Eating raisins and soy appears to help ward off high blood
pressure, a key risk factor in heart disease, according to two studies
presented at a major US cardiology conference on Sunday.
Munching on a
handful of raisins three times a day helped people with slightly
elevated blood pressure lower their numbers after several weeks, said
one of the studies presented at the American College of Cardiology
conference.
The randomized clinical trial — believed to be the first
formal measurement of raisins’ benefits on blood pressure — involved 46
people with a condition known as pre-hypertension.
That means their
blood pressure ranged from 120 over 80 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) to
139 millimeters of mercury over 89 mm Hg, or just higher than normal.
Compared
to people who snacked on cookies or crackers, the raisin-eating group
saw significant drops in blood pressure, in some cases lowering the top
number, or systolic pressure, by 10.2, or seven percent over the 12-week
study.
Researchers are not sure exactly why the raisins work so
well, but they think it may have to do with the high level of potassium
in the shriveled, dried grapes.
“Raisins are packed with potassium,
which is known to lower blood pressure,” said lead investigator Harold
Bays, medical director of Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis
Research Center.
They were also a good source of antioxidant dietary
fiber that may favorably alter the biochemistry of blood vessels,
causing them to be less stiff, which in turn, may reduce blood
pressure.”
A second study on soy showed that daily intake of foods
like tofu, peanuts and green tea helped reducing blood pressure in more
than 5,100 white and African American people aged 18-30.
Those who
consumed about 2.5 or more milligrams of isoflavones, a key component in
soy, per day had significantly lower systolic blood pressure than those
who ate less than 0.33 mg per day.
That daily level should not be
hard for most people to reach — a glass of soy milk contains about 22 mg
of isoflavones, or nearly 10 times the amount needed to see an effect,
according to the research.
“Our results strongly suggest a blood
pressure benefit for moderate amounts of dietary isoflavone intake in
young black and white adults,” said Safiya Richardson, a student at
Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and the study’s
lead investigator.
Eating soy could be a way for people with
slightly elevated blood pressure to avoid progressing to high blood
pressure, and potentially ward off the need to take medications, she
added.
Soy and the isoflavones it contains work by boosting enzymes
that create nitric oxide, which in turns helps to widen blood vessels
and reduce blood pressure.
“Based on our results and those of
previous studies, we would encourage the average adult to consider
including moderate amounts of soy products in a healthy, well-balanced
diet to reduce the chances of developing high blood pressure,”
Richardson said.

Saudi Arabia to end sponsorship system?

The Saudi Ministry of Labour are set to draft a new law which could
suspend the sponsorship system. Council members are to mull over the law
draft in the next few months for final approval.

The report
claims that the Council of Ministers will be discussing various points
and issues accompanying the law in upcoming proceedings. If the law is
suspended, it could benefit foreign workers.

If the law changes,
tension between sponsors and expatriate employees will hopefully
decrease. Employers will no longer be legally allowed to hold the
passports of their employees. Nor will sponsors have control over
whether the expatriate worker can bring their families to the kingdom to
stay or visit.

Mandatory insurance policy is also proposed in
the draft, guaranteeing financial rights to both employers and
employees, covering financial entitlements for over a span of a minimum
of six months.

Saudi officials have come under major pressure
recently over the country's employment laws, which are negatively
affecting the foreign workforce in the kingdom. They also pose some
human rights violations according to international law.

Is Dark Choclate Risk OR Benefit for your Health?

Chocolate lovers have been around a
long time. 16th Century Aztec Emperor Montezuma reportedly claimed
cocoa-rich chocolate was a divine drink of the gods, able to build up
resistance and fight fatigue. Chocolate's healthful effects are
attributable to compounds contained in the cacao beans. Before you
satisfy your chocolate craving, consider which variety is most
beneficial to your health.

Natural Cocoa

Most
commercial chocolates are highly processed foods, combining natural
cacao and various amounts of sugar, milk, fat and other ingredients.
Although cacao content in a product is listed as the percentage derived
from the bean, it may include three components: chocolate liquor, cocoa
butter and cocoa powder. For example, Ghirardelli's 60% Dark Chocolate
Squares refers to a product containing 60 percent chocolate liquor and
cocoa butter and 40 percent sugar, vanilla and other ingredients. The
percentage of cacao also represents the product's taste and color. The
higher the percentage, the more bitter the flavor and darker the color.

