Ok, this is the popular Neocaridana heteropoda, but this is the Fire Red Shrimp variety

Next is the Yellow shrimp...Yellow Fire Shrimp to be exact =.="

I wonder why they give such a funny name, I can't relate fire with yellow...lolz

The best close up I can get.....fire? yellow?...tell me if you can relate fire with yellow, haha

Another funny name Chocolate shrimp....Chocolate?!?! Well at least I can relate brown and chocolate :D

There...Chocolate shrimp...another variety of the Neocaridina heteropoda

I'll be attending this workshop so if any of you guys attending, then I'll see you there :D

And by the way, I heard rumors that the date of the workshop was brought forward to the 27th November 2010 by popular request because it falls on Saturday which I think is much convenient to the local hobbyist.

If in any case it is true, then for those flying down to Kuala Lumpur, please make sure you are staying here extra longer, coz you don't want to be flying home on the 27th. Just to be safe, be there till the end of the aquafair event which is till the 28th November 2010.

So I guess that's about all, and for your info I'll be flying down on the 25th November, so till then see you there and see me live in real person too....haha :D
I guess it's java moss, because of it's form. The pic below shows the wild moss I collected a while back.

wild moss, I'm certain it's java moss because of the structure of it's strand...I can be wrong though :(

Check out the links below, you can read more about my moss collecting trip in my older blogpost:

http://borneosucker.blogspot.com/2009/11/left-my-camera-battery-at-home.html

http://borneosucker.blogspot.com/2009/06/collecting-moss.html

So back to the moss carpet story...this is the result of using the above moss to make moss carpet...check out the pics...and pardon me, pics are blurry because I capture using a handphone camera :(

Java moss carpet, they grow in the form of individual strand like dwarf hairgrass :D This was taken on 2nd July 2010

Pic taken on 29th July 2010, just within few weeks, it became so dense :D...time for some trimming though

And if you ever wonder how I started growing this moss, how I tie it....here it is...

Yeap, this is how I started growing the moss. Just tie on some pebbles or small rocks. And arrange it where you want the carpet to be :D

There you have it, my simple technique to creating a java moss carpet :D

~Cheers!

P.S Feel free to share this blogspot :D

Super red Blyxa japonica

Never seen my aquarium for almost a week, and this is what happen, my Blyxa japonica turn to red colour.
I did some trimming on my Rotala wallichii quite some time ago, didn't discard the whole plant, but instead just place them in a bucket of water. I don't remember how long I left them there, and today I check, I saw the emersed form.

Check out the pics...

Rotala wallichii emersed form and flowering

They even bear flowers in the emersed form, tiny purple colour flowers...nice and cute :D

If you can see from the picture, the plant is just kept floating in the bucket.....and still it grows, amazing!

But this is the only one that I have in my tank now :D

The Rotalla walichii is quite an interesting plant, it will fold it's leaves, mostly towards the tip during the night, and will bloom with it's leaves wide open during the day...very interesting to observe :D

Having this plant in a tank, is like having 2 different scape, though it doesn't alter the scape, but the folding and unfolding of the leaves makes the tank looks different :D

This was taken at night...

...And this is during the day

Here's some behavior of the plant in my tank...it starts to bloom in the morning, and sleep at around 2 hours after sunset. They are pretty fast grower, trimming about every 2 weeks, but sometime I will let it grow longer to form an overhanging red canopy. Given enough light, the tip of the plant will turn red, otherwise it will not exhibit it's potential colour in poor lighting. I will say it's a moderate to high lighting plant. And yes, this is more suitable as a background plant.

So I guess that's a bout it, for what I have to say about this plant :D....The Sleeping Beauty, Rotala wallichi :D

Glosso can grow on gravel

Here's how I do it, in the tank I'm working with now...check out the pic...
CO2: Pressurized CO2 at approx 1 bubble per sec

I didn't make any documentation or photo journal of the setup process of this tank, because I've lost my camera, and that explain why I took the pics today using a handphone camera, anyway I use a similar technique in my previouse tank setup. Check it out here...
Don't believe me? Try it...you will get lots of infos from designs, to recipes......

