5 Lessons My Mother Taught Me in Her Last Days

The first part of 2016 has been one of the most difficult periods of my adult life. From the time the doctors recommended hospice care for my mother until her passing at the end of February, I felt that my emotions were like a dam ready to burst at the prick of a pin. Without a doubt, the only thing that held me together was the grace of God, which was so apparent during this season of my life.

As I spent time daily with my ailing mother, she taught me, directly and indirectly, many things about life. Some she had already been instilling in me since I was a child and others I learned as I listened to and observed her in the last couple of months of her life. These are treasures that I will carry with me in my journey thru life and hopefully pass on to my children because I know they are from God.

Live with an Attitude of Gratitude

As I watched my mother’s ailing body wither away and every day tasks, that most of us take for granted, become increasingly difficult for her, the fragility of life became a palpable reality. Just as God breathed life into man and he came into being, He can just as easily take that breath away at any given moment of our existence. Scripture reminds us in Psalm 39:5, “Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure.” I’m awestruck when I ponder the reality of this almighty God that created the heavens and the earth, who could wipe me away with a simple puff, but chooses to gently breathe air into my lungs and grant me life day in and day out.

Life is fragile but despite it and because of it, life is also precious. This realization made me grateful for every breath that God granted my mother as the days went by. Even as her health declined, an attitude of gratitude was apparent in my mother, who constantly verbalized how thankful she was for everything God had done. My mother taught me to see everything with the eyes and heart of gratitude and it is something I will constantly remind myself to do, especially during those challenging seasons of life. We are reminded in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 to “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Set Your Eyes on Eternity

Like it or not, we have all been given a finite number of days on this earth. Only God knows when our journey will come to an end in this lifetime. Psalm 39:4 comes to mind, “Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is.” Knowing that life on this earth is but a dot in light of eternity, I realize more than ever that we need to make the most of every opportunity while we’re here, with heavenly reward as our ultimate goal in life.

Most of us have our retirement years in mind as we plan out our lives. We invest almost all of our energy working hard to save up so that we are met with comfort and security during our golden years. Instead, Scripture seems to teach us to live our lives with eternity in mind. Our best life is yet to come. Philippians 3:20 reminds us that “our citizenship is in heaven” and we’re not meant to feel at home here on earth. It seems to me that if we have eternity before us, comfort and security in this lifetime become less important and less logical to strive for. We should strive for treasures in heaven. Philippians 3:14 says, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” This means that I will offer up my earthly life to the glory of the One who has given me life and whom I will join in heaven for eternity.

You Can’t Take Anything with You

I stood in the middle of the closet and looked around at all the pretty things that my mother had accumulated over the years. The stillness of these inanimate objects weighed down heavily on my heart and revealed a truth that I only knew in concept before that moment. You really can’t take anything with you! Not even one little thing. Not your favorite hat, not your favorite pair of shoes, not even a small precious ring.

All of a sudden I felt an incredible urge to rummage thru my entire house and purge everything that I didn’t need. My possessions no longer felt like treasures, but instead, they felt like burdens that keep me anchored down and chained to the false promises of this world. I am determined to simplify and give away my surplus of material blessings to those in need. I am reminded of Matthew 6:19-21 where it says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Live Generously

This is something that my mother instilled in me since I was a child and in her last days, she continued to remind us of the need to live generously. Although it was a given that we should be generous with our monetary blessings, she also made sure to emphasize the need to be generous with our words, our time and our kindness. She would often say that compliments are worth much more than the effort it takes to give them. We can uplift and edify those around us with a few sincere words or simple acts of kindness.

From my own personal experience, I’ve realized that the more I give of myself and of what I have, the more blessings I receive from God in return. The words in 2 Corinthians 9:6 ring true to me more and more thru the years, “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.” I can choose to hold tight to whatever is mine but this is erroneous thinking in so many levels. First off, nothing we have is our own. Everything we have comes from God and belongs to Him as stated in 1 Chronicles 29:14, “Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.” Thinking that we have earned and rightfully own anything in this world is a delusion. Holding tight to our possessions is futile. God can take it all away at any given moment and that is His right. Job 1:21 says, “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.”

