O Holy Night
2. Away in a Manger
3. Ding Dong Merrily on High
4. White Christmas
5. Silent Night
6. Christmas Pipes
7. Christmas Song
8. Carol of the Bells
9. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
10. Panis Angelicus
11. Don Oíche Úd I mBeithil (That Night in Bethlehem)
12. O Come All Ye Faithful
13. Little Drummer Boy
14. Wexford Carol
15. Let It Snow!

"One of the more impressive things about A Christmas Celebration
is its glowing immediacy. The record's rich vocals and colorful
instrumentals create a concert-like setting, reprising the season's
most loved hymns, carols, and pop standards, along with a Gaelic
version of "That Night in Bethlehem." Unexpected numbers such
as "Christmas Pipes" and "Carol of the Bells" (here led by the
spirited fiddling of Mariread Nesbitt) only enhance an already
engaging disc that finely weaves between the piety of classical
music and the playfulness of pop. Chloe Agnew, Orla Fallon,
Lisa Kelly, and Meav Ni Mhaolchatha combine their Celtic voices
against orchestral arrangements and sparser settings--spiked
with the traditional Irish fare of uilleann pipes, harp, and ancient
choral harmony--to deliver an assortment of reverent but lively
arrangements that wouldn't be out of place at a church, concert
hall, or good Irish celli."
--- Amazon.com Editorial Reviews by Martin Keller

Listen to Samples
To hear a song sample, click the following banner, scroll down to
"Listen to Samples", then click on "Listen" by that sample:

Christmas From The Heart by David Archuleta

Released on October 13, 2009, "Christmas From The Heart"
is the second studio album, and first Christmas album by
David Archuleta. The album features collaboration with
Charice Pempengco (an international Philippines singer who
rose to popularity through YouTube) on:
" Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"
and a brand new track "Melodies of Christmas", co-written
by David.

Track Listing of "Christmas From The Heart":

1. The only tools you really need, however, are a
simple and inexpensive gram scale, dry and liquid measuring
cups, and idea on reading food labels.

Among all of the mentioned tools, reading food labels seem to
be the most effective way of determining the right kind of food
to be bought in the supermarket. It lets you make sensible food
selections. Through the “Nutrition Facts” section in a particular
item in the grocery, you can identify the amount of serving sizes
provided in that product.

With food labels, you can clearly understand the amount and
kinds of nutrients that are provided in the item. Usually, it
contains the information on saturated fat, sodium, total fat, fiber,
and cholesterol amount “per serving.”

However, understanding and reading these food labels can be
very perplexing. A typical consumer would definitely ask what
those numbers mean and how it will affect her diet intake if ever
she will religiously follow the serving guide as stipulated on the
food label.

To further have a clear and more comprehensive understanding
of the items stated in the food label, here is a list of things that
you need to know:

1. Serving size

This is the primary item you will see in a food label.

The amount of servings stated in the food label refers to the quantity
of food people usually consume. However, this does not necessarily
mean that it reflects your very own amount of food intake.

Moreover, serving size determines the amount of nutrients that
enters the body. This means that if you will follow strictly what
the serving size is, you will obtain the same amount of nutrients
according to the serving size that was given in the label.

For instance, if the serving size says one serving size is equal to
54 grams, that would mean you have to measure 54 grams and
eat that and you have just eaten one serving. So to speak, the
amount of nutrients stated in the food label is the same amount
that has entered your body considering the fact that you have
just eaten 54 grams.

However, if you have eaten everything, and the food label says
that each pack is equivalent to 4 servings, you have to calculate
the amount of nutrients that have entered your body.
This means that if the food label says 250 calories per serving
that means you have to multiply it to four to get the total
amount of calories you have taken.

2. Nutrients

This refers to the list of available nutrients in a particular item.
It is also where the nutritional claims of the product based on
the recommended daily dietary allowance are stated. Usually,
the nutritional amounts are based on both the 2,500-calorie
diets and the 2,000 recommended dietary allowances.