Kinda funny to see so many sites about DIY CO2, and yet I publish my own copy here...haha.....WHY? Because, today, I happen to see the DIY CO2 diagram on my sister desktop which I draw few month ago for a friend....so, it just spark like that, and here goes my DIY CO2...enjoy :D

Here's the diagram which I draw for a friend few months back...okay, ignore the Copyright, this one I edited today :D

Okay...here's what you need...
Material:
- 2 plastic bottles (water bottle, soda bottle, etc...your choice)...make sure it comes with their respective cap :D
- 1 extra bottle cap of the same bottle type
- some air tube
- a check valve
- a diffuser

Tools you might need:
- something you can use to make holes on the cap of the bottle, such as drill, nail, etc....something you are comfortable working with :D
- pliers (you may not need this if you have strong fingers :D...hehehe)

Ingredients:
- a pinch of yeast (I use only baker's yeast)
- 2 to 3 table spoon of sugar
- water
- baking soda...(some people suggest, but personally I haven't tested with baking soda)

So that's about it...so lets start building your CO2 factory :D

Step 1. You will want to mark bottle 1 and bottle 2, so you don't get mixed up later on.

Step 2. Make one hole on the cap of bottle 1 and 2 hole on the cap of bottle 2. Make sure the size of the hole is slightly smaller than the air tube. As this will create a snug fit and act as a seal when the tube is insert into the hole.

Step 3. Insert the airtube into the holes. For easy working...cut the end of the air tube diagonally. Now with the pointed air tube, insert the tube from the top of the cap. If you have strong fingers, you can pull the pointed end of the tube, or else use a pliers to do it :D

Step 4. Build your DIY CO2 factory as in the diagram above. Make sure the check valve is in the correct direction, or else you won't get any CO2 into your tank.

Step 5: Mixing the ingredients...first make sugar water and fill it into bottle 1 till half full. Next add 1 pinch of yeast. Cap it with the extra bottle cap, and shake the solution vigorously for few moments. On the other hand, bottle 2 can be fill with plain water 2/3 or 3/4 full.

* the measurement is not quite certain, but rather a gut feeling...the more yeast, the faster the solution will finish...lesser yeast, more sugar, and the solution will last longer.

Step 6: Assemble all the parts together, this is how it looks like in real...

Bottle 1 is the one with the white cap, Bottle 2 with the blue cap

Everything similar as in the diagram I draw...accept for the stop valve (doesn't make much different with it)

View from another angle

Some explanation...
In some sites, you might see some design with a single bottle, which is bottle 1 direct to the diffuser, with check valve in between. Now you might be wondering why I use a second bottle...the reason is simply to serve as a filter. In bottle 1, the bi-product of yeast and sugar are CO2 and alcohol. So that's where the second bottle comes in, to filter the alcohol and prevent it from entering your tank :D

I had experienced before using only a single bottle, my tank smell alcohol....LOLz!!! and my fishes got poisoned by it. So for safety purposes, as a precaution, use a second bottle :D

Now...if you may ask, what bottle size I used, those in the pic are 500ml mineral water bottle. Instead of discarding it into the bin, I recycled it for the DIY CO2 :D

Well any bottle can serve for this purpose. I guess the larger the bottle, the more amount of ingredient you can add, and that might last a little longer :)....anyway my setup last for about 2 weeks....by week 2, the CO2 bubbles beginning to slow down.

So...I guess that's about it on DIY CO2....so enjoy making yours :D

Wild Hairgrass...Eleocharis sp.?

On the 7th January 2010, I found some wild hairgrass. After you check out the link...do return here to read on some of my experience with this leaf :D

Almost everything you need to know about this leaves here:
http://www.indianalmondleaves.com/

Here's an article written and published in Aquarticles.com
http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/management/Nagendra_Almond_Leaf.html
.
..
...
....
.....
....
...
..
.
I hope you enjoy the links....now my turn to share some brief story of my experience with this leaf :D

"One of the experience I have is when I was keeping Tiger Barbs, Puntius tetrazona. I bought 6 of them from the LFS and they were looking great from day 1. But after a few days, one by one gets white spot disease. I try to salt bath them for few seconds, sounds silly, but its one way of medication. Sadly, all of them died soon after, I guess they couldn't resists the salt bath or maybe I immersed them too long :(

Anyway I went back to the LFS and bought another 6. Also I didn't do any water change in my aquarium. Same thing happen after the new batch of Tiger Barbs was introduce, they were attack by white spot disease. This time, I figured out to try the Indian Almond Leaves. I knew about this leaves long time ago, but it's just that sometimes it never come across my mind...lol! So what happens is...the fishes cured within days, I didn't even quarantine them, just add the leaves into the rearing tank. After that day, not one disease and the 6 of them were healthy as ever :D"

One more story to prove to you the miracle of this leaves :D

"This story is a recent one, it involve wild bettas :D

3 cases here...fin rots, swimming isolated and with eyes getting blurred (not quite sure the exact term for this disease)...this fishes were wild caught and have been travelling around, that have cause them stress.

