Let’s face it: sometimes having boys is “easier.”

But girls are more fun when it comes to packing them off for college!

Girls tend to want to decorate, guys tend to want function first- decorations come later. So this list has a few decoration ideas included.

We went through this with our oldest son who moved into his first college apartment and now we’re packing up our daughter as well.

These are the things we remembered to send later, and Amazon came through. But add it to your college checklist for girls now so you won’t have to panic buy later!

• masks – they won’t use them unless they need them. And a need could arise. So pack a few masks for emergency quarantines
• cork boards for easy decorating and note making

If you’ve had to wake a teen up for school over the years, you know that a dark cave of a room is conducive to sleeping all. day. long.

So this is on our list of things NOT to add to your college checklist for girls if you want them to, you know, actually wake up for class.

Dear teachers & public school workers,

Without you, I’d be a big puddle of weepy mommy guts every day.

I salute you and hope your year is as wonderful as your “summers off” – I promise.

I’m in FULL agreement with Dena here in the video. Because she’s basically every mom who knows just how amazing back-to-school time can be.

For the parents, of course.

Small confession from this mom: Back-to-school is kicking my booty this year.

While I’m celebrating with a mimosa in one hand, I’m eating half a pie with the other to drown my sorrows.

School starts soon, and I’m a puddle of mush already.

What’s bringing me down?

One kiddo in the “big school.” And three off to college.

All of them are taller than me now and my daughter wears my shoes and some of my less mom-ish clothes.

Middle school and high school is hard, and I’m equally excited and terrified for myself.

I mean, them.

For them. Ahem.

And super sad that I’ll be losing more of them to the world in just a few short years. Sob!

But that’s a post for another day.

Mommin’ ain’t easy, my friends.

FREE! FREE! FREE! As far as the eye can see- there are free things at Disney World.

No, we’re not crazy, thank you very much, but we can hear it now.

What in the WORLD are they talking about, free things at Walt Disney World? Those tickets and resort hotels are expensive! Don’t even get me started on airfare or transportation from MCO to Disney. It costs a LOT to go to Disney World!

Yes, this is true. We won’t even pretend to argue that point.

However, we know you’re going. You know you’re going. Disney knows you’re going.

So you might as well get the most bang for your buck while you are there. Here’s a list of 79 free things you can do at Walt Disney World.

Best 79 Ways to Score Free Stuff at Disney World

Some are physical items you can nab for free at Disney, and some are free experiences. There are some ways to enjoy Disney World without spending extra money.

Knowing these savings hacks at Disney World can make your next visit even more magical!

1. Free Disney World Phone Apps

Like it or hate it, the need to navigate Disney planning via your phone apps is here to stay.

Luckily, these apps are 100% free at Disney World to use.

Download the My Disney Experience app and the Play Disney Parks app, especially if you want to get the most out of the new MagicBand Plus (which is NOT free, ahem).

2. Free Stuff at Disney World: BIRTHDAY DESSERTS

Is it your birthday? A Disney birthday is the best birthday EVER!

Table service locations will gift your birthday girl or boy with a special dessert if you let them know you are enjoying a birthday celebration at Disney World.

3. Free at Disney World: Yoga Classes At Select Resorts

Some resorts offer early morning yoga classes.

Get your zen on before you set your rope drop plans in action!

Find more information about free yoga classes at Walt Disney World here.

If you want yoga in front of the castle, however, you’ll need to spend some money on a runDisney yoga event.

4. Skip The Lines For Free At Disney World

You’ve likely heard about the new Genie+ and Lightning Lane programs. It is a pay-to-play “skip the line” program that replaces the once-free FastPass+ system.

But there are still ways to skip the long lines at Disney World – and it’s free!

Use this money-saving (and time-saving!) tip and check out the single-rider lines at Disney.

5. Holiday Freebies And Entertainment

Have your kids ever gone trick or treating at Disney World?

You can pay for the Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party each year, where you score free candy, that’s true. And it’s GOOD candy too!

But your kids can also dress up and trick or treat at many Walt Disney World Resort lobbies.

Be sure to head over to Fort Wilderness to see the awesome Halloween or Christmas decorations that are put up by the camping guests each year.

Visiting Fort Wilderness is free and accessible via a boat launch from the Magic Kingdom.

6. Free Cups Of Water And Water Bottle Refill Stations

Stay hydrated, y’all!

