Both of us went out to Bukit Layang-layang with Syed Shik just after lunch to see for the first time, the18th Pasir Gudang World Kite Festival which was held from 19th to 24th February 2013. This internationally acclaimed event has been hosted since 1995. Estimated 15,000 people turned up that day according to Mr On Jabbar , the mayor of Pasir Gudang. It was an event which had enjoyed continuous coverage by Malaysian media.

We loved the colourful event very much.

It's rather an on_and_off kind of adventure with propagating stevia, the god blessed natural sweetener. So we decided to push for bigger scale, 300 seedlings. They are now at various stages of growth. I am almost ready for real stevia production.

Bakawali dalam pasu.

Our Bakawali had gone to many places, Kuala Lumpur, Pantai Remis Perak and Felda Nenering as giveaways. I had been here in Pasir Gudang Johor for slightly over a year, and within that short period the original single Bakawali plant had swell to almost a hundred at various stages of growth. It's a delicate plant with most exotic fragrant flower. They never stop to amaze me.

One thing I have not tried is putting Bakawali in the ground, probably around the trunk of a large tree. That would provide different adventure. However growing bakawali in pots is still the best with all the flexibility.

Garden Design and Concept.

I thought I knew a few things about gardening, but given a task on someone else garden or plot, DESIGN slowly becoming scary. First it is not my specialty. Second some of the things asked are beyond my gardening knowledge.

Mother used to say, you don't wait to be a millionaire to give and donate. So lets see what's the request from a blogger friend through email.

Your passion towards a greener earth is most admired. I may not have a green thumb but I share your passion for a greener earth. I hope to seek your advice on this garden project that I'm planning for my soon to be opened kindergarten. I wanted to turn a 24 meter-run of wall with planter box into a beautiful wall garden and edible garden for the children to enjoy. Attached is a photo of the wall and planter box. I may have the passion but lacks the knowledge and so I hope it is not too much trouble to bother you with the following questions :

1- The width of the planter box is only 30 cm with a depth of 25-30 cm, what type of edible plants can be grown in such a small planter box. I hope tomatoes and green beans can be among them. 2-How do I grow creeper plants to cover the wall without having to share the small planter box with the edible garden? I worry that the soil, direct sun and space in the planter box may not be enough to be shared by the creeper plants and the edible plants.

3-My goal is to have the wall covered with easy-to-maintain creeper plant that is thin layered and would not block the sun required by the edible garden that I plan to grow in the entire 24 meter planter box. Do you think that is possible? and if it is, what creeper plant will that be and how do I grow it?

4- For the edible garden, can I use one type of soil for different type of plants such as herbs, leafy vegetable, tomatoes, cucumber, green beans, cabbage and etc? what soil will that be and can I get it from any nurseries? Where can I find varieties of plant seeds or seedlings? I do have a longer list of questions, but I will refrain myself till I get your reply :)

Suggestion:

1. Most vegetables can be grown in 30cm wide planter box. For immediate impact spinach would be good for children to shout and yell because spinach is quick. Tomato and brinjals may add colour to planter box. But of all vegetables, cabbages would definitely steal the show. I tried cabbage before, growing them them in pots. With cabbage, everyone will stop and ask questions.... haha.

2. Creeper: I know pokok duit-duit which crawl on coconut trees. On brick wall, I suppose creative addition of cocopeat may encourage such growth.

3. That creeper plant (pokok duit-duit) doesn't get itself rooted to the ground. It's born as aerial plant.

4. If I were you, I would retain the original soil but add compost and organic fertiliser. Most gardening supplies can be purchased from nurseries, including seeds.

Gardening is an adventure of success and failure. So lets not worry too much, as long as we can be passionate about, things will get better and we feel happy about the gardening adventure.

Coconut is truly tropical, designed to migrate to faraway lands. It's within the belt of equator that the plant or tree thrive. Tropical beaches will not be complete without tall coconut trees which will sway sweetly in tune with rhythm of the wind. The coconut with thick lightweight husk will be able to float and will flow along the river or sea. Coconut will reach the land and grow.. That's how coconut conquer tropical islands and beaches. Only with the intervention of man, that coconuts are domesticated into plantations for commercial purposes...

