Batteries are Important to Us

Now that we depend heavily on mobile phones, batteries are more important than ever. I am still attached to phones that provide removable batteries. Batteries tend to die first and when I replace them, the phone is still working fine. Except when I can’t find replacement batteries.

Telcos Launch Mobile Data Plans For Data Hungry Consumers

I can finally do a comparison for the mobile data now that Singtel has joined in the foray of giving unlimited data usage. In order to have that unlimited data (local only), one has to pay for the price. So far, I find that at first glance, M1 gives the best value for money. Just look at the mySim plans. They have modified the plans, hence, the different superlatives each time. I just renewed mySim 20 to the 12 months contract. 12 months can just fly by.

My initial impulse was to just use the 12 months mySim 98 plan. I mean, after comparing it with Starhub and Singtel, this was the best plan of them all. $98 per month! I think it exludes the GST though.

The 2-year contract plans have gone up in terms of prices. From $28 per month, it’s now $48 per month for only 3GB of 4G data. Seriously, what is wrong? The phone prices have gone up too!

I’m cancelling the HomeHub Go plans once the contract ends next year (it feels long right now). This Sim Only plan is now more attractive, never mind that buying phones can be expensive. There are cheaper phone options these days.

Singtel plans don’t look any much better. Paying for Combo 3 costs an arm and leg. I better up my salary or I won’t be able to afford such phone plans just for the unlimited data.

Now that I have the tables, I did a calculation on my monthly data usage and it has not hit more than 3GB monthly. So, why do I want those unlimited data plans then? I want value for money, I guess. Who doesn’t?

Google’s Mind Boggling Array of Products and Services

I have been using Gmail for quite some time ever since my Mail2World email got hacked. So far, I have been using mostly Google Docs for writing and keeping track of job applications that I’ve submitted. Functionality wise, Google Docs is for the basic usage of data entry but I believe there is more than just data entry since I haven’t really gone in depth.

So, there I was sitting there and clicked on Even more from Google and boom! The mind boggling array of services that Google has. I am floored and found Project Fi quite interesting. It’s based in US and the cost is most likely in USD. The idea is to buy the basic and data plans from Project Fi, provided you own either Pixel or Nexus phones as these are the only phones that are Fi-ready. Project Fi will roll over the unused data credit to the next month, thus, resulting in a reduced expenditure for next month. Singapore is Project Fi ready but you still need to buy Pixel or Nexus phones in order to use. Travelling with Project Fi is not a problem because the payment is still the same and no roaming charges are incurred, at least from what I read or understood so far.

The next service that I tried out was Google News. This section contains all the news from the world in their native languages too. I can even build a list of interest to show me what news that I want to read. There is also Google Scholar that will link you to scholar related sites. I tried out one link and if you want use the excerpt of the article, you can get a quotation and decide if you want to use that article for your thesis. I haven’t tried it out in full since I have no thesis to write. However, I believe it is useful for research purposes and of course, writers who want more knowledge on certain topics that they are going to write about, will find this a great place to start with.

I won’t forget about Sites since I used it for a short while at a previous workplace. Sites allow you to build a website without coding knowledge. My coding knowledge has since eluded me for far too long. Not that I miss it terribly. Sites is great for sharing information with others by using, what else, Google related products. Think of it as an informal place that GitHub is known for. Or Wikipedia.

For Business and Developers, Google provides another list for using. I’m just mind blown at how many services are provided and will more be rolled out over time.

What I would give for is the unlimited storage given when I use Google phones like Pixel and Nexus. Although, there are other ways to get unlimited storage, such as synchronizing the photos to Google Photos at high quality instead of original. Now, on to trying out those services.

iStudio iPad Pro and MacBook Pro Sale

So there I was at the entrance of iStudio the other day and the poster stated that the prices of the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro are slashed. I was so excited and I shared with my friend about it. The price starts from S$960 for 9.7in iPad Pro. My guess is that it’s the old version since it’s no longer 9.7in on the Apple website. Nevertheless, the deal is great, right?

So, I decided to check the iStudio website and my antivirus declared that there is malware involved in the site. I cannot even check anything out. Bummer. In the end, I have decided to shelf the purchase of a new iPad for now. The new keynote is coming up on 12 Sep 2017 anyway. The prices are for clearing the stocks, I believe.

I’m starting to think that it should be better to just buy from Apple website since I’m not getting the cellular version anyway.

Having developed a few databases and web applications, my initial testing methods were at best, pathetic without regards to how users would key in their inputs. Hence, the UAT that was done with the users the first time came back with bugs. The assumption that users would not know intuitively how to key in the inputs and I spent days and man hours trying to rectify within the given time frame. Thus, I find that learning how to conduct a testing before passing to the UAT phase is important.