In order to understand the numeric value of each item, you
should know that the “% daily value” that the food label indicates
is actually based on how a particular food corresponds to the
recommended daily dietary allowance for a 2,000 calorie.

If in the event that you have purchased an item that has a
dietary allowance different from the 2,000-calorie diet, you just
have to divide the stipulated amount by 2,000 and you will be
able to identify the “%daily value” for the nutrients.

3. Ingredients

This refers to the list of the ingredients that were used to
manufacture the product. The listing is usually arranged from
the main ingredients that have the greater amount by weight
up to the smallest quantity. This simply means that the actual
quantity of the food includes the biggest quantity of the main
ingredient or the first item and the minimum amount of the
very last ingredient.

4. Label claim

This refers to the kinds of nutritional claims of a particular food
item. For instance, if an item says it is sodium-free, it has less
than 5 milligrams per serving or a low fat item actually contains
3 grams of fat or less.

Indeed, reading food labels can be very tedious and confusing.
Nevertheless, once you get the hang of it, it would be easier for
you to watch your diet because you can already control the
amount of food that you take.

Visit this website site to learn more about:
- Low Carb Diets
- Low Calorie Diets, and
- Low Fat Diets

Tags: food+labels diets nutrition

"Heaven Knows" by Rick Price

"Heaven Knows" is a sad, heart-breaking love song by Rick Price, a famous Australian Singer cum songwriter.

I was introduced to the song back in 1993 by an Aussie friend while enjoying my holidays in Gold Coast, Queensland. From her previous eating
plan, she switched to a higher protein diet. She consumed high
protein meals in smaller portions, and she combined this diet
with an exercise program that includes weight training and
cardiovascular workouts. After getting a lot of flak because of her
post-pregnancy figure, Kate removed all that baby weight in only
four months and has gained abdominal muscles that gained the
envy of many in Hollywood.

3. Oprah Winfrey
As one of the most successful talk-show hosts in the world, there
is no question that Oprah needs to maintain her physical appearance
for her millions of audiences. Known as one of those celebrities who
are constantly battling weight gain, she has recently toned up her
figure and has never looked figure in age 50 by combining a regular
exercise regime and diet plan. Oprah works out five days a week,
spending 30 minutes on the threadmill and doing free weights.
Her eating plan consists of legumes, fish, nuts, fruits and vegetables,
chicken and dairy products that are lowfat. She limits her
consumption of white sugar and flour. Oprah also credits her trim
figure to her habit of not eating anything after seven in the evening.

4. Gwyneth Paltrow
A lot of people may find it hard to believe that the perpetually slim
Academy award-winning actress actually needs to diet. Gwyneth
actually follows a healthy eating plan that resembles Oprah's,
avoiding sugar and white flour. She usually follows a macrobiotic
diet, eating foods like vegetables, brown rice, and lean meat.
She also eliminated dairy from her diet, and does yoga everyday.

5. Madonna
The pop star known as the Material Girl has always flaunted a
body that is to die for, and has become a true fitness paragon over
the years. She keeps herself in tip-top shape by having Ashtanga
Yoga, and follows a strict diet that mostly shuns junk foods.
She adopted a macrobiotic eating plan that includes organic foods
rich in lean protein.

6. Claudia Schiffer
The bodacious German supermodel eats salad and steamed
vegetables for dinner and eats only fruits before the afternoon.
While on locations, she prefers to eat black grapes and drinks
tomato juice and herbal tea.

7. Christie Brinkley
Long-time supermodel maintains her all-American good looks
by being a vegetarian. She does not keep junk foods of any kind
inside her home to make sure that she does not eat them when
cravings occur. She snacks on sweet potatoes in place of candy
bars, and she adopts a liquid juice diet when she needs to slim
down fast.

Celebrities are just like ordinary people. They need to maintain
their figures just like anyone else, and there is more pressure on
their part since they are constantly in the public eye. Ordinary
folks can have celebrity-like bodies, too, and by following these
diet and fitness plans, they can also look like red-carpet worthy.