So what I did, same case lot's and lot's of the Indian Almond Leaves as soon as they arrive home....and they soon recovered :D

Today the wild bettas are in Swiss now :D.....arr, I'm missing them :(

How they ended up in Swiss is because they were not mine, but my Swiss friend who happen to come here for holiday. So he kept the bettas in my house for quarantine and healing before bringing them back to Swiss.....they are doing fine now, according to my friend, so that's good news :D"

So that's about it on Indian Almond Leaves :D

P.S. If you want those leaves, I do sell them, I'll make a new post on this...

How To Grow Glossostigma elatinoides

First of all..."A Merry Christmas 2009 and A Happy New Year 2010" to all my readers :D

I have recently prepared a diagram of how to grow the Glossostigma elatinoides for one of my customers who bought this plants from me. What I mean by this is that, these snails, doesn't have gills so they cannot breath underwater. Instead they have a large pulmonary sac for the gaseous exchange. Under bright light, the sac can be seen like a bubble of air trapped inside the shell.

How the snail breath is by going up to the water surface just like dolphin or whale does. Once they collected enough air, they will then return back into the water. It is like a diver's gas tank, and will last them for few moments (how long exactly I'm not sure, never really observed till that extent)...

Sometimes the snails will spend quite a while floating on the water surface breathing, before entering into the water...during this time, at first glance, you may think that the snail is weak and might be dying or maybe even dead :), but actually they are not!

Here's one interesting observation...

A snail that just fill up their air tank cannot sink, the only way for them to go back into the water is to crawl, with their foot acting like a suction cap, so they will remain underwater. But try picking them, and they will float back up.

The opposite for a snail which have an empty air tank...they will sink right to the bottom if you pick them, and try to crawl back up for air.....:D

Anyway, after knowing about the snail breathing air, they are infact aquatic snails afterall...as they cannot survive without water....try placing them out of water, they will eventually die.

Rotala rotundifolia and Hygrophila polysperma growth...

I did a new scape and planted some Rotala rotundifolia and Hygrophila polysperma. Rotala rotundifolia planted on day 1, notice the crooked stems...also this is the emerged form notice the big round leaf Hygrophilia polysperma planted on day 1, same thing notice the crooked stems...also this is the emerged form Same bunch of Rotala rotundifolia, taken from the side of the tank, notice the straight growth of the stem...it's only Day 3.....very fast, cant wait for the formation of the submerged leaf Same goes to the Hygrophilia polysperma...straighter stem growth... ...and new leaf starts growing from the tip of the Hygrophila polysperma... And the rest of the pics can be seen here, just click on the pic above to enlarge So I guess that's it.....I'll talk more on this tank once the plants starts growing and filling in... </itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>rotala rotundifolia, hobby, hygrophila polysperma</itunes:keywords>

Left my camera battery at home :(

The thing I regreted most, like the title said, forgot my camera battery :(

Why?.....because I went to collect wild moss today, and I brought along my camera, but when I was excited to take some pictures......there, my battery was lying inside its charger at home......sigh.

Left this nasty little fella at home...so no pics during the trip

Anyway.....I collected quite a lot of moss. Good thing it's done now, but then another problem occurred, my mom met with an accident last week.....Luckily she is fine. Anyway hope that explains.......hahaha :D

Well throughout this month, I collected topic which I would like to blog about (such as the plants I obtain, some tank updates and so on). But yet to find time.......anyway I would like to start with this one....How to catch daphnia or moina...I guess this gonna be a good one, especially to those struggling to find live feed for their fry or small mouth fish.

I won't go into detail of what daphnia or moina is, I guess a simple google of the term will provide the results.

What I want to share is this....

One of the method to collect or catch daphnia or moina is to first understand their natural behavior. This critters in nature are attracted to light.....just like Brine shrimp, artemia does.

