I always thought my 4 year old daughter and my 6 year old son would go at it the most, but it's the 18 month old, my daughter's own creation, that has come back to bite her in the butt, literally. For the first year and a half of his life, he watched as she pushed, poked, and pulled from her older brother. He watched and learned and then took it to a higher level and today...he pulled a Brad Pitt.<br />
<br />
I don't mean the suave Brad Pitt in <i>Oceans Eleven</i>, or the sexy secret assassin Brad Pitt in <i>Mr and Mrs Smith</i>, well, after the moves I saw today, maybe some day. He was the no holds barred, I got you were I want you, I'm gonna win or get messed up in the process, blood is my friend and pain is inspiration Brad Pitt in <i>Fight Club</i>.<br />
<br />
It started over a mop, a plain old kitchen mop and it ended in my son grabbing on with one hand to the locked stove door handle while death gripping the mop, while my 4 year old, who is about 10 inches taller and 20 lbs heavier grabbed, with a blood curling scream at the other end. At one point, John laid on his back, wrapped his legs around the mop and hung on like a monkey to a branch that held the last stack of bananas in the world.<br />

And what did I do?<br />

Watched and snickered to myself.<br />
<br />
Of course, I made sure know one got hurt, but I let them duke it out. And in my head, over the screams and cries of desperation, the scratches and the pushes, I secretly wanted to get out my video camera and tape it to show my husband who missed this entire production while taking out the trash, or blur their faces and secretly post it to you tube. In my motherhood desperation, I laughed and thought, I remember these days, my sister and I used to fight like cats and dogs. And as I looked at my 18 month old son, giving my little princess tomboy a serious, and I repeat, serious run for her money, I thought these are the moments that build character, these are the things that get you to fight back and not take anyone's crap, even if it is from your 4 year old sister.<br />

The kids pulling me in every direction, my little one in and out of everything, on top of every open and empty table and chair and up the stairs once an open door or a gate, sets him free. And I have been having trouble finding the motivation. My mind is often revolved around what mess I have to clean up next, who needs to be dropped off, picked up and homework, laundry, dinner. As you parent out there know, the list goes on. So when a post I had written about a tea party my mom held for my Aunt, was picked up by <i><b><a href="http://emmaleateazine.presspublisher.us/">Emma Lea's Tea Zine</a>, </b></i>I was humbled and reminded why I started my blog in the first place. To express my thoughts, my feelings and to relate with others. One part of the introduction touched me specifically and reminded me, that whatever is going on, no matter how chaotic and how challenging motherhood and life, can sometimes be, we all find the way to push on, persevere and come out stronger then we had ever imagined. She perfectly wrote, "<i>Her story reminds me of the quote by Eleanor Roosevelt, "Women are like teabags. You never know how strong they are until you put them in hot water". </i><br />

And after seeing this video, who could not make this for their little girl, especially after, showing said little girl and witnessing their complete screams and begging over wanting this super cute cake for their birthday.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So after putting the kids to bed, armed with more icing then I could fathom in one had and a spatula in the other, I went to town. I layered, shaved, cut and refrigerated. refrigerated and refrigerated some more (that crumb problem when you have to cut and then icing a cake is a mess). I thought about making cupcakes, throwing these cakes in the trash, canceling the party, and driving over to my local favorite <a href="http://www.wegmans.com/">Wegman's</a> at 6 in the morning and begging them to make me their best cake with just hours until the party. I thought to myself over and over and over again, what had I gotten myself into? The woman in the video is so happy and serene, there is complete silence, no crying babies, no kids up and down the steps to check on your progress, taste cake batter or stick their finger in the icing. She makes it look so easy. I love to cook and bake but maybe this was beyond my patience level, or maybe it was the face that it was the end of the day, 1 crying baby with a double ear infection, 1 nosy 5 year old and 1 super excited and curious birthday girl later and my patience was at the end of it's wick. So 5 hours later, one amazing husband trip to the store to buy more icing,(yes, more icing) and more breakdowns then I care to admit,this is how my cakes turned out.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">My grand idea on Valentine's day was demolished, literally. I wanted to make individual Heart Pizzas with the kids for dinner, but they had other plans. Half way through, it was just me and my daughter, my son decided he'd rather watch Transformers and the 15 month old, well did what most 15 month olds would rather do, he went off to terrorize the cat. After the Pizzas were in the oven, I ran into the other room to get something and when I came back into the kitchen to what did my wandering eyes appear? Two little kids on my kitchen table covered in flour, from ear to ear.<br />
And well...everything with in a 20 ft radius got a nice dusting too.</div><br />

