Let Your Money Work For You

I started blogging on May 2011. :) This month is my blog's 1st year anniversary. I am so happy that my cousin introduced me to the world of blogging because it gave me an outlet.

Writing down my thoughts and emotions helps me relax. While photography releases all the tensions and pressures away..

Having been exposed to the world of blogging, I've met bloggers in person and online. I love to read their travel stories and experiences. And one thing that keeps coming up is the issue on earning while travelling.

Now, I am not a tech savvy gal. :) I may be some kind of a geek , I think. But I don't think I will be able to earn online like the other travel bloggers do while travelling. I just find that soooo cool. So hat's off ako to all the bloggers out there who left their works behind so they can pursue their passion in travelling.

I cannot do what they are doing now. :) But I am slowly but surely trying to ease my way off the business. No don't get me wrong.. I am not going to close our business. Not gonna happen! Thank God.

So what am I talking about?

The past years, my husband and I have been investing in properties. Every chance and opportunity we get, we buy. You know why? Because real estate appreciates. Specially land.

The prices may be low today but it's not gonna stay like that forever. In Davao and Samal Island, there has been at least 10-20% increase in the last 2 years. So the value of your investment, (based on the present trend) will double in 5 to 10 years. And I am talking of conservative growth. Davao, like I said, is booming. So there is a demand for commercial lots these days. If one has invested years ago, there might be a chance for it to get rented or sold at double/triple the price now.

What I am saying is - let your money work for you!

Never let it sleep in the bank.

You get 3.5% - 5% interest per annum/ year for a P1M time deposit. While you can get at least 10% increase on the real estate value per year. Duh, that's a no brainer right? If you know how to handle your money right, you get to earn more than double of your investment in five year's time. I did that. So no one can tell me that it's not true. It is possible.

I used to be a currency trader. But the risk is just too high. So I will never recommend that to anybody again. Yes, it earns a lot. But you lose fast too. That's why it's called calculated gambling.

Stock Market? Yep, I would do that. But only on a long term basis. For Filipinos, think of Jollibee , Ayala Land, Inc. etc.

But let me reiterate, there is money in Real Estate. Invest . Let it sleep. Then sell...

While you're busy travelling and spending money, of course. Your investment is working and earning for you.

And I'm not talking about a measly amount too...

So think smart.

One. Invest. Invest. Invest. In Real Estate if you can.

Two. Only borrow when you know for sure that the money you borrowed will earn more than the interest you are paying. IF NOT, THEN RUN... :)

Err.. it goes without saying not to borrow to buy an expensive cellphone, ipad, etc.

I listened to a cooperative seminar a few months ago. Something the speaker said stuck in my mind. They have a travel loan for the members.

I was thinking, who would borrow to travel? I mean seriously?

If you can't afford to travel then stay put! With the economy going down all over the world, stick to the money you have. Do not borrow unnecessarily..

My husband often tells me that I am "kuripot". To my non-filipino readers, it means "stingy". I am thinking, I am not. Really. I just know what I need and what I want. If I need something, that's when I buy. If it's something I just want and can live without, then I don't. Simple. Right?

Yes, I maybe working too hard now. But in between, I stop and go to places like Hagimit Falls. Or the beach. I stop and write. To relax.

But my long term goal is to harvest what we planted over the years. Then, I can afford to travel the whole world without working. :)

This is all in God's hands. So I am asking for his continued blessings. I am praying for you too.. Maybe someday we will meet around the globe huh?! :)

Soothing One's Soul at Hagimit Falls

A friend of mine called up and said that she's entertaining a friend from the US who wants to see Hagimit Falls in Samal Island. She asked if John and I would like to join them.

I said, perfect! :) I gladly welcome the short break because if you remember, I've been sick the past weeks. John got my flu too. And we couldn't really rest because we had work to do.

We met up near the ferry boat port past 2 pm. My friends came from Costa Marina, another beautiful beach resort in Limao, Penaplata. While John and I came from our farm in Kinawitnon.

The trip took about 15 mins on a concrete national highway. After paying the entrance fee of P40.00 , off we went to the waterfalls.

When we reached the water, John took off his shoes. :) And waded his feet in the river.

While Ruby and I continued onwards. We crossed the bridge and reached this small cascade. I could hear Ruby shreiking, oh my god... I didn't know Hagimit is this beautiful. :)

I proudly said yep! :)

And I'm glad I became the tour guide that day. It was my way of saying thank you to Samal island for giving me such wonderful memories. And of course, our main business is here.

I told them that it's best to visit Hagimit Falls on a weekday because it's not filled with people. Don't get me wrong, I am happy that tourism is booming in Samal. But when you want to commune with nature, it is best if it's quiet so you can hear the soothing sound of the waterfalls. Feel the soft touch of the breeze as it gently releases the tiredness of your body and soul.