The tree will get old, as anything else coconut trees has to go through different phases... and the look is fairly interesting...

and that would probably be the words uttered by plants and trees over million of years as they live through adverse conditions, heat, cold and storms and survive for a day longer. It needed just a gust of wind to push the poor celosia argentea down, and the battle cry echoed again and again get up get up get up i will fight.... Within a week, the poor plant exhibited tremendous effort to get up and produce new shoots. It is really a sentimental display of will to survive, by our only celosia argentea at the backyard.

It's more than a month since I last did a post. It's end of the year thing, where curtain had to be closed, and reopened. Work-wise it's all about closing the year 2012, and puting down plans for 2013. Going through the phase is very absorbing, sitting down with associates, charting the timeline, identifying key performance factors, critical strategic projects and everything else within the periphery of Strategic Plan.

Raja Zarith Sofiah Awards is one very exciting strategic initiative which was launched yesterday 10th of January 2013 at Persada Johor Bharu. The entire concept of RZSA aims to showcase the diverse talents and skills, as well as the creativity and innovation of Malaysians. The RZSA provides a platform for the creatively gifted Malaysians to shine.

Gardening is still ON. New plants are growing. I will soon write about gardening the old way, more about excitement of growing them than the bountiful harvest itself (if there is any). As more passion fruits turn red and more and more flowers appearing, the vine lose its charm. Kids dont turn around in the morning telling kakdah about ripening fruits anymore . I didn't realise how an exciting adventure with passion fruits slowly lose it's prominence, centre of things so to speak. The excitement is fading...

I had tried The Three Sisters Garden as sustainable gardening concept which waswell tested by the Indians in America for centuries. Now is "banana circle".... I will write more about this as I journey along.

It was Sunday, 2nd December 2012. Grand Ballroom Level 3 Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The event was Piala Seri Endon 2012. It was named after the late Tun Endon Mahmood. The Cup or Piala was conceived to discover and provide a platform or support, recognition and encouragement of Malaysia's batik - making talent. It is an annual event that is open only to Malaysians over 18 years of age, and is part of the Malaysian Batik: Crafted for The World Movement, which was launched by Tun Endon in 2003.

12 entries made it to the final out of 64. Our team with Elegance of Betta Splenden was in the final too. Both of us (Bangchik and Kakdah) made a long trip to Kuala Lumpur to get a glimpse of a different world, the world of fashion......

The pictures were taken yesterday 13.11.2012 at 6.30pm. The beautiful butterfly enjoyed marigold flower so much that it kept coming back. A quick check in the internet identified it as either plain lacewing (cethosia penthesilea methypsea) or malay lacewing ( cethosia hypsea hypsina). I can't figure out which one.

The trellis is ready, six cucumber seedlings had come up to the fourth leaves. Everything seems set for another adventure with cucumber. The seeds were given last month by Azwar an old friend.

Then we had to be away for two days, attending Yop's convocation in Bangi. Losing seedlings at that stage is going to be heartbreaking, and to make it worse, our neighbour Syed had to be away too. So we decided to temporarily put them in the bathroom. We were back on Sunday 4th November 2012, what a relief, they looked alright.

Seeds will be obsolete if stored for far too long especially in the kind of weather we are having in Malaysia. One eggplant was allowed to grow and grow and finally turned yellow. It was so big. I scooped out seeds, and it could easily be thousands. I germinated immediately, filling up 104-tray. There is no intention of selling them at all, and the whole process is to satisfy my earlier hypothesis that fresh seeds will germinate better.

So, as expected every single seed germinated...... 104!. The most I am going to use is 20 in the vegetable patch over the left side of the backyard.... The rest is for the neighbours and visitors, - kakdah's green giveaways, in a down to earth reply to modern cry - sustainable living. Kakdah may not have the capacity to champion 500,000 strong march down Kuala Lumpur for green living or stop jungle clearing campaign. And all she has is the green pencil to give some colour to the canvas in form of little seedlings giveaways....