For me, living generously is an investment towards the building of God’s kingdom in the form of lasting relationships that hopefully will continue on thru eternity. 1 Timothy 6:18-19 says, “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”

There is Joy in Suffering

Although the Bible repeatedly says so, I never truly understood how joy, as I know it, could be experienced in suffering…until now. I admit that I have yet to fully grasp and embrace this truth, but I think that God gave me a taste of this “joy” as I walked alongside my mother in her journey to the next life. In suffering, we experience greater depths of God’s immense love and mercy, the truth of His sufficient grace, and the reality of His character. 2 Corinthians 1:5 says, “For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.” When we surrender to His will, in the midst of our loss, we gain more of Him and that is pure joy.

There can be joy in the death journey of a loved one. There is much to be thankful for in the process. In my personal experience, I was grateful for the fact that I was able to spend every day with my mother before she went on to be with the Lord. The fact that my brother and I worked together in harmony for the best possible care for my mother in her last days was also a blessing from God. Even though I miss her terribly, I know her joy is complete in heaven, and knowing that someday I will be joining her there gives me immense hope and anticipation for what is yet to come. I rely on 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 more now than ever before, “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

It’s Not Really Goodbye…

Happy Monday, my friends!

I mentioned in my last fashion post that I’ve been wanting to make changes in my life in order to stay true to my heart. One of those changes involves this little blog of mine. When I first started this blog, it was meant to be a fun creative outlet for all the ideas that were swirling around in my head that I couldn’t wait to share with like-minded women who were passionate about fashion, food, fitness, etc. With very little knowledge about blogging, I decided to take the plunge a little over two years ago and what a journey it’s been! It was so much more than I expected in so many ways. The friendships I’ve made in the blogging world have been so rewarding. I’ve been encouraged and inspired by so many of you, and most of all it’s been so much fun! The blessings have been beyond my expectations but, to be completely honest, the amount of time and energy that goes into a blog was also much more than I expected.

My reason for blogging was never about numbers, how many followers I could gain, how many likes or comments I could get or how much I could grow my traffic. However, at some point, those things started to matter and my focus started to change. Instead of letting my real life dictate the content and schedule of my blog, I found myself slowly letting the blog dictate the rhythm of my life. And even though everything I’ve shared in the blog has been authentic and from my heart, I started to realize that because a big chunk of my time was being dedicated to the blog, I was neglecting other important things in my life that needed my attention. I know some of you have full-time jobs and a family with kids, and still manage to blog 3 or more times a week and I’ve always said this, I am truly impressed by you ladies. I’m just not one of those people who can multi-task and do any one thing well.

Until recently, my enthusiasm for coming up with different outfits and the fun I was having interacting with all of you more than compensated for the amount of work I was putting into the blog. But now, with other things tugging at my heart a little more each day, I find myself drifting away. I have to admit that when it comes to putting together new outfits and going out to do photo shoots, my heart is just not in it anymore. I will always love fashion and I could never pass up a good sale, so don’t be surprised if I pop up on my Instagram feed flaunting the latest outfit I’m excited about and sharing finds from the latest sale. Who knows, I might even do a full fashion post on special occasions. But as far as regular fashion posts go, I think my run has come to an end. It’s been fun my friends. Thank you for your support and your sweet words of encouragement for the past couple of years. Hope you’ll continue to stop by to see what I’m up to and I’ll do the same.

It’s time for me to take a break and live life. I’ll let my life decide when and what I’ll be blogging about next.

Outfit Highlight: Boldness

Happy Monday, my friends!

When I think of bold fashion, I automatically think of striking colors, eye-catching prints and patterns, or a mix of all three for a final look that stands out. It’s about going out of your norm, trying something different and new. Similar to fashion, boldness in life requires us to step out of our comfort zone, to not be afraid to be different and go against the flow, even if the choice we make is not necessarily the most popular one. It’s about following your heart even if the path you choose may not lead to success as the world defines it. It’s about defining your own success because you realize that true success is finding your calling and that calling will bring you true joy no matter what others say or think. These thoughts have been occupying my mind lately and I find myself wanting to make some choices/changes in my life in order to stay true to my heart.

