How to be a successful Corps member

I've been to other Orientation camps lately and my new motivation is that as a corps member you can be successful.

I'm impressed with the level of committment of NYSC to the Skill acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development(SAED) programme being developed for corps members.

The slogan of this scheme is "corps members creating wealth"

In my subsequent post, I will be sharing how corps members can create wealth and be successful.

Av been away on Project Management Works. How is it going. Some corps members has passed out since my las post, and some are in camp now as I'm posting.
My desire is that you should purpose to win awards right from the camp.

I stumbled upon List of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) / NYSC Venture Price Competition for Batch A, Batch B and Batch C 2012/2013 Service Year, State Awards that was released by CBN, Dec 10th, 2014.

We are expecting for 2013/2014.

Things to take to NYSC Orientation Camps

Dear Otondo, congratulation on your call-up letter. Hope you are good and ready to go to camp.
Wish you a safe journey.
And don't forget to take along the following:

Original Call-up letter: scan it first for future reference and make photocopies plus your original to camp.
Your final year Student ID Card: this should be a most recent and the expiry date should be at least a month after orientation camp.
Statement of Result from your school: for some people that have graduated a longer time, certificate may be available and this should be taken instead of statement of result. I will like to tell you here that all NYSC camps have the signature of the approving officer of all Institutions approved for NYSC.
Passport photograph: at least 30

The following are important notice for general public:-

ON-LINE REGISTRATION FOR ALL PROSPECTIVE CORPS MEMBERS:
- This is to inform all prospective corps members that with effect from the 2014 Batch 'C' orientation, all prospective corps members will register on-line and also print their call-up letters on-line.
- There will be no need for them to travel to their respective schools to collect call-up letters before reporting at the orientation camp.
- Operational details of this will be made known soon.

Anyway, that's the major theme of this blog: "to provide information for serving corps members on opportunities and awards available for them during their service year, and to provide answers to any question they have during service year".

Back to my corper friend, this article is to guide you on how to apply for NYSC-CBN venture awards.

The NYSC-CBN venture awards is a competition for corps members write a business plan and compete both at state level and national level.
The competition is run per batch in all the states.
For each batch, each serving corps member have the grace up to the day of passing out to submit. The awards are categorised thus:

STATE AWARD for CBN-NYSC Award
1ST PRIZE: =N= 200, 000
2ND PRIZE: =N= 150, 000
3RD PRIZE: =N= 100, 000

FEDERAL AWARD
1ST PRIZE: =N= 1 MILLION

How to start Individual CDS in your state of Service during your NYSC service year

Dear corps members, I hope you are doing well, and by now you have settled in your PPA's. My post today is on how you can start your award winning CDS project.
Introduction
Cds projects is one of the four cardinal programmes of NYSC which are:

Orientation
Primary assignment
Year round CDS-YRCD - this is the Individual CDS projects
Winding up/passing out programe

Out of these 4 programmes, it is only the Individual CDS project that it is not compulsory. Since it is not compulsory, it has been discovered that most corps members don't take it seriously, therefore NYSC attach awards to it to recognise corps members that dare to be different.

The awards are in 3 major categories:

State government award - issued most times by the Governor
Local government award
State Coordinator's award.

Of the three, only State coordinator's award does not come with money but just certification.
So how do you go about this award winning projects?

HOW TO START NYSC CDS PROJECTS
To start NYSC CDS project in your state, you must

1.    First observe a need in your host community, town or state.
Let’s say for example, you are in a community that do not have a refuse dump and you see that where they are dumping it may likely cause Epidemics such as cholera- this is a problem that needs urgent intervention. [a CDS idea already] so, to win award, there is a need for you to do more than one project and all of your project must be relevant.

2.    Once you have identified a need, communicate your desire to the beneficiaries and let the head or the rep. give you a letter of approval to that they are interested in the project.
*this step is key as NYSC will not give you approval letter to start the project and without approval you will not be recognized.
3.     Once you have your approval letter, you will now write a proposal to carry out CDS on the following format here

4.      Once you are through with your proposal, take it to your LI [local govt inspector] who in turn will send it to the ZI[ Zonal inspector], who now forwards it to the CDS office.

5.    Do not relax once your proposal is submitted and start executing projects

NB:   You must officially commence your project after the approval letter is given.
Within two weeks you should have your approval, depending on your location and distance to the state secretariat.

If I were you, you will create time to follow up your proposal and the file to the CDS of at the secretarial and know what and what will be needed

6.   Learn to be courteous to all the offices as it will go a long way.

So with these steps, I hope you can start your projects now and with the grace of God, if you start early , you finish early.
So don’t be lazy, go out to impact your generation.

