Thanks to a klout perk I was introduced to Dollar Shave Club

Thoughts on the Products

First a little history… I hate shaving! Some may call it lazy but I don’t shave unless I am having clients that day other wise I’ll go days with out shaving (went two weeks once). The price of razors also contributes to that. I’ll make a razor last a month sometimes (painful but true) and then buy the cheapest I can find (just as painful).

My klout perk had the Dollar Shave Club send me a razor handle, (4) four blade razors and their shaving butter. The day it arrived it so happen that I needed to run a razor across my face and it had been awhile.

I must say I was expecting cheap razors. I was quite surprised when I held the handle in my hand and it felt solid, well built. Razors as well were solid construction and work very well. Along with the shave butter it was one of the better shaves I have had.

The Club

The club offers 3 different razor levels, a twin blade, 4 blade , and a ‘why’ 6 blade. Monthly fees depend on which razor you wish, $1, $6, or $9 respectively, plus shipping. Although I wasn’t charged shipping on my first order when I joined. It was quite Simple to sign up (even sign up with Facebook) then you receive your razors in the mail each month. Your first order will include your handle at no charge.

Figure normally you will pay up to $15 for 5 razors or first time around $10 for handle and 2 razors. Then you have the time and hassle to go out and get them when needed. Ok you normally you will get them when you are out shopping any way, but this way you dont have to even think about it. They just show up and a whole lot cheaper as well. You can also add the shaving butter to your order when you run out.

Want to upgrade/downgrade your razor… no problem, just log in and click a button. If your facial hair is not as shaggy you can even change to every other month if you wish.

This is one of those “Why didn’t I think of this” ideas that should do well. At least I hope they do because as long as they are around I won’t be shopping for a razor again! Maybe I’ll shave a little more often now…

If you wish to try them out please use my link here Dollar Shave Club. Yes its an affilate link, I earn a small credit towards my razor purchases, so help me keep my face clean and smooth while you do the same

Growing this way it is best to use dechloronated water and the easiest way to do this is to use rain water or if from the tap let it set around for at least 24 hours.

So I started doing researchIn building my own water storage system and this lead me to rain water collection.

Free Water Being Wasted

As I did my morning walk I was looking around at homes and all the rain gutters just flow into the yard or worse into the street. This is a lot of water that can be used for plant watering without driving up your water bill. I’m sure we all have some sort of house plants around or a small garden and keeping them alive is adding to your water bill. Don’t know about you but ours gets in the neighborhood of $200 every other month. Hmmm maybe I should just start wearing my clothes longer.

If your roof is 1,000 sq ft (this is a small home) and a nice little 1″ rain storm comes along guess how much water you can get? The answer is about 625 gallons! Now if you captured that it would take care of the average homes house plants for quite a while.

Build Your Own Collection System

Their are commercial collection systems of different sizes and cost. I saw one at Lowes the other day for $120 and it was about 50 gallons I think. Saw another system for $400 for 205 gallons at a landscape store.

How about making your own for under $20? Worst case maybe $30-40 for a 55 gallon and the ability to expand it. You just need to get a hold of a 55 gallon drum which I found out you can get typically for free from car washes (clean it very well) or soda bottling plants or other locations. They use them and just throw them out so they may be happy to give them to you. The worst case, you can buy them for generally $25 or less.

Get a few PVC parts to connect several drums together, add a valve then connect your rain gutters to them and you are now collecting your rain water! The beauty is that you can add more capacity if you need it for a few bucks!

If you follow my other log http://hydroponicsiscool.com I’ll soon have a video and post about building one as I construct my water storage system. Mine will have some barrels for collecting rain (if it ever does again) and the others for holding tap water to naturally dechloronate before going into my hydroponic systems.

Just wanted to perk your imagination on ways you can save money on water if you like to garden or just have a couple house plants.

Let me fill you in. I needed to put in a shelf in the back of the greenhouse for buckets (which are 12″ wide). I could go one of three routes.

1. The cheapest would be to just get a 4′x8′ sheet of plywood, muscle it into the truck and cut it when I got home. This also would have given me a lot of left overs.

2. Lowes also has pre-cut plywood at 2′x4′. A little but more in price but I could make the shelves 2′ deep and have less cutting, easier to handle and less left over.

