After spending an entire day at Gotemba Premium Outlets, Dormy Inn Gotemba was the perfect place to crash for the night. The hotel's proximity to the outlets meant we could literally shop till we dropped without worrying about a long drive back.

Easy Parking for Self-Drive Travellers

One thing we immediately appreciated was the huge parking lot. Plenty of space, easy access and absolutely no stress finding a spot after returning from a shopping marathon.

For anyone doing a self-drive trip around the Fuji area, that's a big plus.

The Room

The biggest highlight of the room?

A king-size bed.

This was actually the first hotel during our trip where we got to enjoy a proper king-size bed, and after days of travelling and walking, it felt amazing to spread out and sleep comfortably.

The room was spacious, clean, functional and had everything we needed.

Freebies That Everyone Loves

Dormy Inn is famous for its complimentary perks, and this branch was no exception.

Guests can enjoy:

Free late-night ramen
Free ice cream after the onsen
Complimentary drinks

The free ramen is a nice touch if you're feeling peckish at night. Taste-wise, I'd say it was just average. Nice to have, but not something I'd rave about.

The free ice cream, however, was much more enjoyable and made a great post-onsen treat.

The Onsen

After walking around the outlets all day carrying shopping bags, soaking in the onsen felt like exactly what our tired legs needed.

Nothing particularly luxurious, but definitely a solid and relaxing experience.

Overall Thoughts

Dormy Inn Gotemba was one of the most practical stays of our trip.

Its location near Gotemba Premium Outlets, ample parking, comfortable king-size bed and generous complimentary snacks made it a great value stop for shoppers and self-drive travellers alike.

Ubuya: Luxury, Quietness and a Mt Fuji That Never Showed Up

Checking into Ubuya felt like a small achievement in itself. The ryokan is notoriously difficult to book due to its the picture stunning views of Mount Fuji rising above Lake Kawaguchi.

After all, the ryokan is designed so that every room faces the mountain and lake., so I was really looking forward to this stay.

Unfortunately, we arrived during a period when the property was undergoing renovations (we are pre-notified during booking). As a result, many of the facilities were unavailable. During our stay, the main facilities we could access were the onsen and massage chairs. The good thing was that despite the ongoing works, we could hardly hear any renovation noise at night, so it didn't affect our sleep or overall comfort.

One thing that stood out during check-in was the service. After parking our car at the designated car park, staff personally drove us to the hotel. The service remained excellent throughout our stay. The staff were attentive, friendly and professional, making us feel well taken care of from arrival.

The Room

Our room was massive.

We booked a room with a private onsen, and it quickly became our favourite part of the stay. The room felt spacious, comfortable and incredibly peaceful. Everything about Ubuya feels quiet and serene.

Even the public onsen was surprisingly uncrowded. During one of my visits, there were only two other guests there, which made the experience feel almost like a private bath.

The Mt Fuji Situation

Of course, one of the biggest reasons for staying at Ubuya is the famous Mount Fuji view.

Sadly, the weather had other plans.

When we arrived, Fuji was nowhere to be seen. Still hopeful, I woke up early the next morning and immediately checked the window to see whether the fog had cleared.

Nope.

In fact, it was even worse than the day before. 😓

After staring at a wall of fog for a few minutes, I accepted defeat and went back to sleep. I eventually woke up again for breakfast before enjoying a slow morning and checking out at 11am.

As much as we wished for that postcard-perfect view seeing Japan's most famous mountain is never guaranteed. Long-term visibility records show that Mount Fuji is fully visible only around one-third of the time on average, with weather conditions playing a huge role.

Looks like Mount Fuji simply wasn't in the mood to meet us this trip.

Food

The meals were very good. Everything was beautifully presented, interesting and delicious.

That said, nothing really stood out as a particular "wow" dish that I would still be thinking about months later. The overall standard was high, but there wasn't a signature item that stole the show.

One unexpected highlight was that we had an entire dining room to ourselves, which made the experience feel extra special and intimate.

Anniversary Surprise

As we were celebrating our anniversary, the hotel thoughtfully arranged commemorative photos and even gifted us a bottle of wine. It was a lovely gesture and one of those small touches that made the stay feel memorable.

The Only Minor Disappointment

My only little "bubu" came during check-out.

Since the staff had chauffeured us from the car park to the hotel during check-in, I naturally assumed a similar service would be offered when we left. Instead, we were simply given directions to the car park, which was a fair distance away.

It's a small issue, but because the arrival experience was so seamless, I had expected the same level of service at departure.

Overall Thoughts

Even without the famous Mount Fuji view and despite the ongoing renovations, Ubuya was still a very pleasant stay.

The quiet atmosphere, spacious room, private onsen, attentive service and thoughtful anniversary touches made it memorable. Would I love to return someday when the renovations are complete and the weather is clearer?

Absolutely.

Because let's be honest, I still need to meet Mount Fuji.

Glamping at TOCORO Mt. Fuji Camp & Glamping: Camping for Beginners

When planning our trip to Kawaguchiko, I knew I wanted to experience glamping at least once. Traditional camping sounded a little too adventurous for me, and since neither of us had any camping experience, glamping felt like the ideal way to enjoy the outdoors while still having a proper bed, heating and modern facilities.

TOCORO. Mt.Fuji CAMP & GLAMPING seemed like the perfect compromise. Nestled in a forest near Lake Kawaguchiko, the property offers a camping experience with many tents enjoying views of Mount Fuji, all while providing comforts that regular camping simply doesn't.

Arrival Day: Rain, Rain and More Rain

Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans for us.

It was a wet and rainy day when we arrived. Even so, TOCORO still felt like stepping into a peaceful nature retreat. The white tents scattered throughout the forest looked charming against the misty backdrop, creating an almost fairytale-like atmosphere.

We booked one of the more affordable options for two people, the Premium Bell Tent 3, which promised views of Mount Fuji. Sadly, the famous mountain never made an appearance. Between the rain, clouds and poor visibility, there was no sign of Fuji on either arrival day or the following morning.

Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed. One of the main reasons for choosing TOCORO was the chance to wake up to a Mount Fuji view, but weather is one thing no accommodation can control.

The Tent

The bell tent was cosy, although slightly tighter than I expected. Thankfully, there was a heater because the temperature dropped quite a bit at night.

The heater, however, became a bit of an adventure on its own.

It runs on gas and seemed to develop an error after being used continuously for two to three hours. Thinking we could manage without it, we switched to the one-hour timer mode before sleeping.

Big mistake.

Throughout the night, I woke up several times absolutely drenched in sweat as the temperature fluctuated. By 3 a.m., I finally gave up and turned the heater back on normally. Sure enough, by around 7 a.m., the error message appeared again.

Not exactly the most restful night's sleep.

Shared Facilities

One thing potential guests should know is that the toilets and shower facilities are shared among all guests, with separate sections for men and women.

This wasn't a problem during the day, but at night it meant climbing down the outdoor steps in the dark whenever nature called. If you're expecting a fully private glamping setup, this is something worth noting.