Tags: health fitness healthy+diets Celebrities

Guitar Tips Part 6 - Seven Steps for Positive Work Habits for Practice

Learning an instrument can be hard work. It is important to
make sure you have solid self discipline and apply yourself.
Because a lot of your practice will be away from your teacher
you need to develop strategies for maintaining a good work
ethic. Here are seven habits that will help you in your journey
learning your instrument.

1. Don’t procrastinate. There are always a set number of tasks
you have to do when you are practicing. It is easy to put off
playing until tomorrow, but you shouldn’t do this. Practice is
important; you should get into it as soon as possible.

2. Keep in touch with other musicians. If you are constantly in
contact with your friends who also play then you will bounce off
and motivate each other.

3. Keep moving. Don’t get stuck in a rut, it is important to keep on
leaning new skills and developing your playing.

4. Use your time properly. If you lack a regular practice time then
becomes difficult to maintain consistency. You should make a
constant time to practice so you can fully develop as a musician.

5. Practice in a good work environment. It is important to have a
good place for you to practice. You need an environment that is
clean and quite so you can fully concentrate on what you are doing.

6. Be comprehensive. You should always be trying to become a
complete musician. For this reason, it can be a good idea to keep a
list of all the things you need to do to become a complete musician.

7. Know your own work habits. Each person has their own individual
way of learning. For this reason it is important to adjust your practice
so that you can maintain it.

Hope these tips can help you with your practice. Keeping your self
discipline is a matter of good planning and goal setting.

In affiliation with Ben Edwards Of Jamorama

Tags: learn+to+play+guitar guitar+tips

Guitar Tips Part 5 - Discipline in Practicing

Discipline when you are practicing the guitar is very important.
Learning to play the guitar is one of the most rewarding things
I have ever done in my life but it was also one of the hardest.
The reason that I became proficient with my instrument is simple.
I practiced, and I practiced a lot; every day in my bedroom from
the age of 16. I spent most of my time practicing the fundamentals
--running up and down scales, changing chords and trying to
improve my repertoire of songs.

Sometimes it was easy to make time to practice because I was in
a good mood and I really wanted to play. At those times I could
spend hours just listening to how cool it sounded when I changed
from the chord D to the chord G. But on other days it was my
discipline and desire to play and improve that made me practice
and develop as a player.

There are two main factors when it comes to discipline in practice:
practicing regularly and practicing well. Both of these are important
to address.

Practicing regularly is the most obvious and easy to do. Basically
you should play the guitar every day. These don’t need to be
mammoth, three hour long sessions. 30 minutes will generally be
fine if you are focused during that time. Doing regular, small
amounts of practice is far better than going all out for hours once
a week. I know that in a busy life it can be hard to make the time
to practice but honestly 30 minutes a day is achievable for anyone.
There is no set time that is best to practice but I prefer to do it in
the evening simply because I find playing the guitar is a relaxing
way to wind down after a stressful day.

Practicing badly is a more common and difficult to address problem.
This is something that affects even the most experienced player.
This problem has several causes and solutions.

* Playing the same thing over and over every time you play.
I am a firm believer that you should play something perfectly
before you move on. BUT, once you know how to play something
you need to move on and keep challenging yourself.

* The opposite is also a problem: moving on too quickly.
You should practice so that you play a piece well before you go on
to the next thing. Playing perfectly and accurately is an excellent
habit for any musicians to have.

* Not focusing on developing all parts of your musicianship when
you are practicing. I like to split my playing into parts. For example
I might spend 5 minutes practicing new scales or chords, 10 minutes
working on writing new music for myself and maybe 15 minutes
learning a new song or part of a song.

* Playing things too fast when you first try and learn them.
This can cause you to become disillusioned with your playing when
you are trying to learn a new song. Most guitarists, including myself
try playing a song at a slow speed before trying it a fast pace.

Practicing properly and regularly is the best way to become good at
anything including playing the guitar. This requires discipline.
Not only discipline to practice regularly, but also discipline to stay
focused and on track when you are practicing. If you stay
disciplined with your playing you will develop in to an excellent
player.

