This past week has been concentrated on building muscle. On past occassions when this occured, I did not lose weight -- in fact, that week I gained 0.2 pounds! I did not want to step on the scale today because I feared nothing good was going to come of it!

Weight Last Week: 159.6
Current Weight: 157.8
Week Difference: 1.8
Week Percent Loss: 1.04%

Total Weight Loss: 15.4
Total Percent Loss: 8.89%
Pounds to go: 22.8
Progress to goal: 40.31% along to goal weight

Starting Weight: 173.2
Goal Weight: 135.0
End Goal Percent Loss: 22.06%

When this is added to my weight loss before the contest, I am more than halfway along!

My big bad no-no's of the week:

1. I had Mexican food on Monday night. I had leftovers from it on Tuesday. Not that Mexican food is bad, but I had beans and rice--according to The Plan from The Gym, they are never to be eaten at dinner and never be eaten together in the same week. HA!

2. During the course of the week, I ate an entire bag of blue corn organic chips (lightly salted) and lots of homemade salsa. HA!

3. I had those organic veggie corn dogs that have a lot of sodium.

4. What, did you think I was going to say that I ate a fried chicken or something?

I just cannot stop grinning!

Last night when I was on my road trip, I crossed over quite a few milestones. The most significant one has nothing to do with weight loss. One of the more minor ones is this:

Last night, while on a walk with a friend, I crossed the 1000 mile mark in walking. I have walked 1000 miles (and now a bit more) since July 9th, 2007. While the people at The Gym tell me that I am losing weight on their plan, I hate to tell them that fruits and veggies are nothing new to me.

For those that are mathematical like me:

1000 miles = about 2,000,000 steps
I walk at 2 steps/second.
I have walked 1,000,000 seconds.
Or 16,666 minutes.
Or 278 hours.
In 126 days.

That's about 2 hours a day. (I usually do three hours on days that I have off work.)

The one thing that I am sad about is that I did not fall down -- by a door or otherwise. I guess perhaps I did proverbially. I don't know. We'll see.

And just in case you were wondering...

I live 23,389 steps away from the airport. I found that out this morning when I returned my rental car and walked home!

I must be losing weight. This morning I was brushing my teeth in my undies. Midway through they fell off because they are just too big for me (mind you, the elastic in them was still quite good!)

I would almost go shopping for undies, but why buy something that I will wear only for a week or two? I can survive until I finish the process. Besides, isn't that what safety pins are for?

Something tells me that soon I will have a LOT of scrub rags. As in 40+ pairs (thank you Mom for being afraid that I am always wearing holey ones, even when you just bought the last round only a couple months before).

About a week or so ago I announced that I was wearing a size 12. At the time, I did not divulge what exactly that size 12 was, so now is the time to clarify the size issues.

At the beginning of April when I said I was NOT going to go up yet another size (i.e. to a 16), I was a bit indecently stuffed into my pair of size 14 jeans with an elastic back. The indecent part is that the were tight across the area right below my belly button where I have my largest front 'tire'. Combine that with the rear end and you have problems. Just about everyone was unaware of this little issue because I always wear something that covers my middle and these pants were incredibly baggy everyone else (as in the bottom of the rear end, thighs, and legs).

By the summer, after losing about five pounds, the pants fit much better.

I still was wearing the pants at the beginning of the competition. They were even looser, but were now technically 'fitting' me. I have not put them on for a number of weeks and do not intend to put them on again unless it is Halloween 2008 or beyond. Most likely they will become quilt blocks!

Since then, I have been wearing my size 14 'skinny jeans'. On occassions in the past when my weight was down (from not eating for a few days or when I went to a reunion after having my wisdom teeth out), I was able to pair them with a pair of Spanx and just squeeze into them. I can now wear them sans Spanx, sans holding my breath while zipping, and sans walking around with my mother telling me that they really do not fit!

The 12 I wore the other week was a skirt. Skirts from my closet are much more forgiving because they are not short or tight. However, the fact that I was wearing a skirt that I had not worn since 2004 did help matters.

This morning I pulled one of the big crates of outgrown clothes down from my closet. I remember in 2003-2004, I refused to move up to a 14 and mostly wore two pairs of bottoms: my overalls and my carpenter pants. The carpenters were closest to the top and were the testing ones.

