The study, which tracked consumer confidence, major concerns and spending intentions among 27,000 Net users in 48 countries, found Indians the most positive worldwide on all considerations—whether it's their job prospects, personal finances or attitude towards spending. Over nine out of 10 Indians were optimistic about their job prospects over the next 12 months and were also the most confident in terms of their personal finances during the said period, the survey disclosed.

“The positive attitude of Indians comes on the back of a robust GDP growth (9%) in the first quarter of the current financial year. Even during the fiscal 2009-10, India's economy grew by 7.4% due to higher-than-anticipated growth in agriculture, mining and manufacturing sectors,” Piyush Mathur, president-India, The Nielsen Company said. India has reported a two-point increase, at 129 points in the Nielsen Global Consumer Confidence Index.
The drawback in current system driven work culture is the incapability of employees to see beyond the defined structure to contribute. People who have inability to take initiative will narrow down opportunities in future,” opines to Dr. N Chandrasekaran, Vice President – Corporate Affairs, TAKE Solutions.

It’s a widely held misconception that only leaders are required to take initiative. In the current set-up, every individual is expected to take initiative as often as the situation demands.

“Taking an initiative means taking the first step and doing what needs to be done without waiting to be told what to do. Hence it is equally applicable to everyone in the organization whether s/he is a leader or a ground level worker. However initiatives should not be taken just for the sake of it. One should take an initiative only when one feels that s/he knows the answer to a certain problem, it is within the realm of his/her authority and it supports the organizational or the team’s goals and objectives,” explains Partha Patnaik.

Experiments cast doubt on the classic marker of a genuine smile.

For years psychologists have thought that a real smile, which reflects felt, positive emotion, is signalled by upturned lips and crinkly eyes.

This genuine smile is named after the French physician Duchenne, who passed electrical currents through live subjects and took photos of their weirdly contorted faces.

Oddly enough when some people try to fake a smile they look like one of Duchenne's subjects: in pain. It has been suggested that 80% of us are unable to conjure up a fake smile that will trick others because we don't have voluntary control over the muscles around our eyes which signal the Duchenne smile.
Others, though, may well be much better at faking a real smile, which is a handy trick because people automatically trust, like and want to be with those who appear to be showing real emotion.

Writing in a recent issue of the journal Emotion, however, Krumhuber and Manstead (2009) question whether this 80% estimate is anywhere near the mark. In the first of a series of experiments they found that 83% of the people in their study could produce fake smiles that others mistook for the real thing in photographs.

The researchers also explored how people perceived genuine and fake smiles when they saw videos rather than just static pictures. Then it emerged that fake smiles were easier to spot, but the supposedly crucial crinkling around the eyes didn't help much.

Instead, telling a real from fake smile relied more on dynamic processes such as how long people hold it, the symmetry of the expression and whether conflicting emotions are communicated by other facial areas.

So the Duchenne smile has taken a bit of bashing in this research, which suggests that most people can fake crinkly eyes. Not only that but the crinkly eyes aren't as crucial for us in judging the sincerity of a smile as other factors. Rather than just the crinkly eyes, it's the whole movement of the face which tells a tale either of deception or of genuine, felt emotion.
See the video first, my comments are below.

Here's what I like about this:

1. Creativity - using a new approach, medium, technology, trend.

2. Knowledge - the idea would not have been possible without the knowledge of atleast 3 things - how does google adwords work, people like to google themselves and what would make them hire him.

3. Self/ Follow up - it would have been easy to get noticed, but to win interviews based on your profile, that is awesome. to crack those interviews, brilliant!

I have written extensively how you have to forget recruiters. 50% of all job hires are now through networking. Recruitment is also getting to be a dirty business.
see all the secrets uncovered so far:

No logo on each slide

Restrict charts

Tell a story

Now for some of my additions:

Use the magical 3 step telling process

Tell the participants/ attendees that how and where they can access the presentation. This makes sure they listen to you and not spend time trying to take all the necessary figures from the presentation.

Do not read from the screen. Talk. Tell them the story you came to tell. The screen is supposed to support your story not drive it.