Part 6 to follow...

In affiliation with Ben Edwards Of Jamorama

Tags: learn+to+play+guitar guitar+tips

Guitar Tips Part 4 - Buying an Electric Guitar Amp

I am always arguing with my peers over the relative importance
of a good guitar as opposed to a good Amp. It simply comes down
to money. Not every one can buy the exact gear that they want
so often it is a trade off. I am a believer in spending a bit more
time and money on getting a good amp but many players I know
and respect think the opposite. On that note I think it is best to try
out as many different amp and guitar combination within your
price range as you can.

Remember a bad amp can make a good guitar sound bad and a
good amp can make a bad guitar sound good. For this reason it
is important not to neglect you amp when you are shopping around.
For this reason I decided to write you a basic introduction to amps
so you could at least know the basics before you started shopping
around.

There are basically four different types of guitar amplifiers: tube,
analog (solid state), digital and hybrids. This article will give brief
description of the different types of amps out there.

Tube Amplifiers

The first amps ever made were tube amps and many players still
prefer them over analogue or digital amps. The reason for this is
that tube amps have a fat warm tone that many guitarists find
natural. Also tube amps are generally loader than analogue or
digital amps with the same wattage. There aren’t many among
us who don’t like having more power on stage. Most tube amps
have separate channels for distortion and clean sounds. The
distortion in tube amps is generally made by overdriving the
preamp. There are two major draw backs with tube amps: one is
that tubes are made of glass and can be broken easily if you don’t
treat your amp properly, also tubes wear out and need to be replaced.

Solid State (analogue) amplifiers

The reason that these types of amps are called ‘solid state’ is because
they use transistors in their pre and power amps instead of tubes.
The main problem with solid state is that they can often sound brittle
and harsh. This is particularly the case with their distortion channels.
The quality of the distortion on solid state amps can vary wildly and
it is something you should defiantly check when you are looking at a
solid state amp.

Solid state amps are very reliable, inexpensive and they don’t have
any pesky tubes to replace and for these reasons they remain
popular with some guitarists.

Digital (Modeling) amplifiers

Modeling amps use digital processors so that the amp can mimic
many other amp sounds. They can copy sounds from old or new
style tube amps using onboard software. These types of amps are
quite popular at this time and will only become more popular as
they improve in quality and become cheaper. Some of these amps
are better in quality than others, for those at the top of the range
most guitarists will not be able to hear the difference between
them and the real thing.

Hybrid amplifiers

Some guitar manufactures have come out with amps that combine
a tube preamp and a solid state power amp. The most well known
of these is the Marshall Valvestate series of amps. These amps are
a cheap way of getting a tube sound if you are on a budget.

Buying an Amp

The best way to buy an amp is to shop around. Take your electric
guitar (if you have one) into a few stores and try out a few different
amps. Try amps from different price ranges to see if you can hear
any difference. Also I recommend you take a more experienced
guitarist with you. Listen to their advice and try out as many amps
as you can. Try playing the amp at different volumes to see if
responds well. Check all the different channels to make sure it
sounds cool clean and distorted. Take your time buying an amp.
If you choose wisely and you can get a piece of equipment that
will make you sound better and should last you a long time.

Stay tuned for Part 5.

In affiliation with Ben Edwards Of Jamorama

Tags: learn+to+play+guitar guitar+tips

Guitar Tips Part 3 - Hints for Buying a New Guitar

Whether you’re buying your first guitar, upgrading or simply
adding to your collection, your first priority is to do your
homework. There are many different resources available and
you should endeavor to use them all. Guitar magazines are a
good place to find out prices and specifications on different
models of guitar. You can get similar knowledge from browsing
at your local instrument shop. Another great tool is the internet
– you can check for the most competitive prices, get some
information on the manufacturers and search for other guitarist’s
reviews and opinions.

You really need to arm yourself well before you try haggling with
your local guitar salesman.