That said, the facilities were clean and functional.

Excellent Service Recovery

What impressed me most was the staff's response to the heater issue.

To make up for the inconvenience, they offered us the use of the bonfire heater free of charge the following morning. It was a thoughtful gesture and showed that they genuinely cared about the guest experience.

Good service can make a huge difference, and TOCORO scored points with us for how they handled the situation.

Dinner BBQ Experience

One of the highlights of glamping is getting to cook your own meal, and TOCORO makes this very beginner-friendly.

Instructions were provided, so even first-time campers like us could figure things out without much stress. It felt like camping without the hard work. The accommodation prepares everything beforehand, and guests simply cook and assemble the food themselves.

As for the food itself, it was a mixed bag.

The BBQ meats were fairly standard and didn't particularly wow us. However, there were a couple of dishes we really enjoyed:

Toasted bread with creamy Camembert cheese

Le Creuset baked herb chicken

Those dishes felt a little more special and elevated the dining experience beyond a simple BBQ.

The dinner is made even better by the mini bon fire we set up ourselves in the ourdoor terrace through the night.

Breakfast Was Better

Personally, I enjoyed breakfast more than dinner.

There was granola with yoghurt, bread that we could toast ourselves, and ingredients to assemble our own breakfast muffins. We were also able to grind coffee beans and make our own drip coffee.

There was something satisfying about preparing breakfast in the cool morning air, even if Mount Fuji remained hidden behind thick clouds.

It felt like camping, just with all the ingredients thoughtfully prepared for you. We still got the fun of cooking and making our own food without any of the planning, shopping or cleanup that comes with actual camping.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes travel doesn't go exactly as planned, but sleeping in a tent surrounded by nature and making our own breakfast the next morning still made for a memorable experience. Hopefully next time, Mount Fuji will decide to make an appearance.

Apple Pie, Monkey Lattes & A Post-Hike Break at ENZA Café

If you're planning a visit to Jigokudani Yaen Koen (Snow Monkey Park), ENZA Café is arguably the best place to stop before or after the monkey walk. Conveniently located right at the entrance of the forest trail leading to the park, it's hard to miss and makes for a perfect rest stop.

We dropped by after visiting the snow monkeys and only then realised that the café actually has indoor seating. Since we hadn't noticed that earlier, we ended up ordering from the outdoor terrace section, which operates more like a takeaway counter. The terrace was still a pleasant place to sit and enjoy a snack while soaking in the fresh mountain air.

Food & Drinks

The star of the show was undoubtedly the Nagano Apple Pie. Made with local apples, it had a flaky crust and a generous apple filling that wasn't overly sweet. It's easy to see why so many visitors recommend it.

Of course, we couldn't resist ordering the famous Monkey Latte, which comes topped with an adorable monkey-shaped marshmallow. Unfortunately, our photo opportunity was short-lived. The hubs enthusiastically dropped the marshmallow into the coffee, where it promptly capsized and dissolved beyond saving. So much for those Instagram-worthy pictures!

We also ordered the karaage, which was crispy, juicy and hit the spot after the walk to and from the monkey park.

I was also tempted by the café's selection of local apple products, including apple beer, apple wine and apple-flavoured treats that showcase Nagano's famous apples. However, the apple beverages came in rather large glass bottles. I wasn't confident I could finish one through the trip, nor did I fancy trying to bring a fragile glass bottle all the way home, so I reluctantly gave them a pass.

Overall Thoughts

The food was good, the atmosphere was relaxing, and the location couldn't be more convenient, especially since it's close to the parking area. After trekking through the forest to see the famous snow monkeys, having a warm drink and a slice of apple pie at ENZA Café felt like a well-earned reward.

Kusatsu Onsen: Yumomi Performance and a Relaxing Stay at 湯宿季の庭 Yuyado Tokinoniwa

The Scenic Drive to Kusatsu

One of the unexpected highlights of the day was actually the drive to Kusatsu.

We drove along National Route 292, and the scenery was absolutely stunning. The winding mountain roads offered beautiful views at every turn, and we found ourselves making multiple stops just to admire the landscape and take photos. It was one of those drives where the journey felt just as enjoyable as the destination.

From the scenery and surroundings, I believe we were passing through one of the ski resort areas. Although there wasn't any snow during our visit, it was easy to imagine how lively and picturesque the region would be in winter.

Unfortunately, we couldn't complete the entire route as planned. Due to volcanic activity, part of the highway has been closed, and our navigation rerouted us downhill midway through the journey. While it was a little disappointing not to experience the full route, the detour still provided plenty of spectacular mountain views.

Watching the Yumomi Performance

After leaving the Snow Monkey Park, we made our way to Kusatsu Onsen and arrived at around 4:25 PM, just in time to catch the famous Yumomi performance.

Traditionally, the hot spring water in Kusatsu is too hot for bathing, so long wooden paddles are used to cool the water without diluting it. During the The Yumomi show, the staff demonstrate this process while singing traditional songs and rhythmically stirring the steaming water.
The tickets were reasonably priced, and it was interesting to learn about this unique local tradition. However, if I'm being honest, it did feel a little like a tourist attraction designed primarily for visitors. I'm glad we experienced it once, but it wasn't the highlight of our time in Kusatsu.
Checking into Yuyado Tokinoniwa

After the show, we checked into Yuyado Tokinoniwa 湯宿季の庭 , a ryokan-style hotel that is clearly quite old but offers an impressive level of service.

The first thing that caught our attention was the beautiful garden. It was well-maintained and created a peaceful atmosphere that immediately made us feel like we had escaped the busy sightseeing schedule of the past few days.

The hotel facilities were excellent. There are separate public baths for men and women, which switch sides the following morning so guests can experience both bath areas. There are also private onsen baths available on a first-come, first-served basis, which is a nice option for those who prefer a more private experience.

One thing we really appreciated was the continuous hospitality throughout the day. Complimentary coffee, drinks, and late-night snacks were available, making the stay feel very welcoming and comfortable.

The room itself was much larger than we expected.

It featured a kitchenette, a tatami living area, and a separate sleeping space, giving us plenty of room to relax. Some room categories even come with a private in-room onsen, allowing guests to enjoy the hot spring experience without leaving their room.

After several days of driving, sightseeing, and walking, the extra space was something we really appreciated.

Dinner and Breakfast

Dinner was a Wagyu beef set meal, which was enjoyable and beautifully presented. That said, we couldn't help comparing it to the amazing dinner we had on our first night of the trip, which remains our favourite meal so far.

Even so, the quality of the food was good, and both dinner and breakfast were satisfying. The ryokan clearly takes pride in its dining experience, and having meals included added to the convenience of the stay.

A Quick Stop at Yubatake

The next morning, after checking out at 11:00 AM, we made a quick stop at Kusatsu's main town area and the iconic Yubatake for some photos.

Steam rising from the hot spring channels creates the classic Kusatsu scenery that appears in so many travel brochures. Even though our stop was brief, it was the perfect way to end our visit before continuing to our next destination.

