys). I take mine without cream. Ugh.

I have always dreamed of having my own Coffee shop or Cart but with Starbucks lording it over everyone, is it still viable especially with the high cost of high-pedestrian traffic sites & skyhigh renovation costs?

Semi-automatic espresso machines are considered better than Fully-auto espresso machines because one can fine-tune the espresso much better.

There were other booths showing coffee machines like San Remo brand etc.

Some things I learned when I enrolled at the Maya Kitchen Coffee Barista 101 course which fortunately was handled by Eric, a former Starbucks Middle East barista and bartender:

1. Go for the semi-automatic espresso machines

2. Do not get espresso machines that have an integrated Grinder in the unit itself. (It may seem cheaper to have a combined Grinder plus Espresso machine rather than buy them separately but in the Combined setup, the heat from the espresso machine will cause the important Coffee oil inside the coffee beans to dry up thereby weakening the aroma of the espresso.

3. You do not have to buy the best espresso machine BUT YOU HAVE TO BUY THE BEST GRINDER (Marzoli, Eric recommends). A cheap grinder may have knives that heat-up during use and cause th coffee beans to dry.

4. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO COPY STARBUCKS' MENU. If you do, people would rather go to the Original, and not you.

The Packaging material you use for your product HAS A STRONG BEARING ON YOUR PRODUCT because IT IS THE FIRST THING THAT YOUR CUSTOMER WILL SEE ABOUT YOUR PRODUCT.

If it is a new product and you want the consumer to try your product, you might consider offering in SACHET form.

I was told when sachets were first introduced, the idea in other countries was to give these sachet samples for free. But in the Philippines, it is different: the sachet has now become a new variant.

Because of limited spending money, the typical Filipino housewife has to find ways to stretch the budget till the next payday (hence, term "15th" and "30th". This has given rise to the Filipino's "TINGI" mentality, to wit:

   1. Soy sauce (toyo), vinegar (suka), salt and other condiments are decanted (repacked) from their original bottle or bag packing into small plastic bags.

     2. The Pinoy's breakfast upper, Kape or coffee, is in 3-in-1 (coffee+creamer+sugar) sachets

     3. Also shampoo and conditioner for the department store salesladies

If anybody is planning to go into the Food cart business, then it has to be Siomai especially the Steamed version.

At P25.00 per order for 4 pieces, it is just enough for the wallets of most working Filipinos. Some add Rice to make it more filling for just P30.00 for the whole meal.

And when it comes to the Siomai foodcart, many have decided having their own brand of siomai as the veteran Siomai franchises like Siomai House and Master Siomai are just too expensive for them (P280,000 and up just for the franchise package). Most siomai makers will even provide a steamer free of charge so long as you order your siomai with them. One such outfit is JCM Foodlink. I know they are famous as I get a lot of inquiries in my blog asking for their contact numbers (which I will provide later in this post).

During the MAFBEX 2012, JCM Foodlink offered several ways of going into business with them:

1. Be a Master Franchisee for P88,888 wherein you get an Area Distribution Exclusivity (meaning you get to supply JCM products within an area)

2. Setup a Food cart business for just P38,888.

3. Sell JCM products such as siomai and siopao. If pickup, the price of siomai is P2.17/pc or P8.68 for an order of 4. Selling price is P25.00 for 4-pcs.

For delivery, the price goes up slightly to P2.25 for a minimum order of P3,000.

The 7th Manila Food and Beverage Expo or MAFBEX at the WTC

Last Thursday June 14, 2012, I attended the 7th Manila Foods and Beverage Expo or MAFBEX which was held at the World Trade Center ( WTC) at the corner of Buendia Avenue and Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City.

I bumped into my High School classmate Gerry R. who is in the Catering Business. Unfortunately, he commented about being disappointed as he went there to see exhibits of food ingredients and packaging materials but instead, he noticed the preponderance of so many Food carts. He said maybe the organizers need the Food franchisors to fill up the place.

I had to agree with him as I did see so many food franchises (there were quite a number on Milk Tea alone) that is was beginning to look like the Philippine Franchise Assn or PFA exhibit or the AFFI!!!!

I was hoping to see more booths like San Miguel Foods used to have wherein they would conduct Food demos with commercial sales possibilities and after the usual Taste Tests, the San Miguel Foods chefs would distribute sheets of paper showing the costings and possible selling prices and profit margins for us small entrepreneurs. That is what I was hoping the MAFBEX would be.