3. Buy (2) 1″x6″x10′ pine boards. The most expensive route but no cutting, no left overs and nice and easy to load.

Needless to say I went with option 3. I don’t mind paying a bit more to make my life easier. Yes I have the tools to cut plywood myself but that’s a lot of work to lug the plywood (perhaps with a helper) measure, cut pieces, etc (maybe I’m just lazy). My time and lately my health and well being are more important to me and if I can save a little of both by spending a bit more on something I’m gonna do it!

I also dont wash my own car or do my own auto repairs amongst other things. Guess I’m not that frugal afterall.

What about you? Do you do things yourself to save every dime you can? Or do you spend a little extra for convenience?

This means at least 2 if not 3 trips a week to my local health food store or farmers market.this gets time consuming, costs cost and the veggies are not cheap. This lead me to thinking about doing the backyard garden again, except for a few minor things:

Having to clean the backyard

Having to put in raised beds

Having to buy or condition soil

Planting

Weeding

Bugs

Bending over a lot

Gophers

I saw this Tower Garden that used hydroponics but ouch $500. So after doing research on it online and I was hooked on building my own.

What the Hell is Hydroponics?

Hydroponics basically is growing plants without your traditional soil. Using water, liquid nutrients and sometimes an inert media to hold the plant. There are many different types of systems and you can build a small basic one for less than $100.

Of course with my OCD small and basic is out of the question. Looking online I got a few ideas and combining a few together I built my first system, a combo hydroponics/aeroponics rails using 8′ vinyl fence post from Lowes. Aeroponics is using sprayers or misters to spray the plant roots with the nutrient solution. This oxygenates the mixture more and is great for the plants. Often resulting in faster growth and greater yield.

The system is recirculating so I just check the Ph and water level once in a while and it takes care of itself. Every 2-3 weeks I drain the reservoir and add new nutrient solution.

Benefits of Hydro:

No weeding

No soil

No remembering to water daily

Uses less water because there is no run off

Faster growth

Greater yields

It’s been said tastier fruits as well

What Can You Grow?

Well the most known crop of course is that unmentionable weed, but besides that you can grow just about anything. In the first system I have peppers, bush cucumbers, bush tomatoes, Brussel sprouts and strawberries. Being a lean-to vertical system it can do 32 plants in a 3′ x 8′ area. I built a second system with smaller pots for our leafy greens. Spinach, lettuce, kale and herbs which we are starting all from seed? It can do 75 plants in a 3′ x 10′ area! If you can grow it in soil you can grow it without as well. May be more difficult for your root plants such as carrots, radish and onions, but it can be done.

What’s Next?

Did I mention my OCD? Hydroponics is great for indoor growing but the lights are pretty expensive and in San Diego the sun is out pretty much 80% of the time but it can get cold. So I’m building a green house This way we can grow pretty much year round! I also have plans for a Dutch bucket system for the vining tomatoes, cucumbers broccoli and cauliflower. also a completely vertical tower system(s) for strawberries. I’m hoping to become self sufficient as far as our greens and veggies go. Spending the money do for the systems which can be used over and over again, just have to buy the nutrient solution. Found a hydroponic store around the corner for that but you can buy it online. It seems pricey but it goes a long way.

I’m also looking at building a water reservoir that will hold water to be dechlorinated, then will automatically top off the nutrient reservoirs by float valves. Making it that much easier to maintain the systems!

Grow Anywhere!

Hydroponic systems can be built as small or as large as you wish, outdoors or indoors. Making it a great way to grow your food no matter where you live or any climate. Live where it snows, then have a grow room or just a small tub system in the corner. Same thing if you live in an apartment, you can have a small tub growing tomatoes and lettuce in the kitchen or maybe you have a balcony or small deck you can but a system outside. The internet is full of ideas and plans for building hydroponic systems for very little money (or you can be like me and go crazy). The biggest expense in starting is the tools if you dont have them. Hey if your local and need some help or would like a system built for you let me know and I’ll give you a quote!

Stay tuned, I’m thinking seriously of starting another blog on this so I can do updates on everything and more details on the builds

Apparently all normal, so he says the last ANA test was a false positive (2 in a year though?). So the good news that everything says no autoimmune disorder. So the docs diagnosis at this time is Fibromyalgia.