Matsumoto Food Guide: French Cuisine, Izakaya Dishes & Three-Way Soba

Dinner at Matsumoto 萬来 Banrai, Matsumoto

For dinner in Matsumoto, we visited Banrai, a very popular local restaurant known for its extensive menu and unique Japanese delicacies.

One of the signature dishes we tried was the Zuku Karaage (fried chicken). The meat was quite thick and on the drier side, with a flavour profile that reminded me of lemon chicken. It had a peppery, slightly tangy taste that was enjoyable, although the texture wasn't my favourite. The skin, however, was excellent, crispy and savoury, with a flavour that oddly reminded me of agedashi tofu.

Speaking of tofu, the agedashi tofu was one of the highlights of the meal. Lightly crisp on the outside and silky inside, it was comforting and well-executed.

We also ordered the egg with whitebait. The egg was soft, fluffy, and slightly runny, giving it a smooth, melt-in-your-mouth texture. The seasoning was delicate, allowing the natural flavours of the whitebait to come through.

For sashimi, both the maguro (tuna) and salmon were fresh and satisfying. Sometimes simple dishes are the best way to appreciate good-quality ingredients.

What makes Banrai particularly interesting is its adventurous menu. Beyond the usual izakaya offerings, there are more unusual items such as insect pupae and other exotic local delicacies, making it a fun place for diners who enjoy trying something different.

Overall, while not every dish was a standout, Banrai offered a memorable dining experience with its wide variety of food, lively atmosphere, and unique menu. If you're looking for a popular local restaurant in Matsumoto and are feeling adventurous, it's worth adding to your list.

Tea at 竹風堂松本中町店 (Chikufudo Matsumoto Nakamachi)

After spending the afternoon exploring the historic streets of Matsumoto, we were looking for somewhere warm to escape the cold and rest our feet. That's when we came across 竹風堂松本中町店.

What first caught our attention was the beautiful pastry display. Everything looked so attractive that we couldn't resist stopping for tea. Unfortunately, the pastry didn't quite live up to expectations. While it looked delicious, the taste was rather average and ended up being one of those desserts that looked better than it tasted.

Thankfully, the latte was good and exactly what we needed after being out in the cold. Smooth, comforting, and perfect for a leisurely afternoon break.

While I wouldn't personally return just for the pastries, the café's cosy atmosphere makes it a lovely place to sit down, warm up, and take a break from sightseeing. Sometimes, it's not about having the best food, but finding a comfortable spot to slow down and enjoy the moment. For that, 竹風堂松本中町店 was a pleasant stop during our time in Matsumoto

Quick Stop atとろり天使のわらびもち松本店 Torori Tenshi no Warabi-mochi

While walking around Matsumoto, we made a quick stop at とろり天使のわらびもち松本店 for a taste of their famous warabi mochi.

The highlight was definitely the texture. The warabi mochi was incredibly soft, smooth, and almost melt-in-your-mouth, living up to the shop's "torori" (creamy and silky) name. It was light, refreshing, and made for a nice snack between sightseeing stops.

The only downside is that seating is quite limited, so it's not really a place to linger for long. Most visitors seem to grab their treats and go, especially during busier periods.
Overall, if you're in Matsumoto and looking for a quick sweet treat, Torori Tenshi no Warabi-mochi is worth trying for its wonderfully soft warabi mochi texture alone.

A Surprise French Lunch in Matsumoto: Restaurant Aquri

After exploring Matsumoto Castle and strolling through the charming old shopping streets, we started looking for lunch around 1:30 PM. We had a few restaurants bookmarked, but to our surprise, several were closed despite Google showing they were open. Hungry and running out of options, we decided to walk into Restaurant Aquri (Agrie), a cosy French-style restaurant in the city centre.

What started as a backup plan turned into one of the most memorable meals of our trip.

I ordered the spaghetti, which was drizzled with pumpkin sauce. It sounded like an unusual combination at first, but it worked beautifully. The pumpkin added a subtle sweetness and creaminess that complemented the pasta perfectly. The dish was simple, comforting, and surprisingly refined.

The real standout, however, was the sourdough bread. The crust was wonderfully crisp, while the inside was soft and fluffy, almost like a freshly baked bun. It was the kind of bread that keeps you reaching for another bite.

The experience was made even better by the warm hospitality. The staff were attentive and welcoming, and the relaxed atmosphere provided a much-needed break after a busy morning of sightseeing. It was easy to see why diners would linger over coffee and dessert.

Restaurant Aquri wasn't part of our original itinerary, but sometimes the best travel experiences are the unplanned ones. If you're visiting Matsumoto, don't be afraid to step into a restaurant on a whim. You might just discover a hidden gem like we did.

Dinner at Miyota: A Unique Soba Experience Worth the Wait

One of our most memorable meals in the Matsumoto area was at Miyota, a highly popular soba restaurant known for its unique three-way soba experience.

We arrived at around 6:30 PM and joined the queue, finally getting a table about an hour later at 7:30 PM. The wait was long, but judging by the steady stream of customers, it's clearly a favourite among both locals and visitors. A word of warning: the restaurant closes early, and shortly after we were seated, no more diners were admitted.

Originally, we planned to order different dishes. I wanted to try the restaurant's signature three-way soba, while my husband was interested in the ebi tempura soba. However, we were told that if we wanted the three-way experience, both of us would need to order the same set. Since it was their specialty, we decided to go for it.

Three Ways to Enjoy Soba

The meal begins with a hot pot of broth and fresh soba noodles.

First way: Place the soba into a ladle, dip it into the hot broth for about three seconds, then remove it and enjoy it together with a spoonful of the soup. This lightly cooks the noodles while allowing their texture and flavour to shine.

Second way: This was my favourite. Tiny soba grains, almost the size of rice, are added into the remaining broth to create a soba porridge. An egg is then stirred in, creating something closer to a soft scrambled egg than an egg drop soup. The result is comforting, silky, and packed with flavour from the broth.

Third way: Enjoy the soba traditionally by dipping it into the accompanying sauce. At the end of the meal, hot water is added to the dipping sauce and served like a light tea, allowing you to savour every last bit of flavour.

Side Dishes

Besides the soba set, we ordered several side dishes, including the kakiage vegetable fritters and a mixed tempura platter. Everything was well-executed, with light and crispy batter that complemented rather than overwhelmed the ingredients.

What surprised us most was how filling the meal was. At first glance, it didn't seem like a particularly large dinner, but by the end we were absolutely stuffed.

The one-hour wait may not be for everyone, but for us, it was worth it. If you're visiting the Matsumoto area, arrive early, as queues form quickly and the restaurant stops admitting diners once it's full.

Visiting Jigokudani Yaen Koen Snow Monkey Park in Autumn - is it worth the trip?

After a relatively relaxed day, it was time for another chiong day, this time to Jigokudani Yaen Koen (Snow Monkey Park).