Florida doesn’t play when it comes to the heat, and Disney doesn’t want you passing out.

You can ask for a free cup of water at any Quick Service location (and they’ll give you as many as you’d like!)

You can also use the free water bottle refill stations throughout the parks.

7. Resort Hopping: Free Things To Do At Disney World

Resort hopping is one of our favorite ways to find free entertainment at Disney.

Take a bus, boat, or monorail from a theme park to a resort and check out someplace new.

You do not have to be a guest to shop or visit, but you may need to be one to park in their lot.

Use Disney transportation to avoid that!

The holidays are the best times to take advantage of this free thing at Disney.

Each resort has its feel and theming, and the holiday decorations tend to reflect that, too!

Check out the Easter Egg decorating contests, the pumpkins, or the Christmas trees on display in the lobbies.

8, 9, and 10. Free Stuff at Disney World: Maps, Guides, and Celebration Buttons

All of these are free things you can pick up at Disney.

The celebration buttons will be available at your hotel lobby concierge, guest services or shops in the parks.

The maps and guides are easily found when you first walk into the park; often a cast member will try to hand you one!

Special events will have special maps highlighting new things to experience, character stops, and entertainment times.

11. Watch The Magic Kingdom Fireworks For Free

Some of our favorite Magic Kingdom fireworks viewing spots are also FREE.

If you don’t have a ticket to the park but want to experience the show on non-holiday nights, you can head to the monorail resorts to watch the fireworks.

You can also ride the transportation options, giving some great views from the monorail, ferries, or Skyliner.

12-16. Speaking of Disney Transportation…

Take a boat ride, jump on a ferry, Skyliner, bus, or monorail. Are all free modes of transportation when you are on Disney property.

This is one of the best free things Disney offers and it’s a great way to see all of the resort.

If you have a transportation-loving kiddo (you know the one!), they will flip over riding around on the Monorail for a little bit of non-park entertainment.

And most of them offer free AC, so this is a win all around!

17. Free Stuff At Disney World: The Wifi

Considering how often you’ll need to use your phone for Genie+ or Mobile Ordering, keeping the Wifi strong and free is the least Disney can do!

You’ll also have free wifi in your resort and even on some resort buses.

18-29. Free Stuff at Disney Springs

There are a lot of free things to do at Disney Springs.

It’s free to enter as well.

And there’s free parking.

Here’s what you can do without spending a dime while visiting Disney Springs:

• Boat transportation to Port Orleans Riverside Resort.
• LEGO building at the LEGO store (LEGO Imagination Center.)
• Live music and entertainment.
• Disney Springs Splash Pads. Let the gets run around and cool off (located by Early of Sandwich and the Christmas store).
• Window Shopping. This is the place where dreams are only a Visa swipe away! But leave that Visa in the wallet and enjoy playing the “someday” game.
• Free chocolate at the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop
• Free parking at Disney Springs
• Free play zone at the T-Rex Cafe
• Free jewelry? Don’t mind if we do! Stop by Luxury of Time in Disney Springs for a free necklace.

There are so many free things to do at Disney Springs it’s hard to list them all!

30. Have A Free Professional Photo Shoot At The PhotoPass Studios

This one has a caveat: you need access to Memory Maker to get your free photos. But its high on our list of free things to do in Disney World as a family.

But if you are planning a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique makeover or want some special shots taken by professional photographers, the PhotoPass Studio is a great option.

There are two locations: one by Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom and one at Disney Springs in the Marketplace.

31. Free Scavenger Hunts

You can check with your resort and at Guest Services in the parks to see if they are offering any free Disney scavenger hunts.

These were very popular pre-2020 shutdown, so your mileage may vary on what’s returned.

We assembled a Magic Kingdom Pumpkin Scavenger Hunt for you to enjoy during Halloween Time.

32. Movies Under The Stars With Chip ‘N Dale

Many resorts offer movie nights, but only one also gives you a free character meet and greet.

Head to Chip ‘N Dale’s Campfire Sing-A-Long at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground for a free movie and chipmunk hugs!

33. Free Drawing Class At The Animation Experience at Conservation Station

Time to show your artistic side!

Take the train to the Conservation Station in Animal Kingdom and don’t miss the animation academy.

You’ll have 25 minutes to learn how to draw a Disney character.

