People often ask me how do I stay happy all the time. The truth is that I don't think I'm happy all of the time, but I do know that whatever state of mind or state of being you are in is a choice. It's your choice. Happy, sad, angry, bubbly, confident, afraid, silly, loving, and melancholy, etc are all choices.

I admit that I do have a bubbly personality, but states of being are choices.

Dictionary.com defines "happy" as:

adjective, happier, happiest.

delighted, pleased, or glad, as over a particular thing: to be happy to see a person.

characterized by or indicative of pleasure, contentment, or joy: a happy mood; a happy frame of mind.

Romantic Love or Something Else?

Say you love me and put it in a love song.

I had a small "discussion" the other day with someone about the Erykah Badu song "Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip Hop)". We were both saying how much we like/love the song. Of course I love the song because I love Hip Hop (the hip hop she's singing about in the song of course). However my comrade thought it was a song about romantic love. When I told him what it was really about, he didn't believe me. Hmmm...

There are many love songs written and sung that a huge number of people mistake for romantic love songs. While driving home from work today, one of them played on my playlist, which prompted me to write this entry about love songs that have not a dern thang to do with romantic love. I guess another thing that prompted this is the realization that I have so much love in my life that is NOT romantic love and I am grateful for that love that I have from friends and family.

Another LOVE SONG that people get confused with romantic love is Brandy by The O'Jays. Y'all, they singing bout a dog!

Rihanna's Umbrella is about friendship pure and simple. I have friends like that and I am a friend like the song describes. Go have a listen and be the judge for yourself.

Self love is important, especially the self love that also lifts others up. When I was growing up, my mom always told me to think highly of myself because if I don't, nobody else will. Granddaddy used to say self preservation is the first law of nature.

I write this post to encourage you to love on yourself more. I'm not encouraging selfishness, but something entirely different. How can you love others if you first do not love yourself? The saying Charity(Love) begins at home means you must love you first in order to love others.

TELL THEM I DIED is a romantic adventure that doesn't conform to the usual romance novel genre in that the protagonists are all over fifty years of age, retired, and with discretionary time and funds to enjoy life, and online friends to share every minute. And unlike other romances, much of the action takes place on the internet on social networking sites. The story was inspired by the many people I came to know and love over many years on social networking sites. People who are not online a lot don't realize how real those long-distance relationships can be. Over all those years, my online friends have married, had children, divorced, and some have died. And then there is the travel element. My husband and I travel a lot, and we share our travel photos with our friends online. Several friends have suggested that I write a book about my travels. I think travelogs can be rather boring, but I decided to weave some of our adventures into the story.

The main characters of TELL THEM I DIED are Laura (Screen name: A1QTEE), owner/operator of Blaq-Kawfee.com, and the men in her life who come in an out of the social networking scene. There is Laura's number one confidante and forum moderator, Angela (Screen name: Angelplaits), and her husband "Bodine." The men in Laura's life, ex-fiance', Jackson (JackDaniels), Lester (TheGuy), Laura's son, Carlton, and her some-time boyfriend Harman all present challenges for Angela as she tries to find out what happened to her dear friend when she gets the news that Laura has died.

I hope you’ll take the time to check out TELL THEM I DIED and write a review at Amazon.com or on your blog. It's a light-hearted page-turner of a story, that my early reviewers have said they hated to end.

My tag line: When it comes to long-distance internet romances, sixty is the new seventeen.

Jackson hardly knew what day it was. He had been awake over twenty-four hours, and although he was tired, he knew he still would not sleep soundly. He showered and dressed so he would be ready for his morning trip to find Carlton. He set the clock for six a.m. and lay down on the bed fully clothed. At least he’d had a good meal at Bonita’s house. Now he could laugh at how ridiculous that scene had been.

Internet hoochie-mamas. Those girls were so tame online. I never would have guessed. And Stacey was married. Laura probably had them all figured out, but Angela was so naïve. What a set-up.

He slept for a few hours before the alarm rang. This time he drove his rental car and picked up a cup of black coffee on his way. The built-in GPS took him to Carlton’s place in a short time. Carlton lived in a small bungalow on a quiet street. Jackson parked down the block where he could see Carlton whenever he left. After Angela told him how he lied, he didn’t want to take a chance on being dodged.

The front door opened after Jackson had been waiting close to an hour. A young woman with a toddler emerged. Jackson recognized them as Carlton’s wife and baby. He had never met them, but had seen photos Laura had posted on the web. Jackson headed them off before they reached their car.

“Good Morning, Keisha. I’m so glad I caught you before you got away for the day.”

Keisha didn’t know this man, but she smiled and stopped since he called her name. “Good Morning.”

“We’ve never met, but I’m Jackson Gooding. I was Laura’s friend. I met Carlton, but I never met you. I would like to talk to Carlton, if you don’t mind. Is he in?”

“He goes to work around ten, so he’s not up yet. Why don’t you call him later?”

“I don’t have his number. Can you give it to me?” Jackson knew how to turn on the charm. He hoped Keisha would trust him enough to give him the number. She did. She gave him Carlton’s mobile number and work number.