Getting there wasn't exactly effortless. From the entrance, it's about a 40-minute walk through the forest before reaching the monkey viewing area. The trail itself is easy enough, but it felt much longer because Mister was taking his own sweet time after I broke the news that there was a chance we might not see any monkeys at all that day!

His disappointment was understandable. We had heard that for the past week, there hadn't been any monkeys at the park, so expectations were already quite low before we even started the hike. As it turned out, we were actually very fortunate.

When we finally arrived, there were no large groups of monkeys soaking in the famous hot springs that appear in all the postcards and travel photos. But after a bit of searching, we managed to spot three snow monkeys roaming around the area. They occasionally stopped to observe visitors, but none of them showed any interest in taking an onsen bath.

While chatting with the staff and learning more about the monkeys, we discovered that autumn isn't the best season for seeing them at the park. This is their mating and food-gathering season, as they prepare for the long winter ahead. During this period, they tend to stay higher up in the mountains and have little reason to come down to the hot spring area.

The three monkeys we saw weren't part of a larger troop either. They were more like solo rangers. We learned that female monkeys usually remain within family groups, while males are more likely to roam independently. Although a troop may contain a few adult males, solitary monkeys are generally males living outside the main family group.

When the main troop does come down, it's an entirely different scene. A single group can consist of close to a hundred monkeys, filling the area with activity as they groom one another, search for food, play, and occasionally soak in the hot springs.

Although we didn't get the iconic snow-monkey-in-an-onsen photo, the visit was still memorable. Knowing that there had been no monkey sightings for the previous week, we felt lucky just to see three of them. The forest walk was beautiful, the surroundings were peaceful, and spotting these wild animals in their natural habitat made the trek worthwhile.

Sometimes travel doesn't give you the postcard-perfect moment you were hoping for. Instead, it gives you a better story. In our case, it was a 40-minute hike and three independent monkeys who clearly had more important things to do than entertain tourists in a hot spring.

Matsumoto Castle is one of the highlights of central Japan and easily one of the most impressive castles I've visited. The castle's iconic black exterior, which has earned it the nickname "Crow Castle," is particularly striking. Surrounded by a peaceful moat, it offers some of the most picturesque castle views in the country. The reflection of the castle on the water creates fantastic photo opportunities from almost every angle.

One interesting feature of Matsumoto Castle is its architecture. Although from the outside it appears to be a five-storey castle, it actually has six floors. This hidden floor was designed as part of the castle's defensive structure, making the building appear smaller than it really was.

Inside, the castle feels surprisingly original and atmospheric. The steep wooden staircases, narrow passages, and exposed timber beams provide a glimpse into what life may have been like during Japan's feudal era. Unlike modern museums with extensive displays, the experience here is more about appreciating the architecture and imagining the castle's defensive role. Visitors should be prepared for steep climbs and low ceilings, but these features add to the castle's character.

The climb becomes progressively more challenging as you ascend through the castle. The final staircase between the 5th and 6th floors was by far the steepest and most difficult section of the tour. Visitors should be prepared to take their time, especially during busy periods when queues can form inside the castle. In total, the castle tour took approximately 50 minutes, which felt just right for appreciating both the architecture and the history.

For those who have visited Himeji Castle, the interior experience will feel somewhat similar, with its steep staircases and preserved wooden structure. While Himeji is grander in scale, Matsumoto offers a more intimate atmosphere and arguably more dramatic scenery thanks to its beautiful mountain backdrop.

One minor disappointment during my visit was that the Tsukimi Yagura (Moon Viewing Tower) was undergoing restoration works. As one of the castle's unique and elegant features, it would have been wonderful to see it in its full glory. However, the ongoing preservation efforts are understandable and important to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy this historic landmark.

One feature I particularly enjoyed was the display near the exit showcasing castles from all over Japan. It was a great way to discover other castles and gave me ideas for future trips. I found myself mentally creating a list of castles I would like to visit next. One that immediately caught my attention was the famous "Castle in the Sky", Takeda Castle Ruins, which sits dramatically above the clouds when conditions are right. Even though it is now a ruin, it looks absolutely breathtaking and has moved high up on my Japan travel wishlist.

Overall, Matsumoto Castle is a must-visit for anyone interested in Japanese history, architecture, or photography. Despite the restoration work on the Tsukimi Yagura during my visit, the castle's authenticity, distinctive appearance, and beautiful setting made it one of the most memorable attractions of my Japan trip. During our stay in Matsumoto, we chose Super Hotel Matsumoto Ekimae スーパーホテル松本駅前 a practical hotel located just a few minutes' walk from Matsumoto Station. We weren't looking for anything luxurious — just a clean, comfortable place for the night before continuing our journey. In that respect, the hotel delivered exactly what we needed.

Excellent Location

One of the biggest advantages of this hotel is its location.

Being close to Matsumoto Station made it easy to:

Walk to nearby restaurants and convenience stores
Explore the city centre
Leave early the next morning without any hassle

Although we were driving, having everything within walking distance was still very convenient.

Parking

The hotel parking is chargeable, but this wasn't an issue for us.

The parking area is shared among several hotels in the vicinity, and despite arriving by car, we had no difficulty finding a lot. Considering how convenient the location is near Matsumoto Station, I thought the parking arrangement worked quite well.

Welcome Drinks & Wine Bar

One of the highlights of the stay was the complimentary welcome drinks and evening wine bar available until 9 pm.

Naturally, I had to try a little of everything.

There was a good selection of sake and other alcoholic beverages available. Most of the sake served was surprisingly easy to drink, even for someone who doesn't regularly drink sake.

The most memorable drink was probably the sweet potato wine. Unfortunately, memorable doesn't always mean good. It had a rather unusual taste that wasn't quite for me, but I'm glad I tried it anyway. The other drinks were much more enjoyable and made for a relaxing evening after a day of travelling.

The Room

ALike many Japanese business hotels, the room wasn't huge, but it was clean, comfortable and efficiently designed.

One thing I really liked was the choice of additional pillows available at the lobby. Guests can select a pillow that suits their preferred firmness and height, which is a nice feature that not many hotels offer.

As for our room, we were assigned a bunk bed setup, which I actually enjoyed more than expected. It felt a little different from the typical hotel room and added a fun element to the stay. The bed was comfortable and we slept well.

Amenities

The hotel provides a variety of individual amenity packets for guests to pick up from the lobby.

My favourite was definitely the face mask. After spending long days outdoors and travelling, it was a nice little treat before bed.

It's a small touch, but one that made the stay feel more thoughtful.

Final Thoughts

Super Hotel Matsumoto Ekimae isn't a luxury hotel, but it offers excellent value and a comfortable stay.

Morning Start: A Simple In-Room Breakfast

Since we planned to head out early to Kamikochi, we kept breakfast simple.

The night before, we bought some bread from a local bakery (honestly can’t remember the name), and had it in our room the next morning. I paired it with the Yirgacheffe coffee I brought from home, which turned out to be such a good decision — smooth, fragrant, and comforting.

Although the hotel had basic amenities available for use, they didn’t provide coffee or tea in the room, which was a bit surprising. Our room also didn’t include breakfast, but that wasn’t a big issue since there were still options outside if needed.