In fact, I saw an assortment that did not even seem to jive with Foods and Beverage. There was one booth selling Tiannge-style knick knacks or ladies fashion accessories. Huh? Another was a massage chair or equipment booth. Double Huh Huh?? Odd wouldn't you say in a Foods and Beverage Expo.

A Bit odd but at least it was a food ingredient is this booth that was looking for dealers of Turkish Flour. Mr. Rommel Serrano, Sales Representative for JSJJ Trading (0932 2096069 or jsjj_trading@yahoo.com) was certainly helpful and knowledgeable about his product.

I am also in the Rice Retail business along with my partner and dear Family friend and Mr. Serrano explained to me the profit spread that I could earn per bag of flour. He also explained the difference between Hard, Soft and special flour as well as their shelf life.

There was also this Place Setting that looked kind of dainty so I took a picture of it. Too bad it was displayed towards the rear of the hallway right beside a stage where some cooking demo was being held. It would have been good front and center.

I look forward that in the next MAFBEX, the organizers could create an identity akin to the Asia Food Expo that had a lot of food machinery, food ingredients, packaging material as well as booths that had Food Demos giving out Recipes using their products as well as costings. That would be very helpful to entrepreneurs.

Leave the foodcart franchises to PFA and AFFI instead of having a mishmash or Chopsuey (hey thats a food!!) of concepts.

Another thing about Christmas is that every thing seems different. We cannot help feeling a little joy just taking a ride on our ordinary bus, walking here and there to and fro and all the components of modern daily life. We see a little bit more smiles and hear more greets (of course) and how can we not notice the gifts being wrapped and delivered.

For a few days, we put our problems aside and just try to be a little more cheerful.

Though not yet the new year, it is also the time that we say I will clean up my Act (and my room) and start anew. And that is what a birthday really is, ANOTHER CHANCE OF A BIRTH YEAR TO PROVE THAT TO THE LORD THAT IT WAS WORTH IT LENDING THIS BODY TO US.

Christmas is always about Children and what better way for us Grown-ups to share our Blessings and Joy with kids of our less-fortunate families. For this year 2011, the Rotary International District 3780 (to which my Rotary Club of Masambong is affiliated with) together with the support of the Philippine National Police held it at the relatively huge PNP Multi-purpose Center inside the Camp Crame, headquarters of the Philippines' Police Force.

These are Teachers Jo & Marilyn & Grade 3 studes of the Masambong Elementary School that the Rotary Club of Masambong sponsored

Not only resources in assets were provided but members of the Police Force were present together with fellow Rotarians in making sure the event will be a Success and in fact, it was as there were about 500 kids laughing and screaming to their heart's content.

The event started quite early (around 7:30am) when our Current Club President Erwin Cuzon along with Club Secretary Jonalyn Alibangbang picked-up our Special Little Guests from the Church in Del Monte, Quezon City (North of Manila).

Traffic was bad as December 9, 2011 happened to be also the day the Philippine's Past President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, on order of the Courts, was escorted from the newly-built St Luke's Hospital in classy The Fort, Taguig City to be placed under hospital-arrest (a term new to the whole wide world, I think) at the government-owned Veterans Memorial Hospital in Quezon City (Trivia: While the government hospital may not be as spanking new as St Luke's, it does have its own Golf Course which may be the Ultimate Amenity for the Rich and Famous. Can any world-class hospital top that???) .

It was also the day when the weather did not cooperate and school classes were suspended due to the rains thereby making worse an already-horrendous traffic situation along the stretch of EDSA, Manila's Main Thoroughfare.

Finally, our Group reached the venue and there were already a lot of kids chatting away and eating and eating lots of ice cream. (There were a number of ice cream carts strategically scattered along the long hall way. Credit to the logistic prowess of the PNP.)

These 2 Educators represent the UNSUNG HEROES OF OUR PHILIPPINE SOCIETY. In their hands they hold the KEY TO THE FUTURE LEADERS OF OUR COUNTRY AND OF OUR BUSINESSES. AND YET, not enough Tools and Care are given to them in molding our precious future leaders.

I expressed my opinion to my fellow Rotarians at the Rotary Club of Masambong that if there ever is a noble project that I would want to be a part of, it will be a PROJECT THAT WILL DIRECTLY BENEFIT OUR YOUTH. I feel that not enough is done to help our EDUCATORS to do a much much better job in preparing our Youth not only to be Responsible Citizens but to make full use of the Body that our Creator has ONLY lent us.

