A couple of years ago I was reading an excerpt from a site called Hidden City and it described a long forgotten bridge/tunnel that was part of a now defunct transit system. I had some time on my hands (for once) and I needed some exercise, so I ventured out and followed the directions given in the article. Low and behold, there it was, though I almost passed it if not for some intricately positioned bricks popping up from the ground. Here's what I saw and you can read more about it here.

One thing I did different from previous years, is that I went later in the evening, like 5pm. I soon realize this is the best time to go because the big crowds are gone and you don't have to wait behind people to see the exhibits. It was fantastic!!

Introducing Australia's little blue penguins, the newest addition to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden .

My family went to the Blue Party Friday night and had a great time.

The Blue Party was for annual members . It was a fun way to welcome the penguins to the Aquarium.

8:40 a.m. - Mass at Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul

10:30 a.m. - Pope Francis will celebrate Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul. The event is not open.

4:45 p.m. - Pope Francis will visit Independence Mall in Philadelphia.

7:30 p.m. - Festival of Families at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway outside the Philadelphia Art Museum, where Francis will attend. This festival is open to the public, but requires a ticket. Ticket are no longer available.

Sunday, September 27th

9:30 a.m, Pope Francis will meet with bishops at St. Martin's Chapel in St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. Private event.

11:00 a.m - Visit to Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility

4:00 p.m. - Closing Mass for the World Meeting of Families.The Mass will be held outside the Philadelphia Art Museum and is open to the public, but a ticket is required. Tickets are no longer available.

7:00 p.m. - Pope Francis will formally meet with organizers, volunteers and benefactors involved with the World Meeting of Families. Closed to the public.

8:00 p.m. - Pope Francis will depart for Rome from the Philadelphia International Airport

More adventures on the Wissahickon Creek Trail

There are many little treasures along the banks and trails of the Wissahickon in the Northwest section of Philly. One of these, a small statue of an unknown Quaker (he looks an awful like William Penn), which I happened to stumble upon today on my hike.

Here's a small excerpt I pulled from the Friends of the Wissahickon official website that gives a brief history of the site:

Erected in 1883, this marble statue of a man in Quaker clothing is situated on a ridge on the eastern side of the Park just north of the Walnut Lane Bridge. Standing atop Mom Rinker's Rock, the nine-foot-eight-inch statue has the word "Toleration" carved into its four-foot-three-inch base. The statue, which was created by late 19th century sculptor Herman Kirn, was brought to the site by landowner John Welsh who is reported to have purchased the statue at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Welsh, a former Fairmount Park Commissioner and U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain, donated his land to the Park prior to his death in 1886.

The amazing Mr. Stevie Wonder graced our lovely city with an impromptu concert to promote the final time he will perform his acclaimed album "Songs In The Key Of Life". The tour will have a couple of stops here in Philly in October so make sure to buy your tickets. Tickets go on sale Friday, August 21st.

Wissahickon Creek and Forbidden Drive Trail

It was by chance that I stumbled on this place, well sort of. We had visited the nearby and quaint Rittenhousetown about two and a half before with our child in tow. I remember seeing the trailhead and saying to myself "I'll be back someday to ride or walk that thing". And as it turned out, I did and so should everyone in the Philly area. It is wonderland in the woods and an amateur hiker's practice spot. And if you are hungry, the posh yet affordable Valley Green Inn is nestled about halfway down the trail. On the weekends, they sell ice cream, soda, and snacks out the back for the weary traveller. Take a ride up Lincoln Drive and enjoy.

To commemorate the granting of the charter from King Charles II to William Penn in March 1681, which gave Penn the land that would become Pennsylvania, each year the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission holds an annual Charter Day.

A Starr restaurant, The Dandelion hosted a Tea Party, February 21st from 3pm to 5pm. There were delicious finger sandwiches, sweet treats, cocktails, free giveaways and of course tea. Despite the snow that day, it was a big turnout.
