About the SocietyThe Newfoundland Pony Society was founded in 1979 and was incorporated in 1981 as a Registered Charity (#899 123 053 RRO 001). The Society convinced the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador that the Newfoundland Pony was a living part of the province’s cultural history and as such, required legal protection before there were too few ponies to maintain a healthy population.

At the time of the search there were estimated to be fewer than two hundred Newfoundland ponies left on the Island; so the search was long and it was quickly learned that the selection was limited. The initial thoughts were to seek a larger breeding pair (greater than 14hh), but that goal was found to be unattainable and we settled for what we could find; although all in all we did very well.
