It makes the room look larger than it is. But I thought I'd tapped into my darker side. So I repainted a wall in a darker shade. The idea was to have it look like an unfinished concrete wall. It didn't quite turn out as such but I'm still way happy with the outcome. And it wasn't difficult to achieve. I first painted the wall with a coat of dark grey paint without bothering about even coverage.

While waiting for the paint to dry to the touch, I took out some of the remaining paint and tinted it with an acrylic black paint which I bought from an art store in One-Utama (great store!)

Then I took a dry sponge, dipped it in the paint and just dab and drag it on the wall in a haphazard fashion. Done. The result is even more dramatic at night.

Update on DIY Projects

When we were renovating our unit in Armanee, I started a scrapbook of sort which became my faithful companion. Whether it was a meeting with the contractors or going to the hardware store, the scrapbook followed. It contains favourite magazine clippings and paint swatches which I used to visualise the look I wanted for a particular space in the unit.

But somehow, our dining room still ended up being, by far, the most painted room in the unit. It was originally in the default cream. Then, I had the contractors painted it in this colour.

Which was okay at first but then, I found it a bit subdued. So I repainted the room white.

That didn't work for me either. Yes, the room was brighter but BORING. So, I repainted it yet again!

And folks, I think we have a WINNER. Getting some time off work from Christmas till the new year. Woohoo! It can only mean one thing for me. ID time!! I've made a mental list of things to do (and hopefully complete) but I can't decide which to attempt first. Normally, I'd go with a project (if I have few lined up) that I'm most hyped about. Which means it's now a tossup between painting a wall and painting my dressers. Yep, those dressers which I had previously stained are going to get a make-over. Complete with new hardware. I'm actually toying with the idea of adding casters on them but that will mean modifying their legs...emmm, have to ponder more on that...

The other thing which I wanted to share with you is my latest 'acquisition'.

I've been dreaming of owning this bedside table ever since I saw it displayed at Brunomenzi. It's made from solid mahogany and comes in wenge. But at RM1888, it was waaaaay over my budget for a bedside table. And I wanted a pair.

But good things DO come to those who wait. The Brunomenzi showroom at The Curve was relocating (to another lot), so they had a sale. HUGE discounts on everything you could find in the store. Guess how much I paid for my bedside tables?

A 'whopping' RM388 each!

Yep, I got my pair for less than half the price of one. The tables are in pristine condition and I can't be happier. The best part is, I didn't even know about the sale. Just happened to pop into The Curve for lunch with hubby and stumbled onto it :)=)

Our bedroom is almost complete.

Modern Planters - Part 2

My modern planters are ready. And if I do, I am almost certain that they will cost an arm and a leg. But they are super duper cool.

So I've opted for the next best thing...make my very own. Of course, I've had help. To begin with, there's IKEA. I had the light bulb moment (of making my own modern planters) when I stumbled onto IKEA's Ivar boxes. Such simple construction but sooo much potential for hacking.

Truth of the matter is, I didn't have to do any hacking whatsoever except to drill a couple of holes on the underside of the boxes to allow proper drainage. I painted the exterior of the boxes with aluminum paint but left the inside untreated (fearing that whatever finishing I apply will interact with the soil and may even be toxic to the plant). Although castors would be practical for moving the planters about, I've opted not to install them as I plan to deck the balcony (pocket permitting), hence, they will be slightly raised from the floor. Besides, castors will just take the 'cool' factor away, hehehe.

Perfect for housing my heliconias.

Oh, in case you're wondering, Mot got into the box all by herself.

Mot

This is Mot (short for "Comot"). She's PG's playmate and BF. She's the baby of the two and the cheekiest. She LOVES to climb and get into trouble. I sometimes think that trouble finds her and not the other way around. She can be aloof and needy depending on her mood. But most of the time, she's just plain adorable. Unlike PG, she meows to her name when called, or the very least, wag her tail if she's slumbering. And she goes limp when we hold her. But not before trying to be one with the floor...especially if she knows that she's done something wrong.

We nearly took her sibling home with us but changed our mind at the very last minute. She was the tiniest of the litter then and surprise, surprise...the noisiest. Once I held her, she was quiet as a mouse. And I was sold.

Mot taught PG how to use the litter box...yeah, go figure! And that there is no such thing as "boundaries". She wakes us up in the morning and makes our heart stop beating whenever she attempts to defy gravity!