Often you can find online auctions where guitars sell for incredibly
low prices; however, I wouldn’t advise you to take this option.
As a rule you should always play before you buy so that you get a
chance to gauge performance.

Once you’ve got the background knowledge that you need on the
guitar of your choice the next task is to set yourself a budget and
stick to it. Don’t let salespeople talk you into spending more money
than you anticipated.

Testing out new guitars in the shop can be an intimidating task for
beginners. It is important to remember that you are not there to
showcase your playing ability – you are there to discern whether
your proposed buy is a good deal or not. Check the frets for buzzing
by playing each one. Make sure that the neck is not warped by
looking down it as if you were sighting a gun. Check that all of the
volume and tone switches etc. are in good working condition.

It is a great idea to take an experienced guitarist along with you
when you are looking at a possible purchase, so see if you can
persuade a teacher of friend. Not only will they be able to offer
helpful advice – they will be good moral support when it’s time
to pick up the guitar and test it out in public.

Part 4 to follow.

In affiliation with Ben Edwards Of Jamorama

Tags: learn+to+play+guitar guitar+tips

Guitar Tips Part 2 - Guitar Tuning

Learning how to tune your guitar is an important skill to learn
if you want to become a guitar player. Having a guitar that is
in tune will make a massive difference to how good your playing
sounds. There are quite a few methods for tuning your guitar,
some that you will use more than others. Still, it is good to know
how to use all the methods that are available.

The most common way of tuning a guitar, is to itself. To do this
you tune all your strings from the bottom (thickest) string up to
the top string (thinnest). To do this you press down on the fifth
fret and try and tune the A string (second thickest) so that is
sound perfectly in tune with the bottom string with the fifth fret
pushed down.

Repeat this process to all the strings except for the B string (second
thinnest) which you press down on the forth fret on the G string
(third thinnest) to tune.

The electronic tuner is probably the easiest and most effective way
of tuning your guitar to correct pitch. With an electronic tuner you
can get a very accurate tuning because it actually measures the
sound wave frequency of your strings. Take your tuner and pluck
each string individually until each string is perfectly in tune.
Remember a guitar is tuned from top to bottom eBGDAE.

You can try tuning your guitar to another guitar. For this method
take the guitar that is in tune and try and tune each string on you
guitar so that you can hear that each string vibrates in tune with
the other.

Regardless of whether you set out to learn a few simple chords,
or if you just want to be the next biggest thing to grace the music
world. When you pick up an instrument you are going to have to
practice if you are to have any hope of getting better.

Try all these methods to tune your guitar to see which one works
best for you.

Tuning a 12 String

Even though it may look like a big challenge, ‘standard’ tuning a
12-string guitar is actually quite easy. For the bottom four strings
(four thickest) you will tune each pair of strings to the same note
but the thinner one will be tuned an octave higher. An octave is
two notes that are the same but at a different pitch. The top two
strings (two thinnest) have both strings tuned to the same not at
the same pitch so they sound exactly the same.

Sounds simple? In theory it is, however when strings are tuned in
octaves it is easy to hear slight mistunings. For this reason it is
important to tune your strings perfectly when you are tuning a
12-string. Also sometimes you may have a problem keeping some
of the strings in tune as the some of the smaller strings are tuned
quite tightly. For this reason I think it can be a good idea to get
the best quality strings you can when stringing up a 12-string.
Ask your local dealer about strings, hopefully they can help you
out.

Part 3 to follow.

In affiliation with Ben Edwards Of Jamorama

Tags: learn+to+play+guitar guitar+tips

Guitar Tips Part 1 - Parts of the Guitar

Often people learning to play the guitar have trouble with the
names of the various parts of the guitar. Here is a brief description
of some of the more commonly misunderstood parts of the guitar.

Headstock - The head stock is the part of a guitar at the end of
the neck opposite to the body. The headstock is generally used
for supporting the tuning pegs used to wind the strings. There
are many shapes that headstocks can come in depending on the
type of guitar.