He.he.. emo moment eto. :) But it's true. For me, at least...

I saw John watching the other pool of water. So I clicked my camera for a shot as I called his name. He said that he likes the milky blue color of Hagimit. And yeah, I never thought of it before as that.. milky blue. We all wondered why. I said maybe it's because of the limestone underneath? haha..

Whatever it is we all fell inlove with Hagimit, that's for sure....

Just looking at it makes me realize how blessed we all are.. This is a free gift from God.

As we continued on, Ruby and I found this spot. Vincent, her friend took this photo of her as she touched the clear water.

We immediately took off our shoes , sat at the river bank and let the water soak our feet. We were laughing because we don't know if the dirt in our clothes can still be cleaned. But we didn't mind, the place is so beautiful , you'd be so dense if you won't love every bit of it...

Before leaving, I took these photos of Hagimit in the dark. The place is covered with bamboos, coconuts, huge trees and all that. I've always thought that it would be scary to stay there in the dark, but I was wrong...

In fact it was relaxing. I could hear the crickets. :) And the birds singing..

As we headed back to the parking space, I saw some people who were staying there overnight. Each cottage was provided with a torch. So authentic right? :) Going back to the basic, literally...

We left past 6pm. Going up the stairs in the dark was difficult but we didn't mind.

And no, it's not dangerous here. :) When you're in Davao or Samal Island, you're safe. So you don't worry of safety issues, etc.

So if your plan is to commune with nature, I suggest that you head towards Hagimit Falls this summer. Oh my god.. I can still remember the cool water gently rocking my feet and healing me. Life is so busy and our minds are so filled with all the clutters in the world.

But at the end of the day, it's how you find time to be silent and listen to your heart and to what the universe is telling you. It makes it all the more memorable if it's shared with the people that matters to you...

In my case, I was lucky enough to have shared this beautiful moment with my husband and friends...I shrieked when I fell .. haha.. John worriedly ran towards me. But I told him I was fine and so is my camera. hahaha... Ruby helped me get up while Vincent took a picture of me. That was really funny.

All in all, it was a moment to remember. Hagimit was a witness to our shared happiness and joy...

Mother's Day Sunset Cruise

On our way to Samal Island yesterday, I noticed the new advertisement at the ferry port. :)

The Venue Party Boat is hosting a Mother's Day Sunset Cruise! Sweet right? I texted my sister, Pearlie , and asked if we should take mama to this cruise. She said that mama would like to be in the beach, rather than sailing. Ok, so the sunset cruise is out for our mom.

Karlo's Gourmet And Coffee

We had a very long day yesterday. So when we passed through Shrine Hills in Matina going home, John and I decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Jack's Ridge.

Upon parking, we saw Karlo's Gourmet. So John and I went there instead, thinking that we always go to Taclobo restaurant anyway. :)

The airconditioned area looks nice. But we preferred to sit at the verandah where we could feel the hill's fresh air. Plus of course, you get to see a fantastic view of Davao Gulf!

It was a little bit dark yesterday but the panoramic vista infront of me still stood out despite its cloudiness.

THE FOOD:

Hamburger with fried potatoes.. Looks yummy right? :)

Pork Steak with garlic rice. Heaven... hehe

HISTORY LESSONS:

I've always loved Jack's Ridge. It's relaxing to dine there with the view and the fresh air. But Karlo's Gourmet and Coffee , was impressive. The service was fast and good.

Precious Garden Restaurant (Samal Island)

I'm glad to be blogging once again. :)

I was (and still am) sick ,for about a week now due to viral infection. I was down with flu, cough and cold for a couple of days. Not a very nice reason to stay put huh! But I was happy, all the same. I slept most time and did nothing when I'm awake. So I was able to rest...

But we had to go to Samal today though to look at properties. We sold our residential lots last month so we had to scout for some new ones as its replacement.

That's what led us to Precious Garden Resort and Restaurant in Samal. I found the billboard near the ferry port. So I recorded their number in my phonebook. When you're in Samal, you will mostly find carenderias. In other words, it's a welcome surprise to find out that there's a new restaurant that offers Filipino, Western and Italian food.

The resort is about 10 minutes away from Babak proper, on a rough road. (Welcome to Samal huh? lol) I really wish that the local government would prioritize concreting their roads. And if not, just maintain it.. Tsk.. tsk..

Moving on, John and I had 30 minutes to spare. So I was really glad when the waitress said that our order will only take 15-20 mins. :)

John 's order. He said that my beer-battered fish and fries were better though... :) Ehem.. ha ha

I remember John saying: " it disturbs me when you do that" , referring to the fact that I was taking pictures of our food. hehe.. I commented " sorry, it's for the blog"...