Heart Health

Chocolate
contains more antioxidants than fruits and vegetables. Flavanols are
the primary antioxidant found in chocolate and cocoa powder. Dark
chocolate has a higher flavanol concentration than milk or white
chocolate. Flavanols help decrease "bad" cholesterol concentrations in
the bloodstream. Researchers at the University Hospital in Zurich,
Switzerland, reported that dark chocolate reduces plaque formation in
arteries. In the November 2007 issue of "Circulation," Dr. Andreas
Flammer and colleagues found consumption of 1 oz. of 70 percent cacao
dark chocolate decreased plaque formation better than chocolate without
flavanols.

Blood Pressure

Dark
chocolate also reduces blood pressure, according to Dr. Karin Ried and
colleagues at the University of Adelaide, Australia. The researchers
analyzed studies, conducted between 1955 and 2009, that investigated the
effects of 50 to 70 percent cacao on blood pressure. Ried stated in the
2010 June issue of "BMC Medicine" that dark chocolate is superior to
white and cocoa-free chocolate in reducing hypertension.

Insulin Resistance

Insulin
resistance improves with occasional consumption of dark chocolate,
according to Dr. Davide Grassi from the University of L'Aquila, Italy.
Grassi and American colleagues at Tufts University in Boston looked at
the effects of consuming 3.5 oz. of chocolate daily for two weeks in
persons with impaired glucose tolerance. The researchers theorized in
the September 2008 issue of "Journal of Nutrition" that flavanol-rich
dark chocolate enhances nitric oxide release. Nitric oxide promotes
insulin release from the pancreas and helps normalize blood sugar
levels. More research is needed, however, before daily chocolate
consumption can be recommended for persons already diagnosed with
diabetes.

Considerations

Knowing
the cacao content in a chocolate treat is important when choosing
healthier options. But careful inspection of food labels should also
include looking at fat and sugar content. Chewy caramel and nuts add
calories that may lead to weight gain. Until further research reveals
the best portion size for health benefits, enjoy your dark chocolate in
1-oz. servings a few times a week.

.

US engineering expertise merges with Basque manufacturing techniques in the launch of the Hiroko
(Basque for “urban”), a small car that gets even smaller. Less than 100
inches long and electric-battery powered, it’s been called the CityCar
by its creators at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Up
to two people can enter and exit the car by lifting up the glass
windshield — essentially the whole front of the car — and the driver
steers with a joystick. The wheels turn a full 360 degrees, so no
parking space is out of reach, and the electric-powered vehicle can be
folded (with the back of the car slipping under the front), so three can
fit in the space of one full-sized car. The first uses of the Hiroko
will be for car sharing programmes in cities around the world. The cars
are also linked by a central network, so drivers can find out if one is
close to their location.
Production of 20 cars and a pilot
programm will begin next year in Spain’s Basque country near Bilbao,
and the first cars are set to roll down the road in spring of 2013.
Barcelona, Berlin and Malmo, Sweden, have already stated their interest
and MIT is looking at deploying the cars in Hong Kong and San Francisco.
Switzerland's Shawish Jewelry has created the world's first diamond ring.

Not
impressed? Well, consider that the entire ring is carved from a
diamond, whereas most other diamond rings are composed of a
precious-metal band with a diamond centerpiece.

Styleite
writes that the 150-carat ring runs laps around some other famous
diamond competitors, including Beyoncé's 18-carat engagement ring from
Jay-Z and the even better known 30-carat ring given to the late
Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Burton.

The ring was created by Shawish's president and CEO Mohamed Shawesh using lasers (yes, lasers!) along with traditional diamond cutting and polishing techniques.

It took a full year to carve the ring, which has been copyrighted and is expected to sell for $70 million.