The kids love running around with Grandma and my dad hanging out with George watching sports and talking politics, he's like the son he never had. Last June, when I was about 4 months pregnant with John, as usual we all headed to my parents house to celebrate Father's Day. The weather was beautiful and my dad, instead of cooking up our usual chicken and sausage, decided to throw some nice cuts of steaks on the grill. After cooking them, we all settled down to our dinner in the traditional American way, adults in one room, kids and chicken nuggets in another and everyone in front of the tv, talking, alternating between rooms. My dad had dished his plate and settled down in the back room to watch some tv and dig in. </div>While we were still in the kitchen preparing our plates, we look up and my dad is staggering into the kitchen, his face turning a deep purple, holding his throat in the chocking position, muttering words that were barely understandable. <br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">I felt a sense of panic wash over me and I approached him trying to figure out what was going on. </div>As he got closer, barely unable to walk, let alone speak, I realized he was muttering the word Heimlich. <br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">My heart stopped. I started to panic and shouted, "Someone give him the Heimlich", as I searched for the phone about to call 911.</div><br />
<strong>My dad was choking on a piece of steak.</strong> <br />

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">My dad started turning blue, his wind pipe had become completely blocked. My husband, the resident RN in the family, calmly stood behind him, wrapped his arms around my father's 6'4 stature, took correct placement with his hands in fisted position and in what seemed like hours, firmly, precisely and calmly, administered 3 blows. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><strong>The first blow barley dislodging the stubborn piece of meat.</strong> <br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> <strong>The second moving it up his windpipe. </strong></div> <br />
<strong>The third expelling the piece of meat.</strong> <br />

The color immediately returned to my dad's face and he braced himself against the counter top as he caught his breath, inhaled and oxygen filled his lungs. I'm not sure if it was the hormones, the event that just took place or the reality of the situation, but I started to shake and couldn't stop crying. <br />
<br />
<strong>My husband had just saved my father's life</strong>. <br />
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><strong>Although this may seem like a regular choke and save situation, it is everything but.</strong> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">My father suffers from Congestive Heart Failure. Diagnosed about 14 years ago, he has been on a heart transplant list, hospitalized multiple times and just about knocking on death's door. He had already outlived his original "time-lined"diagnosis, his heart rebounding to the stronger of the heart failure levels. But in my father's quick thinking, he knew that if he had passed out and hadn't made it into the room, hadn't tried to sputter the words that ultimately saved his life,that because of his heart condition, we would not have assumed he was choking, we would have assumed it was his heart and called 911. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><strong>He wouldn't have made it</strong>.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">All the years of worry, by my father, my mother and his family, us wondering at times, if our father would make it another day or night and him wondering how he would just gather the energy to speak or attend his daughters sporting events, and be present in our lives. Years of his "roller coaster heart health. And in the last couple years, due in strong part, I believe, because of his optimistic attitude and his propensity to push on and live life, my father's heart had actually improved. And to think his fight for life, his fight to survive heart failure would have been lost against a piece of steak. </div><br />
After my father caught his breath, and emotionally thanked George for saving his life, he joked about the situation, joking that for saving his life, he would give George his first born, me. Then he went into the other room, sat down and finished his piece of steak. <br />
<br />
And my husband, who treated his extraordinary feat like another day at the hospital, a scheduled surgery, sat down and joined him.<br />