Machine Heads - The machine heads or tuning pegs are found at
the headstock. The machine heads tighten or loosen strings so they
string can be tuned. A basic gear mechanism is used to winds the
strings.

Frets - The bars or ridges (usually made of metal) that sit on the
fingerboard or neck of a guitar; when the string is depressed by
your fingers at the metal bar it will make a note of the desired pitch.
Frets are arranged on guitars to produce specific musical pitches.
On the typical guitar or bass each fret represents one semitone or
half step.

Bridge - The bridge is found down on the body. The function of the
bridge, in addition to simply holding the strings in place, is to
transmit their vibrations to the top of the guitar, to the instrument's
soundboard or pickups. There are many different types of bridge and
they can be made from a variety of materials depending upon the
type of guitar. For example electric guitars usually have metal bridges
and acoustic guitars usually have wooden ones.

Stay tuned for Part 2.

In affiliation with Ben Edwards Of Jamorama

Tags: learn+to+play+guitar guitar+tips

Remember Lucia Popp

Slovak-born Austrian soprano, Lucia Popp began her career as
a soubrette soprano, and later moved into the light-lyric and
lyric coloratura soprano repertoire and then the lighter
Richard Strauss and Wagner operas. There also seems to be
a frustration in the lack of quality information on the market.

I'd highly recommend you to review what my friend Ben Edwards
can offer you...

Ben Edwards is a highly respected guitar teacher. he's the former
lead guitarist for the popular down-under band "DegreesK", whom
he toured with internationally.

Before joining the band Ben gained a Bachelor of Education. His
passion for teaching others, especially guitar, sparked him to
develop Jamorama - The Ultimate Guitar Learning Kit...

Ben Edwards and the team at Jamorama have bucked the trend
with the latest version of Jamorama. They had considerable success
with their first release of Jamorama, and given the positive feedback
from the success of this package, the team decided to develop the
product further. They have come up with a new package that is
unrivaled in terms of quality and its comprehensive nature.
This package truly does enable guitar students to accelerate their
learning, and includes an impressive array of features.

In addition to the quality information in the glossy two book series,
the team at Jamorama has spent 1,000s of hours developing 148
video examples and exercises so the student can hear and see exactly
what they should be doing. The Jamorama team have also included
two exclusive educational computer games to develop your skills in
reading and training your ear to transcribe music. They also included
the pro version of Jayde Musica and GuitEarIt! as free bonuses that
give the student the ability to train their ear to recognize notes and
transcribe songs from the radio. Both of these programs are very
well made and presented, and most of all are easy and fun to play.

Add to this package the two additional free bonus ebooks "Advanced
Learning Techniques for Guitar”.and “How to tune your guitar”.
Advanced Techniques introduces the idea of mental visualization,
which is a powerful tool in speeding up your rate of learning.
Mental visualization uses the same pathways inside your brain
other than the fact you are not performing the activity physically.
The second bonus book, “How to tune your guitar” solves the
problem with tuning guitars, and introduces the reader to the most
effective way of tuning a guitar.

If that weren't already enough the Jamorama Metronone also
comes with the package at no additional cost.

With all of the information in this package there really is no excuse
to delay learning to play your guitar. The Jamorama team has
given the reader four high quality books, two fun educational games
and access the Jamorama forum with all the resources you need to
play like a professional in no time.

This package is by far the most complete and fresh approach to guitar
playing that I have seen in a long time. I highly recommend this
product because I do believe it will deliver results and have you playing
popular songs like a professional using the most effective techniques.
There is something here for every guitar player, regardless of ability.
And at the current cost, it really is worth every dollar spent!

Click here to find out more…and accelerate your guitar playing today!

Tags: Jamorama learn+guitar+online guitar+lessons Ben+Edwards

The Passionate Folk Trio - Peter, Paul & Mary

One of the most enduring acts in American music, Peter, Paul
And Mary both defined and transcended the 1960s folk revival.
The trio's passionate commitment to peace and social justice made
them the conscience of an era as they soulfully communicated
political concerns through music in an unprecedented way.
At the same time that they reached millions with their social
message, they achieved phenomenal mass popularity.