Learning Learning Mindsets & Skills of humans is truly an important task. Understanding human behaviour and mindsets does help in the backend programming to prevent the programme from freezing.

Now, Six Sigma Tools for Improve and Control has been around for years and it is always useful to know how to use the tools.

Now, by using Machine Learning for Data Analysis, this will help to reduce bugs.

Certainly by learning how to Evaluating User Interfaces, we help the users to navigate the app or software much more easily.

The Fight for Data Hungry Customers

I have been using my Starhub mobile line the expensive way. However, I’m stuck in a contract that is due to end only next year. Hence, I can’t switch to another plan that would cut my expenses by half. That is a lot of money involved. Paying for SGD50 worth of 12GB mobile data is a huge amount. Thus, I want to sever ties with the HomeHub Go that is eating a huge hole in the pocket.

2018 cannot come fast enough. The recent fight from the telcos is about providing mobile data for us, the consumers, to use. Starhub came out with unlimited weekend data. So, M1 came out with their mySim plans (no contract and 12 months contract) for data hungry consumers too. The unlimited data for the highest plan would be during the promotion period that ended on 3 Sept 2017.

Personally, I have no idea if I would ever hit more than 15GB per month since I have always been monitoring my data and connecting to WiFi at home, that’s what you get for paying so much money to fibre broadband and unlimited usage for 1GB speed. Hence, I considered jumping ship to a telco that can give me better value for money for my data plans.

So, let’s see what next year will bring since Comex show tend to have promotions and what the new telco will bring.

Internet of Things IoT is Getting Popular

It’s amazing how one can feel out of place when not keeping up to date with the internet. The trend now is Internet of Things. Seriously, this sort of term exist? I didn’t know that until I had to pick up courses.

I would surely want to take up this Internet of Things: Multimedia Technologies as a start.

I would also want to understand a little more with this Software Architecture for the Internet of Things. A good way to understand architecture.

Obviously, there is a need for using Cybersecurity and the Internet of Things. One cannot simply just surf online without security.

For any business, you will need to know this Cybersecurity: Developing a Program for Your Business. A business need to have profit and having the knowledge on how to keep your business security is the first step.

In addition, validition is also important. System Validation: Automata and behavioural equivalences is a good start. Validate your business.

So, which course would you start with to increase your knowledge with Internet of Things (IoT)? By the way, secure your passwords and ensure what your account is kept secure with LastPass. Your credit card numbers are with Coursera and you don’t want your bills to shoot through the roof with unknown purchases.

Singapore Is Going Cashless for Hawkers

Surely I have not read wrongly, you mean there will be another way to use e-payments? Is Nets, PayWave, NetsFlash Pay, EZLink, Android Pay, Apple Pay and many other ways to pay not enough? We need another e-payment system? You mean all those that are now in place are not secure? Seriously? How many payment systems do we need?

We don’t really have an easy way to allow tourists to pay with all those payment methods. Each shop uses their own preferred payment methods and some use cash because all those systems take up space at the counter. I do want to use PayLah! But not all shops have the QR codes in place. Since almost everyone has an EZLink card, why can’t we use that so that tourists can use it too?

Why can’t we have just one payment system that doesn’t trouble tourists? I have never understood the need for the 1001 ways for e-payments. Someone please explain.

Time to Update Passwords

I have long since delayed for many years, the horrors, to change my password to a much stronger one. Yes, thanks to a certain person who actually now regrets telling us to set passwords that are difficult to guess. As in a mixture of symbols, small and capital letters and numbers. When we have been taught words, setting passwords is never a human’s nature to recall passwords that are meaningless. Even a mnemonic can be forgotten easily. We certainly can’t blame him for his initial attempts at making the logins more secure since it was in the 1980s where computers were much slower at breaking down login pages.

So, I have resorted to LastPass since my instagram was hacked. An excellent service, I must say. I have since been changing my passwords, especially for my emails, god knows what happened the last time I set an email via Mail2World and it got hacked. That account is now no longer able to send out emails and I have given up on using it for “looking for job” email account purposes. I have way too many email accounts too. It’s going to take me some time to get all of my accounts settled and depending on LastPass to help me login from now on.

What is so easy about using LastPass is that I can use Chrome and Firefox extensions, now, this is provided you have control over the installation part, obviously at work, you cannot install anything anyhow. Thus, I’m using this at home. There are definitely places where the workplace has disconnected from the internet. In this case, LastPass has also activated an offline access by default, cool, ain’t it?

The app version allows you to let LastPass generate a strong password that you will never in your life remember it anyway and set it as your new password. However, password fields in apps disable pasting anything, so, I had to resort to using the web-based version to complete all my settings first. There is a way around it when using the app that I have not explored.

Now, excuse me while I continue making changes to the rest of my accounts for updating the password. Here’s a free 30 days Premium usage of LastPass on me. You can still use it for the free version and it still works as well.
