Here’s your friendly reminder to drive carefully.

The final autopsy report on Paul Walker’s death is in from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office, and there’s some frustratingly tragic news in the report: Paul Walker’s Porsche was traveling at more than 100 MPH when it crashed.

That’s more than twice what was originally thought, as initial reports said that the car was only traveling around 45 MPH at the time of the wreck.

However, the new confirmation of the car’s speed explains the wreck much more clearly. TheLos Angeles Times put it this way:

“The car crashed into a pole and several trees on Hercules Street in Santa Clarita. The force was so strong that after the driver’s side of the vehicle hit a light pole and tree, the car continued spinning until Walker’s passenger side slammed into another tree and burst into flames, according to the report.”

The report also notes that the car was “almost split in half” and that Walker’s body was so badly burned from the fire that he was almost unrecognizable and his organs could not be donated.

The report does confirm that neither Walker nor his friend Roger Rodas had drugs or alcohol in their systems at the time

Investigators have recovered all three black boxes from the Porsche in which Paul Walker died – and all three are “viable” despite the car bursting into flames, a law enforcement source told the Daily News.

Investigators with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department are now in talks with Porsche to have engineers meet them in mid-January to plug the boxes into another Porsche Carrera GT model for data recovery, the source said.

The source said investigators are working with Porsche’s lawyers to arrange the assistance and that the automaker is covering all of the costs.

“We’re going to have to discuss how we’ll do this when we meet with them. We will bring the modules to them and work out what we do from there. We would like to keep things under our control. We discussed possibly renting another GT to plug them in,” the source said.

The car crashed into a light pole and a tree and burst into flames, killing both men within seconds, authorities said.

The investigation source reiterated Wednesday that high speed appeared to be a contributing factor – though the source declined to give an estimate.

“If we’re able to get an exact speed off the modules, great. If not, we will release what we’ve come up with based on the skids,” the source said.

The source said one tire was recovered fairly intact and dated back to 2004.

“It was an old tire, especially in racing years,” the source said.

Still, the source said it was unlikely the tire had trouble with the raised dots marking the boundaries of the lanes.

“I find it highly unlikely that the car lost traction due to a dot,” the source said. “I don’t see it taking the whole wheel off the ground. These tires were wide.”

An Algerian army operation to free hostages at a gas facility in the desert has left a number of Islamist militants and their captives missing.

State TV said four foreign hostages had been killed in the raid. The militants had claimed to be holding 41.

Some hostages were freed, but the number of survivors was unconfirmed and UK officials said they were preparing for news of many British casualties.

Al-Qaeda-linked fighters occupied the facility near In Amenas on Wednesday.

During Thursday’s raid as many as 600 Algerians and four foreign hostages – two from Scotland, one from France and one from Kenya – were freed, state news agency APS reported.

AFP news agency quoted Algerian officials as saying the army had not secured the whole site and the facility was still being searched late on Thursday.

The Irish government confirmed that one of its citizens was free. Five American hostages had survived and left the country, US officials told ABC News.

David Cameron: “We should be prepared for the possibility of further bad news”

Japan said three of its nationals had been freed in the operation, but that 14 remained unaccounted for.

Earlier, the militants reportedly said that at least 34 hostages and 14 kidnappers died, and that seven foreign hostages had survived.

The militants said they had taken hostages in retaliation for French military intervention in neighbouring Mali.

Some workers were reported to have been freed or to have escaped before the raid.

Algerian Communications Minister Mohamed Said Belaid said a “significant number of terrorists” had been killed.

He added: “Unfortunately, we deplore some deaths and some people wounded. We don’t yet have the numbers,” he said.

Grave concern

BBC political editor Nick Robinson says British ministers are still awaiting information from the Algerian government on the number of British dead, adding that up to 20 hostages were still thought to be unaccounted for.

Details of how the raid unfolded were slow to emerge.

Known as “The One-Eyed” as he wears an eyepatch over a lost eye

French intelligence has dubbed him “The Uncatchable”, while locals refer to him as “Mister Marlboro” for his illicit cigarettes operation

APS reported that the Algerian military, which had been surrounding the gas plant, had targeted two vehicles as they tried to escape from the site with an unknown number of people on board.

Militants told local media that Algerian forces had opened fire from the air.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said he was told by his Algerian counterpart that Algerian authorities had tried and failed to find a solution to the stand-off on Wednesday night. “The Algerian prime minister said they felt they had no choice but to go in,” he said.

Mr Cameron, who cancelled a key speech on Europe scheduled for Friday, made it clear that he would have preferred to have been told in advance, a spokesman said .

The British government had offered Algeria advice on how to deal with the siege situation – whether through negotiations or a military solution – because the Algerian government lacked the expertise to deal with it, our correspondent says.

There was great concern in the UK and other Western nations when the Algerian authorities said the military had been sent in, he adds.

Japan’s government protested against the raid, urging Algeria “put the highest priority on people’s lives”. The US said it was “seeking clarity” on what had happened.

