Apparently Ivy Leaguers make the most as they go into careers that manage people or give advice! Finance careers also pay very well. Very interesting article by Sarah E. Needleman in the Wall Street Journal reveals the reality of compensation for college graduates. Here are the highlights from the article or you can read it entirely at http://finance.yahoo.com/college-education/article/105499/Ivy-Leaguers’-Big-Edge-Starting-Pay

The median starting salary for Ivy Leaguers is 32% higher than that of liberal-arts college graduates — and at 10 or more years into graduates’ working lives, the spread is 34%, according to the survey.

One reason why Ivy Leaguers outpace their peers may be that they tend to choose roles where they’re either managing or providing advice, says David Wise, a senior consultant at Hay Group Inc., a global management-consulting firm based in Philadelphia. By contrast, state-school graduates gravitate toward individual contributor and support roles. “Ivy Leaguers probably position themselves better for job opportunities that provide them with significant upside,” says Mr. Wise, adding that this is the first survey he’s seen that correlates school choice to a point later in a career.

Also, more Ivy League graduates go into finance roles than graduates of other schools, and employers pay a premium for them, says Peter Cappelli, a professor of management and director of the Center for Human Resources at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. “Dartmouth kids get paid more for the same job than kids from Rutgers are [doing],” he says.

Which school pays off the most? According to the survey, graduates of Dartmouth College, an Ivy League college, earn the highest median salary — $134,000.

At the bottom: Engineering-school grads, who earn the highest starting salaries, yet see their paychecks expand just 76% by their career midpoints to $103,842 from $59,058.

Contrary to what many parents tell their children majoring in subjects like political science or philosophy, these degrees won’t necessarily leave you in the poorhouse. It can depend on what career path you choose to pursue with that degree. History-majors-turned-business-consultants earn a median total compensation of $104,000, similar to their counterparts who pursued a business major like economics — whose grads earn about $98,000 overall at midcareer, the PayScale study shows.

“With a liberal art’s degree, it’s what you make of it,” says Al Lee, director of qualitative analysis at PayScale. “If you’re motivated by income, then there are certainly careers in psychology that pay as well as careers out of engineering.”

1. Investment Banking Analyst. If you are good with numbers and solving real-world problems, this job pays handsomely in the early years and has strong long-term earning potential.
Typical Starting Salary: $59,084

2. Business Analyst, Computer Software. Data mining is a new and hot field with strong career potential. Normally used by financial institutions such as banks, data miners sort through vast amounts of information that help companies make the best use of the information in their data warehouses. Master’s degrees in computer science, physics, or statistics are usually required.
Typical Starting Salary: $50,727

3. Forensic Computer Analyst. Computer forensics is the analysis of information contained within and created with computer systems and computing devices. These analysts investigate causes of computer meltdowns, who has misused a computer system, or how someone committed a crime. These professionals are quite popular in white-collar criminal investigations.
Typical Starting Salary: $51,852

4. Junior Associate Attorney. The financial scales of justice certainly tip toward the side of the average attorney. And just after five years experience the average salary jumps to $89,210. Depending on the field of specialty, the long-term earning potential is almost limitless. Big-shot lawyers like former Sen. John Edwards (malpractice) and celebrity criminal defense attorney Mark Gerago have cleaned up millions in their careers.
Typical Starting Salary: $52,678

5. Physical Therapist. If anatomy is your thing, physical therapy may be your path to greener pastures. PTs can even specialize in areas such as hand or back therapy to boost their marketability — and salary potential.
Typical Starting Salary: $52,573

6. Nurse Practitioner (ARNP). Nursing opportunities never seem to go out of style, and neither does demand in this area. If a doctor cannot squeeze you in for an appointment, chances are there is a nurse practitioner standing by in his place. While nurse practitioners don’t command the big bucks that physicians do, their services certainly don’t come cheap.
Typical Starting Salary: $67,166

7. Electrical Engineer. It is easy to do the math on how marketable engineers are. Companies dig deep to lure young electrical engineers and other subspecialties across the board. Electrical engineers focus on using electricity to transmit energy. Payscale.com shows that experienced electrical engineers earn an average of $81,078.
Typical Starting Salary: $54,401

8. Software Engineer. Software engineers design, write, and test computer programs. Computer networking and information technology are hot fields that are here to stay.
Typical Starting Salary: $56,795

9. Pharmaceutical Sales Representative. You don’t have to be a physician or even science major to make big bucks in medicine. Just about anyone with a college degree and a killer personality can be trained in pharmaceutical sales. These professionals make sales calls to doctors’ offices hoping to convince the doctors to prescribe the latest drugs made by the pharmaceutical company they represent. Seasoned pros can make six-figure salaries in this field.
Typical Starting Salary: $51,104

10. Veterinarian. Do you love animals? Veterinarians can combine a passion for their warm, furry friends with great earning power. With growing animal research and interest in pet care, veterinarian medicine is bound to be a popular profession for years to come.
Typical Starting Salary: $59,084

I love these “sexy jobs” listing posted by CareerBuilder - some are highly debatable, others are clearly a winner! What do you think?

1. Entertainer/Model: While the voters may have been thinking of famous types like George Clooney and Charlize Theron, I also think the indie musicians featured in DivineCaroline??s Mothers of Invention?? column are sexy, like folk-rock singer and fiddle player Rani Arbo.

2. Cocktail Waitress: I take exception with this one. As somebody who??s done it, I don??t find schlepping liquor and beer particularly sexy. My amateur analysis: annoying men voted for this because waitresses are the only women in bars who are nice to them. (Guys: Some inside scoop. The waitresses don??t really think you are charming when heavily intoxicated. They work for tips.)

3. Athlete: Well, yeah, a championship athlete??with the body and spirit to match??is pretty sexy. (There are of course exceptions. Does Michael Vick, dog-fighting entrepreneur, turn anyone out there on?) Here at DC, we??ve got stories by and about sexy pro athletes like volleyball player Saralyn Smith and cyclist Katie Lambden.

4. Firefighter: Who could argue this one? These are men and women willing to put their lives in danger to protect us. Pretty sexy!

5. Cowboy: Hmm, yeah, I get this fantasy. It??s that image of a brooding loner riding off into the sunset. My only issue: can??t women be cowpeople too? Let??s amend number five to be ??cowboys and cowgirls.??

6. Nurse: As I said before, I totally get what??s sexy about a nurse. I think I fell in love with all my nurses, male and female, after my children were born. They really seemed to care how I was feeling??and they gave me pain medication!

7. Artist: Totally! Artists are interesting and creative and that??s sexy??no doubt about it. Check out Kimetha Vanderveen??s montoypes and Jo Myers-Walker??s paintings.

8. Military Professional: Yeah, this is another one that??s hard to argue. No matter what you think about the war, you gotta respect the men and women who are risking their lives for our country.

9. Construction Worker: Indeed, there??s something manly about a burly guy with a hammer. In the article, Want To Succeed In Your Career? Construction Workers Tell You How, Patti Ghezzi interviewed some workers to get job advice. Turns out, construction workers are sexy and savvy??who knew?

10. TV Anchor/Personality: Not sure I agree that most of the blow-dried talking heads on TV are sexy. However, I do like Daryn Kagan, a former CNN anchor. After she lost her on-air gig, she started a company spreading good news via the Internet. Sexy stuff!
