Mazda Furai concept, you see, it's a concept for a Le Mans series racecar; that sport has a very niche following in the U.S. What's cool about the Furai is that it's a wild-looking racecar that was designed to actually race.

This concept can navigate a track at racing speeds, and the design is even functional for aerodynamics. The engine is a rotary one, like the one in the RX-8.

The Furai is the fifth and final 'Nagare' car, an unexpected addition to van den Acker's 'natural flow' big idea. Car design doesn't get much more philosophical than this, but at heart it's actually very simple. Says Laurens, "It's really important that we create some cars that end up on an eight-year old kid's bedroom wall. People don't dream enough any more."

The first 'Nagare' car - helpfully called Nagare - appeared at the 2006 Los Angeles show, yet despite its wild appearance, it was quickly upstaged by the Ryuga, Hakaze and Taiki (the one with the 'outrider' wheels) that followed. Now the Furai's here. Mazda, purveyor of well-engineered but frequently inoffensive automotive product, has hijacked every major motor show in the last two years.

After presenting three ground-breaking concept vehicles during the 2005-2006 global auto show season – Sassou, Senku and the Kabura, which won Detroit Motor Show’s esteemed Aesthetics and Innovation Award at the 2006 North American International Auto Show – the 2007-2008 Auto Show Season continues to keep energy levels brimming with the introduction of Mazda’s design and surface language for future Zoom-Zoom vehicles. The new surface language called Nagare (pronounced “na-ga-reh”) was revealed at this year’s Greater Los Angeles International Auto Show and is the first of a series of design concepts that Mazda will showcase this global auto show season, including Los Angeles, Detroit and Tokyo.

Under the direction of Mazda’s new global design director, Laurens van den Acker, the challenge given to the team was to invent a novel means of registering motion in vehicles whether they’re moving or still. Nagare, which means flow in Japanese, achieves that goal while also signaling a fresh design direction for future Mazda vehicles.

Mazda Kiyora Concept in Paris Auto Show

The debut of the Mazda Kiyora took eco-boasting to new highs -- or lows, depending on your prospective. Among its numerous and highly suspicious-sounding features: roof rails that channel rainwater into an onboard purification system which then feeds water bottles between the front seats, a dashboard partially made of carbon for scrubbing the incoming air of toxins, and an onboard CO2 meter that delivers a real-time estimation of the Kiyora's carbon footprint.

Back on Planet Earth, the Kiyora would be powered by a 1.3-liter gasoline engine connected to a six-speed automatic. The engine's use of direct injection, dual sequential valve timing and variable valve lift make it one of Mazda's most efficient engines ever. There's also a Smart Idle Stop system that shuts down the engine at stoplights and an advanced catalytic converter that uses nanotechnology to filter even the smallest particles from the exhaust. The Kiyora is also surprisingly small, with an overall length that's nearly 4 inches shorter than the subcompact Mazda 2.

The all-new Mazda RX-8 is one of the most ingenious cars to be designed in years. Its small (but powerful) rotary engine allows the unique configuration of four doors and four seats. The wheelbase and overall length are shorter than a sports coupe yet there is more legroom in the rear, and the weight distribution is a perfect 50-50 for balanced handling.
Mazda says its Miata has recently become the best-selling sports car of all time. It hopes to build on that success with the groundbreaking RX-8. It's intended to be a car for a new generation, while also satisfying the legion of existing Mazda rotary fans, who have been left wanting ever since Mazda stopped importing the RX-7 into the U.S. in 1995 after selling more than 500,000 of them between 1979 and 1995. When you consider that the excellent RX-7 cost about $40,000 in 1995, the technologically superior new RX-8 looks like a steal as the sporty six-speed manual retails for $26,680

The RX-8 is not only all-new, but a unique sports car. Its four-seat, four-door configuration is an original design that works. The rotary engine is super smooth, simple, high-revving and almost indestructible, although it's not strong on mid-range acceleration. It's complemented by a beautiful six-speed gearbox and great brakes.
It may be argued that the difference between a sports car and sports coupe (such as the Infiniti G35) is semantic, so Mazda's claim to be the first and only true four-seat sports car is stretching things a bit. No matter what you call the RX-8, it's a great car with an innovative approach and admirable engineering.

