by Charity-Lyn Gellar

If you suffer from panic and anxiety attacks, you’ve probably spent what seems like days in front of a computer searching for an alternative to common panic treatments. Have you had any luck? For the longest time I didn’t until I found a hidden gem of a concept.

I’ve been dealing with panic attacks since I had my first one nine years ago. At first I was on medication which did help, but left me feeling nauseous most of the time and very sleepy. For awhile I thought I would have to choose the lesser of two evils, and I was okay with dealing with the side-effects that come from panic medication. As time went by, I decided my panic was well enough that I could try coming off the medication, but shortly after the attacks returned.

That’s the problem with medication. It’s not really a cure, it’s a band-aid that only covers the problem, and never really solves it. Coping techniques are similar in that respect. They help you manage your attacks, but never really get to the source. Therapy can be very expensive, and those prescription bills can pile up month after month.

After searching for a really long time, I read about most of the natural cures. I tried St. John’s Wort, and other herbal remedies, but I really didn’t notice a difference. The attacks still came, and I was still anxious most of the time.

That’s when I discovered a concept that was so unique, after reading about it I felt: “This is it.” You see, for people that suffer from constant panic attacks, the biggest fear is actually having the panic attack itself. If you think about this as a cycle you can see how easy it is to be caught in it. You have an attack, fear having another, which just leads to having more. It’s that anxiety loop that traps us in a vicious circle.

So how do you break that loop? As simple of a concept as the anxiety loop is, it’s not as easy as it seems. The key is to use methods and techniques designed with that loop in mind. But if you are able to break that loop, you can diffuse a panic attack before it even begins.

by Hamza Davis

Authorities are reporting that the levels of hypertension being reported are changing and that trend levels are being reversed. The instance of hypertension, having been in decline over the past three decades is increasing.

In the United States of America there are a staggering oversupply of fifty million people over the age of six who are sufferers of steep blood pressure otherwise known as hypertension. There are very few diseases quite as sinister or fatal as high-priced blood pressure. The real danger with it is the unitary absence of any form of external ominous sign whatsoever.

After conducting a preliminary analysis of those suffering from high blood pressure then you would procure that 30 percent of those suffering from it are unitaryly unaware of its existence! It is a frightening fact that if high-priced blood pressure is ignored and left untreated it will antecedent almost irreparable damage to the body’s internal organs.

Hypertension is the single most paramount contributor to the manifestation of stroke, one of the biggest killer diseases known to man. Hypertension is also the single largest determinant of heart illness in the United States of America alone and contributes to over 500,000 deaths a year. Excessive blood pressure, left untreated, can reduce your lifespan by up to twenty years!

An immediate inarguable diagnosis of hypertension is essential if it exists. In todays current climate, such is the desire to pick up on occurence of hypertension at their earliest occurrences that the levels at which hypertension was considered alarming have now been lowered and an interim condition of “Pre Hypertension” has now been recognised.

The goal is to try and catch those whose blood pressure levels were once deemed to be at the high-priced end of being normal and stop them from becoming sufferers of hypertension. Sustainable changes to your lifestyle are an meaningful part of the whole new approach to the treatment of steep blood pressure.

With hypertension, if we take a base point of 115/75 mm Hg it has been proven that there is a 100 percent boost in the danger of a lethal heart attack or stroke with every 20 point systolic increase or 10 point diastolic swell. The external signs and prognostics of high blood pressure may not be that obvious to the lay person, to the proficient they can be spotted quite easily. Sometimes all it takes to lower the blood pressure levels are lifestyle changes whilst in certain other cases, medication is required.

With Hypertension and with the knowledge that we now have at our disposal there is no reason that it should be the meditative medical condition that it once was. The bottom line is that we all probably know someone who either has hypertension already but we also all know someone who not only has excessive blood pressure but has yet to be diagnosed with it.

In my last article about diabetes, I explained which tests you need to determine whether you’ve got diabetes or pre-diabetes.

Now I’m going to share with you my top advice for preventing — and reversing — these conditions.

Eating Well

The foods you eat can have huge effects on your health. Eating the right foods will balance your blood sugar, reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, and improve liver detoxification — all of which help prevent and reverse insulin resistance and diabetes.