Hey, before you say stale gist, do you know? Are you aware that there is a new DG in NYSC? And if you say Yes, what do you know about him?

Anyway on a lighter note, it was very funny to me when I was discussing with my pastor on sunday and he told me that they have a new DG(cos he works at NYSC). I was surprised and thinking in my mind, I think I need to have serving corps mebers who are informed to give me this first hand information.

Profile Of Brig-Gen JB OLAWUMI FSS MSS CM psc (+) psc (joint) fdc (fellow Defence College)

Brigadier-General Johnson Bamidele Olawumi hails from Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State of Nigeria. He attended the Army Children School, Mokola, Ibadan for his primary education and thereafter proceeded to CAC Grammer School, Akure in Ondo State for his secondary education. He enlisted into the Nigerian Army as a cadet of the 36 Regular Course on 24 September 1984 and was commissioned into the Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers' Corps on 23 September 1989. Since commission, the senior officer has attended the following courses:

Regimental Intelligence and Security Officers' Course at The Nigerian Army Intelligence School, Apapa in 1990.
Young Officers’ Course Infantry in Jaji, 1991.
Anti Tank Platoon Commanders' Course in Jaji, 1991.
EME Young Officers’ Course, NASEME Auchi in 1992.
Junior Staff Course at Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji in 1998.

What to Expect at Orientation Camp for New "Copas" (1)

"Corpers wee oh" That's one of the new address system you are going to have when you get to the orientation camp.
Registration starts on the first day(Tuesday) to the third day (Thursday), which is the swearing in ceremony, after this day, registration will officially close on camp. So please I will advise you to go early and register to avoid missing your service year.
Registration starts at the gate, and there they will ransack all your bags and so if you have take along fork, iron, knive or any sharp object, that is where they will collect it.
Try and go early to avoid long queue like this

Requirements for Registration at NYSC Orientation camp

Once you are through at the gate, you will be taken to another point for proper registration.
Registration is the first and most important thing at the orientation camp, just like at any other place. At the registration venue, you are expected to provide the following things:
Official NYSC Camp Requirements :

1. Your final year Student ID Card
2. Notification of Result from your School (Original and Photocopies)
3. Passport Photograph (Take as many copy as you can but you will only need a few)
4. Your original call-up letter (This will be taken and not returned to you, take photocopies along too)

The forms that will be handed to you and attach your passport are very easy to fill. Fill them correctly, because if you make mistakes on your name spelling, you will have BIG Problems with your Discharge Letter.
After your registration, you will be issued with your State Code Number. This will be like your PIN throughout your Service Year.

After you have been given your State Code, you should proceed straight to collect your mattress and your NYSC Kit.
During my own time, I went straight to my hostel (you will be directed), put my mattress in place before going for my kit. Go for your kit on time so that you can get your size.

NOTE: Make a lot of Photocopies before going to Camp. A copy can be as much as N20 at the Orientation Camp.

Dear otondo, don't be offended o cos that's the name you are going to be be identified with in the next few months. This blog article is targeted more at corps members posted to Bayelsa state.

If you are posted to Bayelsa state, you are welcome to the glory of all lands - Bayelsa state.

Don't expect too much as the new orientation camp is not yet ready, so your orientation camp is located on East-West road, precisely at Kaiama, in Bayelsa State. If you are coming from any side from the West or East, that pass through Warri or Ugheli, you will drop just before your bus climbs the 2nd long bridge, so please be watchful and wake up as soon as you climb the first bridge which is Patani, Delta state.

So please bring along the following special items,

1. A plain white sweater or cardigan - even though it is dry season in other parts of the country, it is still raining here in Bayelsa state, So be prepared.

2. A rubber white canvas - this will complement the canvass that you will be given on camp.

3. Money - there is a lot to buy at Maami if you are not satisfied with camp Kitchen, so be prepared.

And don't forget any of your documents.

This is to inform all 2013 Batch Ccorps members that their call up letters are out in their various schools.

If you're among "The 2013 Batch ‘C‘ Prospective Corps Members" you are hereby advised to check your posting and collect your call-up letters from Thursday 30th October.

Foreign trained Nigerian graduates are to collect their own from the NYSC secretariats of their states of domicile as indicated during registration.

Those Deployed to Adamawa, Borno and Yobe are to report to Bauchi, Benue and Nasarawa orientation camps respectively on the date indicated on their Call-up letters.