So that's what happens when you're married to a blogger. Forget about privacy huh! lol I'm just glad that my husband is such a cool guy. :)

I ordered calamares. (That's battered squid, to my non-filipino readers. ) I like its taste.. :) For Php180.00 pesos, I thought it's cheap.

Their restaurant was surrounded with huge trees. So even at 12:30 noontime, we didn't feel the heat. It was kinda loud though because there was a wedding reception at the resort. But otherwise, resting and eating there would be great.

I was really impressed by their bathroom. It was squeaky clean! I just had to mention that because I think having a very clean bathroom in a restaurant is a must. Don't you?

I was told that their pizza is great. But since we didn't have much time to spare, we vowed to try it next time. :)

After lunch, John and I proceeded to our appointments. I will not bore you with that. :) But I'll share with you some interesting photos I took.

This rest house was located near the property we checked. I just like its design. :) It's roof is made of tin and wood trusses. The walls and the porch are made of bamboo materials. The stealth like posts are made of logs. I just found that really beautiful. :)

Ahh.. this carabao scared the hell out of me! haha.. I thought it was going to hit us. But I guess it got more scared of us when we disturbed his peace. LOL

Introspect

I'm usually a happy person. :) But as I write this, I'm coming from a very dark place. Figuratively speaking, that is..

Two of the people close to me have cancer. :(

One - she's the President of the Real Estate Association where I am a Board Member of. She's like a mother to me so I feel really sad to hear that her breast cancer has gone to her lungs already. Yes, it's not good. But she's still fighting. And now, she's in Manila for more medication.

And then the other one is my sister's mother inlaw. She was in the hospital for a few days. But the doctors had to send her home because there's nothing they can do anymore. In other words, she is gonna die in the next few days. I just realized that when you have breast cancer and your whole body swells, it means that it's bad news. That once the swelling subsides, then comes death.

I feel terrible. And I don't know what to say.

Except that I have more realizations. That life is fleeting. And that in the end, nothing matters.

I asked my husband the other day, why are we working so hard? Why indeed, when it's just the two of us. We have no children to leave everything behind to when our time comes. I guess, all our properties will be left to our nephews and nieces. :)

I realized that we have to slow down. And spend more time on things and people that matter. Work if we must. But it shouldn't be the most important thing in our life. How sad, right?

But then again, we're both workaholic. So slowing down isn't easy. I don't know if this happened to you. Too much holiday feels like I'm ready to crawl on the walls. :) So yep, that's not an easy task for us.

Okay, so I'll try to go to sleep. :) Maybe I'll feel better when I wake up...

Samal Island (Day 3)

Saturday, 7 April 2012:

The sun shone brightly today....

Infact, it's orange color made a beautiful contrast to the dark sea. And yes you're right, I woke up really early again. :)

This is our third day at the resort. I'm glad that even with the rain last night, we all slept very well... I laid down in our make shift bed and the next thing I knew, there's daylight already. :)

Some of our guests and two of my staff are leaving today, so everyone rose up early too. The mall , where our display booth is , will open today. Therefore Amor and Tadeo, our booth incharge, had to leave. Do you know that the malls only close on Good Friday? And that means, if you're a tenant, you're open 364 days / a year too. :) Pretty tiring huh? But then again, that's business.

After breakfast, John and I brought everyone who's going home, to Babak, the district where the ferry port is. We went the other way this time, passing through the barangays of Tagpopongan and Balet. The trip was only 19.2kms. But it took us 1 hr and 30 minutes to reach Babak because of the terrible road. The holes on the road are so deep in some part, I got scared it would rip out the bottom part of our Nissan van.

It seemed to me like the local government has forgotten this side of the island. I mean, seriously. The road didn't look like it's been cleared or bulldozed for years! So I don't know what is going on... Samal is a tourist spot. And I've seen a lot of resorts in Tagpopongan and Balet. So I don't understand why the roads haven't been repaired or maintained? That's just too bad... And so sad. The rainy season will make it worst. I pity the constituents living there. :(

The view is fantastic! :) But the road sucks... Please LGU of Samal, fix the road of Balet and Tagpopongan. It's such a waste if tourists opt not to visit this place because of the road condition...

After taking Amor to the bus station and the rest to Hagimit Falls, John and I stopped at Central Warehouse Club in Penaplata to purchase cooking oil, softdrinks and bottled water. And then off we went to the resort... This time, we used the Tagbitan-ag route. The drive is shorter (12kms = 30 mins). The road is also rough but this can be considered well-maintained compared to the Balet-Tagpopongan route.

We arrived at the resort around lunchtime. John had pork chop sandwich. While I mostly ate driedfish (Lagao) sauteed in garlic, onion and a lot of tomatoes. That, really was a very good lunch for me. I seldom have this chance to eat driedfish because John can't stand the smell. But at the resort, our dining area has a wide open space with free flowing breeze. So it didn't bother John at all. :)

I fell asleep in the hammock today! :) How could I not, the place was so peaceful and the sea breeze was amazing... The place is covered with big trees so there's shade all around. Perfect for relaxation, indeed!