Listening to these powerful and earnest songs some 40 plus years
on is to marvel at the times they were created in. Modern Folk
music has its roots in socially progressive activism which then
evolved into the more psychedelic aspects of Bob Dylan. The magic
of Peter, Paul and Mary was in the presentation. They mixed sweet
harmonies into the messages and then took them to the pop charts.
As such, their importance to musical history simply can not be
understated.

Peppered among their hits my #1 choice has always been
"Puff, The Magic Dragon" - still manages to tug at my heartstrings
even though I first heard it roughly 42 years ago; this touching
song is truly very beautiful!

Their other songs are just as lovely...such as:
"Early In The Morning"
"Where Have All The Flowers Gone"
"Lemon Tree"
"Where Have All The Flowers Gone"
"Day Is Done"
"The Great Mandala (The Wheel Of Life)"
...etc.

Puff the Magic Dragon - Peter Paul & Mary

Tags: Peter,+Paul,+Mary folk+songs folk+singers

What A Wonderful World

I've been away for weeks...traveling... seeing places...enjoying
life...

Now, it's time to do some catch-ups...

The first thing I did was to change my blog to a new template,
one that's more user-friendly.

I also renamed my blog from "My Song Book" to "What A
Wonderful World", taking cue from the famous song by
Louis Armstrong.

I'm the optimistic type. The range covered is extraordinary - the sacred
and the secular, the massive spectaculars of the opera stage and
the darkly intensive world of the string quartet.

But there was a gradual development, one that reflected the times
in which the composers lived and worked. It is the purpose of this
History to give an overview, to draw the multifaceted threads
together and provide a background to our present musical
experience.

Medieval and Renaissance Periods
Western classical music, like drama, began in church with the
chanting of monks. Out of this plainchant grew choral polyphony
-many sounds - as the vocal line was embellished and developed.
As composers became interested in rhythm, contrast, harmony
and music with words not taken directly from the mass, new
vocal forms were introduced. This was the age of the motet,
the madrigal, the chanson and carols. Slowly too, instruments
began to be incorporated into musical performance and composers
began to write for ensembles. From dance came the idea of
musical contrast, and the seeds of all later music were sown.

Baroque and Classical Periods
The musical form above all others that came from the Baroque
period was opera, a form reflecting the time's love of theatrical
excess. Even religious music was written to be staged, hence the
development of the oratorio and the chorale, while the increasing
virtuosity of instrumentalists led to the formation of orchestras
and the development of the concerto grosso.

Taken up by composers of the classical period, the concerto grosso
became the symphony the contrast of a soloist against an ensemble
became the concerto, and, at the other end of the scale, the sonata
and the string quartet came into being.

The Romantic Period
Romantic composers believed that music was an expression of their
inner feelings and so they produced music that was wild,
tempestuous and often tried to tell a story. Tone-poems, programme
symphonies and large scale concertos became their hallmark.
Increasing nationalism was reflected not just in the use of folk tunes
in orchestral music but also in the subject matter of operas.

And if there was one instrument above all others that the Romantics
claimed as their own it was the piano. Many composers, like Liszt
and Chopin, were virtuoso performers who wrote their pieces to show
off their own talents.

The 20th Century
The 20th century is the most confusing of all musical periods.
It is a century in which the old empires crumbled, the world map
was redrawn by two world wars, and in which there are still
nationalist conflicts. It is also a century in which man has walked
on the moon. The immense political and scientific changes have
been reflected in art and in music as composers have sought to
find a new musical voice.

From the atonalism of Schoenberg to the rhythmic experiments
of Stravinsky, from the aural impressionism of Debussy to the
electronic world of Varese, composers have tried to examine
what music is and how it relates to life. Some of these
experiments have taken music away from popular taste,
others have proved to be a dead end; but all have contributed
in some measure to the mainstream so that classical music
now is as rich, vibrant and diverse as it has ever been.

Want more?