That said, I really enjoyed this quiet little breakfast moment — simple, but peaceful before a full day out.

Trip to Kamikochi: Not Quite According to Plan

According to my original plan, we were supposed to: 👉 start at Taisho Pond
👉 then walk one-way towards the bus pick-up point

But… I completely forgot everything I planned

We arrived at the parking area and noticed that everyone was getting off at Taisho Pond. At that point I was honestly confused, but stubbornly thought:
“No, we should go to the Visitor Center first.”

So we stayed on the bus and continued to the Kamikochi Visitor Center.

In the end, we accidentally turned our route into a round trip:

Visitor Center → Taisho Pond
Then Taisho Pond → back to Visitor Center

Thankfully, it worked out perfectly.

Starting the Walk: Visitor Center

We began our walk from the Visitor Center, where the air immediately felt crisp and fresh.

One of the things I loved most about Kamikochi is that it is completely car-free. No traffic, no engine noise — just nature. It really makes a difference to the overall experience, making the whole place feel calm and unspoiled.

The trail towards Taisho Pond is:

Flat and easy
Well-marked
Suitable for anyone, even if you’re not into hiking

The Walk: Quiet and Refreshing

The route felt incredibly peaceful. Compared to busier spots like Kappa Bridge, this stretch was much quieter.

Along the way, we passed:

Occasional open views of the mountains

It didn’t feel like a “hike” — more like a slow, mindful walk.

Autumn (Not Quite There Yet)

When we visited, the autumn colours hadn’t fully peaked yet.

At first glance, I thought it came with curry sauce —
but it turned out to be a tomato-based sauce instead.

Honestly, the food was just okay — but at that moment, it didn’t matter.

What made it good was: 👉 Having a warm, hearty meal

in the middle of a cold day

And that alone made it satisfying.

Taisho Pond: The Highlight

When we finally reached Taisho Pond, it was absolutely worth it.

Even without peak autumn colours, this place stood out.

What I loved most was the reflection:

The mountains mirrored perfectly on the water
Trees reflected so clearly it almost looked like a painting
The stillness made everything feel surreal

We spent quite a bit of time here just soaking it all in.

Walking Back: Different Path, Different Feel

Even though we walked the same route back, it didn’t feel repetitive at all. This time, we were on the opposite bank, which gave us a slightly different perspective — new angles of the river, changing views of the trees, and a fresh way to take in the scenery.

The last leg was a bit of a rush as we heighten our pace to catch the last bus before 3.30 pm to Akandana parking lot.

It may not have been perfect timing, and the return felt a little rushed, but Kamikochi was still a place worth experiencing — peaceful, scenic, and quietly memorable.

Hakusuien, Shirakawa-go lunch

Hakusuien came highly recommended by my husband’s friend, so naturally I went in with fairly high expectations. Located in the heart of Shirakawa-go, it’s a convenient and popular lunch spot, especially for tourists and tour groups. But after trying it myself… I’d say it was more “okay” than memorable.

The restaurant has a nice traditional setup, with tatami-style seating and a classic countryside feel. It does give you that “I’m eating in Shirakawa-go” experience, which is part of the charm.

Food Experience

The Highlight: Hida Beef on Magnolia Leaf 飛騨牛朴葉味噌

We each ordered the Hida beef cooked on a magnolia leaf with miso teishoku, which is one of their signature dishes.

The beef itself was tender and flavourful
The miso added a nice smoky, savoury taste

That said, it didn’t quite live up to expectations. Also, I accidentally left the beef on the leaf for too long and it ended up getting burnt, so do keep an eye on it if you order this!

The serving is huge as each set come with both rice and noodle (soba/udon)

Other Dishes We Tried

We also ordered a few ala carte items:

Grilled Japanese pork
Cold tofu

These were decent, but again, nothing particularly impressive. Just simple, standard dishes that didn’t stand out.

Honestly, I can see why Hakusuien is popular:

Shirakawa-go: Inside Japan’s Living World Heritage Village

Tucked away in the remote mountains of Gifu Prefecture, Shirakawa-go feels like a place frozen in time. With its steep thatched-roof farmhouses, misty valleys, and slow rural pace, visiting this UNESCO World Heritage village is less about ticking off a sightseeing spot and more about stepping gently into Japan’s past.

A Glimpse into History

Shirakawa-go’s history stretches back over 1,000 years, shaped largely by its isolated geography. Heavy snowfall in winter once cut the village off from the outside world, forcing residents to become self-sufficient and tightly knit as a community.

The village is most famous for its gasshō-zukuri houses, a traditional architectural style named after hands pressed together in prayer. These steeply slanted roofs were designed to prevent heavy snow from accumulating and collapsing the structure. Remarkably, the roofs are built without nails, relying instead on intricate wooden joinery.

Historically, these large homes housed extended families and supported silk farming. The spacious attics were used for cultivating silkworms, which became a crucial source of income during the Edo period.

Walking Through Ogimachi Village

Walking through Ogimachi Village is a relaxing experience, with scenic paths passing rice fields, wooden bridges, and traditional gasshō-zukuri houses that are still lived in today. Taking time to wander beyond the main streets allows you to appreciate the quieter, more authentic side of the village.

If you can only visit one interior site, I would strongly recommend Myozenji Temple. It is a five-storey gasshō-zukuri-style building, making it one of the most distinctive structures in Shirakawa-go. Historically, this was where the chief priest of a Buddhist temple and his family lived, giving it both religious and residential significance.

The interior of Myozenji Temple focuses mainly on the village’s farming life, with displays of agricultural tools and everyday living materials. Like all houses in Shirakawa-go, there is a large central area with a hearth stove using coal fire. The wooden shutters, decorated with motifs such as storks and trees, are especially beautiful.

In the reception room, the hearth fire is kept lit throughout the day to keep the coals alive. Above it hangs a hiama, a board-and-room structure designed to extinguish sparks from the open fire, which has been in use for over 200 years. If you only have time to visit one place, Myozenji Temple is the one to choose.

Among the farmhouses, Kanda House is worth visiting. It has three levels, although the final level is no longer accessible. The first level serves as the living area, while the accessible upper levels showcase kitchenware, previously worn gear, forestry and carpentry tools, a traditional fireplace, and sake-making displays with clear illustrations. It gives a fairly good overview of traditional village life.

Wada House, however, was my least favourite. While the first-floor living area is still decent, from level two onwards the house felt like it had fallen into disrepair. This was surprising, given that it is often described as one of the largest and best-preserved gasshō-zukuri houses. Personally, it did not live up to that reputation when compared with other interiors in the village.

The View That Captures It All

One viewpoint I would highly recommend is the Shiroyama Tenshukaku Observation Deck. The view from the top is absolutely worth it and offers a stunning panoramic look over the entire village, with the gasshō-zukuri rooftops framed beautifully by the surrounding mountains. It’s easy to see why Shirakawa-go is often described as a living postcard of rural Japan.

