A recent post at Bargaineering made me think about pulling my annual FREE Credit Report. Here is a brief history as well as a step by step on getting my report. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act you are entitled to receive a credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies; Experian, Equifax, and Transunion, at least once a year. You could space that out over the year and get one report every four months. What you aren’t going to get is you credit SCORE, they are going to try to charge you for that. What you will see is the actual report that is used to calculate the score. So how can you get your report? According the FTC you can call 1-877-322-8228, use their request form, or request it on line at annualcreditreport.com. The website is easy to use and doesn’t take a lot of time

Step 1: Select Your State

Step 2: Fill out your personal information, be prepared to fork over your Name, Birthday, Social Security Number, Current Address, and possibly your previous address.

Step3: Select which bureaus you want your report from, I only selected one so I can pull from the others later.

Step 4: You are transferred to a site owned and maintained by the selected bureau.

Step 5: If using Equifax they ask you to confirm the “Personal” Information

Step 6: They ask you standard information regarding your credit to verify you are who you are, if you have ever signed up for an online bank account you have been through this.

Step 7&8: Avoid the sales pitch, they will try to sell you your credit score. You dont need it to verify nothing strange is on your credit. If you want it, it will cost you around $8.00.

Step 9: Relish in the joy of viewing your credit history… for free. I guess this could be sad for you as well.