Report to camps on time pls as NO late registration will be entertained. NYSC wishes you a hitch-free service year.

How to collect a new posting letter in case of Rejection

Rejection is expected from your PPA. Depending on your PPA, you can either be accepted or rejected. Once you are rejected, please don’t be dejected. All you need to do is take the rejection letter to the Zonal Office as the case may be and you will posted to a new PPA.
Causes of rejection
1.    Your PPA feels they don’t need your expertise or course of study. For example, if you study physics/electronic and you are posted to a commercial high school where they major in commercial related courses, they will obviously not take you or you study business admin and you are posted to a technical school to teach, they will not take you.
2.    Your PPA already have enough corpers
Let’s say your PPA is a growing organization now, and they have a target of just 5 corpers per batch. If you come as the 6th corper, because they have reached their maximum number, they will not be able to take you.
3.    Your employer does not think you can work with them.
4.    You can ask to be rejected.
The NYSC has made provision that all corps employer must provide accommodation at least. So if your PPA says they don’t have accommodation and you think their renumeration cannot sustain you with the federal allawee, you can ask them to reject you.

But note: so many corps members reject their destiny because of this, reason is they want the best place to serve. If you are in the “best” place you will be too comfortable to think of making impact so choose the minimal comfort and make your service worthwhile.
So now that you are rejected, all you have to do is follow the above steps mentioned.

Step to take after leaving Orientation Camp

Corpers wee oh, welcome back from 3 weeks orientation camp course which signaled the beginning of your service year. As you have learnt on camp, the NYSC service year has 4 cardinal programmes which are:
I.    Orientation Camp
II.    Primary Assignment
III.    Community Development Service
IV.    Winding out Events/Passing out

You have successfully finished the orientation camp which is the first cardinal program, and I believe that in the camp you have been grounded on what to do in your places of Primary Assignment.
Now that you are out of the camp, what are the steps to take?
The steps are listed below:

I.    Report to your Place of Primary Assignment(PPA)
The first thing to do immediately after leaving orientation camp is to report at your place of primary assignment. If peradventure, your PPA is far from your orientation camp, go to the community for the night and settle down and the following morning, go to your PPA.
What you will be taking to your PPA is the posting letter that was given to you on camp after the passing out parade (camp POP) on the last day of the camp. The essence of taking your letter to your PPA is to determine whether they will accept or reject you.
The posting letter is a letter addressed to your employer, and a detachable form is underneath.
Advise: make a photocopy of your posting letter before submitting.
At your PPA, the person in charge of corps member will either accept or reject you.
In the detachable form, the PPA will either write YES or NO and stamp it.
For example, if your PPA is a school, the principal of the school will stamp the detachable part of the form and write YES/NO in the acceptance Column.
If he write YES, that means you can continue your steps further, but if he rejects you, read on how to take a new posting letter when you are rejected

Step 2: Submit your letter of acceptance to your Zonal Office or Local Inspector office as the case maybe: once you are accepted in your Place of Primary Assignment (PPA), the form will be detached and you will be given the end part of the form and your PPA will keep the other part, you take the part given to you to the Zonal Office and submit. Depending on how far your PPA is to the Zonal Office, if it is very far, a local inspector will be attached to your area who will collect the form from you and record it in a register as you bring your slip.

Step 3: Open a Bank Account
Immediately you bring your acceptance letter and you fill the register, the Local Inspector / the person attending to you at the Zonal Office assign you to a bank. Go to the bank immediately with 3 passport photograph and your NYSC ID Card lest I forget. For the next 1 year, you must always carry your ID card along anywhere you are going to. Your ID card will open doors for you (depending on how you utilize it)

Step 4: Go back to the Zonal office/LI’s office to fill in your bank details
Do you know why I’ve been patiently listing all this into steps, its because so many corps members are eager to travel back home, so they will just open the bank account and travel home, and will now come back to complain they have not been paid. The reason is because they did not fill the account register before they travel.So once you are through with your account opening, you will be issued a bank account number, endeavor to take this account number back to the Zonal Office and fill in the account register book.
In the account register book, you fill in your account number, bank and your signature. Your signature must be the same as the specimen you gave while on camp.

Step 5: Enjoy your 2 weeks leave (depending on you PPA)
Once you have finished steps 1-4 and you are sure, you can now travel, go for a training, read book for the next two weeks depending on your PPA. If your PPA is a school, most times they are either already on holiday period or about to start. So enjoy the holiday with them. But if your PPA is a private firm, ministry and other parastatals, your leave will be dictated by them, so please adhere to it.