Ahh... life is hard. Very hard, indeed.... :)

I prepared hamburger for dinner for all of us. While, Dan and the rest of the cooking team (Boyet, Manong Osting, Jade, Orly and Dave) grilled the remaining pork butterfly I bought. The kids loved my hamburger. haha.. Marco my nephew, said that it's better than McDonald's. hehe.. I said, of course. Ours doesn't have a commercialized burger patty eh... :)

It's our last night at the resort. Everyone felt sad. This beach life is so wonderful I could do this for the rest of my life. :) My other nephew Blaire tried his best (he's a special child) to tell me that he wants me to build a resort and let him be the caretaker. hehe.. I said, ok. Let's ask God to grant that prayer...

I wonder what Blaire was thinking? :)

Samal Island - Day 2

Friday, 6 April 2012:

I woke up to the sound of the birds chirping... I thought I was just dreaming, then I remembered that I was still in Samal Island. :)

Last night wasn't a very comfortable one. Remember when I said previously that we were told the resort can accomodate 25 people? 6-8 people per room and the rest in a dormitory? :) LOL. I chose to laugh over those words... Let me explain.

The cottage has a small but open living room. You go up 3 steps and that's where the 2 bedrooms were. One bedroom is good for 2-3 people. The 2nd bedroom can accomodate 2 people also. But with a mattress on the floor , can sleep a total of 5. And there were 25 of us. :)

The dormitory turned out to be the pavillion. With a mattress of Php50.00 / each, that's your bed for the night. Imagine, John's reaction. haha.. If you can only see his face....

It's a good thing we brought 2 tents with us. Our male helpers said they'll sleep in the tent. Then we rented 3 more tents from the resort (at Php250.00 each) . Theirs were big tents so it accomodated 3 to 4 people each.

Pearlie and mama with the kids slept in the 1st bedroom. While Grace and Anika slept in the other bedroom. Amor and Janice slept in the mattress on the floor of the 2nd bedroom also. They slept well because those have aircon units.

John and I slept in the van. haha.. You know, for the 1st time, I was so glad that we have a Hyundai Starex van. John rearranged the chairs into a "queensize -like" bed. With a mattress on top of it, problem solved. The seats of the starex are so comfortable. So when it was adjusted into a bed, we were able to sleep somehow.

I kept on waking up though because with the backdoor and the main door open, I was scared that an "aswang" might hover over us, specially with the balete tree on top of the mountain across the resort which I can see clearly from the van window everytime I open my eyes. hahaha... I know I am crazy!

So that's how I ended waking up with the birds singing. With that amazing sound, my morning started beautifully once again... You know, looking at the bright side of things is always wonderful. I could gripe the whole time or choose to enjoy what the rest of the place has to offer. And I chose the latter. I am thinking, I could be somewhere else having the worst time of my life. But God brought me to the beach instead. :) So yes, I consider myself so blessed...

After my morning ritual (brushing , etc.) :) , I picked up my camera and walked to the beach. I am waiting for the sunrise! The water looked so inviting, with it so calm and clear. But I'll wait for an hour or so before going in. The water is freakin' cold! hehe...

See.. how can I gripe? With this beautiful sunrise comes a beautiful day....

I just sat in the bench basking at the beauty infront of me. I said a little prayer of thanksgiving for the gift of family and friends. For his protection. And for the many blessings he's given me.

I am exposed to a lot of stress with my work. But at this moment, I am at peace. And so I thank God for it.

Then I heard someone calling me, saying that breakfast is ready. We had fried rice, fried egg, chorizo and fried "bulad bolinao". Omg.. I am so happy we have dried fish. I have not eaten one for months now. :) After preparing John's breakfast of biscuits with bacon, we all gathered at the table and ate.

A LITTLE MYTH:

I had no idea what kind of banana was this, so I asked the caretaker. He said, that it's "Saging Tindok". Hmmmn.. so this is it, I thought. Visayan mythology says that if you wait for its flower to open on midnight of the full moon, and whatever is inside the flower will go directly to your mouth, it will give you the power to see the evil spirits around you. And be able to fight them. I grew up with that story. But I don't know if it's true. haha...

I was thinking, I am not interested. Gawd, waiting outside alone during the full moon. Not gonna happen! LOL Besides the so called power will make you somewhat like the "ghost buster".. Never mind.. he he...

My day ended slowly.. But that's what this vacation is. To not do anything. Except go to the beach, relax.. Eat.. relax.. hehe.. Plus I got the chance to eat biko and dried fish.. I am happy. :)

Samal Island (Day 1)

Thursday, 5 April 2012:

I woke up today with excitement in my heart. I've been looking forward to this trip for quite sometime now. We booked a resort for 4 days and 3 nights exclusively for my family , our staff, their families and a few friends.