What is Fibromyalgia?

I still have some doubts about it, from what I have read I don’t meet all the requirements, but my mom has it as well and she didn’t have all the markers early on either.

Fibromyalgia is considered a syndrome instead of a disorder or disease. Apparently the joints and muscles are all fine it’s just that my nerves and body are telling me different. So most of the time I am in pain or sore (or both) making life difficult. On top of extreme fatigue, dizziness and shortness of breath. Anxiety can also be a part if it so that would explain a few things.

Another part is sleep. It explains why even if I sleep for 8 hours I’m still exhausted. It prevents you from going to the deep restful sleep (not to mention the waking up every couple of hours)

Whats Next

So the starting treatment is to switch my Zoloft to Savella. Does some of the same things with Serotonin but also turns down the sensitivity to pain and soreness. Of course that means another 2 weeks getting used to it like I did with Zoloft and Lexapro, along with the fun side effects. On top of that I get Ambien to help with the sleeping. Between the two I hope to get some relief. Oh and insurance only covers about half of it leaving me to pay $82 of it, I guess this is because its still new (only approved in 2009) and no generic yet. I’ll have to look into it because thats a bit steep.

Beside the new wonder drugs it’s life as before, Taking it easy and resting often. Continue with the walks and some other form of mild exercise. Funny thing is that even though you feel like crap and not up to exercising you push through it (just don’t over do it) and it actually helps. Total inactivity is the worse thing you can do, or not do I suppose.

Did a little more reading last night and many people with it are sensitive to heat and the symptoms get worse when the temp rises, describes me perfectly. Thankfully its been cool the past couple weeks and I hope that trend continues! Here’s looking forward to a mild summer please

Searching for the right pair of headphones can seem like an epic, never-ending quest. It doesn’t have to be that way, though.

There are certain things you have to think about before charging into a store and picking out a pair of headphones that look cool or ‘have great bass’. If you’re looking for the real deal, you might have to sell some of your stuff to save up – visit www.musicmagpie.com to flog your old tech.

Decide between earbuds or headphones

This is the first step. Each have their own advantages, but ultimately, it’s up to your specific needs. Earbuds are great if you like keeping your head light and you want to move around a bit while listening to music. They are very portable and the more expensive ones offer pretty good sound isolation.

On the other hand, headphones take up more space, but enjoy the advantage of having bigger and more resilient cords that won’t get damaged easily, like with earbud cords. Some of the more expensive types have replaceable cords, too.

Lower your expectations if you’re on a budget

This isn’t strictly true all the time – you do find affordable but durable headphones sometimes – but generally speaking, the more you pay, the more you get. Better engineering means better sound.

Some audiophiles still swear by their headphones from the 70s, simply because they have lasted that long, delivering consistently good sound.

Be careful with sound leaks and isolation

This is quite important if you’re going to be moving around with your headphones. When you’re trying them out at the store, make sure you have a friend with you to tell you if they can hear the sound leaking out. This can be irritating to others when you’re travelling on public transport, for instance.

Earbuds are better in general for preventing this, as they create a seal inside your ear. The larger headphones that completely cover your ears also work well at creating a sealed environment.

Choose according to your needs

If you want a pair of headphones to plug into your home hi-fi, you probably want to buy a pair of Grados, as sound leaking doesn’t really matter, since you’re inside the house. On the other hand, if you want a pair of headphones to listen to music while you’re jogging, get a pair that will cling to your ears better than others.

So I decided to play along going of their lists and showing what I do and don’t pay for in my life

Here were all 27 things I DO pay for from their lists

ATM Fees — Well I don’t pull cash out but I use my check card everywhere so there are some fees here and there

Clothes at retail prices — I buy clothes oh so rarely, but when I do I don’t go looking for sales.

Paid apps — if I like it yep (angry birds, magic puzzles…)

Pre-chopped fruit — I get the big bags of frozen fruits for my smoothies.

New cars — Not planning on it but when I do yes. Just like the new car smell

TiVo, RoKu, Apple TV — Yep, have Apple TV. Purchased season pass to Doctor Who and the wife pays for the Netflix.

Photo printing — Well I am a photographer. Mainly a business expense.

Fast food — Even though I work at eating more healthy I do the occasional Rubios or Chick-Fil-A.

