What surprised me the most, was how well behaved my kids were.  Christopher immediately found someone to latch on to, my nephew’s fiance.  She’s adorable and she’s studying to be an elementary teacher, so she really had a way with him.  The only thing was, he was very sad to see her go.  He really has a tough time saying goodbye sometimes.  Allie was also surprisingly good, but my 10 year old neice was a huge help in keeping her occupied.  We don’t get to see my sister’s kids very often, so they were really excited to see each other.  She had brought Allie a whole suitcase of “dress up” closes.  Let’s just say, I had one really happy little girl.  She’s still playing with them and is so cute carrying her little suitcase around.  I also got two huge bags of “hand-me-downs” in size 5 and 6.  So at least, I won’t have to worry about buying a bunch of school clothes for her this fall.

So yeah, although things were hectic at times, I’m so glad we got to see each other and celebrate my dad’s birthday.  Definitely a day we will all never forget.

The average school-age child who packs a lunch for school generates 67 pounds of waste per school year. That works out to 18,760 pounds of lunch waste for just one average-size elementary school… so what can families do to reduce that waste? Here are a few tips for packing a greener lunchbox this fall:

1. Replace paper napkins with cloth versions.
2. Pack stainless-steel utensils instead of using disposable plastic.
3. Use reusable drink containers instead of disposable juice boxes, juice pouches, cans, and plastic bottles.
4. Avoid using plastic wraps, plastic bags, wax-paper bags, and aluminum foil - opt for Tupperware instead.
5. Cut down on packaging waste by purchasing foods in larger containers that you can recycle at home rather than buying many smaller packaged products.
6. Choose lunch boxes or backpacks over paper or plastic bags.

My brother and his wife invited us over to their house for a cookout, which was a relief to me, because that way I didn’t have to worry about cooking or getting the house ready for company.  I know that sounds bad, but hey, I’m a mom of four small children, dang it!  I need a break! Anyway, my brother’s kids are grown and out of the house, so they don’t have to worry about cleaning after children under the age of 6, if you know what I mean?  We were told to just bring ourselves and couple bags of chips and dip.  And I said, “Hey, that’ll work for me!”  The kids want to go swimming afterwards and later this evening, was thinking of taking the them to our annual fireworks display on the river, so it should be a busy day!