This is our first time at Island Hills Beach Resort. So we didn't know what to expect. We were told that there's a 2 bedroom cottage that can accomodate 6 people per room. And that they have a dormitory for the rest of the guests. It's supposed to house at least 25 people per day. I thought that at Php5,000.00 per day, the price is cheap.

So I baked biscuits for John's "baon". He doesn't eat rice in the mornings, you see. So I have to prepare his bread for 4 days. :)

I told everyone to come early because the line at the ferry gets too long and we don't want to get stuck at the port.

By 7:30a.m. , we were already on our way to the ferry boat port. I thought that was early. Boy, was I shocked when I saw the line. We were at least 3 kms away from the port. That's how long the line was!

We finally boarded the ferry boat by 10am. From Babak port, we travelled to the resort for almost an hour on a rough road passing through the barangays of Tagbitan-ag, Tagluno and Aundanao.

Aundanao is such a sight to behold.... I thought that the tiring trip was well worth it. :) True, the beach in this part of Samal doesn't have white sand, but the water is crystal clear you can see nemo and other fishes swimming beside you. Beautiful right?

A few minutes after our arrival at the resort, the fisherman working for our friend arrived. He brought us fresh Lapu-lapu and other "isda sa bato" which he caught from their "bobo" (cage). Gee..this beach life is impressing me more and more... hehe Imagine frying and grilling these very fresh fishes! Yummy huh?

After a sumptous lunch of Afritada, fried fish and pancit canton, we decided to roam the island by boat. Yes, it's not wavy around this time. The big waves starts around 4 in the afternoon. So it's ok to use a small motor boat before that. :)

We bid goodbye to Manong and his family after the buko drinking session.. hehe. Had to go back before the waves get too big. Err.. I don't know how to swim remember? :)

Back at the resort, everyone was just relaxing. Either on the beach, at the cabana or just sitting at the open cottages facing Samal Gulf. :)

Before dinner , John and I went to the Cabana. And checked what the excitement was all about. It turned out that Val and Kim caught a fish. :) While the others are busy fishing.

All in all, it was a beautiful day that started with a hitch but ended wonderfully... Not just for me and John but for everybody we brought along with us in this 4day vacation. :)

A Meeting With Journeying James..

I've been reading James' blog for quite sometime. He's a 20-something blogger who travels in and outside the Philippines on a budget (P400 - 500/ day, including accomodation) and blogs about it.
I find that really amazing.

So when I read that he's doing the "Isangdaan Journey", I told him to contact me when he gets to Davao.

"Isangdaan" is the theme of his recent escapade. A one hundred day trip all over the Philippines with
Php500.00 per day as his maximum budget. Cool right?

On Thursday, 29 March 2012, James texted and asked " Ate Lea, is the lunch together still on?" I said yes. And so John and I met him at our favorite restaurant, Boyd's.

In the middle of our conversation, eating pasta and pizza, James told us about his trip to Mati and how he helped rescue a "pawikan" and watched it lay a total of 136 eggs.

So now you understand why I love travelling? :) I've never seen a Pawikan, like James did. But I am glad that a fellow blogger had that kind of an experience. Watching from the video, I found it really awesome!

Pancake House

Sundays usually mean sleeping late (if I can go back to sleep, that is...) and having a brunch at Pancake House.

Well, we don't have to go out to eat. :) But since our site visit to our projects in Samal Island falls on Sundays, we just give ourselves a treat before going to work. Yes, you read it right, we work even on Sundays. :)

Their 3 piece pancake with butter and syrup. :)

My only comment, they need to change their brand of orange juice. It sucks. Sorry....

Yep, their pork tocino with garlic rice tastes as good as it looks.. :) Waffles for John at the far end.

Pancake House has a variety of menus. They've got waffles as shown above, (yummy too!) , Filipino breakfast which consists of beef tapa, daing or pork. Western breakfast with sausage as one of its side dishes. They serve steak as well. And oh, you should try their yoghurt. :)

So if you're in Davao, try Pancake House. Serving time is only 15 mins. Helps if you're in a hurry. hehe

Hey, it was Araw ng Dabaw yesterday! :) So we had a special holiday.

For the past 10 years, my family and I usually watch the parade. And give away fliers at the same time. But this year, I opted not to. Migraine and heat don't go together. I found the sun too bright yesterday, so I just couldn't do it..

But to celebrate with the rest of the Dabawenyo's, we went to Boyd's along Palma Gil St., Davao City. They had an "Eat All YOu Can" promo on pasta and pizza for P199.00 per head. :)

My nephew, Blaire, was so happy! haha.. His father, Ruben , joked that Blaire's side A and side B were both full...

Mama isn't into pizza and pasta. So I ordered "porkloin with Java rice" for her.

