As we are now heading into the final week and a half of January, my trees are still up and turned on, decorations are still out. It feels hallow that they are still up, but I need to get healthy again before everything comes down. I love my trees, they still look just as beautiful as they did when they went up right after Thanksgiving, but as with the decor the time has come.

This past holiday season was a break from are usual holiday seasons, as we had to deal with the sudden loss of our cat Sidney, and my son's depression from losing Sidney who was his best friend. It threw everything into a loop, and we didn't even finish decorating until Christmas Eve, just a few hours before our guest showed up.

I feel like I missed the holiday season this year, and everything that goes with it. The shopping didn't get started until Dec. 16, we started and finished on that one day, 13 hours in the mall. We usually are 95% done by December 1, so that goes into the mix of the "lost" holiday season.

To me Christmas is about the little things, the joy of going to the stores and oooooing and ahhing over their decor and seeing things we would love to add. Seeing the lights around town. Watching our favorite movies and shows.

I am already looking forward to the holiday season 2015, and the little things that go with it.

The smell of tinsel garland being warmed by a C7 lightbulb, it is such a great Christmas scent.
Those festive commercials, the planning, the happiness and joy. I just want to be able to fully enjoy it. We are even going to try to make a Christmas visit to NYC this year, I have always wanted to go there. I cannot wait until later this year.

Christmas 2014, you were a fun but seemingly overlooked holiday to us. You snuck up on us before we realized it. You were beautiful, as you usually are, but I feel it is finally time to put you to bed. we loved you and you're music, and your warm lights in the cold nights did bring out the smiles.

Goodnight, Christmas sleep well my friend, I cannot wait to see you again.

I just wanted to take out time today to wish every a very Merry Christmas I hope your Christmas was a great as mine.

I am at the office. There is nothing going on right now and it's very quiet. I think everyone has a combination Christmas and New Year's hangover.

I am on my company's calendar putting in for my Thanksgiving and Christmas vacation right now before anyone else even thinks about it.

This Christmas was the best ever! Despite the fact that I sprained my ankle on Christmas Eve, ever spent Christmas Eve in the hospital, not fun. I was able to make my Christmas dinner and side dishes. I don't know what happened but everyone raved about how delicious everything was at dinner and after dinner for 3 hours while we sat around opening presents, eating pumpkin pie and drinking gallons of coffee.

The next day they all called or sent me a text letting me know how great the food was.

Now here is my problem how am I ever going to re-created the Christmas dinner of 2014! I am going to review what I did and I'll let you know 2 seconds from now when Christmas comes to town how great the Christmas dinner of 2015 turns out.

Merry Christmas and Happy 2015

Special Post Day #4

"So the legend of Saint Nicholas is a lovely and delectable myth, the last living relic of the vanishing world of dreams. The fairies are gone. No little children or maidens watch any longer through the ardent summer nights to catch some echo of the songs. The witches are gone...Santa Claus alone still lingers with us. For Heaven's sake, let us keep him as long as we can.
There are some excellent people who are scrupulous about deceiving their children with such legendary nonsense. They are mistaken. The children learn to see soon enough, too clearly and too well, or to think they do. Ah, leave them at least one thrill of passionate mystery that may linger with them when the years begin to grow too plain and dull and bare. After all, in this universe of ignorance, anything may be true, even our dreams."-Gamaliel Bradford 1925

We are now two days away from the most magical time of the year, a time we all look forward to starting December 26 the year before. As our friend Ballcoach so eloquently put it, "Santa Claus is real."
In this season we have been looking forward to, I am a little hesitant to go through it as I usually do. My oldest is 9 years old, and I worry that this may be the last year that Santa Claus may exist for him. He was very skeptical last year, and a lot of questions were beginning to come. He would ask very vague questions, and we would answer how we could without ruining it for him. He wants to believe, you can see it, but I have a feeling that peer pressure is getting to him, and we will be telling him the everything sooner rather than later.

So this year let the magic flow, let Santa be the big guy to the children for as long as you can. This magic from my youth has made me such a lover of Christmas throughout my life that I want my kids to have that same feeling that I still get, the smile I get as Christmas gets closer. That feeling that fills your heart during this time of year. The warm smiles from strangers. The anticipation of Christmas morning that makes it so hard to fall asleep, and wakes you up before the sun comes up. Christmastime is nearly upon us, the build up of the season is culminating, get the decorations out, get the lights out. Make some cookies, and eat them as Santa would. Most of all share it with your loved ones.

Make the most of this season, enjoy it, and try not to let it go too fast. I look forward to celebrating this time of year with all of you again. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Facing Anti-Christmas Feelings

I'm not one of those who buys in much to the hysteria of the war on Christmas. But I do get concerned with the growing sentiment that is anti-Christmas.

My wife says it could be that since I've turned 50 I have become a lot more sensitive to the attitudes and attributes of younger generations.

She is a pre-school teacher and she loves kids. This week she was transporting a large van load of five year old children who delighted in singing Christmas songs. They took their spontaneous Christmas spirit and together they sang a simple song of Christmas back in the classroom.