She loves her wet food treats. And walks all over us as if we're pieces of furniture. She'll wait until I'm just about to close the last leaf of the folding doors before rocketing out onto the balcony...and always looks back at me with a smirk on her face. After staying indoors all that time whilst the doors were wide open!

Here's to MOT who is 1 today.

<img style="display:block; She celebrated her 1st birthday last Saturday (5.7.08).

We love cats. Initially, we had toyed with the idea of adopting one (or two) from the RSPCA or PAWS. As fate would have it, a trip to a nearby pet store (hubby wanted to get an aquarium for his office) resulted in an addition to our family unit. PG and I locked eyes the minute I saw her in her cage, placed just outside the store. As corny as it sounds, we had a moment and I felt a connection. Hubby fell in love with her as well. We decided to go home and sleep on it and so... we did. Went home that is.

But we didn't get to the 'sleep on it' part. Having decided to throw caution to the wind, within minutes we were back at the store, all giddy with excitement but apprehensive as well at the prospect of bringing PG home. The store owner gushed that PG was nearly taken away but suspecting how really fond I was of her, she had persuaded the other interested party to take her sibling instead. And so that was that. The 'touching-up' process is taking longer than expected. We still have the contractors coming over on Saturdays to do the little things like minor paintwork, changing door knobs, unplugging blocked water trap, etc. The place is otherwise completed. It is now the time for us to recuperate ... physically, emotionally and financially. It's a good thing because I'm still playing with ideas in my head in terms of furnishing. I keep reminding myself that LESS IS MORE. So I'm editing stuff in my head as I go along. Built-ins have gained more attention and respect from me. I'm liking them more these days as they ultimately mean less furniture to carry when we move (we have yet to reach our dream destination you see...). But I still like the odd stand alone pieces. I'm resisting the urge to decorate in a rush and make costly impulse purchases. Decorating should be a continuing creative process.

So far, I've simply placed our furniture and stuff at their designated room or space, just so we can move around easily. I've only hung curtains in the bedroom to afford us some privacy in the interim (it's a good thing I brought my old curtains along). Even though I haven't embarked on my decorating journey, the house is beginning to feel more and more like a home everyday.

Here's some post-reno photos for your viewing pleasure. I've also just discovered 'alfresco' in photobucket and have gone into alfresco overdrive :)

Kitchen

Living and Dining
Both the sofa and armchairs have been reupholstered to give them a modern vibe. Our new master suite now has a door frame.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kcT8jmqn-Vw/R9f2c-awHiI/AAAAAAAAAF0/-CH87z6gBmo/s320/updates200020.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176877274337648162" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kcT8jmqn-Vw/R9f2w-awHjI/AAAAAAAAAF8/nwCuU5gf5O4/s320/updates200019.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176877617935031858" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kcT8jmqn-Vw/R9f3D-awHkI/AAAAAAAAAGE/5Zm3hlDe360/s320/updates200017.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176877944352546370" />
And the master ensuite has a new door, plus, the wall on the other side has been sealed. I wanted the ambiance created by sunken lights but hate the idea of losing a considerable amount of ceiling height in the process. So we went searching high and low for surface mounted downlights which aren't as chunky as ones used in Armanee's common corridors. We managed to find them at Maruzen. The best thing about them is that they come in two sizes and in silver colour. Plus, we get to use energy saving bulbs, which cut our electricity bill tremendously. The ceiling fans are from Maruzen as well but we found out later that you can get them cheaper at one of the shops in Bandar Sri Damansara which sells bathroom and kitchen fittings :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kcT8jmqn-Vw/R9f9Z-awHrI/AAAAAAAAAG4/VuEN8ACQTt0/s320/updates200011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176884919379435186" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kcT8jmqn-Vw/R9f-BuawHsI/AAAAAAAAAHA/HF13htdOFsM/s320/updates200013.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176885602279235266" />

