IHOP's national ‘Kids Eat Free’ dinner promotion

These days going out to dinner as a family can be expensive, and with overscheduled lives, family dinner time has dwindled, causing many families to opt for quick meals at home or on the go. For the entire month of April, families can break out of their routine without breaking the bank by heading to IHOP for its national ‘Kids Eat Free’ dinner promotion.

DETAILS:
•    Kids Eat Free EVERYDAY from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
•    Promotions runs from April 1 – April 30
•    Families who dine in at IHOP will receive one free Kid’s Meal with each adult entrée purchase
•    For more information please visit www.iHOP.com

FUN FACT:
•    Kids who eat most often with their parents are 40% more likely to say they get mainly A's and B's in school than kids who have two or fewer family dinners a week. (Time Magazine, “The Magic of the Family Meal,” 6/4/06)

Why the Disney Dining Program is popular: because kids eat free

If you are a family with kids and you’re on a budget, eating out can definitely be a problem. Kids just want to eat, and don’t necessarily have the concept down about eating within a budget. They just point at the macaroni-and-cheese, chicken fingers, fries (and other brown and tan foods without a vegetable in sight) and say “I want that!”

THIS JUST IN : there is such thing as a free lunch

THIS JUST IN : there is such thing as a free lunch. Providing you have an appetite for chocolate chip pancakes or chicken fingers shaped like dinosaurs.
Three years ago, Barry Yow and his wife, Julie, were debating where to go for dinner with their two children, age seven and nine. The Yows wanted to find a spot that offered a "Kids Eat Free" promotion. Stymied, the couple checked the Internet to see if there was a central registry, listing all restaurants of that ilk.

There wasn't. So they created one.

The Yows' website, www.MyKidsEatFree.com, charts hundreds of establishments across the United States where parents can save a few bucks while their children enjoy a meal on the house. Barry receives as many as 10 emails a day informing him about new specials.

"'Kids Eat Free' promos have doubled in the last year," he says, when reached at home in Greenboro, N.C. "With restaurants reporting a steady decline in visitors over the last 18 months, many are looking for new ways to bring families back."

Although deals are usually found at traditional, sit-down restaurants like Applebee's and TGI Fridays, Yow notes that fast-food giants like McDonald's are beginning to bite, too. "We just recently added 59 Taco Bell locations in the southeast (U.S.)," he says. (Like-themed websites are also popping up; besides the Yows' domain, you can also hunt for bargains at www.kidsmealdeals.com or www.kidseatfree.com.)

"There has been an increase in Canadians searching for 'Kids Eat Free' promotions," Barry says. "I have received numerous requests to add restaurants in Canada to our site, and we are planning to do just that in the next month or so."

Why wait? Armed with the Yellow Pages and a famished volunteer (this scribe's son, Jakob) we hit the streets, looking for gratis grub in our own backyard. Here's what we found...

Where: Pizza Hut, 10 Winnipeg locations.

Minor details: Children, 10 and under, get one free selection from the kids' menu, for every adult entrée purchased. Offer available all day Tuesdays.

Food for tot: Pizza (duh), chicken wings, pasta, mozzarella sticks or salad.

Six weeks ago, Pizza Hut introduced a "Kids Eat Free" promotion to coincide with the launch of its "Wing Street Wings," says Sandra Fyvie, general manager of the Pizza Hut at 3421 Portage Ave. (No doubt you've seen the omnipresent TV commercial -- the one where an unsuspecting horde chows down on wings, only to be astonished later when they discover they're from Pizza Hut.)

Although the deal is reserved for the junior set, Fyvie isn't checking ID at the door. "Omigosh, no. That hasn't been a problem; being that the children's meal is somewhat smaller, older kids don't want to order it anyways," she says.

Where: Perkins Restaurant and Bakery, six Winnipeg locations.

Minor details: Children 12 and under get one free selection from the kids' menu for every adult entrée purchased. Offer available Monday and Tuesday, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Food for tot: Burgers, pizza, hot dogs, chicken fingers, quesadillas or all-day breakfasts. Includes a bottomless beverage.

Perkins has been offering its front-of-the-week, "Kids Eat Free" promotion for four years, says Shaen Mason, manager of the Perkins location at Madison Square. "We've pretty much built our sales around it; kids bring their parents in on Monday or Tuesday, and the parents bring their kids back on the weekend."

Mason says his staff looks forward to the promo. "They have a lot of fun with it. Waiters and waitresses get in costume; we have one guy who dresses up like a Ninja Turtle -- it's all very kid-friendly."

Where: Denny's, 1750 Sargent Dr.

Minor details: Two children, 10 and under, get a free selection each from the kids' menu, for every adult entrée purchased. Offer available Tuesday and Saturday, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Food for tot: Sports-oriented kids' menu includes "softball pancakes," "spaghetti, set go," "cheesy @ the plate" and "pit stop pizza."

Denny's "Kids Eat Free" promotion has been a strong draw ever since the 24-hour dining spot opened for business on Louis Riel Day 2008, says general manager Mark Gurlevitch. "With the two-for-one deal, it works out really good for larger families; if Jon and Kate came here, for example, they'd only have to pay for four of their kids."