After years of germination attempts, we can almost gauge what's the outcome, given the age of seeds and weather conditions. My way is crude, no lab, no meter readings.... just plain layman approach. Like an old fisherman who can tell storm is coming, not repeating weatherman's report on TV but understanding the tingling feeling at ear lobes..... hmmmm...hmmm... haha.

TANDUK RUSA ~ STAGHORN ~ DEERHORN

Every plant has a story to tell, like us too, humans. This eleborate fern known locally as pakis tanduk rusa or staghorn /deer horn fern really traveled far. It was taken (through division technique) from my sister's place in Perak. Five hundred and fifty kilometers away, or 7 hours by car. I wonder if the spores can travel that far surfing through the sky with it's life-time natural dispersal agent, the wind. Spores are seeds for ferns, so small and light almost like dust.

The fern ended up the large raintree, at the right side of our house. It was placed in position by tying up with steel wire. After almost six months, the fern manage to grow and cling to the tree and we had removed the wire.

We measure the overall height of this gigantic fern..... a whopping 6 feet from top to bottom!!

To us, the staghorn fern is still a 6 month old baby...

Pegaga

Pegaga is as old as malay traditions. It's one of the easiest herb to find in the wild. It can adapt and will grow better in gardens. I even try growing pegaga in pots. The plant is primarily a creeper but it doesn't mind growing in plastic container. Both of us don't consume a lot, just two or three leaves will do as salad.

The Pennywort herb is a member of the dill and carrot family. Also known as Gotu Kola, Pegaga or Centella, it boasts numerous health benefits. These include increased youthfulness and vitality, improved eyesight and memory, relief from pain associated with arthritis and relief from insomnia.

Bakawali changed it's schedule.

So I thought I know all. I had formed some mental conclusions that bakawali is a plant of extreme rigidity and precision, that it will start it's blooming process from dusk and everything will end by dawn, a nocturnal flowering. This particular bakawali wish to be different, showing it has a will of it's own, controlling when to bloom and when to end.

after the last two had finished blooming.

There were four of them, coming out at different nodes of a single leaf. One bloomed earliest, followed by another the next night and the other two the third night. These flowers seemed to open much later than normal. Previous blooming started around 7 pm. Withe these it was much later, around 10 pm.

It was fun to watch how the stalk and flowers all spaced out nicely, no neck twisting or locking. The distance between the four were almost the same, like a synchronized blooming show..... and that is NATURE..

Growing chili centil: shining green.

Growing chili is fun. After years of growing chili, we know what to expect during germination, then transplanting and so on. We can almost tell when the first flower would appear as the main stem branch out. There would be rounds and rounds of flowering and fruiting. Then somewhere along the way, problems would appear, leaves yellowing, leaves wrinkling, white flies visits, aphids sleeping at the underside of leaves and many more. There would be harvest after harvest, then the plants get too old that they had to go.

Seven chili plants centil variety are still going strong at the backyard. I think we started with 9, then two become stunted, that I decided to pull them out. These plants are 4 month old. Last two weeks, I harvested every single chili on the plants, both red and green. The plants reacted well with organic and foliar fertiliser, and now the plants are fruiting with zest!! All green....., and it will a week or two before some will turn red.

Fish Head Curry: Kakdah's specialty

Sunday Morning, adik, the youngest was here and that made three of us. We went over to a friend's house in Kota Chahaya Masai for fish, fresh from fishing trip. We ended with a kilo of ikan duri, kembung, talang and mayong. There was a nice fresh looking fish head (ikan jenahak) that attracted my attention. All together RM40..... and a baldi full ( a pail full). So, it's fish head curry for lunch!

Even with gardening as hobby, we still had to purchase certain vegetables from the store. For Kakdah's cooking of fish head curry, some ingredients were fresh from the garden; small chili, long chili, brinjals, okra and rose onions.