Rotary International District 3780 Mardi Gras Christmas Party for 2011

Theme of this Year 2011 Christmas Party hosted by Rotary International District 3780 is Mardi Gras in December. This is my first time to attend a Christmas Party hosted by the Rotary Club District 3780 (of which my Club, the Rotary Club of Masambong, is affiliated with) and for this year 2011, it was held at the PNP Multi-Purpose Center inside Camp Crame in the heart of Manila (for those in the dark, that's where the Philippine National Police or PNP is based).

How did it come about that a Christmas Party is inside a Police headquarters? No, it is not meant to keep us in our best behavior but rather, the newly-appointed PNP Director General, Gen. Nicanor Bartolome, happens to head also the Rotary Club of Camp Crame.

But being in a humongous Police Headquarters did not detract from the fun and revilement as the Rotary District 3780 Christmas Party not only had its fair share of blaring noise, shouts and laughter as well as blazing and flashing lights, it was also attended by, in my estimate, at least a thousand Rotarians and Spouses and other well-wishers.

There was a lot of pomp as befitting a Mardi Gras Festival, to wit:

There was a lot of good food (a sumptuous Buffet complemented by a separate table for fresh Sushi (with a fresh Tuna on display as Body of Evidence) and another for the roasted Calf (it was on display before being parceled out to hungry Rotarians).

Since empty tables were going out fast, I was tasked by the Madame Past President Polly Marcelo to guard our table at all costs. At the 2011 Philippine Franchise Asia or PFA exhibit at the SMX Convention Center, I saw the Waffle Time booth in the front part of the huge hallway. We see the Waffle Time foodcart all over Metro Manila.

A New Kind of Laundry Shop: Speed Queen Laundry

Speed Queen Coin-operated Laundry machine

I you have seen American movies wherein the actors (usually male; don't know why) lugging a basket of dirty clothes to a Laundrymat. They then open the fish-bowl glass of the front-loading laundry machine, dump all their dirties in them and search their pockets for loose change (coins) which they then feed into the machine for it to run.

Well, there is an outfit who is planning to do just that--- Speed Queen by Tysons Global Enchange Inc (tel 0922-0752; no landline huh?).

Instead of using coins, you have to use their tokens to make the machine run. You charge P30-60/cycle (per single machine operation; hopefully it gets clean in one washing) and P60/cycle for drying. Each cycle is good for 3 kgs or about 4-5 maong denim pants. This compares to the P25-30/kg that laundryshops currently charge.

While they are more expensive, the Speed Queen guy says theirs is good for people in a rush as laundryshops may take 2-3 days to deliver. But, on the other hand, I told the Speed Queen guy, the laundryshops usually include ironing services. In the case of Speed Queen, you still need to iron it yourself when you get back to the condo --- which most people do not like to do (hot, tiring, hassle).

Also, while their flyer says Passive Income, the Speed Queen guy agrees that we still need to hire people to watch the place to prevent us Filipinos from vandalizing the machines or horror, trying to outwit the machine by putting all sorts of coin-like metal object to fool the coin-slot. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Just looking at the daily lines at any Mercury Drugstore and you will realize many Filipinos are getting sick and in need of maintenance medicines. Add to this is the fact that the Philippines has one of the highest birth rates of any country on Earth and you say, Aha BIG MARKET FOR DRUGS (the ethical kind, of course).

A big point favoring the Generic drug market is that many Filipinos cannot afford branded medicines and most have no health care plan.

But you also will say "All the good locations have already been taken!!!" That may be also true but maybe having the second best location might be just as good. The problem is where are these golden locations located?

A Great Idea at a Low CashOut- - It's the eLoad Vendo Machine from Uload

No doubt the eLoad business is such a big thing. A Consumer Distributor (when there was still one) told me a couple of years ago that Smart's daily cash collection was P300 Million (imagine a day!!!) and that was a several years ago.

1. Cost of hiring someone to dispense the eLoads (salary etc)

2. The owner had to buy the load so that the saleslady's cellphone will get the retail load for resell.

3. If the saleslady types the wrong cellphone number, then she has to pay for the loss.

During the AFFI Filipino Franchise Show at the World Trade Center, I saw this ELoad Vendo machine supplied by Uload to wit:

1. Investment is low at P30,000 which already includes P10,000 worth of eload.

2. One can have several of these Uload machines and position them almost anywhere (counter top, near Pay phones airports, bus terminals or almost anywhere.

3. You need only a very tiny space as the machine is as big as the old old Red PLDT coin-operated pay phones

4. Drawback is that you have to buy the eload from them. Your margin is only 7% versus about 13% or more if you get them directly from Smart or globe.

5. Though the margin is about 50% lower, you have to compute that you do not have to pay anybody and you save on rent as the space needed is minimal.