Introduce the next slide before you bring it up on the screen. Say something like 'and in the next slide we will see why this is imperative' then click the next button.

Use a remote clicker if possible. getting glued to the laptop may not really be the best. You getting rooted in one place makes the presentation drab. move around, following you around activates the brain.

Do not cross the projector (the space between the projector and the screen)

If possible try and manage your own presentation. getting someone else to click slides forward can be very trying. there are bound to be mistakes and that just breaks the flow of the presentation.

Look people in the eye. make eye contact.

Look at everybody. some presenters find a freindly face in the audience and stick to it. dont. make eyecontact with everyone.

Nod.

Dont take questions until unless you have programmed time for it. If anyone asks a question, tell them you will take all questions at the end of the presentation. Park all such questions to a question board/ white board etc.

Dress appropriately

Speak in a controlled volume and pitch.

Practice.

Then practice some more. click here to know more

As always, I am here for you.
If you have a presentation you would want me to look over to help you decide if it is effective or can be improved, let me know.
Cheers!
What do you call someone that speaks several languages?

Two or more languages: multilingual
Two languages: bilingual
Three languages: trilingual
Many languages: polyglot

source | wikianswers

So what are you?
In all honesty, bilingual and if you are an Indian then probably, trilingual (almost everyone can manage their mother tongue, Hindi & English)

you probably learnt some french/spanish/german in school too, but can you truly converse in those languages?

Before we get to our language abilities, let me try and detail why being a polyglot is such an awesome thing for you and your career.

There are more than 100000 reasons.

The number of foreigners working in India in the software and outsourcing industries is mounting at a rapid pace, surpassing 50,000 at the last count by registrar’s office in New Delhi. - source

This is probably an old estimate and one that only takes into account IT. Add hospitality into the mix general managers, executive chefs in some of the best hotels in India are expats.

here's another study

The country's outsourcers will need some 160,000 workers with top-notch foreign-language skills by 2010, estimates Evalueserve

In another story, business standard says Foreign bosses may help India Inc to negotiate global drive, and cites various leading Indian business leaders suggesting more foreigners leading Indian companies.

With more and more travel, international trade, not only are your customers coming from across the world, but so are your suppliers, your colleagues and your bosses.

Its time. Its time to speak their language.

A company, any company is made of people. Everything else is easier to manage. your relationships with those people will create in most cases either a success or a failure.

According to a lot of research, people leave bosses not companies. If your boss from a similar culture, similar language is difficult, imagine working for one who doesn't even understand a word you say, let alone the thought and effort you put behind creating it.

Speaking the other person's language creates a bond instantaneously. It breaks the proverbial ice and helps you leap frog into the inner sanctum.

Here is where the meat of this post/article is.

Communicating in the language as a natural is what being a polyglot is all about. Not just saying Très bien and bon jour, but to be able to pick the nuances in thought from the nuances in the language.

Lets tackle the how:

1. Learn from professionals
every city has language schools that tutor people in the language. These are good, but to me a little boring.

2. Learn from websites.
Free stuff on the net! brilliant and you can click here to see such websites.
The only catch, you really need to be motivated to do this.

3. CDs/Audio tapes/Podcasts
me likes these, only coz you can take them with you. listen to them while you travel, walk, run, or while you are stuck in the traffic jam.

4. Polyglot meetings & events
These are big outside India (see here), but seem to be getting to our shores too. I saw a post but not too many responses.

Essentially people get together to talk. you drink, mix around, talk in the language you want to learn and master. This sounds like so much fun. If anyone here wants to start something like this, dont forget to call me (prabhjot bedi, +91 98720 00604, mail@prabhjotbedi.com)

5. Traveling
If you can, then nothing tops this.
Go to the country where the language you want to learn is considered mother tongue. immerse yourself in the culture, the language and you will come out so much richer.

There, the what, the why and the how of a polyglot and the success it could bring you.

p.s. One of my favorite hoteliers and bosses is Raymond Bickson - Managing Director - Indian Hotels Co Ltd - the owners of Taj Group of Hotels (click here to read his interview)

Repeatedly you read things like 'God would be comfortable staying with him', guess what, he is a polyglot!