On a lighter note, I am in love with this bold-colored peacoat from J.Crew. I just happened to catch it on sale and had to grab it. Cobalt blue is one of my favorite colors so it was a no-brainer. This grid-print dress is another J.Crew purchase from seasons ago that I never got a chance to wear and that I recently found in the back of my closet. The wool material is too warm for summer, the print not a natural choice for spring, and so I thought I’d make it more appropriate for fall and winter. I added a crisp white button down underneath the dress along with black stockings and a pair of booties for a polished fall look. I can just swap out the stockings for tights and add a pair of tall boots and you have a winter ready look, especially with the addition of the wool coat.

Weekly Wisdom: I Wrestled with Jacob and God Won

I recently had a chance to revisit Jacob’s story in Genesis 27-28 as part of my attempt to read the Bible in a year. I knew Jacob was not one of my favorite people in the Bible but my dislike for him grew even stronger as I read his story for the umpteenth time. Conniving, deceitful, self-promoting…these are a few of the words that come to mind when I think of Jacob. He not only took Esau’s birthright but tricked Isaac into blessing him instead of his brother. Even when God revealed Himself to Jacob in a mighty way thru a dream, he dared to put a condition on his relationship with God! He declares that God will be his God if He watches over him on his journey and provides for all his needs. And yet in Malachi 1:2-3, God says that “I have loved Jacob, but Esau I have hated. But why??? It doesn’t seem fair!

As I wrestled with this question of why would God choose Jacob over Esau, I unwittingly found myself going down the predestination rabbit hole. I sought wisdom from notable theologians and preachers and read whatever I could google on the subject. I was relieved to find that many of them also struggled with the Jacob and Esau quandary that I found myself in. But even their articulate and carefully outlined exegesis could not settle the matter in my heart and mind.

It wasn’t until I read Romans 11 as part of my BSF bible study that God started to open my eyes and work in my heart, and drive home the message He wanted me to receive from the story of Jacob. My question of Why Jacob? became the realization of Why me? Am I not just like Jacob, an undeserving sinner, full of faults and shortcomings? And yet, God has chosen me as one of His children. As it says in Romans 3, no one is righteous, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” If anything, I should be grateful for Jacob because his example gives hope to sinners like me who, by God’s grace alone, are justified and brought into His redemption. God wanted to remove anything in me that even hinted at the idea of justification by merit, or any kind of initiative on my part. He knew that my prideful human nature would rear its ugly head whenever it got a chance so He had to hammer down the nail in that coffin. It was like He was playing whack-a-mole with my human pride.

It was the doxology in Romans 11 that finally settled the unrest in my mind and heart. It says:

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!
“Who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?”
“Who has ever given to God,
that God should repay them?”
For from him and through him and for him are all things.
To him be the glory forever! Amen.

The idea that God’s infinite wisdom is beyond my human comprehension is not new to me. It’s something that I’ve always adhered to in my mind, but it was the Holy Spirit that convicted my heart, thru this passage, to rest in God’s infinite wisdom and unchanging character when it comes to matters that don’t make sense in my limited understanding. I believe that God is sovereign in everything, and I trust in His divine judgment, His justice, His righteousness, His omniscience, and most of all, His love for His creation. As I submit to His will, my only hope is that, “As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Galatians 6:14, NLT)

Outfit Highlight: Haute Comfort

Happy Monday, my friends!

Hope everyone had a fun Halloween. How can you not with all that candy, right? The best part is that it wasn’t freezing cold. Temperatures have been surprisingly mild this season and I hear it’s getting up to the low 70s during the week. Yay! The highs and lows that fall weather brings makes it a little tricky getting dressed. I bundle up in the morning but I find myself shedding my layers by early afternoon.