As you might have guessed, one of the goals is to keep drivers less distracted by the likes of visual turn-by-turn GPS navigators and more focused on the road. While it's currently being tested with driving simulators, the results are positive so far, if a bit modest. When supplemented with typical audio / visual navigation, folks near the age of 25 kept their eyes planted on the asphalt for 3.1 percent moretime than without it. Notably, the improvement wasn't found with those over 65 in the aforementioned instance, however, supplemented with just the audio, the vibrating wheel had them focusing on the road by an increase of four percent.

Best of all, the tech is capable of sending more than just navigation cues -- it could certainly be useful in a Telsa. So when can you expect to find a force-feedback steering wheel in your ride? Technology Review cites Kevin Li, an AT&T Labs researcher on the project, who says the main hurdle is making something that people will just "get," and that it's still "years" away from becoming a possibility. While there's no photos of the setup just yet, a full report on the research will get released in June. CHICAGO — Patients with advanced heart
disease who received an experimental stem cell therapy showed slightly improved
heart function, researchers said at a major US cardiology conference on
Saturday. The clinical trial involved 92 patients, with an average age of 63, who
were picked at random to get either a placebo or a series of injections of
their own stem cells, taken from their bone marrow, into damaged areas of their
hearts. The patients all had chronic heart disease, along with either heart
failure or angina, and their left ventricles were pumping at less than 45
percent of capacity.

All the participants in the study were
ineligible for revascularization surgery, such as coronary bypass to restore
blood flow, because their heart disease was so advanced.

Those who received the stem cell therapy
saw a small but significant boost in the heart’s ability to pump blood,
measuring the increase from the heart’s main pumping

day is packed full of opportunities to maximise your weight loss
potential. The trick is to understand exactly when those opportunities
occur and what to do about them. So here's our guide to successful
slimming round the clock.

6 — 9 am

Can the caffeine
Kick
starting your day with a cup of tea, coffee or cola is not a great
idea. That's because these drinks contain caffeine which stimulates your
body to release a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol triggers the
release of another hormone, insulin and one of insulin's main roles
within the body is to encourage cells to store fat. So go for a herbal
tea, a hot water and lemon or a long glass of cold water instead.

Take a brisk walk
Researchers
have found that doing a short burst of cardio exercise before breakfast
may help you burn fat more efficiently. Doing this outside is even
better as natural light helps regulate your body clock, so you'll be
more energetic during the day and sleep better at night. During the
winter months, sunshine helps ward off SAD (seasonal affective
disorder), a condition that can lead to uncontrolled food cravings.
Sunlight on your skin also increases your levels of vitamin D, which are
associated with a higher metabolism and a lower risk of obesity.

Get serious about your cereals
Break
the fast that your body has experienced while sleeping with a breakfast
that will encourage your body to burn fat not store it. That means
avoiding all those over processed, high GI cereals out there that cause
insulin levels to rise and your fat storing ability to increase and go
for a far slower releasing, preferably wholegrain option instead.
Ideally, you'll add some protein too as this helps to increase satiety
(feelings of fullness) for longer and will help to slow the rate of
emptying from the stomach even further. Great options to go for
include:

• A bowl of porridge made with skimmed milk sprinkled with a few walnuts
•
A smoothie made with soya or skimmed milk, a little oat bran, ground
almonds (for added protein) and fresh, frozen or tinned (in natural
juices) fruit
• A slice of stone-ground, wholegrain bread topped with a couple of spoonfuls of beans
• A whole meal pita bread filled with peanut butter, a chopped banana and a drizzle of honey
• Two tablespoons of oats soaked overnight in some skimmed milk topped with a spoonful of mixed nuts and fresh berries.

10 am — 12 pm

Have a snack
Try
not to go for any longer than three hours between eating. Just a small
snack will do the trick helping the keep blood sugars elevated and
cravings at bay. Have an oatcake topped with ham and hummus, a low fat
yogurt mixed with fresh blueberries or a piece of fruit. Alternatively,
go for a handful of nuts. Researchers at Purdue University have found
that when people added peanuts to their daily diets, they ate less
considerably less during meal times.