Armanee Renovation - Week 1

I couldn't wait until Saturday to have a peek at the work that has been done to our Armanee unit. When the day came, I was thrilled to see bags and bags of broken bricks and debris greeting us at the gate. I was even more pleased to see the extent of the renovation work. The contractors have made really good progress. So I'm secretly confident that we may just be able to get all the renovation plus installations and fittings completed by the time we move in. Below are a few before and after photos of our unit.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kcT8jmqn-Vw/R7wI0jx_WyI/AAAAAAAAAEk/tWwNK5ier3E/s400/updates200050.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169016171365620514" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kcT8jmqn-Vw/R7wJPDx_WzI/AAAAAAAAAEs/vlcj4vcYBlk/s400/updates200080.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169016626632153906" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kcT8jmqn-Vw/R7wJ9jx_W0I/AAAAAAAAAE0/mU0DytvqGKk/s400/updates200051.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169017425496070978" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kcT8jmqn-Vw/R7wLhTx_W1I/AAAAAAAAAE8/R7PDr7GNRic/s400/updates200079.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169019139188022098" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kcT8jmqn-Vw/R7wL_jx_W2I/AAAAAAAAAFE/YMugdZd0pys/s400/updates200054.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169019658879064930" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kcT8jmqn-Vw/R7wMhTx_W3I/AAAAAAAAAFM/RTeIYb1wpJc/s400/updates200078.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169020238699649906" />
The kitchen instantly looks bigger after removing the partial walls. Well, hubby hates the idea of having the 'in-your-face' water heater. This way, we'll only have two knobs i.e. one for cold water and the other for hot. And maybe a shower hose for bathing the cats. Hehe. Another boiler will also be installed in the new ensuite bathroom. Sweet!

Well, that's all for now folks :))

Armanee Renovation

After what seems like an eternity, the day has finally come for the contractors to start renovation works on Armanee. You see, we opted to refinance our loan for Armanee ('cos our current financier is killing us with its high interest rate!) way back in September-October 2007 and are still waiting for the drawdown. The good news is we've managed to secure tenants for our Park Avenue unit (through a realestate agent) and time is of the essence as they plan to move in sometime in the third week of March 2008. So we decided to pay the first instalment for the renovation out of our own pockets and instructed the contractors to start work ASAP.

As there are no super major works, the estimated completion date is end of March. But we're more inclined to move once all the structural work is completed.

This is the original layout of the unit (intermediate)

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kcT8jmqn-Vw/R7FSuTx_WdI/AAAAAAAAABQ/FdZYDIHt0PI/s400/NC129.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5166001203108075986" />

We are removing the partial walls and leveling the floors in the dry and wet kitchens, hence, merging the two. We are also removing the wall separating the family room and bedroom 3. Bedroom 3 (and 2) suffers from lack of natural light. So the idea was to convert it into a dressing room (since it wasn't appealing as a guest room) whilst turning the family room into our master suite, complete with a balcony. We're leaving just a partial wall to separate the sleeping and dressing areas. Now, every master suite must have its own ensuite bathroom, so, close the entrance to the shared bathroom from bedroom 2 and voila! we have an ensuite.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kcT8jmqn-Vw/R7FiJjx_WgI/AAAAAAAAABo/pfZUD8XIyKs/s400/modified+Armanee+layout.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5166018163933927938" />
I also toyed with the idea of hacking the walls along the upper staircase (in the master bedroom and bedroom 2) i.e. creating a square window on each wall, which will be closed up with a sheet of frame-less tempered glass. That would have definitely brought much needed light into bedroom 3 (which is intended to be the study room), as well as illuminating the staircase during the day. But alas, the proposal was turned down by the management. *sigh*

Lastly, the family/audio room will be relocated to the original master bedroom. On the plus side, attending to ones nature call during a good movie or F1 race will only involve a short trip from the sofa, hehehe.

I will be dropping by this weekend to get some shots of the 'damage' done.

Moving...again

Wow! It's been THAT long since I last posted an entry. Well, remember Armanee?? We'll be moving there soon. Once all the renovation and installation work are completed of course. I can't wait! There are a couple of reasons for the move but the one that's high on my list is that I get to indulge in my passion...interior decorating of course! Oh the excitement and pain of trying to come up with some sort of a theme for our new abode. Should I stick with classic contemporary or go for a more modern feel? The resort look is kinda appealing as well. I'm actually veering towards contemporary -resort with modern touches...whatever that means, hehehehe. For me, that translates to having a mixture of chic yet casual furniture and may be modern, no fuss light fixtures. Bottom line is, it all depends on our budget. I would consider it a personal triumph if I could make the place look a million dollars without having to spend anywhere near that amount. Not that we have a million dollars to begin with, hahahah. Let the challenge begin...

The Dresser Project...continued

I managed to find some free time to finish the dressers...well, one dresser actually. I threw caution to the wind and experimented further by adding triangular patterns on the top and sides of the dresser. I started by faintly marking the pattern boundaries with a pencil like so...