Algerian Interior Minister Daho Ould Kablia said the kidnappers were Algerian and operating under orders from Mokhtar Belmokhtar, a senior commander of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) until late last year.

Mr Ould Kablia said they had entered Algeria from Libya, AFP reported.

Two people were killed when militants attacked the gas plant.

The Tigantourine gas facility is about 40km (25 miles) south-west of In Amenas, which is close to the Libyan border and about 1,300km (800 miles) south-east of Algiers.

BP operates the gas field jointly with Algerian state oil company Sonatrach and Norwegian firm Statoil

On the legendary 1951 USF football team were 10 men who would play in the NFL. Three of them – Ollie Matson, Gino Marchetti and Bob St. Clair – eventually were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a record for one college team.

But the best player on that team, Marchetti and others insist, didn’t play a down in the NFL.

“I’ve said it about a hundred times,” Marchetti said Monday. “Burl Toler was the best. He had everything an athlete should have: He loved the game, he was fast and he was the best tackler I’ve ever seen. He would have been a hell of an NFL linebacker.”

Mr. Toler was the No. 1 draft pick of the Cleveland Browns, but blew out his knee playing against the defending NFL champion Los Angeles Rams in the College All-Star Game in Chicago.

Mr. Toler, who died Sunday at age 81 at Eden Hospital in Castro Valley, was mourned by his former teammates at CCSF and USF and by others who knew him in his 25-year career as an NFL official and his many years as an educator in San Francisco. He was the NFL’s first African American official.

Mr. Toler didn’t play football in high school in Memphis. He didn’t decide to play until his senior year, when a severe burn on his arm in a kitchen accident kept him from playing; he served as the team water boy instead.

He briefly attended LeMoyne (now LeMoyne-Owen) College before an uncle who lived in Oakland invited him to the Bay Area in 1948. He attended CCSF and was spotted in a gym class by an assistant coach, who invited him to try out for football.

“Nobody could block Burl because he was so strong and quick,” said Walt Jourdan, a former CCSF running back. “He didn’t even have a uniform. Ollie Matson ran three straight dive plays, and Burl stopped him all three times. Then Ollie ran a sweep, and Burl was there to meet him.”

According to Jourdan, Matson immediately walked over to the linebacker and said, “My name is Ollie Matson. What’s yours?” The player from Memphis quickly was installed in the starting lineup.

Their 1948 CCSF team finished 12-0 and gave up only 62 points all season, winning a mythical national junior college title. Mr. Toler and Matson went to USF and another undefeated season.

The Dons of 1951 were one of the greatest college teams of all time, but they weren’t invited to a bowl game. Publicly the reason was USF’s soft schedule, but apparently the real reason was that the Southeastern Conference, which controlled the bowls, didn’t want any African American players. USF had two, Mr. Toler and Matson.

USF had defeated College of the Pacific 47-14 at Stockton in a game that was supposed to determine which team went to a bowl. Instead, Pacific went to the Sun Bowl, and the Dons (9-0) got nothing.

There was talk at the time that the Dons could have gotten a bowl if they were willing to leave Mr. Toler and Matson behind. To a man, the Dons wouldn’t think of it.

“When we found out Burl and Ollie weren’t going to go, we said, ‘Stick it in your butt – we ain’t going,’ ” Marchetti said. “The interesting part was that afterward, you never heard anybody on the team squawk about it behind closed doors.”

Mr. Toler was touched by the team’s stand, according to St. Clair, who became an All-Pro tackle with the 49ers. “He was extremely elated over the fact we as a whole team considered him one of our brothers. He was our teammate regardless of his skin color.”

A further sad postscript on the 1951 season came when USF, losing $70,000 a year on football, dropped the sport before the next season.

Like Marchetti, St. Clair marveled at Mr. Toler’s ability. Referring to the Hall of Fame, he said, “If anybody (from that team) should have been in it, it was him. He was so humble and such a great player – always a team player, a man’s man.”

Marchetti, who also played in the College All-Star Game, said the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder was used out of position at defensive end, and that it might have led to his injury. “That ruined him,” he said. “The Rams ran a sweep and he took three guys out, but he never got up. I can remember it like it was yesterday. He was walking out of the locker room and fell.”

Mr. Toler became an NFL official with the help of then-Commissioner Pete Rozelle, a former USF publicist. Mr. Toler was the first African American official to work a Super Bowl; he would officiate at three of them. One of his most challenging assignments was as head linesman at the AFC Championship Game between the Chargers and Bengals in Cincinnati in January 1982. In terms of wind chill, at minus-59 degrees, it was the coldest game in NFL history.

Mr. Toler retired as an official in 1990, but continued as an NFL observer, grading other officials. For 17 years, he was a teacher, then principal at San Francisco’s Benjamin Franklin Middle School, which was renamed in his honor in 2006. He later handled teacher credentials for the San Francisco Community College District.

His son Burl Jr. played linebacker for Cal in the mid-’70s, and grandson Burl III was a wide receiver for the Bears from 2001 through ’04.