12 - 2 pm

Sip on soup
According
to researchers at Penn State University eating a small bowl of soup
before lunch can save up to 700 calories a week. Subjects who ate soup
before their midday meal consumed 100 fewer calories and they didn't
make up for those calories by eating more later on. Just make sure you
avoid high fat, high calorie soups such as chowders and 'cream of'
varieties and go for a low calorie, low fat option such as a Thai broth,
vegetable, bean, minestrone or a homemade tomato soup.

2 — 4pm

Go green
If
now's the time you'd usually reach for that latte or hot chocolate
switch to a cup of green tea and an apple instead. According to
Scientists at Sydney University, apples are one of the most filling
snacks you can eat. This is because they have a high water content which
adds bulk helping your stomach to feel full. The green tea is a great
source of immune boosting antioxidants and drinking it instead of a
latte will save up to 7,000 calories (the equivalent of two pounds of
body fat) a month!

5 — 8 pm

Avoid the 'wine wind down'
If
you must have a glass of wine always have it after dinner but before
7pm. Drinking alcohol on an empty stomach increases appetite and can
result in over eating your main meal. Alcohol also inhibits the body's
ability to make a substance called glutamine, a natural stimulant whose
job it is to keep you awake which is why you may find a glass of wine
helps you to relax and unwind. However, when you stop drinking your body
responds by overproducing this stimulant. This can result in difficulty
getting to sleep. Alternatively, you may find yourself wide awake just a
couple of hours after drifting off. This disruption to sleep patterns
can disrupt the body's natural hunger hormones and lead to over eating
the next day. To avoid this happening refrain from drinking at least
four hours before going to bed.

Veg out
Overloading
on carbs such as bread, rice, jacket potatoes or pasta can cause
insulin levels to increase, which in turn inhibits fat burning and
promotes fat storage. Instead, make vegetables the base of your evening
meal and add some good quality protein in the form of lean red meat,
fish, chicken, beans, pulses or nuts. Switching the ratios of the food
you eat around in this way will also significantly decrease the calorie
content of your meal. Try a prawn, beef or chicken vegetable stir fry, a
salmon steak on a bed of sautéed red peppers and spring greens or a
medley of roasted vegetables served hot with a little feta cheese on
top.

9pm — 11pm

Find your bed!
A lack of good quality sleep can over-stimulate ghrelin
production which increases the desire to eat. This is probably why
researchers in Cleveland who studied 68,183 women for 16 years, found
that those who slept five or less hours per night were 32 percent more
likely to gain at least 30 pounds and 15 percent more likely to become
obese than women who slept for seven hours of more.

A Saudi Arabian researcher is exploring the possibility of developing
potato-powered batteries that could be commercially available as early
as next year.

Professor of Physics at King Abdulaziz University,
Suliman Abdalla, has developed an efficient potato cell, taking cues
from a research paper published by American and Israeli scientists in
2010.

The paper showed the benefits of using potato-powered batteries in the rural areas.

Abdalla
is currently developing a prototype that is more efficient than a 1.5 V
battery and could supply environment-friendly energy to millions of
people.

According to The Saudi Gazette, Abdalla experimented with

Learn from Failure!

"What separates winners from losers is the ability to
rise above defeats "
When you fail, you should really welcome it. Of course, that’s not an
easy thing to do, but that attitude does, as I said above, separate the
winners from the losers. The importance of some of our
failures after we have finally succeeded is looking back, we will be
able to see that we would never have been able to overcome some
situation if we had not have experienced previous failure. Remember! that
success will be all the sweeter when it comes. "I tried so hard I cannot get it" if we keep on failing in the same way we realize suddenly that we others can do it then why not me" very often, other people will have opinions about what you are attempting
to do and very often they will turn out to be negative opinions
especially if you are trying to accomplish anything challenging.
Perhaps, one of life’s greatest lessons is to learn to not take heed of
other people’s negativity.
In everyday life you will come across many Challenges, You cannot go on others choices you have to make your own right choice.

If There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,

If There are thousands to tell you will fail

If There are thousands to point out to you, one by one,
 But just combine what's within
 Remember!Never loose hope!
show the world you can do it that cannot be done
As you are the One and need none !