So with that behavior, it's an advantage for us....just watch the video and you will know what I meant :D

To catch them, simply use a fine mesh net. Anyway, you have to work out ways on how you gonna reach those daphnia in a pond :D

Okay....this is just one method.....There's other method to catch them.....maybe next time ehh :D

<itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:subtitle>Wow!.....it's been a while since I last blog.....again, I was quite busy especially early this month.....was helping my dad setting up his office. So I decided to pay a visit to the nearby seashore to collect driftwood.

Here's what I've collected so far...

Still fresh from the shore, most of them are covered with muck

And here's the JACKPOT! Very, very expensive :(

The cheapest price combination, just for the CO2 tank (RM400) and a solenoid regulator (RM350) alone, can cost up to RM750!....oh boy!.......there is even a store sellin the kits for about RM1k.........wooo, that's way out of my reach :(

I started to wonder now, if the Planted Tank Layout hobby is really that expensive? Yes, although that high price is a one time investment for this hobby, but that is still a lot of money :(

Phew....long story short, lucky me, maybe because of my nature, I was able to outsource, and I came across CO2 tank sellin for 2 to 3 times cheaper from the LFS. I can't wait to get it for my plants.

The only thing left for me now is to outsource for the regulator. Obviously most of my readers as for now are from overseas, and probably it would be impossible to sell to them, but what the heck, I'll just post in here.

Anyway, if there's anyone interested, please feel free to leave a comment or simply email me for infos.

Following picture is roughly how big some of the plantlets relative to the size of my hand (an average adult hand...lol)....of course there's some plantlets that are much smaller (babies) than this ones.

One of the reason I wanted to grow them emersed is to propagate more of this ferns to prepare for my new scape. I hope I can try my luck in IAPLC (International Aquatic Plants Layout Contest) next year, if there's one to be held :)

So wish me luck and if you want some of this ferns, contact me.....Cheers :D

My Red Cherry Shrimp Carrying Eggs...

About a week plus after I bought my new batch of Red Cherry Shrimp, I have now 2 female shrimp carrying eggs.......man I'm happy!

Looks like it's proven that my earlier batch of Red Cherries didn't have any males, so they were not breeding.

Now I can start breeding my other Red Cherries.....time to start thinking of a breeding setup for them :)

But before that, I might visit the LFS again to get more male shrimp, coz, out of the 5 shirmp I bought earlier, 1 died, leaving me 4 shrimp, but turn out that 2 was a young female. So the reason to get more male shrimps.

Okay...here's the pic of them....not very clear shot, but good enough to present to you, enjoy :D

A candid shot before a pose...

Posing for some shot on my chopstick :)

hurried into the Java moss for hiding after photoshot :)

What! Now that's expensive, considering that this plant is a slow grower.....and that's probably the reason why I just notice this plant in my 3 month old tank :)

Check out the pic...

Anubias barteri 'petite' growing among the Java ferns

Well that's the only plant I have.....that little :)

And the next pic is the whole bogwood where those plants are growing on.....java fern, Anubias barteri 'petite', and java moss....

the Anubias barteri 'petite' such tiny among the other plants

So my plan now is try to propagate the Anubias barteri 'petite'. I'm thinkin how to reach the limited space of the plant to at least cut out a rhizome of it......and that's a real problem, coz I'm affraid I will destroy the whole plant :)

So stay tune to my next Anubias barteri 'petite' journey :D

Cardinal tetras....

Today is the first time in my life I acquire the cardinal tetras, Paracheirodon axelrodi. I've been wanting to keep this fish for many, many years, but never seen them being sold here, until earlier this week that I saw the cardinals selling in one of the LFS here in Sabah.

I know that in Peninsular Malaysia, this fish is much easier to obtain, coz the fish keeping hobby over there is much mature compared to Sabah.

After I found out earlier this week there's cardinals here.....this really got my hands itchy....lolz. And so, today I decided to get the fish.

I bought only 6 pcs just for the start at RM4 each.....I didn't want to buy too manny yet, coz I affraid I will overstock my tank, as I currently have 11 neons in it......in my glosso tank :)

So here's the pics of the lovely Cardinals....their colour is not yet optimum...hopefully after they acclimatized, they will display much intense coloration......just cant wait for that to happen :)

the cardinal tetras...

Cardinal and Neon tetras mix...

<media:rating>nonadult</media:rating>