A lot of recruiters claim to have worked with the best in the industry, but did they ever get paid? Did they try and fail? trying cannot be considered a client-service provider relationship. A lot of firms file tenders and bids, only the successful one is considered the contractor.

So, what does this mean for you as a candidate.
Its true.

If you just read the statement once you would feel I was nuts.

The recruiter gets paid (and in some cases, exceptionally well paid) because of you. You are good, you get selected and hence his business thrives.

Why wouldn’t you be important to him? ridiculous.

But its still true.

Many people talk about how they “spend” their time – working, sleeping, watching TV etc. Their perception is therefore that it is a commodity used in a transaction. Psychologically, they do not perceive it as the asset and investment it is. Effectively, they are not expecting a return. You end up spending your time like you spend your money.

Is this you?

Do you ever say to yourself, “I wish I had more time?”

Or

Do you ever say to your “boss, “I need more time?”

Or

Do you ever say to your family, “I wish I could spend more time with you?” And then tell them about all your commitments.

If you are like me, then you answered, “Yes” to all those. If so, your perspective of time is likely skewed in the wrong direction.

Here’s why. You cannot control or manage time!

There is a plethora of time management courses out there. Most of them are helpful. I would suggest they change their name to self-management courses. You cannot manage time (in case you missed it the first time!).

Let me illustrate. If I were to give you my watch and said, “Please manage my time”, could you do it? No. Time passes whether we like it or not. It is what we do with it and how that is important. This derives from our self-management and the decisions we make and the actions we take with respect to our time.

So how do you manage yourself and therefore get a return on the time you are investing (not spending)?

Time Soars

This is where the 7 minutes comes in. In truth it is actually not just 7 minutes. It is the first 7 minutes in every engagement that will predominantly determine your outcome.

Regardless if it is a task, a meeting or when you first return home to your family, the first 7 minutes are crucial.

Tasks

Before you begin your day, before you begin a task, give the first 7 minutes as if they are the most important. Use them to prioritize and identify the outcomes you desire for tasks and for the day. This aligns very nicely to ending your day with 7 minutes to plan what you will do the next day giving your mind space to clear out some noise and process subconsciously so it is prepared for the work ahead the next day. You will be surprised at the clarity this provides.

Same thing at the beginning of the day – commit those first 7 minutes to refining your plan for the day and the outcomes you desire. Do this and things wonderfully begin to flow better and you approach things in a more centred way.

Self

As with Tasks, invest the first 7 minutes of your day or work day, depending on what works best, find a quiet place or create a quiet space and just invest that time meditating on your life, your goals, your dreams, your vision.

To give yourself that extra boost, do it at the end of your day too – just 7 minutes.

Team

At team or 1-2-1 meetings give them your best, at least, for the first 7 minutes. That is, be focused and interested in them first. Listen. Ask questions relative to what they are saying. As a cardinal rule for networking states, ‘Be interested before being interesting’. People will value you for it. You will be adding significant deposits into their Emotional Bank Accounts. That way, when you need to ask something of them, you are working from a healthy balance rather than one that is overdrawn.

Friends & Family

This is where the “First 7 minute Rule” really rocks.

Like me, you may bring your work home with you. Like me, you may often be so consumed with your issues that you neglect to consider that your family may have their own.

Well I should say, I used to. Now when my kids wake up and when my wife wakes up (I am an early riser – a legacy of 23 years as a competitive swimmer), when I first greet them I do so with a warm smile, open arms and a focus on making their day right from the first moment. The smiles, hugs and kisses are worth it!

Perhaps, most importantly, at day’s end, on the way back home, I ask myself about 7 minutes from home, “How would the best husband and father, act when he comes through the door at home and greets his family?” (Please adapt this to whatever role(s) you are fulfilling).

Not only does this exercise prepare you, it ensures you are in the right relaxed state of mind to maximise that first 7 minutes where you are totally focused on them. Your children can fill you with their excited stories that they are bursting to tell you. Your spouse or partner can off-load their cares and concerns. Remember, they don’t necessarily want solutions (a note particularly to those other guys reading this); they just want you to listen.

Do that and you are filling your Emotional Bank Account.