Where: AALTOS Garden Café at nine Canad Inns Destination Centres, including hotels in Brandon, Portage la Prairie and Grand Forks, N.D.

Minor details: Children 10 and under get a free selection from the kids' menu for every adult entrée purchased. Promotion also applies to AALTOS's nightly buffet. Offer available Thursdays, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Food for tot: Grilled cheese sandwiches (quartered), peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (shaped like farm animals) and "Pogo Dogs," to name three.

Did you know that a person who creates balloon sculptures is called a "twister?" Taras Sokoly, the chief executive officer of Canad Inns, says one of his company's current goals is to train all of its waiters and waitresses to become balloon artists. "Little things like that, along with kids eating for free, is all part of a broader picture," says Sokoly. "We've also got the Adventure Kids club, where members get invited to Canad Inns events, throughout the year.

"It's a way of turning a 30-minute meal into a 90-minute fun time for the whole family."

MyKidsEatFree.com to track Canadian restaurants

MyKidsEatFree.com announced today that it will start tracking restaurants in Canada that offers Kids Eat Free specials. Due to the increased number of requests from our neighbors in Canada to start tracking restaurants in their country, we decided that now would be a great time to start tracking them. The number of restaurants in the US offering Kids Eat Free specials has exploded in the past year while in Canada they have not. Or it may simply be that there is no central location where parents can go to find these specials as was the case in the US just a few years ago. When we started MyKidsEatFree.com in 2006, our major challenge was to locate restaurants that offered a Kids Eat Free special. That challenge now moves to Canada where we hope to build up our listings with the help of visitors to our site and a lot of research. Our primary focus remains on providing parents with a valuable resource for saving money.

Restaurants in the US are still seeing a declining number of customers. Primarily in the “Family with kids” group as parents cut back on going out. With the economy downturn this past year, parents have developed the habit of looking for value and savings in everything they do. Coupon clipping and Buy one get one free offers are on the raise. As the economy recovers, these new habits will stay in place as restaurants will not be in a hurry to discontinue these specials.

MyKidsEatFree.com currently tracks more than 5,000 restaurant locations that offer Kids Eat Free specials. We are dedicated to helping you stretch your dollar as far as possible. With the help of several friends and viewers like you, we continue to collect a list of Kid Friendly and Family Friendly restaurants that offer great value for your family.

Make sure you visit MyKidsEatFree.com and check out your area for Kids Eat Free specials.

CEO shares plans for reviving Boston Market

NRF SmartBrief | 09/30/2009

Boston Market CEO Lane Cardwell says the chain has "been in a financial coma for years," but he plans to change that by expanding the concept to include chilled food. "Folks only come to us when they want to eat right now," he said. "People don't like to bring hot food home and heat it up hours later." The company also is debuting a "Two Kids Eat Free" program. USA TODAY (09/29)

Q: What's the best way to get people to think of Boston Market?

A: You have to come up with big ideas to let people know you're out there. We're introducing a "Two Kids Eat Free" program. Sure, we're in it to help ourselves, but we're also helping others. A single parent with two kids can buy a meal for six bucks, and they get two kids' meals free. We may only break even on that, but it may be the only chance the family has to go out to eat that month. The only requirement is that you spend six bucks and bring both kids (14 and under) with you. This is a huge, untapped market. Some 31% of households with kids are single-parent households. Most kids-eat-free programs are not designed for them. They only give one free kids' meal for each adult-paid meal.

The kids are heading back to school in most areas of the country. This can be very stressful on both the kids and the parents. The summer’s laid back schedule is gone and replaced by early morning wakeup calls. In order to reduce the stress on the entire family, try going out tonight.

'Eat free' goes large
Restaurants expand events when they don't charge for children's meals
BY KEILANI BEST • FLORIDA TODAY • August 28, 2009

With fewer families going out to eat, restaurant managers are coming up with ways to lure them in when they do opt to dine out. One way is by expanding on the traditional concept of "kids eat free" nights. Some restaurant chains are heavily promoting such nights, and others are striving to make them events. Duffy's Sports Bar and Grill in Melbourne has a balloon artist, a kid's room, and a creative menu every Wednesday night. Kids have access to a PlayStation, Nintendo Wii, board games and five large, flat screen televisions tuned to the Cartoon Network.

The price for a kid's meal usually runs $4.99 at the restaurant, not including ice cream sundaes or chocolate cupcakes that come with a side of blue or red frosting. "We got a good number of parents that come in," said assistant general manager Ben Longanacre. Sonya and Doug DiSomma of Palm Bay usually take their daughter, Madison, 4, to Duffy's every Wednesday, and they say they take advantage of other area restaurants that offer similar deals. "She absolutely loves it; she loves the balloons," Sonya DiSomma said. "Anyplace that offers a kid's night, we're going to love that." Duffy's is just one example of a growing number of restaurants and major chains heavily marketing their free meals for kids.

Welcome to My Kids Eat Free.

Making ends meet while having a family can be a challenge. With the current state of our economy and the cost of gas, we find ourselves having to pinch a little harder. Luckily, more and more restaurants are now offering Kid's Nights with reduced or free meals for the kids. The trick is learning about these mostly unadvertised specials.