Unlike my wife, who delighted in this little pre-season display of merriment, the two other teachers, both considerably younger, did not.

In fact, they made an effort to get the kids to sing something else, saying, "It's too early to sing Christmas songs!"

My wife was aghast. Who shuts up a five year old when singing?

A five year old! An age group prone to singing Christmas year round, anyway.

Of course, a conversation ensured but Sandy was genuinely taken back by the hostility of the attitude against Christmas.

These were Christian women, by the way. One, an unmarried student and the other a mid-30s mother.

What is happening?

It's media, folks. The media harps and harps and harps on Christmas too early.

Look at what you see about Christmas in America in the media. Do a Google search of news posted in late October and early November. The anti-Christmas sentiment is outrageous.

Then take a look at what is happening in the UK. This week the media is celebrating the release of annual Christmas commercials. Department stores, grocery stores and even manufacturers compete for "who has the best Christmas commercial" in the UK and folks there look forward to it as a tradition.

It is fascinating to see these contrasts.

But I worry about the sharp attitude of those who don't like the early Christmas. Read the editorials. They seethe.

No, it's not me being an old man.

It's folks who just don't understand Christmas in the first place.

And there are many of them.

Nearly 18 months ago we interviewed Mick Foley on the Merry Podcast about a movie project he was involved in titled I am Santa Claus, a documentary showing what some guys who portray Santa are like when they arent playing Santa.

That movie is now finished and making the rounds at film festivals.

In the course of the past year and a half a steady stream of professional Santas have made their way to pay homage at the altar of Mick Foley and only now, after the movie has come out and has been seen by a few, are they raising the alarm.

The movie shows guys whose only commonality is their resemblance to Santa Claus chubby, bearded, white hair, etc. From there they diverge wildly. One is gay, one gets drunk, etc.

In the interview for the podcast I asked Foley if he was prepared for a possible negative backlash from the movie for showing these things. Foley was diplomatic and admitted that maybe the movie topic wasnt for everyone.

As the Santa world has wrapped itself up in Mick Foley the past 18 months and the inevitable reaction has ensued worse than I anticipated, by the way it was inevitable that several from the Santa world would email me to ask Mr. Westover, why dont you care?

Well, I will tell you.

First of all, Santa: nobody cares who you are.

Thats a lesson you never learn.

It has been by sad experience that we have seen a few within the Santa community that can never get past the point that what people love most is the character of Santa Claus not the guy inside playing him.

Ive often wondered that about the people inside the Goofy costume at Disneyland. Millions of people get their pictures taken on vacation with these characters and they never know the soul within.

At Disney, great care is taken to train these people how to act and how to provide the experience Disney guests expect. They are shown how to set themselves aside in order to make that happen.

In the world of Santa there are schools but honestly not everyone gets training on how to be Santa. In fact, sadly, some think they can just dye the hair, grow the beard and put on the suit and people will think they are Santa Claus.

Some pull it off for a while but the cracks inevitably show. No, not that Santa leans this way or that way politically, and not because Santa picks his nose or is in other ways human. The cracks come when the guy in the suit acts more like himself and less like the charitable character of Santa.

Second, when it comes to Santa, regular folks want the vanilla milkshake. They dont care about anything special about the guy inside. They just want the picture, the memory and the experience. Hold the relish. Leave off the cherry. No frills. Just give me the goods.

They just want Santa.

So, to answer your question, no, Im not upset about Mick Foleys movie.

Im not going to waste my time seeing the movie. I learned enough from the preview and from talking with Foley that the project was not for me.

And Im not holding my breath that the reaction from the Christmas community overall about the movie will be anything different than my own.

People just dont care.

And why?

Because they didnt care, really, when the other Santa documentaries came out either. They Wore the Red Suit was a good movie and I enjoyed it.

But the Santa-loving world didnt see it, wont see it, and likely wont ever see it.

They wont see much of Foleys movie either.

And thats because the guy inside doesnt matter.

Hes supposed to disappear. Hes suppose to serve silently. Anonymously.

Hes supposed to be Santa.

Ive spent a lot of time over the past couple of decades defending Santa. And as I have come to know many within the Santa community I have come to respect so many who put on that suit and serve their communities.

But as my hair has turned white, and my beard has grown, I too, being a big guy, have taken on the image of Santa, albeit without the intention of ever putting a child on my knee. I just look like the guy naturally.

And Ill tell you: the occasional reaction I get from the people waving at me from passing cars (which just delights my teenage children) to the now-and-then child who approaches me in public and says, Hi Santa! well, it scares me to death.

It scares me because I feel a deep sense of responsibility.

I have come to love Santa like few people ever do and that, I suppose, has to do with the fact that I work Christmas 365 days a year, Ive studied and continue to study Christmas and Santa history far more than a normal adult, and that Santa still lives and has a presence in my home and family even though my children are far beyond the age of belief in Santa.

Santa is just a sacred thing to me.

I wouldnt dream of ever being Santa. I couldnt pull it off and do it justice. I admit I cannot do what so many of these guys in the red suit do.

I dont have the skills and I honestly believe it takes real skills to be Santa Claus.