When I saw this fringe coat from SheIn, I thought it would be the perfect layering piece for fall. The coat pictured on the SheIn website appears to be closer to a wool knit material but the one I received is closer to a fleece material, which makes it super soft, cozy and comfy. As you know, I’m big on comfort without sacrificing style and for me, this outfit epitomizes this ideal.

Recipe Highlight: Quick-And-Easy Chicken Noodle Soup

When my daughters and I caught a bad cold a few weeks ago, there was one thing I knew would make us all feel better…good ‘ole chicken noodle soup. There is nothing like a bowl of hot, soothing chicken noodle soup on a chilly autumn day. But when I have a craving for something, I want it right away. If it takes me too long to make it, my craving seems to dissipate. So I took one of my favorite chicken noodle soup recipes, Paula Deen’s The Lady’s Chicken Noodle Soup, and modified it to make it a quick-and-easy recipe. I had three bowls of hot chicken noodle soup on the table in no time. My daughters are a big fan of this soup and love dipping their crusty bread in it. They liked it so much that I made it again a couple of days ago.

Quick-and-Easy Chicken Noodle Soup Recipe

Ingredients

12 cups low-sodium chicken broth
2 cups sliced carrots
2 cups sliced celery
2 1/2 cups uncooked egg noodles
2 cups seasoned chicken meat (I buy a whole rotisserie chicken, remove the meat and dice it. You can use the rest for chicken salad – see recipe here.)
3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves
1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
2 teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary leaves (optional)
1/3 cup cooking sherry
1/3 cup grated Parmesan
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 lemon
salt and pepper, to taste
crusty bread, for serving

Directions

1) Bring chicken broth to a boil, add carrots, and cook for 3 minutes.

2) Add celery and continue to cook for 5 to 10 minutes.

3) Add egg noodles and cook according to directions on package.

4) When noodles are done, add chicken, mushrooms, parsley, sherry and rosemary.

5) Add Parmesan and cream. Cook for another 2 minutes.

6) Squeeze the juice of the lemon into the soup.

7) Adjust seasoning, if needed, by adding salt and pepper.

Serve with your favorite crusty bread.

Outfit Highlight: Bell Bottoms and Bell Tops

Happy Monday, my friends!

I’m so grateful that we’re having a real fall season this year. Temperatures are staying reasonably mild, which was not the case around this time the last couple of years. Our family had a busy weekend but it was a good busy. The five of us got to serve lunch together and get to know underprivileged families at a church in the inner city of Detroit. I’m really looking forward to doing more of these types of activities as a family.

70s-inspired looks are on full force so I was excited to re-acquaint myself with flare jeans, which we’re seeing everywhere these days. I was looking for a more updated version of the flare/bell bottoms jeans and I found the perfect ones at the Gap. The high waist hits at just the right spot, the bell bottoms are not too drastic and the stretchy material adds comfort. I thought my bell sleeve shirt along with my bell sleeve cardigan would be a fun pairing for the bell bottoms. And I couldn’t help adding the leopard pumps for a little flair.

Weekly Wisdom: When You Feel the Spirit Nudging…

I had driven by him several times during the summer. With cardboard sign in hand and a grimace on his face, he would stand there for hours with the hot sun shining down on him. I found myself always in a hurry to get somewhere so all I managed to do was to make a mental note to myself to stop by Target to buy him a cap and a cold drink and bring them over to him one of these days. Weeks went by and when I finally made my way back to that intersection, he was no longer there. Another missed opportunity, I thought to myself. I recalled all those times when I found myself in a situation where I could have done something but didn’t. James 4:17 comes to mind, “If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.” I remember one time when I was waiting in line at the grocery store, the lady in front me was fumbling to find enough food stamps to pay for the items the cashier had diligently rung up. She didn’t have enough so she asked the cashier to take out a few items. I thought I was doing my part by waiting patiently for my turn. Now looking back on it, I think, how could I have been so clueless and oblivious? Why in the world did I not offer to help pay for her groceries?!

