You are what you eat….. scratch that, new studies say that you are WHEN you eat and not just WHAT you eat!

New scientific study results claiming that when you eat directly relates to your own body clock ,conclude that weight gain is dependent on the time of day day you eat.

Where it is proven that the type of food you eat will always be a dictator when it comes to weightloss, inclusive of those ever hated Carbohydrates and bad fatty acids, it has now been proven that the time you eat last before sleeping is another relating factor to weight loss and wight gain.

Journal Cell Metabolism has published results of a study by The Salk Institute of Biological Studies. Satchidananda Panda, the study’s lead author said ” The focus has been on what people eat. We don’t collect data on when people eat”. He went on to describe the theory behind his findings:

“Every organ has a clock. When we eat randomly, those genes aren’t on completely or off completely” and compares it directly to sleep. If you don’t get a good nights sleep then the following day’s performance is poor and not as productive as if you got your allotted hours of sleep. The same concept applies to the body’s organs and their performance.

Eating patterns and sleeping patterns have the same theory under a performance category, and strict mealtimes which seem to be a thing of the past may have been the basis of a lack of an obesity epidemic when mealtimes were restricted. Between staying up later at night, eating your last meal of the day later in the evening and snacking randomly, they are all factors in weightloss and could also be an indicator in weightloss and fighting this obesity epidemic.

A word to the wise – it is not just about what you eat but now it is a proven study that you are WHEN you eat.

There is ongoing research and studies going on around the world in a bid to combat obesity, this being one of many into researching the dos and don’ts of eating. It is the job of these scientists to get the science behind food and food intake if we are to implement these studies into our daily life.

Before you attend for any Science job interview, you must be aware of the following essential interview check list -

Know your journey – where exactly you are going – prepare in advance, know where to park

Know the Science job you are being interviewed for inside out

Know the Company, its products and its competitors

Have 1-2 questions prepared for the interviewers

Listen to the question being asked, take your time before answering and clarify if necessary – a staggering 60% of interviewees do not answer the question asked by their interviewer

Research beyond the basics – do not glance over an ‘about us’ website page and feel you have researched the Company – go out of your way to find out more about the company then anyone else attending for interview will

Use LinkedIn and Google to learn about your interviewers

Use your Science Recruitment Agency to advise you about the Company, the interview process, what to expect and timelines

Never lie on your CV – you can be guaranteed you will be found out by any thorough Science Recruiter or interviewer

Look very sharp and professional

It is okay to be nervous – it is how you deal with the nerves that is paramount

The following are the most common complaints from interviewers following their Science job interviews -

They arrived late

They knew little about our Science Products

They did not answer the questions being asked

They did not research our Science Company enough

They did not look like they made an effort with their appearance

They had holes in their CV which they had lied about

They were just too nervous

They had no questions for us

Whether you are being interviewed for a Quality Engineer job, a Biomedical Engineer or a Science Liaison job, the same advice applies for your essential Science job interview check list

A New Lead in What Triggers Alzheimer’s Disease?

University of Virginia researchers and Probiodrug in Germany may have discovered a protein in Alzheimer’s patients which could be increasing the toxicity of less toxic proteins, which could essentially be what has been described as a “trigger” for the development of the Alzheimer’s disease.

The protein, more scientifically known as “beta-amyloid” has been described as “a real bad guy in Alzheimer’s Disease” by principal investigator George Bloom of the University of Virginia.

Bloom, a professor in the College of Arts & Sciences and School of Medicine went onto to say, “We’ve confirmed that it converts more abundant beta-amyloids into a form that is up to 100 times more toxic, making this a very dangerous killer of brain cells”.

The identification could lead to more effective treatments for Alzheimers and according to Bloom this discovery makes them “an attractive target for drug therapy”

Probiodrug has started and completed the first phase of Clinical Trials in Europe. The trial consists of a small molecule that inhibits an enzyme which catalyses the formation of the hypertoxic beta-amyloid (protein).

“There are two matters of practical importance in our discovery,” says Bloom. “One, is the new insights we have as to how Alzheimer’s might actually progress – the mechanisms which are important to understand if we are to try to prevent it from happening; and second, it provides a lead into how to design drugs that might prevent this kind of beta-amyloid from building up in the first place.”

Working alongside George Bloom, Hans-Ulrich Demuth of Probiodrug is a Chief Scientific Officer and Biochemist for the German company. Demuth added “This publication further adds significant evidence to our hypothesis about the critical role pyroglu beta-amyloid plays in the initiation of Alzheimer’s Disease. For the first time we have found a clear link in the relationship between pyroglu beta amyloid, oligomer formulation and tau protein in neuronal toxicity”.

A day in the life of a Medical Science Liaison

A Medical Science Liaison serves as a resource and a scientific expert on disease state concepts and specific company products who is employed by pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies. They also serve as an educational resource to healthcare providers on disease state concepts, including providing effective presentations to groups and participating in 1-to-1 discussions (tailoring the discussions to meet specific needs.

A Medical Science Liaison’s daily life is very similar to a Medical Sales position minus the sales targets! They:

Interact with the medical community

Represent and support the company at medical conferences

Develop productive relationships with leaders in the medical community and in the practice setting

Visit Key Opinion Leaders in the Hospital and Academic professions

But there is a huge difference in the scope of the role of Medical Sales and Medical Science Liaison.

They must have a thorough understanding of governmental and industry guidelines, regulations and laws for interactions with healthcare providers.

They must be highly qualified in the area of their expertise, in some cases to PhD level and have Clinical experience within the area, alongside 5 years of Medical Affairs experience

They must have a thorough understanding of the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or medical device industries.