Mazda Premacy's Review

Based on the 323 platform and using the same 92kW 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine as the popular hatch, Premacy rests on a 50mm longer wheelbase and gains much in the way of overall height (160mm) and weight (170kg in manual form).

The big deal is cleverness. Like the MPV, the Premacy has three lightweight bucket seats across the rear seat, each of which folds, tumbles and can be removed to increase cargo room.

The front passenger seatback also tilts forward, enabling items of up to 2.6m in length to fit inside.

Mazda has typically found a good blend of safety and attention-grabbing equipment to justify the premium pricetag, including air-conditioning, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, remote locking, single-slot CD stereo, dual airbags, electric mirrors and windows, velour seat trim, rear security blind and three-point seatbelts and headrests for all occupants.

Suspension is by MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link configuration at the rear. The steering is an engine-speed sensing power-assisted rack and pinion system.

Despite the compact packaging, a full-size 15-inch spare wheel is also provided.

DRIVE IMPRESSIONS

Mazda executives admit there will be a certain number of Astina buyers keen to trade in their traditional hatch for one with more space and flexibility.

The headroom is enormous, the areas of glass expansive, visibility from the driver's seat excellent and the seating arrangements certainly smarter than your average five-door.

But 323 buyers would be fooling themselves if they expected the same passenger car quality in the driving experience.

Developing 92kW of power at 6000rpm and 163Nm of torque at 4000rpm, the 1.8-litre engine is hamstrung by the heftier kerb weight.

It will rev cleanly to its redline but shows little evidence of life under 3500 rpm and requires gearchanges at frequent intervals if the driver is to avoid mashing the right foot into the firewall.

We reckon Holden was right to wait for a 2.2-litre engine for its forthcoming - and wonderfully flexible - seven-seat Zafira.

The lightweight steering is fine around town and low-speed manoeuvres, aided by a good 10.8m turning circle, are a breeze.

However the steering lacks feedback and precision at higher speeds and will throw up a fair bit of kickback through the wheel if it hits ripples in a corner.

The ride is comfortable and absorbent, and relatively quiet save for wind noise off the front mirrors at freeway speed.

The handling properties are also good up to a point, though a degree of body movement through corners is always apparent.

The controls are user-friendly, storage spots plentiful, child seat anchorage points conveniently positioned behind the rear seats and the boot space useful, even when all seats are in place.

This is quite simply the best mini people-mover on the market - for now.

MAZDA has taken its sweet sports coupe and made it even more tasty when sampling its rich dynamics and rev-to-the-sky rotary engine. Among the many changes to the leading model of the Mazda sports car range, there is a frontal refresh, a new six-speed auto for two-pedal fans and a new GT model with enhanced suspension that gives those seeking a more focussed handling package a solution straight out of the box. The changes have come at a cost, though: the new RX-8 is marginally slower heavier and thirstier than its predecessor.

Previous Model

The revolutionary RX-8 marked Mazda’s return to rotary sports cars in this country after a four-year break and introduced a novel concept of a four-seat, four-door sports coupe - with unique (for a coupe) rear-hinged rear doors. With a six-speed manual transmission, the RX-8’s 13B rotary developed 177kW at 8200rpm and 211Nm at 5500rpm until 2006 when noise emissions requirements nobbled the power output to 170kW at 8200rpm. The four-speed auto had a lower power output of 141kW at 7500rpm (although produced more torque, with 220Nm at 5000rpm) primarily because the auto could not spin to the high revs possible with the rotary. Prices started at $56,170 as a six-speed manual, with the four-speed auto $830 extra.

When I have two children, I realised that we would need a much bigger car! Before I used Honda Ceilo matic 1996, it's nice car too, and I like this car very much. So found car with comford like my ceilo it very difficult. And difficult to find a car big enough to have three car seats in the back unless we wanted a 7-seater MPV.

Before I thinks so hard to buy this car, because people's opinion about this car, because branded of Mazda is not good in Indonesia. People said, Mazda is expensive car, because so hard for treatment, . But in our community, Mazda Jakarta , we so proud with our brand, MAZDA. So finally I bought 2nd hand Mazda Premacy 2002. Great value and the most reliable car I have ever had. Very comfortable to drive and parking it is a dream! Excellent family car.