In a way, those are the same reasons I wont see Foleys movie.

I know the guys hes talking about are going to let me down, that Ill likely get upset, that Ill probably shoot off my mouth about it and shake my fist at the sky over it.

And in the end, thats wrong. Let Foley have his movie. His movie isn't about Santa -- it is about a few guys who sometimes play Santa.

Maybe his point is that they pull it off in spite of themselves.

When you see Santa this year just shake his hand, look him in the eye, and say thank you.

Dont worry about his politics. Dont concern yourself with his sexuality. Leave alone any thoughts of how the guy inside thinks, acts, feels or opines.

Watch how he is Santa. And then thank him for rising above himself in the service of others.

The real St. Nicholas worked in the dark of night under the cloak of disguise. His concerns were only for others.

He didnt need a movie. He didnt work lines. He just got the job done.

There are real lessons in that.

I can't get around this feeling.

I more than hinted at it in the current episode of the Merry Podcast. But as the days go by and I see the headlines and watch the news, I just cannot escape it. Something about this Christmas will be different.

I have no hard evidence. In fact, the signs are pointing to a "better" Christmas than we have experienced the last couple of years, if you listen to the economic forecasters.

The tabulated results of our annual Christmas survey are coming in and while we're still a week or more away before I can release those results I don't really need to see them. This is just something I feel and I don't think the survey is going to support it.

As I go about the busy work preparing for another season my routine has not changed. I'm having a great time preparing for the season ahead. I so look forward to all we're doing and all we have planned.

But something is different. Something is up.

I'm not pessimistic by nature. I am a big believer in my fellow man. I have every reason to think that way, and much of that comes from the generosity and good will I witness season after season here on MMC.

I see dark clouds and I have a deep sense of foreboding.

I pray I'm wrong. I hope these are just the mindless rumblings of a worried father concerned for the future for his children.

Aside from the headlines I see weird things happening I haven't seen before.

It takes six servers to operate the sites of the Merry Network. On each of them especially over the course of the past month we have seen epic attempts to hack the sites.

I don't understand it. We don't sell anything. We don't even store sensitive information. Yes, on this site and others we have usernames and passwords. But we don't store credit card data, we don't ask for private information, and there is nothing over real monetary value in what we do online. There is no hidden treasures locked up in our databases.

Usually you can tell what a hacker wants by what they target. Login pages are notorious for hacker activity.

But lately I'm seeing attempts to intrude and take control through any part of the website they can find.

I'm certain these are bots and not humans. A human could come to our site and see that we don't sell anything or deal in commerce. A bot can't. A bot just wants to take control of the server for nefarious purposes.

And that concerns me. If they are doing this to our humble servers what are they doing elsewhere.

Home Depot just reported a breach. Ebay has been down all day to day. Facebook was again offline for a while. These are giant corporate structures with busy, complex websites staffed by thousands of engineers who know what they are doing.

Apple, of course, is in the news because of the releases of explicit photos of celebrities. They claim their system wasn't breached but that each of these celebrities accounts were hacked because they used bad passwords.

That doesn't wash with me. That's just poor design.

When a bot or a hacked tries guessing schemes to get into an account you can easily see those efforts. Apple bears some great responsibility for this event.

What I'm saying is that there are some nasty attempts to hijack computer networks, even in our blessed little world.

I've never seen it at this level. It is relentless, costly and destructive. If they do get through...well, frankly, I don't think we could afford to come back.

Now that's not pessimism. That's just the way it is, folks.

Maybe this is all part of the annual build up to the 9/11 anniversary.

But I wonder if we won't be looking back on Christmas 2014 some day the way we look back on Christmas 2001.

I can never forget that season. It was a heart ripper.

It was different.

Different in a way I think this Christmas might be as well.

As I am close to entering middle agedness, the thoughts of my childhood are so distant and impossible sometimes.
If I could go back in time to one point of my life and relive it would definitely be a Christmas in the early eighties.
I look back at that time and all I see is a conglomerate of memories of those wonderful Christmases.
I cannot recall a single Christmas as an individual memory, there was always the tree, it was in a different spot each year, there was the waking up in the pre-dawn hours. I know I got from Santa one year "Donkey Kong" for the Atari 2600, another a slot car race set, and yet another a model train set, but what years I don't know.
The thought of reliving one of those years with my mother alive, my father sober, and my parents together would be the biggest Christmas present anyone could get, my eyes fill with tears just thinking of that. The gifts under the tree would be a fun moment but to feel the love of my long lost parents would just be a beautiful moment.

What is it about Christmas that makes those memories feel so Rockwellian? It seems so perfect looking back now, nothing was ever wrong on Christmas when you were a kid. Now as an adult, it is do we have the money? Do the kids have the same amount of gifts? (God forbid if you screw that one up) Will work let me have the time off? Too many things to worry about now. I love the season for so many things, but the magic of childhood cannot be replaced.

Just one more time, 24 hours, that is it. Let me feel that one last time. All that is left is those memories now, and the only way to return is through my dreams, which have happened often lately. Why after all these years have I come to dwell on this?

Christmas past, don't forget me.