There used to be classes at the Art of Animation Resort, but those have not returned just yet.

34. Animal Kingdom Lodge: Free Animal Viewing

After you’ve finished your drawing, head over to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort.

You can walk the grounds where you are sure to spy plenty of animals hanging around just outside the lobby doors.

This resort is so unique and special, you have to experience it to believe it.

35. Watch The Electrical Water Pageant: A Free Disney Boat Parade!

You can catch the boat parade every night just after the fireworks.

Head over to the beaches at the Grand Floridian, Ft. Wilderness, Contemporary Resort or Polynesian Village Resort to see a Day 1 Disney World attraction.

From the beaches of these resorts, you’ll have a great view. You can also see it (sorta) from the Ticket and Transportation Center.

36. Sample Coke From Around The World At Club Cool

Listen, they are all kinda gross by American Coca-Cola standards (we said what we said!) but your kids will LOVE this experience,

It’s located in Epcot, so you’ll pay to get in. But the samples of Coke are totally free.

If you tell your kids Beverly is the BEST. SODA. EVER! you will either start an epic prank war or never live this one down. Because… it’s so bad.

37. Free Concerts In Epcot

Listen, you might think, “sure, free theme park entertainment, big deal.”

And you’d be wrong, friend!

Epcot’s Garden Rocks and Eat To the Beat concerts bring in some super fun, nostalgic big-name acts.

We stopped by to check out the Spinners and their 1980s hit, Working My Way Back To You Babe.

Stop by Autopia and see if they have the driver’s license your wee kiddos are dying for!

The Dumbo may also be handing out Pilot licenses as well.

Yes, for the flying elephant. We don’t make the rules!

But this is a fun way to add to your Disney vacation.

40. Transportation Trading Cards

Kids absolutely LOVE to collect trading cards, and aren’t we all just big kids when we’re at Disney?

Ask the Monorail Cast Members and the Skyliner Cast Members to see if they have any on hand.

41. Food and Wine Passports

Get these stamped as you’re traveling around the World at Epcot!

42. Theme Park Parking Is Free: FOR RESORT GUESTS!

One of those perks of staying onsite includes FREE parking for all resort guests.

Annual passholders, you can include this as well because you get to park free too.

43. Kidcot Stations At Epcot

Stop by each country and visit their Kidcot station.

We’re not totally sure the status post 2020, but we believe most are back with some simple craft or coloring sheet for the kids.

44. DVC Members: You Park Everywhere For Free

One of the perks of membership your hotel parking is included with your stay.

If you are renting DVC points from David’s DVC Rental, this perk is also extended to you.

And that’s one nice perk to have!

45. Soda Refills At Certain Theme Park Locations

If you’re eating at Be Our Guest in the Magic Kingdom, Sunshine Seasons and Regal Eagle Smokehouse at Epcot, Restaurantosaurus & Satu’li Canteen in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, or Backlot Express in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you’ll have access to free refills.

These restaurants all have self-serve refill stations. But be cool: don’t refill your resort mugs here!

46. Watch The Epcot Fireworks For Free

That Skyliner actually gives a pretty good view above the crowds!

And you can also see most of the sky from Disney’s Boardwalk area.

We love the view from the Yacht Club.

47-64. Free Resort and Theme Park Street Performers and Performances

Listen, we absolutely HAVE to see the Dapper Dans perform on Main Street, USA, every trip.

And we hate to miss the JAMMitors in Epcot.

But there are so many more!

The resorts are all so unique and many offer special touches, like the storytellers at Port Orleans Riverside.

Check your resort for Campfire on de’ Bayou on your next visit.

Animal Kingdom Lodge also has a storyteller – ask the CMs in the lobby where you can find them!

66. Free First Aid

We don’t want it to happen, but stop by the first aid locations if you’re at the parks and need a little medical TLC.

We’ve grabbed ibuprofen, Tylenol, blister bandaids, and a mask. It’s available and one of the free things to do in Disney World.

67. Leaving Later In The Day? Take Advantage Of Bell Services Free Luggage Hold (and Transfers!)

We love to resort hop on our stays, sometimes using a split stay.

But we also love to rope drop.

Since we can’t check in until after 4 pm, but have to check out of the old hotel by 11, we use the Bell Services free luggage hold all the time.

They can even arrange a transfer to the new Disney resort as well!

