When the Rabbi Says, "Come"

I wrote my "Wisdom and Revelation" earlier this week because I had read a beautiful passage in the book of Ephesians. God has made my soul rejoice again by blessing me with one of those coincidences he throws my way occasionally. Our congregation of believers has been watching the entire video series by Ray Vander Laan called "That The World May Know". It is one of the best video series I've ever seen. I told our members that since few of us would be able to visit the Bible lands this series would be the next best thing to being...

When Helping Hurts

I just finished the book "When Helping Hurts, How To Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting The Poor ...And Yourself" by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert. There are some great points made in the book about better ways to help people in developing countries. I want to comment on one of the last chapters of the book. The authors come down pretty hard against short-term missions trips (STMs). One of them had taken one such trip when he was young and has decided that it probably did more harm than good. He then basically states they are a waste of money that...

This is a video I created to tell the Hondurans how much we missed seeing them this year. Most of us who usually travel there were not able to go this year because of the political problems going on but I look forward personally to moving there soon. I invite everyone to watch and comment!

A Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation

A verse in Ephesians "That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him..." got me thinking about how they were supposed to have or get wisdom and revelation?

My Old Human Heart Aches Sometimes

The following two letters were written by Robin and me to send to a select group of people whom we hoped would help us move to Honduras. Our intention was to get twenty people to find five other people to give between $50 to $100 each per month for one year. The results were disappointing. I received one letter explaining why the person couldn't help and received one phone call from someone who was going to try and help. Those were the only responses. It's easy to take something like that personal. I've found that raising money to do mission...

What's your favorite road trip memory? Submitted by Birch Counseling. That would have to be the time we were in Yankari Game Reserve in Nigeria when the clutch cable broke on our car while we were going to see the elephants. We traveled for two days from our home in Ukpom to get to Yankari. The first day we took the tour on the "tour bus" or the back of a dump truck - ate dust for a couple of hours but it was okay. We saw a few animals. The next day we show up two minutes late and...

I Taste, Smell, Hear a Memory

When we moved to Nigeria, West Africa I was pleased to find there were lots of fruits growing all around our house. There were bananas, pineapples, papayas, mangoes and a few others. One was of particular interest. Just outside the kitchen window was a cherry tree or perhaps better described as a cherry bush. It was about fifteen feet tall (that's five meters in Nigerian). The branches were big enough that the kids could climb up them, which they did when the cherries got ripe. The cherries themselves were light green as they grew, then turned to yellow, then orange...

I wasn't going to post this until I saw Monk tonight, so here goes. Thanks Natalie for remembering the murderer's cologne. “You're a con-artist. I'm not going to give you any money this time. You ripped me off for 100 bucks three years ago. So you might as well leave. And, oh, by the way what kind of perfume are you wearing? I remember it from your last visit and I really like it.” That's what I should have said to my visitor that day but she had just got a phone call and had to leave in a hurry....

Thank You Greta Van Susteren

Just saw Greta's report on former President Zelaya and interim President Micheletti of Honduras. She did what our Secretary of State should do - she went to Honduras and talked to the people involved. She did the research on the constitution of the Honduran government and confirmed with Micheletti that she understood correctly that the constitution cannot be changed as it pertains to the number of terms a president can serve. Greta reported that it is in fact against the law for a president to do anything to try to make that change and that this is the reason Zelaya...