Unless you really enjoy hiking, I strongly suggest taking the shuttle bus instead. At the time of writing, it costs 300 yen, but it saves a lot of time and energy—especially if you’re on a tight schedule or visiting during peak seasons. Personally, I found this totally worth it, as the view from the top is one of the highlights of Shirakawa-go which is described as a living postcard of rural Japan.

What to Eat & Drink in Shirakawa-go

While Shirakawa-go is best known for its scenery and history, there are also a few local treats worth trying. One standout is the Gohei Mochi Pudding, a signature, localized dessert created by Shirakawago Purin no Ie (Pudding House).

Inspired by gohei mochi—a skewer of grilled rice smothered in a sweet miso glaze made with walnut or sesame—the shop translates these familiar flavours into a rich, creamy pudding served in a cute glass jar. Another dessert is layered jelly with pudding, with jelly at the bottom and pudding on top. Once you start eating, the jelly and pudding gradually separate, giving the dessert a changing texture that makes it surprisingly fun to eat.

We also made a short stop at Ochudo for drinks and ended up spending some time there. Guests can choose their own cups and saucers for their drinks, which I felt was a really nice and thoughtful touch. It adds warmth to the experience and fits perfectly with the village’s slow, unhurried atmosphere.

This is me. Rounding up the visit at shirakawago with ice cream at Shirakawago Purin no Ie (Pudding House).

Final Thoughts

Shirakawa-go is a reminder that progress doesn’t always mean leaving the past behind. In this small mountain village, history, architecture, daily life, and even food coexist beautifully, making it one of Japan’s most meaningful and memorable destinations.

What made this meal feel more special was how it echoed something we had just experienced earlier in the day—Hida beef cooked on a magnolia leaf.

At first, it felt like just a unique way of cooking. But the more we saw it around Takayama and Shirakawa-go, the more it started to feel like a reflection of the region itself.

Traditionally, in the mountainous Hida region, people cooked with what they had on hand—and magnolia leaves were abundant. Instead of metal plates, these large leaves were placed over open flames, topped with miso and whatever ingredients were available. Over time, this evolved into the signature hoba miso style, now often paired with premium Hida beef.

As the leaf heats up, the miso slowly caramelises while the beef cooks gently on top. There’s a subtle earthy aroma from the leaf, mixed with the rich, savoury sweetness of the beef—simple, but deeply comforting.

This time, we also managed to cook the beef better, not overcooking it like before, and it really made a difference—the beef turned out more tender and overall more enjoyable.

Final Verdict

飛騨米屋食事処 isn’t somewhere you necessarily plan your itinerary around.
But in our case, it turned out to be exactly what we needed.
Not exceptional, not curated—but warm, reliable, and unexpectedly memorable.

We arrived at Takayama at 6 pm and head out for dinner to Menya Shirakawa Annex around 7pm and were pleasantly surprised—no queue at all, which already felt like a small win. Service was quick and efficient, and the staff were genuinely friendly and welcoming. Bonus points for having an English menu, which makes ordering easy for non-Japanese diners.

Menya Shirakawa serves Takayama ramen, a regional style from Gifu Prefecture. Unlike the heavier tonkotsu ramen many of us are used to, Takayama ramen features:

A soy sauce-based broth built on chicken stock
Enhanced with fish (bonito) and vegetables, simmered for hours
A darker, almost black-looking soup with deep umami flavour

We headed to Takayama and stayed at Amanek Hotel, a relatively new hotel that just opened in October 2025 and it definitely shows in the overall condition and design.

Rooms

The rooms were spacious (for Japan standards), very clean, modern, and tastefully furnished.
Everything felt new and well put together, with a modern aesthetic that made the stay comfortable and relaxing.

Facilities

One of the highlights is the onsen located on Level 9.

Includes a sauna and common bath area
There is also a mixed-gender section where bathing suits are required
A nice spot to unwind after a long day

The hotel also has a small lounge area with added perks:

Dango served from 7–9pm
Drinks available from 3–7pm

These little extras made the stay feel more thoughtful and enjoyable.

Parking

Parking is available at two locations, but it is first come, first served, so you may need to plan ahead if you’re driving. The second parking space is a walking distance from hotel.

Facilities (Laundry)

One downside was the limited laundry facilities:

Only 3 washing machines and 3 dryers

This can be insufficient, especially during peak travel periods when more guests are using them.

Amanek Takayama is a comfortable and stylish stay, especially if you’re driving and want something new with good facilities.

It may not be the most convenient for walking around major attractions, but the clean rooms, onsen, and thoughtful touches like free snacks make it a solid option overall.

Both couldn’t be more different, but each had its own charm.

I paired it with an umeshu soda, which turned out to be a great choice — refreshing with a slight sweetness that balanced the strong peppery kick nicely.

Fried Garlic Rice

This one was a bit underwhelming.
The rice lacked fragrance, especially for something labelled garlic fried rice, and the texture was slightly wet, which made it less satisfying overall.

Fried Squid

The taste reminded me of Old Chang Kee-style fried squid — crispy, familiar, and comforting. Nothing particularly fancy, but still enjoyable. I was told this is a seasonal item, so it may not always be available.

Cherongi Salad

This leaned heavily on one ingredient — spring onions.
There were only a few pieces of lettuce, along with some sesame seaweed, but overall it felt like a spring onion dish. The onions gave it a strong, slightly spicy bite, which might not be for everyone.

Fried Pork Skewer

This was… interesting, but not really my type.
The pork itself tasted quite plain with no marinade, making the flavour feel a bit one-dimensional. While it’s something different, it didn’t stand out compared to the other dishes.

Yamachan has a classic Japanese izakaya vibe — lively, noisy, and very social. It feels more like a place to hang out over drinks than a quiet dinner spot.

Pricing-wise, it’s generally reasonable for casual Japanese dining, making it a good option for group outings.

Tsubame Milk & Bread — Soft, Comforting & Simple

On another day, I visited Tsubame Milk & Bread, a very popular breakfast spot — and the crowd really showed it.

We arrived at 9:40am, got queue number 103, and there were already 64 people ahead of us. The queue was quite terrible, so we decided to skip dining in and go for takeaway instead.

One thing to note — the fluffy scrambled egg sandwich I wanted only starts selling at 11am, which was a bit disappointing.

In the end, we grabbed some off-the-shelf bread and coffee and just stood by the side of the road to eat. Not the most ideal situation, but at least we managed to try it.

Food

The bread itself was decent, though a bit different from what I expected.

Slightly more dense than typical soft milk bread, likely because it’s made using natural yeast

Texture-wise still soft, but with a bit more structure

How One Booking Mistake Changed Our Takayama Itinerary

Takayama was meant to be our base for visiting Shirakawa-go, but getting there didn’t go exactly as planned.

Originally, everything was supposed to be straightforward.
We had already booked and paid for the scenic train ride from Nagoya to Takayama — one of those slower journeys where you can just sit back and enjoy the countryside views.

But two weeks before the trip, we realised something was very wrong.