Do that and you will generate massive returns!

Do that and you can far more simply, effectively and consistently then ask them if you can make a phone call or do some work.

Just do it!

<img alt="http://www.john-wiseman.com/photography/HG5.JPG

Do all of the above and your time will no longer fly; it will soar! Do this and you will create time! Do this and you will have a new lease on life because time is life. So use your 7 minutes wisely and to effect!

Time heals all wounds

Which has been your experience? Time flies or time soars? So which do you owe yourself, your team and your family? What changes are you prepared to make so that time works for you rather irks you?

What is Unique Selection Proposition

Unique Selection Proposition is a term I coined (as far as I could check on the web) to define an individual's special qualities that make him/her THE candidate for a job/position.

A Lot!

for starters there are 7 parameters to look at:

1. Size of the letters

2. Slant of the writing

3. space/alignment to the straight line

4. pressure on paper while writing

5. dotting the i

6. crossing the t

7. the y,g loop

each one is detailed
Over 20 articles on resume skills.
Over 100 resume tips.
No sample resumes, but I did create a list of some creative resume templates

But here is the kicker, I never did write anything about 'How To Write A Resume'

So, here goes.

Resume writing is geared towards one thing and one thing only 'getting you an interview'

That is it. A good, well written resume, will create that path for you and then your selection will depend upon more things than just your resume.

First things first.

1. Its about the audience.

Some questions to answer when you sit down to write your resume:
Imagine yourself a product or service, now this is what your resume has to provide answers to:
- What are you selling? YOU
- What are its benefits? Your specials. Your strengths. What will you bring to the company, the job role.
- Why should people be interested in it? If there are another 1000 people applying for the same job, why should someone call you for the interview. It has to show up on your resume
- What is better about your product or service than others in the marketplace? Do you have a USP? A USP is unique selling proposition.
Lets call it UNIQUE SELECTION PROPOSITION for your resume template.

2. Most resume templates - have an objective. This is often misused, wasted and in some cases - simply ridiculous.
The top paragraph of your resume is very very important.
see more 'Get Immediate response using the Objective Of Your Resume'
http://www.myeclatcoach.com/2007/11/resume-skills-obejective-onof-your.html

3. Use Simple Words
for the word 'simple' these are the synonyms
child's play, cinch*, clean, easy as pie, effortless, elementary, facile, incomplex, intelligible, light, lucid, manageable, mild, no problem, no sweat, not difficult, picnic, piece of cake, plain, quiet, self-explanatory, simple as ABC, smooth, snap*, straightforward, transparent, uncomplicated, uninvolved, unmistakable, untroublesome, walkover

for resume?
CV, abstract, bio, biography, curriculum vitae, digest, epitome, précis, recapitulation, review, rundown, sum, summary, summation, summing-up, synopsis, vita, work history

The point I am trying to make is, you can make something indurate (hard) and exasperate(irritate) recruiters by using words that don't belong.

use simple words.
pssst.. also use action words.
see Resume POWER words. Use these words in your resume to increase effectiveness
http://www.myeclatcoach.com/2009/12/resume-keywords.html

4. People buy benefits not features
In the product world you don't buy a CRDi engine, you buy the mileage or the ease of maintenance of that engine.
Its the benefit not the feature.
So just mentioning your designations & place of work as your feature, means nothing. what is the benefit from it?
are you someone who can create new revenue streams, manage projects, launch new services, what?
There could have been over 10 general managers of a particular property, unit etc, but each may have been instrumental in different things during their tenure.
one may be good with renovation, one with costs, one with revenues, and one with employee relations.
what is the benefit your features bring?

want an easy way to do this?
Think about the recruiter asking the question 'so what?'

e.g. your resume states '7 years experience with XYZ brand'
recruiter 'so what?'

5. Specifics sell, generalities do not
just writing on a resume, that you increased sales means nothing.
Increased sales by 20% y-o-y means something.
specifics.
always. 100% of the time!

6. Make sure your resume is believable.
I know.
I am sorry.
I did not mean to say you are lying on your resume or that your resume writing feels bogus.
I just mean, when you read some of the new age resume writing services produced- template created- resumes, you do wonder about the candidate.
Keep the jargon for the presentations.
Keep the jargon off the resume.