“Thanks, Keisha. I know you working moms have to get going in the morning. I don’t want to make you late.” He helped her with getting the baby into his car seat, and held her car door while they said goodbye. He didn’t want her to know he wouldn’t leave until he saw Carlton.

Jackson settled into his car again. This time he allowed himself to nap until about nine. He thought by then Carlton would be up and getting dressed. When he rang the doorbell, he listened for movement inside the bungalow. He could hear a television and someone approaching the door. Jackson stepped back, expecting the door to open. He knew Carlton had to be on the other side of the door watching him through the peephole. When the door didn’t open, Jackson knocked, and said, “Carlton, it’s me. I know you’re in there.”

Carlton opened the door, looking down at his feet.

Jackson extended his hand to shake it. “Hey, man. I’m so sorry about your mom. When Angela told me, I took the first flight I could get.”

Carlton still stood in the doorway, not motioning for Jackson to come in.

“Can I come in? I know you have to go to work, so I won’t take too much of your time.” Carlton let him in, and led him into the kitchen, where Carlton had been eating a bowl of cereal.

“Tell me what happened. How did she die?” Jackson asked.

Me Bossy? Really?

So, Gail and I were talking this morning and she said I was just like my mother. Huh? Gail please. I admit I have qualities and characteristics like Ms Brenda, but I am NOT Ms Brenda. I do admit to being a tad bit bossy, but I don't think I go overboard with it. NOT saying my mom is bossy or goes overboard with it!

We decided to ask all of my friends if they think I'm bossy and on a scale of 1 to 100 how bossy they think I am. If you know me, please participate. If you think you know me you can vote too. Gail has a number in mind that she thinks people will tend to vote close to. I'm just curious to know how bossy yall really think I am.

I'm Really Digging Me

Digging You Baby.

Baby, don't you know that I'm digging you?

BFF: He said he was really digging a chick across town.

Me: Yeah, that's what he SAID. But I wanna know what his definition of "digging someone" is.

BFF: I guess he was really feeling her.

Me: Yes, with his fingers, hands, lips and other body parts.

BFF: You think so?

Me: I'm not so sure, but let me tell you what my experience when someone says he's "digging me" versus what I actually want to happen when they are really "digging me".

BFF: Ok, what's your experience with that term?

Me: Dude says he's "digging me" but he constantly looking for the next best thing. He actually told me he was constantly looking for the next best thing. If he was really digging me he would have realized that I was the next best thing.

BFF: You can't be open to receive a man like that.

Me: Exactly.

BFF: Oh, I get it. He said he was digging me, but he was calling me bad names and using profanity towards me. I cannot take someone treating me badly. He had to go. I need someone to speak positive words to me.

Me: He said he was digging me but he had a toddler's temper tantrum when I didn't answer the phone on the first two rings. Then when I called him back, he accused me of horrible stuff I didn't even do. I want him to respect my time and be confident in himself.

BFF: I think he got you confused with his other woman.

Me: Or he was just confused period.

BFF: He said he was digging me, but he wanted me to be his chick on the side.
Me: That's NOT digging you dear.

BFF: I know. I'm more than enough woman for one man. I'm not sharing and I refuse to take seconds or leftovers.

Me: I got one. He said he was digging me, but he married someone else a few days later.

BFF: What they said and what they did were very contradictory.

Me: Exactly. When someone tells me they are digging me, I expect to see it with their actions. If they are digging me, they treat me with respect and kindness. They use positive words to uplift and encourage. They realize that I am not that other woman. They do not confuse one woman with all women.
BFF: Some of them are not open to receive good treatment. They are so guarded they don't trust anybody. It's a vicious cycle.

Me: Because some other woman wronged them, they come at us all crazy like we are that woman or we are gonna wrong them. That's not necessarily true. Granted we are guarded too, but we don't start out with the bad treatment. I believe since they are charged with protecting us and making us feel safe, if they want that love and companionship they claim to want, they should approach us from a position of vulnerability. Women are more than willing to respond in kind and positively to a man who starts out with kindness, honesty and respect. My experience with that term "digging" is plain and simple. That only meant he wanted what he wanted at that time.

BFF: What did he want?

Me: He wanted to either own me, possess me or just have me as toy. I am not a toy. I can be a really good friend when I'm treated right.

BFF: Wow. Women want to love, nurture and be loved.

Be open about who you really are and what you really want. If you don't know, then find out. Dig a little deeper into who you really are. Otherwise you just look like a dog just digging...

What if your 17 year old went to the store and someone followed your child home with the intentions of hurting him or her?
What if your 17 year old was armed with Skittles and a can of tea and someone accused him or her of being up to no good?
What if your 17 year old screamed so loudly and fervently for his or her life that neighbors heard the pleas and called 911?
What if the person who stalked your 17 year old was told by authorities to leave your child alone, but this person disobeyed said instructions from the authorities?
What if someone shot your 17 year old in cold blood and no arrest was made?
What if the public outcry for justice for your 17 year old went ignored by the local authorities?
What if American citizens asked for an arrest for the murder of your child, and no arrest has been made?
What would you do if it were your child?