In general, you should follow a whole-foods diet that contains plenty of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and detoxifying foods.

Here are more details.

When to Eat:

* Eat protein for breakfast every day

* Eat something every 4 hours to balance blood sugar

* Eat small protein snacks in the morning and afternoon

* Finish eating at least 2 to 3 hours before bed

How to Eat:

* Control the glycemic load of your meals by combining protein, fats, and whole-food carbohydrates at every meal or snack

What to Eat:

* Organic produce and animal products

* High-quality protein, such as fish and shellfish

* Cold-water fish such as salmon, halibut, and sable, which contain omega-3 oils that reduce inflammation

* Up to eight omega-3 eggs a week

* Low-glycemic legumes such as lentils, chickpeas, and soybeans

* Fresh fruits (berries, cherries, peaches, plums, rhubarb, pears, and apples are optimal) and vegetables (including low-glycemic vegetables like asparagus, broccoli, kale, spinach, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts)

* Detoxifying foods such as cruciferous vegetables, green tea, watercress, dandelion greens, cilantro, artichokes, garlic, citrus peels, pomegranate, and even cocoa

* Herbs such as rosemary, ginger, and turmeric

* Garlic and onions

* 30 to 50 grams of fiber a day, especially soluble or viscous fiber (legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, vegetables, and fruit)

* Extra-virgin olive oil

* Soy products such as soymilk, soybeans, and tofu

* Nuts and seeds, including raw walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, and pumpkin and flax seeds

* Chocolate that contains 70 percent cocoa (up to 2 to 3 ounces a day)

What Not to Eat:

* All processed or junk foods

* Foods containing refined white flour and sugar, such as breads, cereals (cornflakes, Frosted Flakes, puffed wheat, and sweetened granola), flour-based pastas, bagels, and pastries

* All foods containing high-fructose corn syrup

* All artificial sweeteners and caffeine

* Starchy, high-glycemic cooked vegetables, such as potatoes, corn, and root vegetables such as rutabagas, parsnips, and turnips

* Processed fruit juices

* Processed canned vegetables

* Foods containing hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils

* Processed oils such as corn, safflower, sunflower, peanut, and canola

* Red meats (unless organic or grass-fed) and organ meats

* Large predatory fish and river fish, which contain mercury and other contaminants in unacceptable amounts

* Dairy

* No more than 3 glasses of red wine per week

Keep Moving

By targeting belly fat, regular exercise can improve insulin sensitivity, prevent and even reverse diabetes, and reduce the risk of complications.

Start with 30 minutes of walking every day. You may need to do sustained aerobic exercise for up to an hour 5 to 6 times a week to control full-blown diabetes. Add interval training (described in UltraMetabolism) and strength training to improve metabolism even more.

Supplements

I recommend a number of different supplements for insulin resistance and diabetes, depending on the severity of the problem:

1. A multivitamin and mineral.
2. Calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D.
3. Fish oil (1,000 to 4,000 mg)
4. Chromium (500 to 1,000 mcg day)
5. Antioxidants (such as vitamins C and E)
6. Extra vitamin B6 (50 to 150 mg a day) and B12 (1,000 to 3,000 mcg) to protect against diabetic neuropathy or nerve damage.
7. Biotin (2,000 to 4,000 mcg a day)
8. Alpha-lipoic acid (300 mg twice a day)
9. Evening primrose oil (500 to 1,000 mg twice a day)
10. One to two 500 mg tablets of cinnamon twice a day
11. Other herbs and supplements that can be helpful include green tea, ginseng, bitter melon, gymnema, bilberry, ginkgo, onions, and garlic
12. Banaba leaf (Lagerstroemia speciosa); 24 mg twice a day
13. Konjac fiber, four capsules 10 minutes before meals with a glass of water

Stress Management

Stress triggers insulin resistance, promotes belly fat, increases inflammation, and can cause diabetes. Practice relaxation techniques, like yoga, breathing, and meditation, regularly.

Medications

A number of medications may be helpful for diabetes. The main classes include:

* Biguanides, especially metformin (Glucophage). They can help improve insulin sensitivity.

* Thiazolidinediones, including rosiglutazone (Avandia) and pioglitazone (Actos). They can help increase insulin sensitivity but can cause weight gain and liver damage.

* Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, which include acarbose and miglitol, can help lower the absorption of sugar and carbohydrates in the intestines.

Older medications include sulfonylureas include glipizide, glyburide, and glimepiride. I don’t recommend them: They only reduce your sugar temporarily and actually worsen diabetes over time. Plus, they increase the risk of heart attacks.

Insulin is your last resort and can cause weight gain and increased cholesterol and blood pressure. Many patients can get off insulin entirely if they are treated early and aggressively with lifestyle changes.

Remember, diabetes is completely preventable and often reversible.

And you don’t need to limit your efforts to medication or insulin. Start making the lifestyle changes I’ve described here, and you should see quick and dramatic results.

————————

Many women who become pregnant are unfamiliar with gestational diabetes until they are diagnosed during their second trimester. If you are currently pregnant or are trying to get pregnant then it is important that you are aware of this condition that affects only about 4% of all pregnant women. Most women are not affected by gestational diabetes but with the increasing obesity rates and un-healthy eating habits it is becoming more of a problem.

Gestational diabetes is a disease that appears during pregnancy and goes away once the baby has been born. In a few instances it does not go away causing the woman to become a type 2 diabetic. Most doctors attribute this problem with the hormonal changes that take place in a pregnant woman but there is still no clear cut known cause. No matter the cause it is a very serious issue that if left untreated can have severely negative health effects on both mother and baby.

Most women who are eventually diagnosed with gestational diabetes are unaware that they have it. This is why it is important that every pregnant woman get tested during their 24th to 28th week of pregnancy. If there are symptoms they will manifest much like any other person who is affected by diabetes. Increased frequency of urination, constant hunger despite eating, general fatigue and lethargy, carbohydrate cravings, increased thirst, and weight loss are all signs of gestational diabetes.

Gestational diabetes is characterized by high blood sugar levels during the term of a woman’s pregnancy. Fortunately it is easy to control it effects through changes in diet and exercise frequency. Normally these lifestyle changes are easy to incorporate into daily life and the health benefits far out-weigh any inconvenience they might pose. The changes in diet consist of eating healthy foods and avoiding sugar and other high carb foods. If you are diagnosed your doctor will recommend a dietician who specializes in helping women with gestational diabetes. Working together with your health care practitioners you can create a gestational diabetes diet that best fits your needs.

by Linda Rosenberg

In 2003, “Amylin,” a young mother in rural Tennessee, was very addicted to methamphetamine. After she started manufacturing it at home to maintain her addiction, she lost custody of her children. The loss of her children drove her deeper into despair and more meth use which ended up resulting in a prison sentence and permanent damage to her heart. Because of meth, Amylin ended up losing everything, including her freedom, her children, her job, and her health. However, because of Amylin’s will to change and the work of her area community mental health center to provide evidence-based treatments, everything was not lost forever.

After a 2-year prison stay, Amylin was released and entered a local drug court where she was sentenced to a 90-day inpatient treatment program. Following her inpatient treatment she was mandated by the court to continue her treatment in an intensive outpatient program. Amylin was referred to the methamphetamine evidence-based treatment and healing (METH) program at a community mental health center in Tullahoma, TN. Made possible by a federal SAMHSA grant, the METH program provided comprehensive, evidence-based and community-based treatment services for adults who abused meth and other emerging drugs as well as helped increase community awareness and education concerning prevalence, risks and effective treatments through outreach activities. The METH program, following the Matrix Model, gave services to each participant for 16 weeks, includes 3 group sessions a week & individual therapy. It taught participants effective strategies for treating meth addiction and techniques to help them remain drug free after the program was completed.

Amylin entered treatment in December of 2006 and, without missing a session, successfully completed the program in early April 2007. A key lesson that Amylin learned was how to recognize her triggers to use methamphetamine. Amylin stated, “This program helped me learn ways to recognize triggers and how to properly deal with them. I know that when I think about using or crave meth I need to talk to someone, ‘play the tape forward’ and think about the consequences of using, or go to meetings.” The METH program helped Amylin realize that she could no longer interact with people using drugs or go to places where drugs were being used: “I know now that I can’t go to ‘those’ places with old friends and the METH Program gave me alternatives to be aware of.”