7. Make your resume look good.
Make no mistake, the content is the most important thing. I would hire a creative genius if he just sent in a note, but for all professional resumes, one must ensure it is good looking.
use resume templates, look at sample resumes, to determine the resume you want.
see ''Good Looking Resumes get Shortlisted. How to make yours Good looking!' http://www.myeclatcoach.com/2007/12/resume-skills-do-you-have-good-looking.html

8. Resume Layout.
Research shows that we spend more time on the top, the center and the bottom of any print/letter/ad etc.
use this effectively.
* the top has your 'resume objective'
* the middle has 'your experience' listed effectively.
see 'How to Talk about your work experience! Really Talk'
http://www.myeclatcoach.com/2007/11/resume-skills-talk-about-your-work.html
* the bottom should be more than just your address or your personal details. Use it creatively.
Think of it as a little reminder note to tell the reader, why you are special.
I may even be inclined to ask you to replace your personal details with your achievements as the last section on your resume template.

9. Write multiple resume copies.
start with atleast 3 different resume templates.
send out these templates.
see the response.
learn to improve the one that sticks.

10. Find a resume that you like, then write your resume using that as a template.
study resumes of friends, on sites etc.
If you like one (not the one that impresses you most, but the one you think you will call for an interview) use that to develop your personal resume template.

you don't have to use all the resume tips here.
As long as you use some, but whole-heartedly, you will be able to write a resume that could become a resume template for others!

happy resume writing!

p.s. Remember, it is a resume. it is only supposed to get you an interview. and please, please keep it less than 2 pages.

As a personal success coach, I tell people they should prepare.

prepare for the presentation, the meeting, the speech, and of course the job interview.

As a sceptic and someone who never did what was asked just because it was asked of me, I asked myself, why? Why should one prepare?

Look at it this way. The whole idea of an interview is that the people taking the interview (the company) think you are the best for the position. Now although you can prepare for some questions, how can you prepare for everything that will happen while you work there. Your success will be based on your ability to manage and manage effectively the unscripted parts. If that is the case, then the more you seem to have prepared your answers, the chances of your selection should be lower.

it rarely goes like that.

Let me give you some examples:.. click here to read the full article

or visit http://www.prabhjotbedi.com/professional-articles/why-you-should-go-prepared-for-an-interview

I consider dreaming skills one of those essential life skills that each of us should work hard at.

A skill is the ability to put the knowledge into good use.

Here is listed some basic knowledge of the same and more importantly ideas to put that knowledge into action/practice.

Dreaming according to some is akin to building castles in the air. I know, some of you may not really put that in the concrete things to do category, but the more I think of it the more I realize that one cannot create castles from thin air, but one also cannot create them without creating a mental picture of them first.

But dreaming is not just building a mental picture. It is also creating magical stories with imagination and definitely adding some amount of stretch. I will expand on these.

here's a basic definition of a good or positive dream:
1. It inspires
2. It is colorful and vivid
3. You can feel the dream as much as anything real around you
4. It makes you smile

I like the last one a lot.

So now that we know how to test a dream's effectiveness lets get down to how to dream:

1. Write down a life goal

2. Now think of an image that can demonstrate the essence of this goal

3. Now build on that image. think of other related images, videos, dialogue, scents, settings, people. bring everything into it.

4. You now have a rudimentary dream ready. Think of it before you sleep. keep it alive in your consciousness while you are nodding off.

5. When you wake up, I assure you the dream will be all the more prevailing and beautiful. It may or may not be the same you visualized earlier, but the dream would have captured the subject your subconscious is most fascinated with at the moment.

Want an example?

1. Write down a life goal
e.g. Winning an award.

2. Now think of an image that can demonstrate the essence of the goal
e.g. Me holding the award, in a tux, on a beautiful lit stage.

3. Now build on that image. think of other related images, videos, dialogue, scents, settings, people. bring everything into it.
e.g thunderous applause
music
the presenter giving more details
the acceptance speech
the thank you, thank you, thank you

4. You now have a rudimentary dream ready. Think of it before you sleep.
e.g. I did.

5. When you wake up, I assure you the dream will be all the more prevailing and beautiful.
e.g. The dream when I woke up was awesome!