...and used some Nippon Timber Finish in Meranti leftover from my previous project (more of that later) to fill in the triangles. The dressers have both been previously stained with Ikea's antique finish.

Then I stained the entire dresser using Nippon Timber Finish in Mahogany. It looks pretty darn good. But I think another coat would make it awesome.

This is how it looks next to its naked sibling.

This is the wardrobe which I had previously stained to match the wall shelf above our bed. Please ignore the hideous (okay, maybe it's not THAT bad looking) headboard which will soon be covered up with some pretty fabric.

It is not exact but close. This was achieved with some Ikea's black finish (that's forever out of stock, *sigh*) and Nippon Timber Finish in Meranti.

Okaaay, so what are you waiting for??? Have an idea? Just run with it! Do not be afraid to experiment. You might be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. Better still, why not share your ideas with the world? Just e-mail me your name or nick (and link if you have a blog or flickr account) and details of your ID project(s)(photos would be great!) by 28 February 2007. I'll post them here at a later date.

This could turn out to be flop i.e. nobody sends in anything, but hey, life's too short.

If Walls Could Speak

Generally, I dislike bare or empty walls. They simply do not inspire me and I like to be inspired even when I'm just staring at a wall. But dressing up a wall can be tricky and the last thing you want is to end up with a wall of nails or holes because you've changed your mind countless times. A professional interior designer may have a formula when it comes to hanging your favourite masterpiece but an amateur like me rely purely on emotions and colour harmonisation. I normally start by looking at or deciding on the function of the space. Is it used for resting or entertaining? Etc. Then I decide on the mood that I want to evoke. Happy? Nostalgic? Exclusive? Feminine? Masculine? Fresh? Intimate?(and believe me, the list can go on forever). Next, I look at colour harmonisation. Does the painting or deco item ties in with the colour scheme or theme that I'm going for? And last but not least, do I like it?? There is no point to the whole exercise if I don't like a painting but am compromising because it fits the theme, for instance. I mean, I will have to look at it 24-7!

Which brings me to the painting by Ramon Pujol above. I've created a little reading nook at home (I love houses which look and feel lived-in and nothing, I think, evokes a feeling of homeliness better than books....except the wonderful aroma of a home-cooked meal wafting from your kitchen, of course)...

...and was looking for an art piece which would make the space 'sparkle'. I finally found it here in the form of a painting by Ramon Pujol (in print), which has since taken centre stage on the wall above my sideboard.

These days I can stare at this particular wall for hours...

Moving on...

The calligraphy came in heavily gilded frames which I decided to dispose off and replace with clean black frames, in keeping with my contemporary theme. They're visible the moment I step into my home, as I intended them to be.

I love how this abstract painting consumes almost the entire wall and provides an interesting backdrop for the antique Oriental cabinet.

Who said your kitchen wall has to be boring. My cushions await their covers. I've managed to complete one cover and this is how I did it:

First of all, I measured and cut all the pieces I would need for 4 (65cm x 65cm) cushions. Then I simply sewed the sides and ends of one piece (on the wrong side) so the fabric won't fray at the sides and you'll get nicely finished hems at the ends (as you can see in the photo above, I've marked the hem by measuring and pressing it with a hot iron but haven't gone on to stitching it yet but you get the idea, right?).

I then measured and folded one end of the fabric to get a 65cm x 65cm pocket (still working on the wrong side of the fabric) and folded the remaining fabric on top i.e. overlapping the first fold. See:

I sewed the sides together and turned the finished product inside out. Voila!

The Weekend Project

This project was meant to be completed for Aidilfitri last year but due to lack of time, it got shelved until now. It's just a simple project which involves a bit of sewing (nothing fancy mind you). I wanted to have a couple of throw cushions for the living room sofa and arm chairs to tie in with my new baby blue curtains (well it isn't that new anymore, heh). So I bought a few big cushions from Ikea and decided to sew their covers myself. Here's the fabric I bought which would make two cushion cover. I also bought another fabric for another set, which keeps with the blue theme.

More to come...

Retro Floral Table Lamp

My recent acquisition...

Discovered this at Living Quarters One Utama. I guess it's a tall order since we also want them cheap, hehe. I really like the ones used as part of the landscaping at our condo but I'm pretty sure they are quite costly. Oh well, we'll just have to keep looking. Anyway, I have since stained the deck with a darker wood finish, which also helps protect the deck from the rain as it acts like a waterproof film.