It was just a coincidence that, earlier in the morning Ruhaznawati had been messaging about gardening issues. She asked what's for lunch, fish head curry I replied. She practically shouted that curry had been their Sunday standard menu for many years!.....

There we go, thousand miles apart, menu for the lunch was the same!

Growing Pineapple: ready to bear fruit.

Pineapple is the name of this fruiting tropical plant. In Malaysia, it is commonly known as nanas or nenas. There are variations over the sound, where it is lanas ( or lanah ) in Kelantan and in the northern states, people name it nangnaeh.

So after months of waiting , one plant at the edge of the row decided to bear fruit. A sweet colour indeed, pinkish red!

The leaves are quite spiky. Faizal, Kakdah's brother mentioned about pineapples producing thorns as a sign of stress. Poor soils, prolong drought and congestion are stress factors. I am not too sure which factor really encourage thorns along the leaves with our pineapples. Thorns pose no real problem, except it would be difficult to do weeding around the plants. I remembered the mutiara variety as seedlings, they were almost clean without thorns.

In fact I dont expect the fruit to appear so soon, since the plants are not a year yet. I remembered sometime last month I did spray flower inducement fertiliser, the leftover for Kakdah's orchids. That probably trigger the flowering or fruiting. The foliar spray has boron micronutrient, necessary for flowering and fruiting .....

It will take about six months for the tiny baby fruit to develop and mature ready for harvest. Therefore it would be interesting to see how the tiny baby develops through October, November, December, January, February, and March next year. I wonder which one will bear the next baby fruit, among the twenty plants.

A natural no calorie sweetener. Stevia is the answer for diabetics to have the old life back when coffee is so sweet and refreshing.

The other day Aina came and asked for stevia. She took one. I saw money and stevia changing hands while the two were talking. I never ask how much Kakdah charged, because the business side of our garden is in the hands of Kakdah. That's her freedom......

The latest addition to our stevia is 100 seedlings, a different specie to what we had before. The leaves are rounder and bigger. They are in shade now until strong enough to bask under the hot sun!

Ulam Raja, tracing the roots.

All of us fall within a particular family tree and if every birth is recorded since the beginning of time we can really understand more how each family interact with another family tree through marriage. I can only trace to our great grandfather by the name Mat Saman. The elders used to relate stories that Mat Saman was a man of importance in Kedah sultanate. One of his son Mat Isa moved out of Kedah after a feud, as a teenager with his younger brother and settled in Pantai Remis Perak. We have stopped trying to trace the family roots beyond Mat Saman as we had figured out the reasons of Mat Isa departure southwards. There is no reason to scrutinize old wounds and the best is to come to term with ancestral history and live with it.

On Kakdah side, her family can be traced back to Yemen , and she retains the sharp middle-east features. That's how life goes....

It's about our ulam raja. I remembered taking seeds while visiting Kakdah's elder sister who lived in Tanjong Rambutan, Perak. Those were the seeds later germinated to fill up a section of our Putrajaya garden in the year 2008. Then we moved northwards to Tanah Merah in 2010 and a year later traveled southwards and settled in Pasir Gudang, Johor. It's almost nomadic, each time bringing along the whole family, belongings and seeds. Ulam raja traveled too........

Over here in Pasir Gudang Johor they are almost to the third generation already. First planted late last year, then the seedlings around the mother plants were moved to different corner and they are flowering now. Three generations in Putrajaya, two generations in Tanah Merah, and already two generations in Pasir Gudang Johor. After seven generations, they still are ulam raja, same look, same smell, same taste, same flower. The genetic code is intact, secretly locked in seeds to the end of time.... at least to the end of our time....

Gardening, a hobby

At least gardening will make us walk, bend, and move. These are basic movements that everyone has to get used to, to get muscle, blood and heart to their optimum. Some are lucky where they have to move around and climb up stairs while working. Some just sit on the chair throughout with slight movements of fingers at the keyboard.

Gardening allows limbs to function as it was designed, to bring both of us around the garden, doing things what a hobby gardener would normally do.