Mr. Toler’s wife, Melvia, died in 1991. He is survived by his brother, Arnold, of Memphis; daughters Valerie of Hayward, Susan Carr of Altadena and Jennifer of Berkeley; and sons Burl Jr. of El Sobrante, Gregory of Oakland and Martel of San Francisco. At the family’s request, a scholarship will be established in his memory at USF.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 26 at St. Ignatius Church in San Francisco. The viewing will be at 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday , with a rosary at 7:30.

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. – Samantha Garvey and her family had been living in a Long Island shelter for several days when they got word the 17-year-old aspiring marine biologist had made it to the semifinals of the prestigious national Intel science competition.

Now, with donations coming in and the county finding them rent-subsidized housing, she’ll again be able to do her homework in a home.

“This is just the most amazing thing you could ask for,” the diminutive Garvey said at a news conference Friday, surrounded by her parents, brother, sister and a cadre of politicians and school officials.

“We’re all in tears here,” she said after Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced that the Department of Social Services had located a nearby three-bedroom house where the family could live. “This is what we’ve always wanted.”

Garvey is one of 300 teenagers nationwide named this week as semifinalists in the prestigious Intel science competition; finalists will be announced at the end of January. She spent more than two years researching the effects of the Asian short crab on the mussel population in a Long Island salt marsh.

“What Sam found was that, like after anyone, after being attacked you develop a tough skin of shell,” said her science research teacher, Rebecca Grella. “These mussels were able to increase their thickness and protect themselves against their predator.”

Grella noted the link between Garvey‘s challenges and those of the mollusks she studied.

“I do believe that is an amazing metaphor,” Grella said, “and I do see Sam as a strong mussel.”

The Brentwood High School senior, who has applied to Yale and Brown universities, was evicted along with her family from their home on New Year’s Eve. Her mother, Olga, a nurse’s assistant, was out of work for eight months following a car accident in February, and her father, Leo, could not keep up with the bills alone on his salary as a cab driver.

Housing prices on Long Island are among the highest in the country, even in Brentwood, which has struggled with gang violence in recent years. A three-bedroom home there recently sold for $291,000, according to Lisa Kennedy, a broker with Eric G. Ramsay Associates. A three-bedroom ranch is renting for $1,800 a month, she said.

The Garveys will pay 30 percent of their monthly income to rent the county-owned property, officials said.

Gregory Blass, the county commissioner of Social Services, said the family was already known to officials because they were staying in a shelter, making them eligible to move into the house. He said the county works to place about 30 to 40 homeless families a month from shelters into apartments or homes. He insisted the Garveys received no preferential treatment because of Samantha’s notoriety.

The house is undergoing renovations and should be ready for the Garveys in about 10 days, Bellone said.

Leo Garvey, Samantha’s father, said that after the eviction he took his family to a hotel for a week because he did not want them spending New Year’s in a homeless shelter. But he finally had to contact Suffolk County Social Services for help last week; they were then placed in a shelter.

This week came the accolades for Samantha’s scientific feat, and the offer for the family to live in a home of their own. Her story has gotten coverage nationwide.

Once sponsored by Westinghouse, the Society for Science and the Public has been running the competition since 1942. Over the decades, contest finalists have gone on to some of the greatest achievements in science. Seven have won a Nobel Prize.

Before the eviction, the Garveys had rented a home for six or seven years, Leo Garvey said. Before that, the family had also lived in homeless shelters from time to time; Leo Garvey described himself as a recovering alcoholic.

Samantha said that she had worried for several months before the eviction, knowing that her mother was ailing and money was tight.

“I ordered a senior picture and I said, `I don’t know where to send it. I don’t know what’s going to happen. What if we move, what if we get evicted,’ which we did,” she said. “You’re out in limbo. You’re like, `What’s going to happen to my mail, what’s going to happen to my college applications. Where are they all going to go?’ It’s scary.”

In addition to the county housing, officials said the Marriott Corp. is donating “several thousand dollars” of furniture for the family to use. Others have offered to pay kennel fees for the family pit bull.

“It’s unbelievable; the outpouring of help that we’ve had,” said Leo Garvey. He made reference to a news conference also held Friday in Suffolk County announcing the latest winner of a Mega Millions lottery jackpot. “I feel richer than that $208 million winner.”

NEW YORK-Police shot and killed Dwayne Browne outside of his home in East New York, Brooklyn after he came outside of his house in his pajamas with a gun to check on a possible break-in.

Browne was working installing floors and had attended pharmaceutical school. Browne’s girlfriend says the two were watching a movie together when Browne went outside after noticing a group of men trying to force themselves in the apartment.

The New York Daily News reports

“He looked through the blinds before he went downstairs,” she said. “He said he saw two people running away. It sounded like someone was trying to break in. He went downstairs to check it out. I heard one gunshot.

“He came back upstairs and he was bleeding,” she said. “He looked at me and said, ‘Baby, I’ve been shot.’”

At that point, Juanita said, cops rushed into the apartment and one officer pointed a gun at her head and refused to help Browne.