Now that the dream is so vivid and magical, it starts to inspire me.
Every time I feel I cannot go on, the dream makes it so much easier.
I can taste the award, the love and the glory.
I always smile when I think about the dream.

There you have it.
Dreaming Skills.
A very important part of Life Skills

Happy Living!

The list is from here.

I thought I would try and add some value to it.

1. Look at your achievements in school or at work
the phrase 'past success may not guarantee future results' is true for most of the financial markets and services, but for us - individuals - this is as good a yardstick as any.
dont look at the marksheets here, think of the times when some activity, some victory, some cause made you restless with excitement and you could barely wait to get to school/work again.

I remember an accountant becoming feverish for the volleyball tournament at work. he was vocal, creative and cheered with such passion you would think him a marketing man.

2. Identify your favorite hobbies and activities
I love good movies. I love great TV shows better. I love super books even more. But I really really love path-breaking ideas and innovations.
My hobby (tracking innovation) and the resulting activity it generates in me is irreplaceable.
What's yours?

3. Talk with friends and family members
two things I read somewhere come to mind:
a. you are the average of the 5 people you keep the most company of.
b. if you want to be something, find people who are already that and be with them.

Your current freinds and family members maynot really know the desires that you have or the potential that you possess. For me take this feedback more for negative traits than positive ones.

4. Consult with a professional counselor
its a question of trust.
if you see someone who has achieved what you dream of or has helped others do the same, you may want to consult with a professional. however most counselors in schools and colleges are as limited in their outlook as the parents.
here are some leads (I have not worked with them and neither do I endorse them) http://www.parivarthan.org/, http://ushagoyal.com/

5. Keep a journal
I do and I can attest to the power of a journal.
I have a small pocket size one for when I travel, a larger version for longer thoughts, an online one that records 5 things/thoughts for everyday & I use the my mac/phone to record a video log for the day.
Its fun, insightful (I know my memory is weakening -) ) and helps me keep ideas in one place.

if you have concerns on How Long to Form a Habit? And What You Can Do Towards It... go to http://www.myeclatcoach.com/2009/09/how-long-to-form-habit-and-what-you-can.html

buy some Butterflies Journal (Notebook, Diary) & Moleskine Ruled Notebook Large

6. Write a personal mission statement

what is a personal mission statement?
A personal mission statement is a written affirmation of what you want to be or aspire to be.
It is a personal guiding light for you to ensure you are always on your right path.

A personal mission statement is powerful. It not only helps you decide what to do, it ensures you do not do things that do not fit in with who you are or wanting to be. A personal mission statement motivates, challenges and helps you look at the bigger picture.

I have one.
I have had one since I was introduced to Steven Covey The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People & the 8th habit The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness: Miniature Edition

This is also a starting point for my effort 7 Days To A Remarkable You. You should start here

7. Set short-term and long-term goals

Goals are very powerful.
They take a life of their own once you spell them out.
Goals should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely (see here)

I am also a huge fan of daydreaming (see here) & manifestation (see here | 10 steps for manifestation)

Sharing your goals can get you so much more. Support, Ideas, like minded people & above all wishes. click here to know more about sharing your goals

I would also suggest reading Set Compelling Outcomes For Yourself - http://www.myeclatcoach.com/2008/12/set-compelling-outcomes-for-yourself.html

8. Job shadow and talk to people in a variety of positions

My career decision can largely be attributed to a successful individual already pursuing the cause ( see I am not me any more )
My subsequent success and learning is from people I could shadow, observe, emulate and sometimes learn from their errors and omissions.

Most people would be happy to help you.

Just Ask.

9. Sign up for a crash course in an area of interest

Of course this assumes you have finally figured out an area of interest and there are crash courses in that area.
sometimes this is daunting.
some cultures, families do not look kindly at wasting time so to speak. I would suggest this only after the knowledge and support of the ones you feel responsible to.

10. Take career and personality quizzes

I took some tests myself. to see my results, click here