These carpenters were always tight through the rear and stomach, but baggy elsewhere (as per the style of the day). I did not have on any Spanx but figured that if I could just get them on... that would be good enough!

I got them on,,,

I got them buttoned...

I am sitting here in them right now and I do not have a stomach ache while doing so!

Cool!

I really wish that the same story was going on above the belt with other areas, but I know that will eventually come. I am just pleased to be dropping the weight as well as I am.

For those of you that may think otherwise, walking does pay off. For example, last night I walked eight miles (yes, eight miles). This equates out to two steps per second and took 2.5 hours. My route is not an easy one -- in this town it is not hard to find big hills and you know that I am out to climb them all!

So this morning while I was on the phone with my mom and she was chastising me for suggesting a trip to the Olive Garden on their next visit down, I told her what I ate yesterday (a lot of beef ravioli covered with fat free cheese, a handful of peanut M&Ms, plus other regular good stuff) and she was sure I had put on weight. Actually...

I am down a few ounces!

Oh yeah, walking (or any physical exercise) is good!

Although all of this is very exciting and my life is going okay, I am still suffering my depression for the Smell The Color Nine.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=hpz8aJqAdAM

Yet again I have not been the best blogger. What a week.

This week I ate a lot of bad stuff. I had a magic cookie bar and Culver's frozen custard on Monday. Tuesday night/Wednesday lunch saw the disappearance of an entire loaf of Parmesan-Garlic foccasia bread (like a 3-lb. loaf...). Friday when I got home from shopping I had a bowl of beef ravioli with shreaded Italian cheese blend on top (about 2 servings). Friday night I had a huge smoothie at Ben and Jerry's on State Street (granted, I had it made with Black Raspberry frozen yogurt, but still it was 20 ounces!).

Other than this, I ate my normal fare. 135.0
End Goal Percent Loss: 22.06%

This brings my total weight loss since April 1st to 18.2 pounds. This brings my weight loss since my last trip in early July to 15.2 pounds. I wonder if the difference would be noticeable to certain people yet...?

So how is it that I can lose weight when my diet is not perfect? And what can you do if you want to be like me?

Here are my three easy steps:

1. Water. Oh my gosh, drink water!!! While you are told to drink 64 ounces a day, I am averaging about a gallon a day. Yes, that if right. I have an old cranberry juice bottle (64 ounces) that I lug around. I have to drink one entire one during the work day and then one while I am at home. Based on my schedule, this means that I drink one between 8 am and 3 pm and another between 3 pm and 11 pm.

Of course, when I tell people this they say two things:
-Aren't you constantly in the bathroom? No. For the first few days I was because my body had to get used to it. After that, everything balanced out.
-But I am not that thirsty! Granted, the first few days you have to make yourself drink it. After that, you actually crave it. It's weird, but it works.

Other liquids can drank too in addition to water. I drink a lot of milk and Bolthouse Strawberry-Banana and Blue Goodness Smoothies (only 8 ounces of smoothie a day). Avoid juice unless you squeeze it yourself. No soda (regular or diet) at all because that just messes up the ionic balance (salts) in your body.(and it is a diaretic).

2. Calories. You have to count your calories. Eat what you want, but in moderation. You can have ice cream, but don't eat the entire pint. Eat a half cup of it. If you want to lose weight, eat 300 calories less than 10 times your weight. For example, I currently weigh 161.8, so I eat about 1300 calories (161.8*10=1618, 1618-300=1318).

Also, stop eating four hours before you go to bed. If you get hungry before bed, drink a glass of water. Do not eat any protein at breakfast. Do not eat fruit, starches, or sugar after 3 pm (or 8 hours before bed). Include a leafy green vegetable (this does not include head or leaf lettuce) with your dinner. Eat at least a cucumber a day.

3. Move!!! It does matter if you walk or run or do pilates or whatever. You have to get your heart rate up and keep it up there! I usually aim for about 140 beats per minute and keep it there for a good 25 minutes or so when doing cardio. In addition to this, I walk somewhere between 5 and 8 miles a day (up from my normal 2-3 miles a day before). A healthy person should walk 10,000 steps a day -- this equals about 4.5 to 5 miles a day, depending on the length of your stride. If you continued your current diet and just added the 10,000 steps a day, you would lose about 10 pounds a year.