Our frangipani, which we thought was nearing death and almost threw away, has grown new leaves and is coming along nicely. Hubby has even bought another to keep it company, heh. The new one will have dark pink flowers with orange tint inside.

Even our yucca is sprouting new shoots left and right. Hubby is so proud!

He tends to the garden every day, watering the plants, pruning them if needed, re-potting as the plants grow bigger, etc. Oh, and there are additions to the family namely a hibiscus tree, African daisies, geraniums and chrysanthemums. I've also added river stones along the borders of the deckings. Whenever it rains heavily, the drain literally becomes a river with the rain water passing through the stones, way cool!

The Raya Project

Okay, I haven't done any ID projects in a while. But Eid, which just passed, was a good excuse to put the finishing touches to our master bedroom and washroom. No extensive work done. Just additions here and there. We bought Stranda dressers from Ikea and I've stained them in Ikea's antique finish. To personalise them, I've used black watercolour to draw simple lines along the sides and top. I've yet to complete this little project and the next step is to stain the dressers further in a warmer hue. I've even bought a Nippon wood finish in mahogany, ready to be used. This will also later prevent the black lines from rubbing-off as it's water-based. Now how did it stick to the dresser in the first place you may ask? Well Ikea's stain is also water-based. Just some free info, hehe. To finish, I plan to have a custom-cut beveled-edged glass placed on the top of each dresser. Perfection!

Here's a couple of photos of how the process went:

The parts...

The stain in close-up...

The frame...

The black lines on the side...

There is one for me and one for hubby. The room is pretty small and the king-sized bed has taken up most of the floor space. But I still need ample storage for this and that. I didn't want a built-in wardrobe as I fear it would overwhelm the space (since most built-ins are from floor to ceiling). So the dressers and Ikea's Stranda wardrobe have worked fine for me. I've placed a large mirror just above the dressers and the table lamp is a great find for me! I've actually bought a pair. I just love table lamps! The shades can be changed to fit the mood of a room. For instance, I can go oriental one month or shabby chic the next. As long as you stick with a classic looking stand of course.

Cameron Highlands

I just came back from Cameron Highlands after a 3-days, 2-nights stay at the Equatorial. The weather was fine, colder than the time we last went which was in 2000. The biggest highlight of my stay in Cameron was having high-tea at the Jim Thompson Tea Room at the Cameron Highlands Resort. I just want to share some photos I took while I was in the highlands. venture outside my unit. Here's a couple of photos of the common area in Park Avenue which is not visible from the outside, since the common area is located on level 9 and connected to the two blocks via a sky bridge on each side.

This is an aerial view of the pool area from Block A.

Just walk up here and to your left. We bought our decking pieces in One Utama. But guess what, Ikea is selling theirs at RM9.90 and they are a lot nicer looking, plus about 1/2 inch wider. Oh well, win some, lose some. The balcony isn't quite completed yet. We intend to stain the deckings to a darker colour and add some river stones on the sides to add texture. I would love to have some sort of a water feature, but nothing elaborate or fancy. Just a contemporary looking one. But it's just too much work because we'll need to sort out the water and power source. We'll just have to wait until we get a proper house with some land one day. In the mean time, as my hubby always says, "angan-angan free"...so dream to your heart's content....

For the time being, this is our dream garden in the sky...well almost!

And now there are 3...

This is Amira, my niece. She'll be starting school next year. She's such a darling.

And the cheeky looking one is Atikah, Amira's younger sister. I'm always worried whenever she's not in sight. She used to be the baby in the family but now she has a new sister, Anisah. Anisah had her 'cukur jambul' last month. She practically slept through it all. Heh.

This is my youngest maternal uncle, fondly known as Busu holding Anisah during the 'cukur'jambul'.

Just to share a bit of family background. And to show you this.

My dad made this screen himself. He took apart the original Indian screen which he got as a gift from a friend and assembled a new and bigger one with the use of a few pieces of stained glass. And his handiwork can be seen throughout the whole house, from the built-in wardrobes in the bedrooms to the shoe cabinet in the foyer and my mom's side buffet in the dining room. So I guess you can say that creativity runs in the family. My mom used to make the gowns which we wore when we were toddlers and bake our birthday cakes every year. I can almost taste the butter cake with butter cream icing in my mouth. Yummy! Don't you just love walking down memory lane now and again...