The Mistake

Our plan was to pick up a rental car and drive to Shirakawa-go from Takayama.

But when we double-checked the booking…
we realised we had selected the wrong car pickup location.

Instead of Takayama, the pickup point was Tateyama about 2 hours away.

At that point, there wasn’t much we could do:

The car booking couldn’t be easily changed
The location didn’t make sense with our train plan

So we had to rethink everything.

Last-Minute Change

With only two weeks to go, we made the call to cancel the train ride (which we had already paid for) and switch plans completely.

Instead of taking the scenic route, we decided to drive from Nagoya to Takayama.

Not ideal — but the only way to make the car logistics work.

The Drive Instead

The drive from Nagoya to Takayama turned out to be:

longer than expected
but still fairly straightforward

Even though we missed out on the train experience, driving gave us:

flexibility with timing
the convenience of having the car with us right away

Sometimes it’s less about the “perfect plan” and more about making things work.

Takayama as a Base

Despite the change, Takayama still worked well as a base for Shirakawa-go.

It’s a quieter town compared to bigger cities, but:

well-positioned for day trips
easy to navigate by car

Having a car also made it easier to move around without depending on bus timings.

This was one of those moments where:

planning didn’t go as expected
a small mistake snowballed into a full itinerary change

But in the end:

we still got to Takayama
we still made it to Shirakawa-go

Waking Up in Nagoya: Blue Bottle Coffee, Platform Kishimen, and a Perfect Hida Beef Dinner

Our Day 1 in Nagoya was powered almost entirely by food. After landing from a red‑eye flight and dropping our bags, we eased into the city the best way possible — with good coffee, comforting noodles, and an indulgent beef dinner.

Quick Meal: Kishimen at Sumiyoshi (Surprisingly Good!)

Our first proper meal of the trip was something truly local: Kishimen a classic Nagoya specialty at Sumiyoshi, located right on JR Nagoya Station’s Platform 3/4.

This spot is famous among commuters and travellers for its fast, flavourful, and affordable bowls. It’s a standing-only counter.

Most of the toppings here — like the prawns and beef — are ready‑made or frozen, something you’d expect from a train‑station eatery. But what surprised us was how good everything still tasted. The noodles were soft, silky, and a gentle bite, and the prawns/beef were satisfying despite being pre‑prepared.

The broth we had was a clear yuzu‑based soup, light yet fragrant, topped generously with bonito flakes that melted beautifully into the heat. Add a fried prawn on top, and the whole bowl became simple, comforting, and exactly the kind of warm, savoury start we needed after a red‑eye flight.

Sumiyoshi may be unassuming, but it delivered far more than we expected — a perfect introduction to Nagoya comfort food.

But first Coffee — Blue Bottle Coffee: Nagoya Gate Tower Mall Cafe

We stopped by Blue Bottle Coffee for a caffeine boost. This coffee out has a clean and minimalist aesthetic. Warm wood textures and soft lighting made it a calming spot even when you are jet-lagged.

I tried both the cappuccino and latte, available in blend or single origin.

Between the two, I preferred the single origin — it had a hint of brown sugar sweetness that made it feel naturally balanced and smoother on the palate. A lovely pick‑me‑up for the afternoon slump.

Dinner — Bakuroichidai Nagoya West (Premium Hida Beef Feast)

For dinner, we went big at Bakuroichidai Nagoya West, a well‑known restaurant that specialises in premium Hida beef, one of Japan’s most prized wagyu varieties. Reviews consistently highlight their beef for being buttery, tender, and melt‑in‑your‑mouth soft, with many diners praising the quality and overall dining experience.

This meal turned out to be one of the highlights of the day — beautifully prepared meats, thoughtful sauces, and unique small dishes that made the entire dinner memorable.
We are fortunate that we are ushered to a seat immediately despite making no reservations made in advance.

Starter: Bread with Foie Gras Sauce

The meal began with complimentary warm bread served alongside a light foie gras sauce.

The bread was perfectly crisp on the outside and fluffy inside, and the sauce added a delicate richness without being heavy. It also came with a small portion of cured meat — savoury, well‑seasoned, and a nice way to ease into the meal.

Mini Kenton Homemade Sausage

Next was the Mini Kenton sausage, made fresh in‑house.
This was unexpectedly one of the standouts — soft, juicy, and savoury with every bite. The mustard it came with was especially interesting: tiny pearl‑like grains that looked like caviar but tasted unmistakably like mustard. A fun texture and a delicious pairing.

Satori Top‑Level Special Meat Platter
Then came the star of the night: the Satori top‑level Hida beef platter.

Each cut was arranged from smaller pieces to larger slices, and honestly, each one somehow tasted better than the last. The beef was incredibly flavourful, tender, and melt‑in‑your‑mouth soft. The marbling gave every cut a rich yet elegant taste that didn’t feel overwhelming.
The platter came with a selection of sauces, each bringing out a different character in the beef:
Bakuro original sauce – sweet, savoury, and classic
Wasabi paste – a clean heat that brightens the meat
Lemon sauce – refreshing and perfect for cutting through richness
Broth with spring onions – lightens heavier cuts
Pink salt – simple but perfect for appreciating the meat’s natural flavour
We also had Korean lettuce leaves for wrapping, which helped balance the richness of the beef.

Onigiri with Shogun Stewed Hida Beef

The onigiri came filled with stewed Hida beef.
The flavour was nice, but compared to the rest of the dinner, this was a simpler dish — pleasant but not particularly memorable.

Bokuro Salad

The Bokuro salad came with two dressings:
a miso‑based sauce for the potatoes and lady fingers
a Japanese-style dressing for the mixed greens
It also included several cold cuts, all well‑marinated. While interesting, it wasn’t my favourite dish of the evening — the textures and flavours were a bit too varied for my liking.

Final Thoughts on Dinner

Bakuroichidai lived up to its reputation. The Hida beef truly stood out — rich, tender, and full of flavour — and the thoughtful starters made the meal feel complete. It was the perfect indulgent dinner for our first day in Nagoya, and a delicious way to end the night.
Day 1 was meant to be slow, but food has a way of making even a tired day feel full and memorable. From Blue Bottle’s calm morning vibes, to comforting noodles on the train platform, to one of the best beef dinners we’ve had — Nagoya welcomed us with warmth and flavour.

Exploring Nagoya: Nagoya Castle, Hitsumabushi, and the 71st Matsuri

1. Nagoya Castle — Pretty from the Outside, but Closed for Visitors

Nagoya Castle was having a free open‑house day due to the ongoing Nagoya Matsuri, which normally would be perfect — except the main castle tower has actually been closed to visitors since 2018. So even though the grounds were open, the interior wasn’t accessible.

We still walked around the exterior, and the castle is genuinely pretty from the outside. The combination of green roofs with its golden shachihoko shimmering and clean white walls, the entire castle looks very striking. It photographs beautifully and has a calm vibe despite the festival crowd.

As for the Honmaru Palace, it looked impressive and is well‑known for its gold leaf screens and restored interiors. But unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to visit it properly, so we skipped it this round.