Single serving smoothie drinks – Love Jamba Juice, that’s all I’m saying.

CDs or MP3s — iTunes rarely, mostly listen to free Spotify.

Movie tickets — Very rarely, has to be damn good like a Marvel movie or Star Trek. Rest I wait for pay per view or Netflix

Frozen dinners — I do still get a few of the healthy types but its gettin more and more rare.

Boxed rice — I get these great rice packets, 3 minutes in the microwave I get jasmine and the brown rices.

Candles or any type of “home scents” – Not allowed to at home, but at the studio I love apple-cinnamon

Regular hair cuts — Eh not so regular

Salad dressing — Definitely needed

Car washes — Few times a year. Actually really needs one now. I’d rather use my time for other things.

Lottery tickets — Every now and then. I can dream right?

Bottled water — Oh yea. All I drink is water (besides smoothies) and I hate our faucet water (even filtered). I love Perrier cause I miss the little bubbles so I’m always buying it or the sprouts version in 2 liter bottles. Non bubbly I love Dasani

Oil changes — For sure – no time to change myself, nor any desire.

Body wash or hand/body lotion — Yep, gotta smell pretty

Trash bags — YES! How can you not??

Name brand anything I can find a store brand for instead — I don’t go looking for store brands (wife does) especially for things like NyQuil or Advil, I’m afraid the generic just wont do the same.

Disposable cleaning wipes — Yes, we do have a baby!

Prescription antibiotics — Umm… if it makes me feel better, yes!

Brown bags for lunches — I don’t, but my wife does.

Still alive, sorry I havent been around. I think every blogger goes through spurts when they are to busy to post or just uninspired, me I just have had a lot of things on my mind lately and sorting through them.

Wealth

While February came out ok income wise, March has been slow again putting my mind to bills, debts and other money matters.

Most of my adult life has been thinking how can I make more money, how can I become wealthy. I have come to a conclusion in my middle to old age that I do not need that anymore. Now don’t get me wrong I am not foregoing money altogether but I have decided that if I earn enough for me and my family to be comfortable and not worry about the future, as well as putting some aside to take care of that future, I am happy. Anything else I can use to help others and will start giving a bit more charity wise and looking for ways to help others when I can.

Everything in the past has revolved around money and how to obtain more of it. Its time my life revolved around me and my family. No I’m not going all liberal, I still believe in each persons right to make as much and keep as much as they wish and most importantly to decide what they wish to do with it. Im just changing my mind on how much I need and what I will do with it.

Health

Health has really been on my mind as of late as the muscle soreness and fatigue has increased lately. I went to a specialist yesterday for autoimmune disorders and had a bunch more blood test taken. Now it’s a waiting game to see if I will have an answer or be moving on to the next round of guesses.

This is the main reason I have been thinking everything else over and looking at what is really important. I’m not worried about working all the time trying to make as much as I can. Been spending more time working on the house, making it nice and pleasant environment to live in. Taking evenings to spend time with the family and even just a simple drive to the mountains.

I’ve been working at making my environment and life simpler and stress free, and its been helping. I’ve defiantly been happier.

The Tardis

This has become my favorite show and <del>pastime</del> obsession. I’m talking about Doctor Who of course. When the reboot came out in 2005 I remember seeing a couple early episodes and it didn’t jump out at me. In January I had time on my hands so I started watching it on Netflix. Yes the first few episodes were like most series, took a bit to get into but I was hooked! After the Empty Child episode it just kept getting better and better. The show has made me laugh and it has made me cry. It has opened my eyes to a lot of life lessons as well. Now that I have watched them all to date I have to wait for new episodes like normal, and this sucks Since completing them all I have got my wife hooked and watched them all again with her, then my daughter got hooked and I have been doing the same again. Now I am re watching the spin off Torchwood with both of them as well.
New episodes start again Easter weekend and can hardly wait. Downside of canceling cable is that I have to wait an extra day for it to come out on iTunes.

If you haven’t seen this show I highly recommend it. Start with the 2005 season and stick through it. I’m now looking for all the classic episodes, did I mention that it has been around since 1963?

Well thats enough rambling. I do have a couple other posts in the works so I hope to have one out before summer

How have you been doing lately and whats your favorite show?