From her first-hand experience Amylin now educates everyone that she meets about the effects of drugs and alcohol. She routinely participates in panel discussions at the community mental health center, telling people new to recovery her powerful story about the consequences of drug use. Through her volunteer work she has made a positive impact not only in her own life, but in the lives of other program participants and the therapists. The strategies she has learned from the program have helped her overcome her addiction and remain drug-free. Because Amylin has changed her lifestyle and now has tools to use to deal with her addiction, she is employed, has regained full custody of her children and has remained drug and alcohol free for 49 months. Additionally, her health has improved because she now takes daily heart medication and routinely sees her cardiologist. This past spring, Amylin successfully completed drug court with no drug court sanctions In August 2008 she completed her entire sentence and is no longer on probation. Amylin’s story is a story of courage and hope, reminding us that recovery is always possible even in the most difficult of circumstances.

Many people think that all drug and alcohol treatment facilities are just like the places they see in the movies. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The truth is that the drug treatment centers for drug and alcohol addiction are just as unique as the people who utilize them on their roads to sobriety. In fact, getting sober usually relies heavily on the addict finding a rehab program that works for him/her (instead of trying to force themselves to adapt to something strange or different).

30 to 90 Day Inpatient Drug Treatment Center

When the alcoholic or drug addict checks into an inpatient drug rehab center or alcohol treatment program, they will usually be asked to pack a bag with clothing and a few personal effects. This largely depends on the rules of the treatment center-some centers restrict clients in terms of clothing types, colors, etc. When checking in, the bag will be examined to make sure that the client isn’t bringing any drugs or alcohol in with him and then he will be shown to his room. In most drug rehab center, the rooms house two or three people. After check in and orientation, the client can expect to have strictly regimented days. A schedule is enforced to create a structured environment. The day will usually feature an individual therapy session, a group therapy session, some education classes and community activities (and meals of course). Some inpatient drug rehabs are stricter than others. It is important to choose a rehab facility that works well with your individual needs.

Outpatient Drug Treatment

Outpatient drug treatment centers offer their clients a lot more freedom than they will find at an inpatient drug treatment center. Some outpatient drug treatment programs are run much like inpatient facilities-a client will check in and be given a safe place to stay while he or she detoxes and then participate in activities and therapy when they want/need to. Other outpatient drug treatment facilities entrust that you will show up for your therapy and education appointments and allow you to live off site. You know yourself better than anyone. If you feel like you can handle the responsibility of staying sober in the “regular” world while you work through your addiction, you should choose one of the outpatient drug treatment facilities that have more leniency.

Many drug addicts are just not able to get sober when faced with the “regular world.” They need the comfort and seclusion of a drug treatment facility to help them as the drugs and alcohol leave their systems and they work to stay sober and get over their drug dependence. Other addicts are able to live at home and regain their sobriety without the help of a 24/7 facility. When choosing a drug and alcohol treatment center, be sure to pick one that has the ability to fill your specific needs and one who works with you towards you goal of compete recovery.

Cholesterol is a kind of fat, which is present in all of our bodies. Cholesterol is considered a vital compound which assists in generating the building blocks of life i.e. cells and as well as the hormones.

The cholesterol is transported and distributed to parts of the body by proteins. The human body has the ability to produce cholesterol in the liver and a small amount of cholesterol is obtained from the regular diet. The name cholesterol comes from the Greek word chole, which means bile and stereos meaning solid.

Cholesterol is a kind of a waxy alcohol, which is essential for human life but when it exceeds certain levels becomes harmful as it causes atherosclerosis. Cholesterol is the product of synthesis of the body cells though we obtain a certain amount from our diets as well. Though cholesterol is considered as a fat, it is important because it helps to build and maintain the cell membranes and helps to regulate the fluidity of the membrane even over a high degree of temperature.

The cholesterol is of two types, which are – Bad cholesterol, is also known as low density lipoprotein Good cholesterol, is also known as high density lipoprotein Bad LDL cholesterol creates blockages in our arteries Good LDL cholesterols wash away the extra cholesterol from our arteries, by breaking it down and recycling it. To identify the effect of cholesterol in our body we have to measure the level of cholesterol in our body, which means you will have to find out the amount of good and bad cholesterol present in the body.