Their role with the company is greatly difference also –

They must communicate scientific information clearly in a variety of settings including clinical investigator meetings and advisory boards

They are the liaison supporting the conduct of clinical trials

Serve as the disease state resource and communicate information obtained from field interactions to internal staff.

They must be constantly abreast on the Medical Affairs and Clinical Trials ongoing by the company and be impeccably transfer this information to relevant Key Opinion Leaders in the industries as and when requested

Medical Science Liaisons are the face and the clinical support and expert in front of the products being produced by pharmaceutical, biotechnology or medical device company itself.

Good Sugars V Bad Sugars – The job of a Nutritionist

The debate on the good and bad sugars is a long and quite often strenuous argument between Nutritionists, Governmental bodies and the general public.

Panels of experts are often called upon to give their both medical and clinical opinion on this issue and the one person who can advise is that of a Nutritionist.

The definition of a Nutritionist is a person who advises on matters of food and nutrition impacts on health. They specialise in the scientific study of Nutrition including Nutritional deficiencies, sources of nutrition and nutritional challenges which may face individuals or communities.

Often a Nutritionist will come from a base degree in Food Science where they have studied in minute detail the scientific breakdown and makeup of the essentials of food, being proteins, carbohydrates, fats and sugars. It is these Food Scientists that then have the option to further their studies in the form of a: Masters in Nutrition, PgDip in Nutritional Therapy, or even another degree in Human Nutrition. The more direct route being a degree in Human Nutrition or Dietetics.

There are several different aspects of the study of nutrition which interest Nutritionists – some work directly on the study of nutrients in food in labs and through fieldwork. These Nutritionists may also make nutritional recommendations for society as a whole and they focus on learning as much as possible about nutritional requirements and sources of nutrition.

There are many directions a Nutritionist can take both within their degree and after it is completed. The best course of action is always to get experience in a Clinical Nutrition environment and to then expand into other areas. One of these areas is to advise on food and beverage content and act as a source expert in the area of Nutritional contents of food and beverages.

And it is this that qualifies them to stand on a panel/ committee of experts and to qualify why some sugars are good and some sugars are bad.

The role of this type of Nutritionist is to be the source of expertise in Nutrition, be part of the argument in conjunction and alongside a committee and to sometimes be in the spotlight of the media arguing the cause.

There are many arguments for and against sugar contents, and those that should be credited are those that come with a Nutritionist backing and expertise.

Ireland to receive investment in Healthcare and Life Science

Richard Bruton has announced that Ireland’s youth in LifeSciences and Healthcare are to be invested in to the value of almost €30m! Bruton who is Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation has helped convince an American venture capital firm to set Ireland up as part of their investments.

This money is to be invested in young, vibrant Irish healthcare and lifesciences companies with huge potential to succeed, and that in turn creating further medical jobs, healthcare jobs and science jobs!

Venture capital firm Sofinnova Ventures in San Francisco will invest this €30m, and Enterprise Ireland and the National Reserve Fund will deposit the funs to be invested in the up and coming healthcare and scientific companies of Ireland.

Sofinnova are to also set up in Ireland.

“Venture capital funds provide crucial funding, as well as mentoring and advice, to early-stage high-potential companies in key growth sectors” Bruton said.

He went onto note that “Healthcare and life sciences is a sector which the Government has identified as having potential for high levels of employment growth, and today’s announcement will mean that more high-growth Irish companies can meet this leading life sciences fund.”

General partner of Soffinnova, Mike Powell, spoke of how the investment will “nicely compliment the global and strong investor base we have in Sofinnova Ventures VII”.

“Ireland has produced several outstanding life science companies, including the Sofinnova portfolio company Amarin Corporation. We look forward to continuing to build industry-leading companies for our investors”.

Biopharma changes and positive thinking!

What is Ireland’s biggest success story in the corporate scale – Biopharmaceuticals

And with many products coming off patents, the question remains – how do we keep it going from here?

While opening the breakfast briefing at the Davenport Hotel in February, Matt Moran, Director of PharmaChemical Ireland said “A number of blockbuster drugs are coming off patent, with some commentators estimating the resulting fall in worldwide revenues to be as much as € 100bn. Many of these blockbuster drugs are manufactured in Ireland.”He went onto say, “The key challenge is to continue to develop the sector as a global centre of excellence for innovation and development”

Mr Moran went on to describe our healthcare system needing to “support access to innovative medicines and medical technologies that are developed in Ireland. Medical treatment funding is regarded as an investment in the nation’s health and economic prosperity.”

Our Biopharma industry faces challenges of potential job losses and not such a great impression for foreign investment, but the truth be known, we have a flair for highly skilled pharmaceutical people! We have adopted the industry nearly as our own and have further educated ourselves into this niche market.

Barry O’ Leary Chief Executive of the IDA strongly pointed out the importance of protecting the reputation of Ireland for foreign investment from mult-national pharmaceutical companies “We are now home to 9 out of the top 10 global pharmaceutical companies. Ireland is a key global location for pharmaceutical activities”

At the opening of the Euronext/ NYSE stock exchange in Paris, Finance Minister Michael Noon expressed that our economy would “take off like a rocket” if the rest of the world’s economy improves. Mr Noonan also commented on Irish exports “surging to record levels on the back of a significant bound in our national competitiveness.”

“Ireland is now Europe’s best project for a programme country to return to the bond market, which is what we intend to do in 2012/2013”

As always in Ireland, we must strive to put our best foot forward. We accepted the global biopharmaceutical corporations with open arms and have managed to excel in the process. We do specialise in the Sciences and with Research and Development in constant flow we stand to excel at R&D too!

There will be changes in Biopharma in Ireland to come, but if we put positive thinking into it we can adapt and excel all over again.