I’ve been doing a great job at listening to my gut instincts. It works everytime. My instincts have never failed me. So thankful for that. That’s all I have to say about that for now.

I Have a Headache

I wrote this back in January of 2008. Thank goodness I'll never have an Aunt Flow issue again. :-)

"A headache (cephalalgia in medical terminology) is a condition of pain in the head; sometimes neck or upper back pain may also be interpreted as a headache. It ranks amongst the most common local pain complaints.
The vast majority of headaches are benign and self-limiting. Common causes are tension, migraine, eye strain, dehydration, low blood sugar, and sinusitis. Much rarer are headaches due to life-threatening conditions such as meningitis, encephalitis, cerebral aneurysms, extremely high blood pressure, and brain tumors. When the headache occurs in conjunction with a head injury the cause is usually quite evident. A large percentage of headaches among females are caused by ever-fluctuating estrogen during menstrual years. This can occur prior to, during or even midcycle menstruation."
I guess that explains it. I usually get one headache a month about 2-3 hours before my cycle. However, this month I did not receive the usual headache post card from Auntie Flow.
So, I am at the end of my visit from Aunt Flow. Yesterday my boss took me to lunch at Very's Philly Food. I had a Philly Cheese Steak Hoagie. As soon I finished that thing, I got a headache. I STILL have the headache. I am trying to ward it off with a banana.

I also found this article about menstrual headaches. I have found that when I exercise, eat right, get the proper amount of sleep, and receive all the good lovin, my PMS symptoms are little to none. I have not been sleeping well this week. I have found myself waking up between 4 am and 4:30 am for the past 5 days. Since Aunt Flow came to town. Man, Aunt Flow is a pain!
During my research of menstrual headaches treatment and prevention, I found an article at www.eheadachehelp.com. Unfortunately that article was not much help since I am allergic to aspirin.
Well, the headache is subsiding. The banana may have helped.
Now I am off to research some Feng Shui.

Birthday Weekend 2012

The birthday weekend started out pretty uneventful.

I took Friday off to go play with my girlfriends at Career Conference in Duluth GA.

We ate lunch at Chipotle on Friday and ALL of us got ill. UGH.

Saturday's lunch was a nice linen affair.

Sunday morning was really NICE. I slept in, didn't go to church, didn't watch tv. Went outside for some air and found this iris in the backyard. I thought the dog dug up all my bulbs I planted. Obviously she missed about 3 of them. Yay AGAIN! I thought it was a lovely sight after that storm on Saturday. A sweet birthday present to wake up to.

Sunday I had to get boys from their dad. I went to Christina's to get my gift & a glass of merlot. Company with friends you love is always a treat. I had some birthday cake there and enjoyed the girls.

Sunday night my youngest brother and his wife came over with lilies and a birthday cake. How sweet.

I didn't party this year like I did last year, but this birthday was so sweet to me. I felt loved, special and extremely blessed.

So grateful for March 25, 2012.

Hearing your doctor tell you that you have a rare form of deadly cancer such as mesothelioma and that you will now be required to undergo mesothelioma treatment is a difficult pill to swallow. Finding out you have cancer is not something you ever dreamed would happen to you; it happens to other people but you never once thought you would be the recipient of this news. Unfortunately, it happens all too often. The good news is that many cancer survivors will attest to the fact that their cancer diagnosis, as horrible as it was, was a life changing day for them. Becoming a cancer patient forced them to make lifestyle changes that forever positively changed their lives during the course of their diagnosis, their treatment and now their recovery. If you have been considering making a lifestyle change but have yet to make the change, there is no time like the present to do so.

The National Cancer Institute offers information for cancer patients about the benefits of physical fitness and cancer; exercising and becoming physically fit while undergoing cancer treatments is a life changing action that won’t cure you of cancer, but it will make you healthier. The main reason why doctors recommend physical fitness for everyone – not just cancer patients – is because it is good for your body, mind and soul. Your body will never look better than it will once you start exercising regularly. In addition, your body will never feel better than when you start exercising; and neither will your mind and soul. Exercise promotes positive hormones in your body. Stress promotes negative hormones. The stress of cancer and the treatment required to fight your cancer produces so much negative hormones that it wreaks havoc on your immune system, which needs to be strong to help deal with cancer treatments and the disease itself.

Exercising produces hormones that fight the bad hormones caused by stress and improves your immune system. Since your immune system is what fights infections and illness, this is imperative to fighting cancer. Your mind will feel better after exercising because of the positive hormones, which increase your mood and your quality of life. Quality of life is important to cancer patients because the treatments often make a quality life difficult to live. In short, exercising not only makes you look better but it will make you feel better both inside and out.

Your doctor will be pleased to know you are adapting a healthier lifestyle with cancer. He will help you determine what activities are good for you while undergoing cancer treatments, such as walking, biking and swimming. Remember, treatment takes a lot out of you and you may not feel able to exercise every day, but as often as you can is just as good.
