I haven't posted since February! I will definitely get back to posting about coffee starting next week. This post is about the trajedy that took place Monday April 16th at Virginia Tech. As a Hokie myself (BSE '99) I feel the pain of the Hokie nation. Blacksburg, VA is such a peaceful and beautiful place and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is an amazing school. I don't know any of the victims or those affected but Hokie nation really is one giant family. You really have to be a Hokie to understand that. I really can only say two things to my fellow Hokies; VA TECH WILL RISE ABOVE THIS AND BECOME STRONGER AS A RESULT OF THIS TRAGEDY AND....

GO HOKIES!!!

As Promised -

I have to say Batch 1 (Eddie Dove's profile - http://southcoastcoffeeroaster.blogspot.com/) is out in front with a slim lead.

I recently ran a temperature profile experiment with two batches of the same bean on my GC to see if I could notice a difference. I really wasn't one to put much stock into the notion that a temperature profile and ramp can affect how a bean brews up. I mean no one I know has a temperature profile to cook steak or chicken...

My preliminary results are beginning to convince me that I couldn't have been more WRONG! See the notes on Batch 1 vs. Batch 2.
http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dfwpqs4b_6422ccxt

I have also attached a review of a Guatemala San Marcos - Finca Maria Elisa that I severely under roasted. The coffee had a lot of sour notes in it. I hate when I screw up a great bean. It's like I've betrayed to coffee gods or something...(okay, not that bad but Sweet Maria's beans deserve better than to be ruined by my developing roasting skills)!

http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dfwpqs4b_62fcm42w

Sumatra Classic Mandheling

I tweaked my profile to 300 for 5 min, 435 from 5 to 10.5 minutes, 458 until the end of the roast. I didn't have too much luck with this profile. Since I roast under an open window and it's in the 30's on a daily basis in where I am in upstate NY, the third stage in my GC needs to be 460 or higher (no greater than 470). The bean tastes a little baked for my tastes. I'll have to reorder this and try again...

http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dfwpqs4b_58c2h99d

Dec 28th - roast log update

This is a very good rustic coffee with a strong sarsaparilla flavor in the cup. My tasters at work were not crazy about this coffee. The felt it was overpowering but I really liked it. I though it was unique tasting and full bodied. I think I nailed the roast and I really did enjoy this bean.

http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dfwpqs4b_46gf8t3w

New reviews coming

The purpose of the blog is to publish my home coffee roasting logs for the members of the Sweet Maria's list serve. All coffee roasted was purchased from Sweet Maria's (www.sweetmarias.com). Their products, service, and dedication to finding the best greens are second to none. I can't praise their efforts enough!

The original Sweet Maria's cupping reviews by Thompson Owen (proprietor of Sweet Maria's) can be found on Sweet Maria's current offerings site:
http://www.sweetmarias.com/prod.greencoffee.mvc.shtml

or the archive of their green offerings:
http://www.sweetmarias.com/coffee.reviewarchive.a-f.html

Navigating their archvies should be self-explainatory. I have included a link to SM's orginal cupping reviews with my logs. If the link is broken, please check their archived reviews for their original cupping review. They were the target I was trying to hit.

Ethiopian Organic Idido