68. Got a Disney Visa Card? Bring It To Epcot For a Free Photo

Every day from 1 pm to 6:30 pm, you can get a photo near the Journey into Imagination with Figment. You’ll be able to pick up a free printed photo as well.

Exclusive character photos: yes please!

69. Free Pin Trading!

Of course, you have to show up with a few of your own to start.

But you can find cast members and other guests who will enjoy the art of pin trading with you.

It’s a fun way to leave with a new souvenir.

70. Get Pixie Dusted- For FREE!

Harmony Barber Shop just reopened this fall and you can stop by to ask for some pixie dust for your kiddo.

It’s located in the shops right on Main Street in the left-hand corner when you first walk into Magic Kingdom.

71. Annual Passholders Can Get Free Access To New Attractions

AP previews are FREE (with AP purchase- ahem). Details, details!

Not everyone will get in, but if you get the magical email, you might be riding the next big coaster at Disney World before everyone else.

72. Wake-Up Calls Are Free!

And you can even arrange to have the call come from the Big Cheese himself, Mickey Mouse.

74. Free Magnets For AP Holders

Listen, we don’t make the rules! So this one isn’t on the list for everyone who is looking for free things to do in Disney World

But we do like the benefits. And snagging a cute little magnet for being an AP holder sure makes us feel special.

75. Exercise Is Free. Seriously. Disney Runner Trails At The Resorts

There are trails where you can get some extra miles in before you hit the parks (or maybe after if you need to decompress?).

Running around the Disney resorts is a special kind of therapy if you ask us.

76. Ever See A Live Geyser Explode? You Can At Disney World- For Free

Head to Wilderness Lodge, where you can find a “live” active geyser.

It goes off every hour on the hour from 7 am to 10 pm.

77. Free Disney Stickers

The Cast Members love to hand them out- and your kids love to collect them!

Ask any CM in the parks and they may have a roll of stickers to peel off for your kiddo.

78. Free Starbucks Birthday Drink At Disney Springs

You gotta sign up for the rewards program, but you can snag a free Starbucks at the Disney Springs location on your birthday.

Do it! Everything is better caffeinated. Even growing older.

79. Visit The Free Butterfly Gardens

We heard there is one at the Contemporary Resort, but disneyworld.com says there’s more!

Many of our parks and Disney Resort hotels grow flower gardens specially designed to attract local butterflies—and it’s working! Walt Disney World Resort is home to more than 70 butterfly species.

Be sure to ask during your next stay if your resort has a butterfly garden you can visit! We imagine there are plenty of butterflies on the nature trails around most Walt Disney World Resort hotel.

What Is the 4th Of July Holiday?

Way back in 1776, a bunch of unruly colonies got tired of British rule and decided to ring that ol’ Liberty Bell. 

They formed a Continental Congress (the likes of Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, & Thomas Jefferson to name a few!) and on July 2nd a Declaration of Independence was produced. 

After 2 days of debate, it was formally recognized and signed by all 13 colonies.

After much debate over what to include and what to leave out, Thomas Jefferson, tasked with pulling the document together, envisioned a nation where “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness” crystallized the very meaning of being an American.

Brace yourself: Fourth of July in Washington, DC pictures are coming.

I mean, you knew this had to happen with me, right?

The Cherry Blossom posts probably tipped you off that I’m embracing my new hometown in a massive way. We’ve been here over 7 years now, and I love it as much as the day we moved!

And my entire family is heading east this year to experience the awesome of the Washington DC 4th of July free events after they saw my pictures last year.

My Dad texted me after I sent him a picture of us at the Capitol 4th concert and I think his words were, “I call dibs on the guest room next year.”

This year is going to be one heck of a birthday party, America!

Washington DC 4th of July Free Events

What you may not know about me is that I am a total Sue Heck when it comes to patriotism. I just love America so much! (Side note: I’m super sad that The Middle is over, but so happy with the way they wrapped the series up!).

Every Fourth of July you could find me in front the TV watching the celebrations from some of my favorite historical locations: Boston, New York, and of course, Washington, DC!

Perhaps above all others, I dreamed of spending the Fourth of July in Washington, DC.

And guess what? That dream came true with this new move. The East Coast does have its perks, as we’re about to find out.