Did ya miss me? Used to be that I would always blog on my site A Frogs Diary when things took a turn to the dark side health wise (you can read more there if you want a history). My last post there was last August and since then I have been doing pretty good on the anxiety front. Last weekend I even took the family out for a drive to Julian (little old town in the mountains here). Past few years that was unheard of. Well I decided to just post here because my health is one of my streams and I dont think I want to many blogs anymore.

Yesterday for whatever reason anxiety decided to pay me a visit and it is here again this morning. I’m thinking that maybe it’s the weather and time of year. Past few years sprint is when it has reared up and the past few days I’ve been getting that feeling that it feels like before. With the weather warming up and all seems like the cycle is about to start again. I will say its not as bad as in the past, maybe each year it comes back a little weaker than before? Maybe in a few years ill be done with it It still is irritating I know its in my head that it wont directly hurt me but it makes it hard to get things done, and even harder to eat anything.

Could also,be a number of other things like cashflow worries or our local image competition next week. Who knows but I do have tools now to battle it. Been doing my walks again I the mornings, going to start up meditation again. I’m on the Zoloft still and have lorezapam as a back up. I’m still pushing through as best as I can to things done, just taking breaks often.

Fatigue is Becoming a Pain

On another front the muscle fatigue and exhaustion has not gone away and at times has gotten worse so I finally made another trip to the doctors which lead to another trip to the vampires for a round of blood tests (the head vampire knows me by name). Got the results yesterday and was not good news.

First of all I kind of expected this one. Cholesterol is back through the roof. My eating habits seemed to deteriorate as I was feeling better, Estradas Mexican food had become my friend again having bean and cheese and breakfast burritos quite often. Also muffins from sprouts and other goodies have crept in. So it’s back on a stricter diet to get the levels back down agin or its back to the statins which I would like to avoid.

The other news was that my ANA test was high again. If you recall I had a high test last year followed by a normal one 30 days later. The ANA test shows anti bodies in your system related to auto immune disorders, where your body’s defenses are attacking your own body. This can be anything from arthritis to lupas or a 100 or types. So since its another positive and with the symptoms it’s off to a specialist once I get the referral. I’m ok with it, just really would like a definitive answer and treatment for a change.

Time to drop off the kid at school and do my morning walk. I’ll try keeping you up to date as best I can

In the continuing effort to improve cashflow as income tightens I’m considering refinancing again. I did look into it late last year trying to use my VA benefits (read, no closing costs) but ran into an issue with wife’s credit report and they said there was nothing they could do. I alos applied with my credit union although I can’t remember if I put the wife on that one or not (think I did) and it was pre-approved but never went through with it because of the closing costs and points involved.

Round 2 Application

So I just applied again with the credit union, just me this time, and it spit out the different program options for me (not approved yet).

If I stayed with a traditional 30 year fixed I would have had 6 points and ended up with closing costs of $17,000, OUCH! I assume I could have rolled that into the loan but payments with taxes and insurance would have been close to where I am now, maybe saving $200 a month.

Next there where the ARM Loans, 7/1, 5/1 and 3/1. These basically start out at a very low rate and then after the first term of 7, 5 or 3 years the rate would be re-evaluated each year. Increases in the rates to never exceed 2% and lifetime to not exceed 6%

Where I’m at and Where to Go

Currently I am in a fixed loan at 6% with P&I payments at $1430. Dont have a traditional impound account and pay the insurance and taxes on my own. These equate to about another $350 a month.

If I go with with the 5/1 the rate starts at 2.5% making the P/I payment of about $980 which by the way I love or I could go for the 7/1 with rate of 2.75% and payment just a bit more at $1020. Either one would be great with a saving of at least $400 a month, just have to decide when I want that first rate jump.

We all know that rates are at an all time low, and realistically the will be going up. But… How high 5-7 years from now? With the cap the max it could go is 8.75% in 10 years (putting me in a worse position than now) but I can always refinance again right?

I know it’s best to lock in a low rate for the long haul, but I have to also look at realities of my current situation. I need to improve cashflow so that I stop using credit (another post for another day) and doing the APR loan will improve the current situation.

Well I’m at the doctors and he just came in so those are my thoughts for now. Guess I just wait for an answer on the application and see where we go from here.

What are your thoughts? I’m curious on what you would do or have done.