And yes, it takes 2-3 hours to walk that much. However, I have found that it is a good way to get rid of stress. You have a lot of time to think about everything that is going on in your life and to figure out how to take care of it. Or take along a friend and you can push each other to keep going.

Alright, I need to go for a walk! As much as I would like to enjoy my weekly victory, I have other things on my mind today and I need to go figure them out.

Addendum:
The last week has been exciting for a number of reasons, so there have not been too many posts...

Last Friday I went to The Gym to be weighed in and was told that I weight 169.6 pounds. A body composition was done and supposedly I have more fat and less hydration and muscle than when I started the contest.

WHAT? How is this even possible? My pants no longer fit and the necklines on some of my tops are becoming a bit indecent!

For a good 15 minutes I was chewed out for eating protein bars from Wal-Mart instead of the 'approved' ones through The Gym by The Gym's company. Yeah, whatever. The amusing thing is that my bars have double the protein. They also have fiber! Unfortunately (according to owner of The Gym), they have 2 grams of sugar and he was sure that 4 grams of sugar a day is making me fat. Also, I must be eating a lot of salt.

The truth of the matter:
-Light salt makes me retain water like there is no tomorrow.
-Unlike my other teammates, I am not dehydrating myself with diet soda or coffee.
-So unlike my teammates, I actually look much different!

As a kid, I never rebeled. However, Saturday and Sunday I was a complete rebel when it came to food! I ate potatoes, corn, peas, and a lot of peanut M&M's. Now if I told this to the people at The Gym, they would probably go find some tree bark and make me eat that for a week.

I really thought I would be in hot water, but I was just so sick of eating lettuce, carrots, and protein all week to get my weight down. This morning, I daintily stepped on that scale...

Weight Last Week: 164.4
Current Weight: 163.0
Week Difference: 1.4
Week Percent Loss: 0.80%

Total Weight Loss: 10.2
Total Percent Loss: 5.89%
Pounds to go: 28.0
Progress to goal: 26.70% along to goal weight

Starting Weight: 173.2
Goal Weight: 135.0
End Goal Percent Loss: 22.06%

After this, I scooted over to The Gym and they recorded 163.4. This was a -6.2 pound difference. The lady that weighed me (and that helped chew me out on Friday) got really snotty and said I must be doing something to trick them. Oh yeah, I just live to trick you lady! Sheesh!!

I cannot wait until my real, official reveal at the end of all of this! This is so worth Reason #9. *ghetto nod*

Now I am off to eat a bar that my cousin-in-law sent home last night. Muhahahaha!

*random dance around room and bathroom...*

Holy cow! While dancing past the bathroom mirror I saw...

...clavicals!

When I went to The Gym today, I was put down again for not losing enough weight this week.

Mind you, I LOST 1.8 POUNDS!!!

According to them, I should have lost .2 pounds more. "We guarantee a lose of 2-3 pounds per week on our program." And I am not losing it. Their punishment for me: they are no longer going to sell me protein bars.

I tried my best to be disappointed and all, but thank goodness for all those years of acting back in school. First, perhaps if I weighed 300 pounds, I could lose 2-3 pounds a week. Even on the Biggest Loser show they have weeks where they do not lose that much! As for the protein bars -- the constipation bars -- I hate to tell them that I ran out of them some time ago and refuse to ever buy them again. Perhaps the reason why the bars supress your apetite if because they bind you up so bad that nothing else can go in!

Instead, I have been using two different kinds of bars. When I am at work, I have the South Beach Diet Meal Replacement Bars in chocolate and choco-peanut butter flavors. They taste better, are larger, double the protein, 25% of my daily fiber, and have only 40 extra calories. If I am at home, then I have Pure Protein bars. They are equivalent to The Gym's bars in protein content and all, but again have FIBER!

I also was taken to task about my steps. Apparently, it is impossible for a woman to walk that much in a day. Since I am on my feet walking all day at work, I just let them crab about it.

I had a great thought today. Since April 1st, I have lost 15.8 pounds! The last time I weighed this was in 2003 (and in 2006 when I had my wisdom teeth out, but that really does not count because I was on liquids for a week).

Calories: 1295
Steps: 13098
Exercise: 30 minutes on gym circuit, walking at work