If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it,

it is sin for them. ~ James 4:17

Last weekend I drove by that corner again on my way to pick up my girls from their sleepover at grandma’s. There he was, with the same cardboard sign, but this time there was no hot sun, just a piercing autumn wind, and I could tell he was trying to stay warm under his jacket. I thought to myself, I have to do it this time. I would pick up the girls, buy some hot chocolate and bring it over to him on my way back. As I was getting closer to my parents’ house, I started to come up with all the excuses in the world not to go over there and talk to the man…It’s really cold outside…It’s not safe for the girls…What if it’s all an act?…What if people stare?…I can always come back another time… But I just couldn’t let it go. I felt the Spirit nudging me to just go talk to this man and as much as a part of me did not want to do it, I knew I had to do it. Before I could change my mind, I took the girls to Starbucks, bought hot chocolate for them and an extra grande with a pumpkin muffin for the new friend I was about to meet.

Even as I was driving back to that corner, part of me was wishing he had called it a day and left. But when I saw him standing there still, part of me was relieved. I parked as close to him as possible and told the girls to wait for me in the car. I walked over there with the hot chocolate and muffin in hand, having not a clue as to what I was going to say to him. I said hi and introduced myself and he did the same. I told him that I just came by to say hi and that if I were outside in this cold weather like him, I would want someone to bring me over some hot chocolate. He thanked me and we started chatting. Since his sign said that he was looking for work, I asked him if he had gotten any leads. He said he did but because of his criminal record, they fell through. As we continued to chat, what struck me most was that he repeated more than once, that it gets lonely. He mentioned that he tries to forget about it but inevitably, the loneliness comes back. We chatted some more and then I said I would keep an eye out for job opportunities and that I would pray for him.

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders;

make the most of every opportunity. ~Colossians 4:5

I remember being discouraged by others in the past when I tried to make conversation with a homeless man back in NYC, where I used to live. I clearly remember a lady telling me not to encourage him. Doubts had crept into my own mind and heart one time when my husband decided to give money to a guy standing in the street asking for a little change to be able to get home. I remember chiding him for giving the man so much when he’s probably lying about his situation and will be using that money to buy alcohol or feed whatever addiction he has. I still recall my husband saying that it’s not our call to make. Discouragement and doubt will always find their way into these situations, but I just have to trust that God is sovereign and is in control, and that He can use our obedience for His glory. Let’s say that the man was indeed lying about his circumstances, I can only hope that kindness from people like us will get him a step closer to repentance.

I don’t know what the next step will be but I hope that my reaching out to that man in the corner brought a little warmth to his heart on that cold day. I’m hoping that I can go back and share God’s Word with him at some point and hopefully connect him with a church. More than anything, I’ve learned a few important lessons from this experience. When the Spirit nudges me to do something, all I can do is obey just as Paul was “compelled by the Spirit” (Acts 20:22) to go to Jerusalem despite the difficulties that awaited him there. In Colossians 4:5, it says, “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.” I need to ask for God’s discerning spirit to keep my eyes and ears open for opportunities to serve Him in my day to day. As I continue to walk with Him and submit to His will, my hope is to become a slave to righteousness as it is described in Romans 6:17-18, “…though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.”

Outfit Highlight: Plaid and Stripes

Happy Monday, my friends!

We had a packed weekend, starting off with a date night to celebrate our 14th anniversary, an impromptu gathering at our place to watch the Michigan vs Michigan State game (crazy final play!) and our annual trip to the cider mill. My husband planned our date night this time and decided to take me to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for a night of Beethoven. Although I’ve always appreciated classical music, we haven’t gone out of our way to attend classical music concerts. I feel like I’ve been missing out because I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Temperatures dropped over the weekend so it was time to whip out the scarves. I thought my Forever 21 plaid scarf would be the perfect accessory to go with my all grey ensemble and blue booties. I cannot say enough about this Banana Republic sweater. I absolutely love it! It’s soft, cozy and has a nice boxy fit. And did you know that this fishtail skirt is reversible?! It’s white on the other side. Too bad it’s sold out. I chose to keep a running grey throughout the outfit to keep things cohesive with all the pattern and shapes mixing.