Before anyone feels the need to tell me how insanely crowded this is going to be: I know. I promise I know. We’ve been multiple times since 2017 so I know exactly what to expect when it comes to the Washington DC 4th of July crowds.

I’ve got a plan AND a dream, my friends. Plus we are veterans when it comes to navigating crazy crowds.

I’ve got this! And now you’ll know my five favorite Washington DC 4th of July free events to celebrate the nation’s birth.

1. A Capitol Fourth Concert

Patriotic music? Fabulous Stars? All for free? Have mercy… I’m in!

One of my TV highlights was watching the concert before the fireworks in DC. People hanging out on the west lawn in the shadow of the Capitol building, singing and waving flags… ‘Merica!

A Capitol Fourth is the annual event that is number one on my list. Now I’m just trying to decide if I want to be smart and show up for the dress rehearsal the night before (fewer crowds, less waiting- but also free!) or if I want to go all in be there on the night of 4th.

Decisions, decisions.

Last year we showed up for the rehearsal and grabbed a great spot up on the lawn. It was not too close, not too far, and not too crowded. It was just right.

If you go:

Folks are allowed into the lawn area starting at 3 pm; bring your picnic & alcohol-free drinks and sit a spell. And do not bring carts of any sort. Strollers are ok, but a wagon or cart will have you returning to your hotel to get rid of it! Ask us how we know… ugh.

2. The Reading of the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives

One of my family’s favorite things about being in the DC area: the Smithsonian Museums. They are all free and open to the public, including on the 4th of July.

I love visiting because of the history and because it’s FREE. My kids love to visit because it makes me happy.

Not really, but I can pretend, right?

And on the 4th of July, you simply have to go to the National Archives for the reading of the Declaration of Independence. It was the most American of things I have ever done.

This is the number one must do on my list for first timers to Washington DC 4th of July. It was an experience like no other and you MUST head to the National Archives on the 4th of July.

Fun Fact: The Declaration of Independence was meant to be read out loud. And the cosplay actors and actresses that put on the reading are incredible! You really get a sense of what this document means when they are in character and reading with passion. It was not the dry, boring document that our textbooks make us think it is!

Show up early as there is usually a t-shirt giveaway to the first 1000 visitors; get a seat on the steps and wait. We arrived around 9 am and missed the shirts, but still had a front-row seat.

And there is plenty going on all around you! Bands, music, dancing… the kids were not too bored as we waited. But bring something for them to read or do just in case.

Additional museums to visit for Washington DC 4th of July: the National Portrait Gallery and the American History Museum. Due to their incredible exhibits (the Presidential portraits, the First Lady’s exhibit, the Star Spangled Banner, and, of course, the Declaration of Independence), these are my personal top 3 museums that I’ve visited thus far.

Oh my goodness, my nerd flag is flying right now because I’m getting a little giddy just thinking about it!

3. Washington DC 4th of July Parade

What Fourth of July in Washington, DC would be complete without a parade? Constitution Avenue is the place to be for this Washington DC 4th of July free event.

The Parade consists of invited bands, fife and drum corps, floats, military and specialty units, giant balloons, equestrian, drill teams, VIP’s, national dignitaries, and celebrity participants.

Can you hear the sobbing coming from me yet? I just might be *that* lady over there openly weeping as the fife and drum corp passes by.

The National Independence Parade starts at 11:45 am between 7th and 17th streets. Typically the end of the parade has less of a crowd, so if you are looking to avoid people (ha- as if on the 4th!) that might be the best bet.

4. Visit the Washington DC Monuments on the 4th of July

There is nothing I’ve loved more about moving to Washington than visiting the monuments. We’ve been dozens of times since we moved here, and they are always worth visiting the city to see.

For the Fourth of July with my family, saying thank you to a couple of founding fathers are a must-do.

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial is tucked away from the action near the Tidal Basin but is an easy walk from the mall area. I’m also banking that it might be a smidge less crowded after the chaos of the Mall.

And of course, you can’t miss the George Washington Memorial which takes center stage on the National Mall. While the tour is closed to visitors right now, it’s still a mighty fine sight to see on a day celebrating our hard-won independence.

If you can’t make it over to them on the 4th, just know that the monuments are always open and they are always free to visit!

5. Washington DC 4th of July Fireworks

This is the big show, and I’m ready to be front and center on the National Mall for this one! Or maybe across the Potomac at Iwo Jima. Or up on the hill of the National Cathedral.