The chef and owner of Boyd's is a Filipino who trained in New York. And he's really good. So even if there's no promo, John and I make it a point to have lunch or dinner there. My usual order consist of fried dumplings and porkloin with Java Rice. While John loves their Meaty Jeff pizza, (it consist of ham, bacon, beef, mushroom, etc.).

Their BBQ sandwich is really yummy too!

Also, their spaghetti with white sauce coupled with a freshly baked garlic bread. It's out of this world! :)

So if you're in Davao, never miss Boyd's.

Boyd's is located in Palma Gil St., Davao City. From Gaisano Mall in Bajada, turn right at the first corner, going to Obrero. It's the 2nd bldg, on the left. It's so easy to find, you won't get lost.

Downton Abbey

If there's one show that I wouldn't get tired of watching, (other than Stargate), it's Downton Abbey. It's so awesome, I feel like I'm being transported to a different era everytime I watch it. The actors and actresses are so great, you'd feel the emotion each of them portray.

To borrow the words of Wikipedia, the series is set in the fictional Downton Abbey, the Yorkshire country house of the Earl and Countess of Grantham, and follows the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants during the reign of King George V. The first series spans the two years before the Great War beginning with news of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, which sets the story in motion. The second series covers the years 1916 to 1919, and the 2011 Christmas Special December covers the 1919 Christmas period, ending in early 1920.

Highclere Castle in Hampshire[2][3] was used for exterior shots of Downton Abbey and most of the interior filming. The servants' living areas were constructed and filmed at Ealing Studios.[4]

The village of Bampton in Oxfordshire was used for filming outdoor scenes, most notably St Mary's Church and the library, which serves as the entrance to the cottage hospital.[5] The Yorkshire towns and cities of Easingwold, Kirkby, Kirkbymoorside, Leeds, Malton, Middlesbrough, Ripon, Richmond, Thirsk and York have been mentioned by characters in the series.

So why am I writing about this?

I don't know why, but I've always wanted to go to Europe. It's like I have a love affair with the place, even if I haven't been there. Maybe it's because my mother's ancestors came from Spain and from what I understand, there's a place called Montes there, which happens to be my mom's family name.

Downton Abbey, being in London, has given me another reason to tour that part of the world. :) John is a history buff so he wants to see the castles as much as I do.

And so the quest begin. :)

Booking of hotels, flights, etc. is so easy. Compared to obtaining a visa, that is. Sometimes, it sucks being a Filipino. The embassies automatically think that we will stay and work in their country. So getting a tourist visa is such a difficult task . Suntok sa buwan , ika nga... Whew!

I don't have a choice but to try though.. And hope that the consul is in a good mood during my interview. :)

In fairness, from what I read, Uk and European embassies would really dissect your documents. So if yours is complete, then you have a chance.

So there goes. A trip to UK and Europe, an addition to my bucketlist. :) What's yours?

One of the best places to go when it comes to hair treatments and the like in Davao City is David's Salon. I've been going there for years but mostly when I need a pedicure. :) I like the polish they use because it stays a lot longer than the other salons use. You see I've tried them all. So I'd like to think that I know what I'm talking about. hehe .. Seriously though, if you like a good quality polish when you have a manicure or a pedicure, go to David's Salon at the 2nd Floor of NCCC Mall, Maa, Davao City.

Err.. I don't get paid when I write these things. :) But our women out there I'm sure, would like to have value for the money services right? So I hope this helps...

Ok, let's go back to my hair treatment. I was told that stress can make your hair dry. If that is true, then I guess that's what's causing mine. hu hu.. I cannot close our business. I love my work, period! So I'll just take care of the stress some other way huh?! LOL

And I am so glad that I went to David's for that purpose. I forgot to ask exactly what they used, but boy I've never felt this good with my hair for a very long time. This is so vain.. haha. But women don't like messy hair when we're working. We don't want the "mahangin sa labas" look right? It is our crowning glory after all..

Currency Trading

Good morning world! :) It's 4:14 a.m. in my part of the world now. Too early for most people but normal for me. I wish I slept for 2 more hours though! (sigh...)

Oh well...

Since I couldn't go back to sleep anymore, I started analyzing where the Philippine Peso- US dollar is going. Not your typical morning thingy huh?! lol.. But then again, I am not your typical girl in the block. ha ha

So I have here the PHP-USD chart for the past 12 months.

Look at the broken lines I've created.

If you notice, the trend during the last quarter of 2011 is upward. That means the Philippine Peso has depreciated. And the US dollar strengthened. In lay man's term, if you're earning US dollar , you will get more pesos.

But if you are buying the US dollar, in the case of importers, that's bad news because they would have to pay more to buy 1 dollar. Or if you have a dollar loan, that's worse! Can you imagine having an importer with a $1M loan? From P42M pesos to P44M? That sucks huh?