Vintel Logistics or VCargo booth at the AFFI Filipino Franchise

I have been attending almost all the past Franchise Shows and I always see the bright orange and white color scheme that is Vintel Logistics Inc. or for short, VCargo. Mr. Tibig's story is a story worth emulating as he started small and now has expanded a lot from a small outfit along Canley Road in Pasig to a rented Warehouse at Armal compound (owned by the former Mayor of Pasig) in Raymundo Ave. also in Pasig City.

They not only are into International forwarding and small cargo handling but they have recently set-up their own franchise product, the VCargo Retail Store, to wit:

1. Its concept is like the Mail and More (Air21/Fedex) or UPS Store

2. It will offer Worldwide remittance (thru Western Union), ticketing (Cebu Pacific, Zest Air) and eLoad .

3. Concepts are mall-based or kiosk (non-mall) with investment outlay I was told for the kiosk at about P600,000.

Being a Logistics man all my life, I wanted to have a small business along the lines of Supply chain or distribution. I got to know about the VCargo Retail store last year thru Mr. Rock Bullet Pineda of Vintel. Mr Pineda or Bullet is a great guy to talk to. He seems to know a lot about Logistics and he is excited about his company. He told me then that Vintel will still test-market their VCargo store and for me to wait for developments.

And so it was with a certain excitement when I saw in this year's 2011 AFFI Filipino Franchise show that they have finally launched the VCargo Retail store and there lies my big disappointment.

I met a the person manning VCargo Retail Store booth and we must have talked for about 30minutes or so about:

1. I would like him to email me details about the VCargo Retail store Kiosk-type as I do not have much capital for a mall-based operation

2. I requested for a quote for an Air freight cargo for VisMIn (Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Surigao) for a client who is into the food supplement business. I even provided him with the weight, CBM and Length x width x height of the cargo. (I do freelance sales work for logistics companies.)

3. I also discussed with him about another client, a styro packaging manufacturer, that won the contract to supply the top 3 or 5 fast-food chain stores in country and that I need a quote for 20-footer containerized shipment to VisMin and we are talking about several TEUs a month if VCargo can guarantee excellent lead times and good service.

Why am I disappointed ? The AFFI was in July 21, 2011 and todate I have not received any quote much less heard from him. I texted him but no reply. I called VCargo and I told Ms.Maggie Gagalac of my predicament and that if in case VCargo cannot handle my requirement, for VCargo to please let me know by phone or text so that at least I can look for another logistics provider. Unfortunately, my call to the Ms. Gagalac also proved futile.

In the logistics industry, success is simply being a able to meet a client's standards and a willingness to walk the extra mile. Hay, this was not the case. Am sure my case is one of a kind and is in no way reflective of the company as a whole. Still, I was hoping for a chance to do business with VCargo but maybe somethings were just not meant to be. . . .

I got an email a few days ago from Ms Erica Mae Concepcion of VCargo inviting me to a forum about their new franchise concept. As for my cargo prospects that am offering Vintel, maybe they too will get in touch with me. One Lesson I learned is that Opportunities do not wait for me.

Sad but I missed the Forum for prospective franchisees of VCargo held last Aug 16 Tuesday as that happened to be the day when I have to report to PCSO for my weekly Remittance for my Lotto outlet. I intend to go there on a separate occasion instead.

FAKE COUNTERFEIT NEW PESO BILLS

Not everybody has seen the new Peso Bills and yet the Quezon City branch of a Bank where I went to told me that last week a depositor unwittingly deposited a P200 bill with the new design that turned out to be FAKE.

Apparently, the image appearing on the white portion of the P200 bill appeared to be poorly made but overall, the fake P200 appeared to be expertly made.

BEWARE!!!

Continuing my FOCUS on small business or Franchise that are GOOD FOR THE LONG TERM, then Water Refilling Station is one of them.

Fact is despite the good management of Manila Water and Maynilad, alas that will not guarantee SAFE WATER. The main reason is both have to use the existing water pipeline system of the MWSS or NAWASA for those fortunate to be as old as me.

Take for example the water that flows out of my faucet in Muntinlupa. Its rusty and I know that for a fact because I have an inline-water filter attached between the water meter and the pipe leading to my house. After changing the filter cartridge (by the way, I use a 1 micron filter), you can see that the filter will have a rust color after just a few hours!!!

After a month, the water filter cartridge will have a dark rust color throughout the filter. I only use my filtered water to wash clothes, water the plants and wash dishes. For cooking and drinking, I buy water from a reputable water refilling station. meaning one that has a certificate showing that their water has been tested and passed the quality standards.