Both of which, I hear, offer stunning and meaningful views of the Washington DC 4th of July firework show.

Gah! I can’t decide! There are so many choices and so many viewpoints for the Washington, DC 4th of July fireworks!

Last year we chose to sit on the Mall, smack dab in between the Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial. The Lincoln Memorial was right in front of us and the view could not have been better! I mean, swoon.

But there’s only one me and only one night. I’m still working on the plan and my kids are saying Ma, please, another month of obsessing over this?

It’s like they don’t even know me…

We went in pretty light, but if you are making a whole day of the events, here are some items you might want to consider taking with you. (Amazon Affiliate Links)

• An Umbrella (for shade or rain)
• A Picnic Blanket (love this one! It’s extra large and folds up to a nice carrying case. Check it out!)
• A travel backpack
• A small cooler with wheels
• Water. Lots of water.
• Snacks (you can check out my suggestions for a road trip here)
• Phone chargers (just keeping it real!)
• A hat
• A Chair
• Uber or Lyft apps on your phone. At the end of the night, you might want to skip the mile walk back to the hotel!
• YOUR PATIENCE. There are a lot of folks out there just trying to have a good time, too!

Happy Memorial Day!

That’s like nails on a chalkboard, y’all.

Let’s not say that. Because it’s not exactly a happy occasion or a time to celebrate if your family lost a loved one in the service of our country.

And that’s exactly what Memorial Day is meant to mark. 

Yet every year we see this said, often followed by a “thank you for your service!” to all vets. 

Friends, I say this with love. Please stop doing that.

Here’s what you need to know about Memorial Day vs Veterans Day (and Armed Forces Day as well!).

The Short And Sweet: Memorial Day vs Veterans Day vs Armed Forces Day

• Memorial Day: honors those who lost their lives in the military service of our country. 
• Veterans Day: honors those who have served in the military.
• Armed Forces Day: honors those serving. 

When is Memorial Day in the US?

Memorial Day is marked on the last Monday of May. 

Why Do We Celebrate Memorial Day?

It’s a public holiday that marks back to the post-Civil War era. A Union veteran organization, the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), created Decoration Day. 

The idea was to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. The day was to be observed on May 30 since flowers all over the country should be in bloom at that time. 

Congress made it an official holiday by signing The National Holiday Act of 1971.

When is Veterans Day in the US?

Veterans Day is marked on November 11 in the United States. 

Why Do We Celebrate Veterans Day?

It was once called Armistice Day and honored the end of World War I. That war ended on November 11, 1918, and was hoped to be the end of all wars. 

Congress amended the Act of 1938 to read Veterans instead of Armistice in 1954. 

On November 11, it is appropriate to thank American veterans of all wars and all former service members. 

When (And What) Is Armed Forces Day?

Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the 3rd Saturday of May. 

Why Do We Celebrate Armed Forces Day?

Serving our country in the armed forces is a very big deal, a tough job, and these guys and gals deserve at least one day of THANK YOU from a grateful nation. 

Okay, so that’s why I think we should celebrate it. Ahem. 

President Harry Truman came up with this idea and I think he was spot on. Originally there was a day to honor each branch of the armed services (and often you’ll see folks celebrating on the branch “birthday” in this way).

But on August 21, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day, uniting them all into one day of celebration. 

Do you see how each of these days is marked and meant to be acknowledged with a different purpose in mind? While I know it is well-meaning, I also know my military friends can find it a bit frustrating to see folks thanking a vet for their day at the lake on Memorial Day. 

Let’s give them the respect and honor they deserve by knowing the difference between Memorial Day vs Veterans Day vs Armed Forces Day.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is open in Disneyland and Walt Disney World. And yes, we think it is out of this world! One of the experiences we had to check out: how to build a droid at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Droid Depot. Because we wanted a little buddy to tour Batuu with- and those droid backpacks are super cute too!

We are so excited for Walt Disney World to get its own version of Galaxy’s Edge. 

As the Fangirls we are, we were right there on the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opening day (you can check that out here if you missed it), but didn’t get a chance to do all that this land has to offer. Because honestly: those lines were crazy long!

While most people focus on the Millenium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run attraction, there are two other experiences at Galaxy’s Edge that can add to your adventures in Batuu.

