The Titleist PROV-1 is beyond question the best golf ball I have ever used and has been in my golf bag for many years; in all truth I think I have used a titleist golf ball for the past 20 years. When I first started playing golf it was a Dunlop 65 fresh out of the wrapper, for those of you too young to remember golf balls used to be packaged in a wrapper back in the 1970’s and before. Time fly’s when your’e enjoying yourself so they say. Anyway what was i saying? Oh yeah, why the PROV-1? - Simple really, it goes a long way, flies high, stops on a dime and has a lovely soft feel for those chips around the green. Enough said.

My glove of choice is a Titleist Players golf glove or a Footjoy Sta-Sof golf glove, they are made of top quality cabretta leather giving you a superb feel and they are very comfortable to wear. A lot of amateur golfers use the All-Weather glove or man made versions, but I prefer the soft feel of leather and although the leather golf glove is more expensive they are well worth the extra money in my opinion. I know a few of you guy’s use the all-weather glove because it has an extra pad on the heel of the palm to help with wear and tear. Nearly every golf glove wears out there first, some faster than others. But that is a fault of either your hold on the golf club, gripping the club too tightly at address and loosening your grip at impact, causing abrasions on your glove. But that’s another story, see your local pro and he will help with this.

The golf Irons i use are the Titleist Z-Blend Forged with a dynamic gold S shaft and tour velvet grip. They are a blended cavity to muscle back forged iron, which means that the long irons are cavity backed, the mid irons are a partial cavity and the short irons muscle back blade. This is a great idea and has been around for a few years now, help where needed in the longer irons gradually blending to a blade type short iron for that classic look and playability. I love these irons, they are great to look at and have a lovely feel off the club head. In my humble opinion you cannot beat a forged golf club head for exceptional feel and playability.

So there you have it, just a small selection of the things you can see in my golf bag. The best golf ball, the best glove, the best irons and the best golfer of all time using them. OK scrap that last comment, we can all dream.

The more you try to keep your head down during the golf swing, the less chance you have of achieving the correct full turn of your shoulders on the backswing. Your shoulder turn will either be restricted by the head position or you will compensate by tilting your shoulders, either way keeping your head down will create untold problems and they don’t get any better as i hear you shouting to yourself “gotta keep my head down, must keep my head down, please don’t let my head come up again” damn another bad shot !!!! and on and on …

Ok so what should you do i hear you say. The answers as always are straightforward and if you are struggling with your golf swing because you are concentrating on keeping your head down, STOP right now.

The first thing you must do is lift your chin up as high as you can while still being able to see the golf ball comfortably, then you will find you have a good golf posture keeping the back of your head in a straight line with your spine. Doing this will create room for the correct shoulder turn on the backswing without pushing your head to one side or to compensate by tilting, therefore making sure your head has a chance to remain STILL.

And that is the key that will help you to create a sound and repeatable swing, allowing you to maintain your height throughout the golf swing leading to more consistent golf shots. It will take time to adjust and get comfortable with your new head position but the end result is going to be worthwile, so practice this and reap the benefits.

Next time your on the golf course Try not to forget this simple golf swing tip … don’t keep your head down, Lift your head and this will allow you to keep your HEAD STILL. Which was after all what you had hoped to achieve when concentrating so hard to keep it down.

Jim has a mid to high golf handicap so I asked him to tell me his exact handicap, I play off a 17 handicap he said. Just to put you in the picture The 13th Hole on our golf course is a 368yd par 4 with a stroke index of 2. So I asked Jim what is your par for that hole? It’s a par 4 Kevin you know it is, he replied. It is for me I said, but what’s your par? He looked at me with a vacant stare so I proceeded to put him out of his misery.

Your par for that hole is 5 not 4, with your handicap you can have a 5 and still come away with a nett 4. So each time you stand on that tee and think about making 4 you are making it more difficult for yourself. Now if you stood on the thirteenth tee and said to yourself it’s a par 5 you can bet the hole is gonna seem a lot easier to play. I am positive you would be more relaxed and think, that’s not difficult I can do that, and that is precisely how you should approach every hole you play.

And therein lies the problem most mid to high handicap golfers have, they are not playing their own game they are trying to play scratch golf. This is where good course management and mental approach comes in to play.

What you should do is make out a your own personal scorecard relative to your handicap. With Jim’s handicap there is only one hole on the course that he is expected to par and that is stroke index 18 the easiest hole on the course. If your golf course has a par of 70 and your handicap is 15 then your par for the course is 85. I hope you get my drift here because it’s an important part of managing your game.

I know it goes against the grain but it will make each hole seem easier and allow you to play with and relax. Instead of getting out the driver on these tougher holes and then messing up because you feel you must try to get a par, take golf clubs you are more comfortable with. Now you have your new way of thinking with regard to par you will be surprised at how much easier it is to play each individual golf hole. A par 4 on the golf course where you have a stroke means 3 shots to reach the green and 2 putts. Think this way and you will be amazed how many times you make an actual par, which in your case means … Net Birdie ….

I ended by telling Jim to think about your approach to the golf course now! Standing on par 3’s that now become par 4’s .. How much easier is that on the mind? With a nod of thanks and a gleam in his eye Jim wandered off to the bar to join his friends and have a well-earned drink.

This amazing game of golf is hard enough without putting a lot of pressure on yourself. Manage your own game better by thinking correctly and your golf course management will improve as well as your enjoyment of the game. Look at every hole at your golf links in a different light. Make sure your kids know about safety before starting your project. Since the crayons will have to be melted at a  high heat, they may not be able to participate in that part of the candle making process. To start, gather your supplies. In addition to the crayons, you will need a wax carton. This can be from milk, fabric softener, or orange juice container. Trim the top off of the wax carton, leaving it approximately six inches high.  Cut the string for the wick at least 8 inches long. You will later trim the wick to fit the holder. To ensure a wick that burns easier, take three pieces and braid them together. Use smaller pieces of string to tie the ends together. Any non-flammable container can be used for candle holders. Pretty vases, glasses, and jars work nicely. 

Melt about three pounds of paraffin wax in the double boiler or coffee can. To help it melt faster, cut it into small chunks. Melting will take about 15 to 20 minutes. While the wax is melting, peel the papers off of the old crayons. You and your children can choose to separate the colors by lights and darks to have a mix that combines well or you can mix them all together and see what the color ends up being. 

For best results, only add the crayons to the wax after it has completely melted. After the crayons and wax have both melted, immediately remove the mixture from the stove and pour into your candle holders. If you would like to make scented candles, try adding a splash of cinnamon or vanilla to your hot wax mixture. 

It is important that the candles be left alone to completely harden. Make sure you have an area where this can be done. It is also important to make sure small children can’t reach them because the wax will stay hot for several hours and can cause serious injuries.