If the level of cholesterol is within limits then it isn’t a matter of concern but if the level of cholesterol is high then it can lead to alarming medical conditions. Although, high level of cholesterol is not considered as an illness but it is associated with many ailments. When the level of the cholesterol increases, it means that the level of BAD LDL has increased. So controlling the level of cholesterol is a wise precautionary measure to save oneself from diseases.

Cholesterols are very important for your body as it has various functions like preparing bile salts, vitamin D, hormones etc. Cholesterols are mainly produced by the liver. The LDL cholesterol among the two kinds gets deposited in the artery walls and forms plaques. With formation of more plaques the artery lumens gets narrower and the blood flow is gradually checked.

The cholesterol level in the blood gets elevated due to many reasons like trans fatty acids, saturated fats and not the dietary cholesterol. Infact there are many foods, which helps in controlling LDL levels. The Food components like polysaturated fats (nuts & fish) and soluble fibers (fruits, oats, legumes, barley) are some of them. The good HDL promotes health as it carries away the excess cholesterol from the blood and transports them to the liver for excretion.

It even removes the extra cholesterol deposits present in the artery walls. This ensures a smooth blood flow and prevents an individual from threats of heart disease. Regular exercises and workouts also help to raise the level of HDL cholesterol.

There are certain factors, which affect the level of cholesterol in blood. Factors like age, gender, genetic problems, body weight, eating problems, body shape and level of exercises are also responsible for increasing cholesterol levels. People aging within 35-45 must check their cholesterol levels and consult an expert to reduce it, if required. If somebody wants to check his cholesterol level, he should make some changes in his lifestyle as well; like quitting all bad habits like smoking and incorporate all good habits like regular exercises.

Since time immemorial, kings and emperors, sages and scientists, as well as ordinary folks like you and I, have sought longevity and the fountain of youth. In other words, we all wish to become younger and healthier for longer. However, being able to become younger and healthier for longer may become a dream for many and a realty only for a few.

Who in the right mind would not want to be younger and healthier for longer? Maybe except for those plagued by the ravages of diseases, or those afflicted by emotional disorders, such that they would seek the comfort of death as opposed to living a life of pain and suffering.

There are advantages of being younger for longer, or looking younger than the chronological age. You may have an edge over others in different ways: you may look more productive in work, more energetic in life, and more appealing to the opposite sex. All these factors contribute to your overall mental and emotional health and wellness. In life, it is important that you feel good about yourself. Self-confidence and self-esteem often hold the key to success in any endeavor in life. Remember, good mental and emotional health is conducive to the wellness and well-being in an individual. So, you can see looking younger is more than just vanity.

To be healthier for longer is also a desire of many. Without good health, life becomes a living of pain and suffering. Although diseases and ailments may be as inevitable as death, many recover and recuperate from them, and brace themselves for yet another onslaught further down the road. This is life, and the human spirit at its best. Unfortunately, as we age, we become more vulnerable to these setbacks in health. This is when we all wish we could be healthier for longer.

The advantage of being healthier for longer is that disease-free living affords you an opportunity to make better use of your time and stamina to do the things you wish to accomplish in your life. In other words, being healthier for longer gives you better opportunities for success in life.

There is no dispute that everyone wants to be younger and healthier for longer. It is a dream for many, but only a reality for a few.

To become younger and healthier for longer is a Herculean task. In life, the road to being younger and healthier for longer is paved with good intentions. A wish is no more than a thought. To turn it into a reality is something else.

For one thing, the American culture does not nurture and promote the concept of being younger and healthier for longer. Americans want a “quick fix” for any problem. (Just look at the economic bailout plan to fix the American economy.) When one has the mentality that not only “anything” can be fixed but also can be fixed “quickly,” one may have the tendency to overlook the causes of the problem itself. For example, fix an aging face with Botox, which can instantly eliminate lines on your wrinkled face. With that mentality, it is easy for one to go on a lifestyle on the fast lane – smoking, drinking, taking drugs, and worshiping the sun. When a problem occurs, just fix it!

Quite often, a “quick fix” may create only more problems down the road. For example, instead of natural healing (which normally takes time), taking pharmaceutical drugs may only cure the symptoms of a disease, while infusing the body with more chemical toxins.

The American culture does not make it easier for one to become younger and healthier for longer.