Guests can build their lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop, or the one I couldn’t wait to experience, building my droid at the Droid Depot.

How Much Are The Droids at Droid Depot?

One of the most frequently asked questions about Droid Depot is about the price of the droids.

How much does it cost to make a droid in Galaxy’s Edge? Or how many credits, in the language of Batuu, will you be shelling out?

The complete Droid-making experience is $99.99 plus tax.

This includes the whole experience, the droid, and a cardboard carrier. 

Sadly, there are no discounts for the experience itself (sorry, AP’s, DVC Members and Cast Members), but discounts are available for the add-on accessories. 

A credit card is required to hold the reservation, but you are not charged until you arrive at your experience.

Do You Need Reservations to Build a Droid At The Droid Depot?

Reservations can be made to build your droid, up to 180 days in advance, via My Disney Experience at Walt Disney World.

The experience is for the builder plus one guest, so make note if you have a larger party that you may need to build more than one droid. 

Additionally, one guest in each party must be 14 or older.

In addition to reservations, the droid depot occasionally takes walk-ups.

I have found that mornings are more crowded and less likely for walk-ups, but evenings seem to be more manageable.

How To Build A Droid at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Droid Depot

The droid depot is located closest to the Toy Story Land entrance to Galaxy’s Edge.

You will notice the droids outside the building helping you to locate it.

When you get inside you will find a shop filled with droids and parts everywhere.

Droids hang from the ceiling on a conveyor belt, traveling throughout the depot, while the center is where people are bringing their droids to life.

Once inside we checked in with a cast member who had the datapad (iPad) and made sure to stop and take a look at the walls on the left before we paid for the experience. 

1. Pick Your Droid Unit: R Unit or BB Unit

You can choose to make either an R unit (like R2-D2) or the newer BB unit (like BB-8). All the available parts are on the two walls on the left side.

Not all color combinations are available for both styles. 

You will need to know which style you would like to build when you get up to the register.

After you pay, they give you a basket to collect your parts, and in the basket, there are instructions for which parts you need to get for your specific droid type.  

2. Choose Droid Parts From the Droid Conveyor Belt

You proceed to the droid conveyor belt where parts go rolling by (no pun intended), and you can pick and choose which options, comparing all the colors you need. 

I had an idea of what I wanted going in for colors, but I put two options in my basket before I made my final decision.

If you don’t see a color or option you want on the belt, ask a cast member. They were happy to assist and go find parts in the back to match.  

3. Start Assembling Your Droid in the Droid Depot

Once I had all my parts in my basket, I was assigned a workstation to build my unit.

Instructions for each type of droid are right on the console.

It is a simple process for both adults and kids.

An electric screwdriver is available hanging at each station for the one set of screws needed. When you have your droid put together, you’ll call the attendant over with a click of a button!

4. Activate Your Droid

An attendant comes over to help you activate. 

You place the droid in the activation location with its remote and push the activation buttons. 

The activator lights up each stage of its programming and the droid magically comes to life. It lights up and starts moving, just like in the movies. 

It’s such a fun little moment to watch it all come together. The attendant explains some simple directions of how to use the remote with your droid, put your droid in the box and send you on your way.  

Build a Droid: Extras You May Want For Your Droid

Each droid comes with a personality of its own, but you can purchase additional personality and affiliations (First Order, Resistance, or no allegiance to either side) for $12.99. 

You can purchase additional decals and attachments for your units.

I chose to get to know the personality of my new droid, before deciding if I wanted a new one for her.  

How The Droids Enhance Your Trip to Batuu

The droids interact with Bluetooth technology all over Batuu and also when they are near other droids they tend to get excited.

It was fun to take my droid for a walk around the land (in the carrier) and hear the interaction with the areas we were in and with other droids. 

You can’t use the droids with their remotes in the land.

The ground isn’t even- making it hard for the droids to roll or walk across. And it’s a bit too crowded!

I do recommend taking some pictures with your droid throughout the land.

My little BB-L8 even got to meet Chewbacca over by the Falcon.

Is Building a Droid At The Droid Depot Worth The Cost?

Overall, while the price tag seems steep, the experience is well worth it.

There are free things in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge as well, but I felt this was money well spent. 

It was fun to customize and bring this droid to life and have it interact within the land. 

Mine has been rolling around in my house all morning. I plan on taking it back for more interactions on another trip to Batuu.