So that's how wallstreet makes their billions. :) By forecasting where the stocks or the currencies are going. These are all paperworks. But the investment is real.

Knowing the trend is important. It will tell you somehow where the currency is going. So you would know whether to buy or sell your dollar.

Technically, the Philippine peso has gained strength when the year opened. And it's continuing to do so. But if it breaks Php42.80 level, the peso will depreciate again to :

a) Php43.45 - tough level to break but when it does..it can shoot up to b) Php44.10 .

Good news for our overseas workers. :)

And the Philippine economy in general. Why?

Because when the peso is cheap, worldwide investors or even travellers will choose our country as their business or leisure destination.

Think.. that's exactly the reason why retirees come to the Philippines. Their dollar goes a long way in our country. :)

Right now though, the Philippine Peso is expensive. At Php42.20 per one US dollar, our workers abroad are probably crying. They're losing everytime they send their hard earned money to the Philippines.

Call center owners are probably complaining too. :) Imagine them paying P1,000,000.00 to their employees. At P42.20 = they would have to come up with $23,696.70. Compared to $22,727.30 at Php44/1 usd. See that's $969.00 additional cost on their part.

So if you are to ask me, I would prefer a cheaper Philippine peso. P45 or more. That means, more investors for our country. And of course, more pesos for those who are earning in US Dollars.

My long term outlook is to buy the US dollar. If you have a dollar account and you don't need the money, just keep it. Let it sleep for awhile. Then exchange it into peso later.

With the news these days, I believe that the peso will fall. Don't worry, a cheaper peso is better for our economy anyway. :)

Greenbelt...

I would have wanted to write this down weeks ago but time had been very hectic. I'm glad I couldn't sleep early tonight, so I got this chance to blog about my visit last month to Greenbelt Mall in Makati.

Until now, I am still in awe of the place. That sounds so shallow right? lol But it's true!

Manilenyos probably take it for granted because you know, it's just there. They can go to Makati anytime they want to. But I am a "promdi"! haha.. For my non-filipino readers, that's our local word for "from the province". :)

Ayala, the developer of Greenbelt, had a masterplan. When they built the mall, they wanted nature to be a part of it. Hence, the name greenbelt.

So even if you're inside a mall, it still feels like being in a province with huge trees , ponds and waterfalls. There's just another world out there... I'm glad that there's still a shade of green in the middle of these high end developments.

I hope the pictures I took will somehow show the beauty I really admired...

If you're in Manila, try visiting Makati and Greenbelt. The place is so different. Wonderfully different, that is... :) It reminded me of Orchard Lane in Singapore.

The Road To GenSan

For those who are wondering how's the road condition going to General Santos City (commonly known as GenSan), I prepared a photo essay for you. Here's hoping that it would help your travel plans going there. :)

We left Davao City around 5 a.m. today. We had to make sure that we got there during office hours because we were targeting businessmen and employees alike for our caravan. Our way of promoting the real properties we're selling in Davao City. Oh yeah, like you, I work hard too. hehe

So enough business talk. I did that the whole day today!

ON OUR WAY TO GENSAN:

This was taken in Digos, Davao Del Sur. I love the big trees beside the road.

Outside Digos, you'll see this beautiful rice field.

Roads are being repaired. So you'll see lots of these on the way to GenSan.

The view as we start heading up. This area is called "otsenta". It's 80 kms from Davao to this point.

Ooops.. there's a landslide. :( Not to worry though, I've seen government workers, making drainage system. Water runs down from the mountain everytime it rains. So hopefully with the drainage system
in place, the problem will be solved! Ok so at least we know where the taxes are going. :)

WE ARE FINALLY IN GENERAL SANTOS CITY:

Davao to GenSan is more or less 140kms. So that's about 3 hours or less using private vehicles. If you're going to commute, it might take longer because buses pick up passengers from time to time. And yes, there are buses travelling from Davao to GenSan 24 hours a day. Passenger Vans too.

I fell asleep mostly from Davao to Digos. I remember John waking me up and saying that people are waving at us. haha.. I told him that those are passengers waving for the van to stop, thinking that ours is a passenger one. hehe..

The business district of GenSan. I am so happy, we gave away thousands of fliers. I'm hoping that
they'll come back to us. :)

SM is everywhere! :) They're building a new one in GenSan now. I just wish they would put a garden inside the mall, just like Green belt huh?!

Ahh... Robinsons in GenSan is bigger than the one in Davao! :) And they got nice things there
too.

ON OUR WAY BACK TO DAVAO:

We stopped at Cliffhanger in otsenta, a restaurant with an overlooking view of the sea and Digos. We just bought water (had lunch at Jo's Chicken Inato in GenSan already :) , so we can have a photo op. haha

Like I always say, true there's a small portion that even I would not go. But of most of Mindanao is a beautiful haven that's just waiting for us to make our own adventures...