Overall, our stop at Nagoya Castle was short — more of a visual appreciation from the outside rather than a deep dive inside — but it was still a nice way to start the day.

2. Lunch — Nagoya’s Signature Hitsumabushi

Hitsumabushi Bincho Kinshachi Yokocho Branch

For lunch, we wanted to try hitsumabushi, a classic Nagoya specialty. It’s a dish of grilled eel (unagi) served over rice in a wooden container, with the eel grilled over charcoal and coated repeatedly with a rich, savoury glaze. This gives it a slightly smoky, crisp exterior while keeping the inside soft and tender — a perfect combination of flavour and texture.

Hitsumabushi is traditionally enjoyed in three stages:

Eat the eel on its own.
Add condiments like spring onions, wasabi, and nori.
Pour broth or tea over the eel and rice to make a warm, comforting ochazuke.

When we arrived, the queue was super long, and knowing how popular this dish is in Nagoya, we didn’t want to spend too much time waiting. So we decided to get it as takeaway instead — and honestly, the takeaway boxes were so pretty. Even packed to go, the presentation felt thoughtful, neat, and very Japanese.

Whether you follow all three steps properly or simply enjoy it however you like, hitsumabushi is hearty, flavourful, and deeply satisfying — exactly what we needed after walking around the castle grounds.

3. 71st Nagoya Matsuri — A Small Peek at the Celebration

We already knew the 71st Nagoya Matsuri was happening that weekend (18–19 October 2025).

Before going, I found surprisingly little information online about where exactly to stand or what time the different segments would appear, so we didn’t plan our day around it. Ideally, I would have loved to catch the full parade, but we were short on time. In the end, we simply stood by the roadside and watched a small part of it pass by — a brief but memorable glimpse of the city’s festive energy.

Despite our short viewing, the festival itself is known as Nagoya’s biggest annual autumn celebration. Some key features include:

The Hometown Heroes Parade, with Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu marching with an entourage of armored warriors
Parade floats designated as municipal cultural properties, showcasing traditional craftsmanship and history
Music, sacred dances, and traditional performances across Hisaya‑Odori Park, Oasis 21, and the areas surrounding Nagoya Castle
Free entry to certain attractions, including Nagoya Castle, on festival days

Even though we only caught a small slice of the action, it added a lively, unexpected highlight to our day in Nagoya.

Thoughts on Day 3

Day 3 was simple but enjoyable — a nice balance between sightseeing, good food, and a little bit of cultural festivity. Nagoya Castle gave us a calm morning walk, the grilled eel lunch was a highlight on its own, and catching even a small slice of the matsuri made the city feel extra alive. It was the kind of day that didn’t need a rigid plan to feel worthwhile.

A Day Inside Ghibli Park: My Whimsical Escape in Nagoya

We reached Ghibli Park at 9:00 AM, right when the gates opened, and went straight to the Valley of Witches. The queue was already long, and for a moment, I genuinely thought we wouldn’t get a slot for Howl’s Moving Castle.

But somehow, we managed to get a 1:30 PM slot — which felt like winning a tiny lottery. With time to spare before our entry, we explored the surrounding areas inside the Valley of Witches.

Valley of the Witches — Beautiful, Magical, and a Little Mixed

This zone brings together worlds from Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and other witch‑themed Ghibli classics. If your ticket includes this area, it’s one of the most immersive parts of the park.

The Bakery from Kiki’s Delivery Service

One of the most impressive recreations in the entire park. It is an exact replica from the anime — both the inviting front shop and the familiar backyard area where Kiki often appears. The best part is that you can actually buy real bread here, which makes the experience feel wonderfully authentic.

Okino House

A warm, lived‑in family home that feels as if Kiki just stepped out for a moment. Filled with small domestic details, it’s surprisingly charming and very easy to linger in.

Howl’s Moving Castle

After reading so many rave reviews and then being blown away by Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse, my expectations for Howl’s Castle were understandably high. While the interior is nicely crafted and enjoyable to walk through, it felt more like a short walkthrough than a fully immersive space. Still worth experiencing, but best approached with balanced expectations.

Mononoke Village — Featuring Lord Okkoto

After exploring the Valley of the Witches, we continued to Mononoke Village, a zone themed after Princess Mononoke. The main feature here is the large, imposing figure of Lord Okkoto, set within a forest‑inspired environment.

There aren’t many attractions in this area.

And yes — we still got the grilled mochi here, which made a nice snack break.

Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse — The Heart of Ghibli Park

Our timed entry for Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse was at 2:00 PM, and when we arrived at around 1:30 PM, there was already a queue forming. This is the part of the park where the magic truly comes alive.

Inside, it’s part museum, part film set, part art installation:

cinematic displays
immersive rooms
nostalgic photo spots
a cosy theatre
whimsical sets

If you enjoy taking photos or exploring slowly, this area alone can take hours.

We skipped a few of the longer photo queues because we wanted to cover more ground, and we didn’t regret it. We originally thought we would finish the entire park in about three hours, but we only left around 5 PM. Time passes differently in here.

Practical Tips

Here are a few things I wish someone had told me before my visit:

1. Tickets must be booked ahead
Slots sell out quickly, and walk‑ins are not allowed. Secure your tickets early. When i purchased, the desired dates are not available, fortunately for us we are in Nagoya for 3 days 2 nights so we can adjust our itinerary accordingly. We got the Ghibli Park Standard Pass and still manage to enjoy ourselves. Do note that opening times for weekends and weekdays differs.

2. Don’t overpack
The park is a mix of indoor and outdoor areas, and you will be walking a lot. Travel light.

3. Plan your Valley of Witches visit
If you want to enter Howl’s Moving Castle, arrive early and be prepared for queues. Set realistic expectations and enjoy the details.

4. Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse deserves the most time
If you need to prioritise one zone, make it this one.

Final Thoughts

Ghibli Park isn’t about thrill rides or big spectacles. It’s about slowing down, appreciating small details, and feeling immersed in the worlds created by Studio Ghibli. Our day didn’t go exactly as planned, but it unfolded in the best way possible — securing a Howl’s Castle slot despite the crowds, discovering unexpected favourites like Okino House, and getting completely absorbed in Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse.

Even though Howl’s Castle didn’t fully meet my high expectations, the overall experience was still magical in a gentle, calming way. If you love the quiet storytelling and atmosphere of Studio Ghibli, this park is absolutely worth visiting.

At nagoya, I tried two very different food spots — a lively izakaya experience at Sekai no Yamachan and a quieter, more comforting stop at Tsubame Milk & Bread.
Both couldn’t be more different, but each had its own charm.

This meal turned out to be one of the highlights of the day — beautifully prepared meats, thoughtful sauces, and unique small dishes that made the entire dinner memorable.
We are fortunate that we are ushered to a seat immediately despite making no reservations made in advance.

The onigiri came filled with stewed Hida beef.
The flavour was nice, but compared to the rest of the dinner, this was a simpler dish — pleasant but not particularly memorable.