Valentines in Eden

Eden Nature Park had a valentine's promo. An overnight stay included a serenade while having dinner. Romantic right? John told me to book a room and avail of the package. I was grinning. :) Who wouldn't? With my wonderful husband and in a beautiful place like Eden, it's just perfect!

Then, I realized. February 14 fell on a Tuesday. I have an 8am appointment the next day. So that means, overnight in Eden is impossible. hu hu...

Oh well...

So in lieu of that, we had an early celebration last Sunday. Not as romantic as the original plan but with the sumptous lunch , a walk under the trees, photo op with the butterflies and listening to the sound of the birds at Eden's aviary.. With John. I couldn't ask for more. :)

THE FOOD:

The buffet lunch was good. As always. This time, I tasted something new. Their apple and coleslaw salad. It was really delicious, like a dessert. Although it was meant as a vegetable salad. :)

The vegetables in their salad bar are grown in their own organic garden. So it's really fresh.

Another thing I loved was their beef caldereta.

Dessert consisted of Lychee Gelatine, banana cake, and fresh fruits. There was something in a small glass with fruit, toppings and cream. I don't know what's the name but it tasted good! :)

THE AVIARY :

John loves birds. While I love singing to our birds. haha... Works perfectly right? Anyway, after the heavy lunch, we both decided to walk around. And headed towards the aviary.

There's nothing special with this bridge. But I just love the whole composition of this picture. It looked so relaxing to me. A rustic old bridge with huge trees and its cool breeze... Hmmm...

THE BUTTERFLY GARDEN:

I so love this place. I just wanted to sit down and feel the cool breeze on my face...

I don't know what this flower is called, but I like its color. It's beautiful right? :)

So if you still don't know where to go on Valentine's Day. Leave the city and head towards Eden. :)

The Fishes at Nuvali

In 2010, I went to Makati for an accreditation with Avida. That's in preparation for the Ayala projects in Davao City. It was a five day training that included the presentation of their newest project in Sta. Rosa, Laguna named Nuvali. Back then, the place was still full of grass. But the project consisted of an IT Park, a beautiful subdivision and a man made lake.

Two years after, I had the chance to visit the place coming from Tagaytay.

Boy, was I surprised! The place looked amazing. Specially the lake with its thousands of golden Koi fishes glowing in the water.

Other than feeding the Kois, one can also tour the whole lake. You can join the boat trip for a fee. :)

The park has several restaurants and coffee shop as well. Before going back to Makati where we were staying, we bought some pies at Conti's. They never disappoint. I love their ham and cheese pie. :)

As I said in my previous blog, when you're in Manila, make time to visit Tagaytay. From there, stop at Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, Philippines. :)

Where To Buy "Pasalubong" in Tagaytay

Our friend Marlic, took us to Mary Ridge. She said that we can buy our pasalubong there. I thought it was just a store, but boy was I surprised!

Mary Ridge Retreat House is run by the Good Shepherd sisters. Selling food/giveaways to travellers is a way of earning to finance their scholars.

What I love about the place is their chapel. The altar faces the panoramic view of Taal Lake and the volcano.

It was just so peaceful and beautiful.

When I reached there, I just had to say thank you. How can I not? I could be somewhere else or someone else and having a miserable life. But I was there enjoying the day with my husband and friends...

After visiting the chapel, we proceeded to buy Adobong Mani (peanuts). The small bottle is P60.00 and it tasted good. :)

Beside Mary Ridge is the good shepherd's store. That's where we bought the Ube Jam. I also got Ube Roll. Lengua (milk-tasting biscuits). Cake with pili nuts. My family and staff said they tasted good too. :)

Is an exclusive complex located in Tagaytay Ridge, which boasts of a fantastic view of the lake and Taal Volcano.

The place is composed of The Inn (http://theinnatcliffhousetagaytay.com/accoms.htm) for those who opt to stay longer.

But for those who want to enjoy the view while spending time with friends and family on a day trip only, restaurants like Boun Giorno, Cafe Platito, Fire Lake Grill and Cafe Breton can be found there.

We had our lunch at Boun Giorno. And the food was awesome!

I ordered Osco Bosso with Risotto. It's a very tender veal meat with sauce. Risotto is buttered rice. :) Combine both and you have a very scrumptious meal...

Nina said the lamb was also delicious!

Even their sandwich looks good huh?! :) John was happy.

Marlic ordered steak , her favorite when she goes to Boun Giorno. :)

So imagine that, good food with good friends plus a cool, nice breeze while watching the beautiful view of Taal Lake and Volcano... awesome right?! I'm so lucky. And I thank God for giving me the chance to be there.

It looked foggy that day. :) But we didn't mind. The breeze was cooler than the aircon!
