Sunflower's new finding from hospital wasn't any thing significant to help and make her life easier and the result was still no clue about what cause of her struggle.

Intensive Language-base support is what she needs but there is such program exist?

I've been hearing this more than half of her life.

Apraxia? no one even mention about it anymore.

Her struggle of academic, inability of read, math difficulty are all related to communication difficulty. Since she is unable to catch up or on top of classmates her self-esteem has been attacked. Then question is what alliterative service she could receive, so that she can be successful and feel good about herself.

The program that district can offer is the Developmental Delay class setting, because the district is reluctant to give clear diagnose until they goes into 3rd grade unless the specialist diagnose for your child.

There is no such program where is only focus on communications. We are still looping round and round, could not find any way out, no solution where she could go and be successful.

It's like deja vu from last year.

I was told that she punched her classmate's stomach which was clear to supervisor who were watching during the recess but Sunflower insisted that she did not intend to do it, she did not even see the girl coming closer to her. They were playing TAG.

Few days later, I was told that she grabbed her friend's arm and squeezed.

Did you noticed anything?
Yes! she is trying to find her Girl friend. She wanted be with girls.

It has been peaceful because she gave up hang out with girls after she had horrible experience last year but what she really wanted is, she wanted girl friend soooooooooo bad.

She has been trying but it isn't working and I'm afraid that this may lead to another issue.

I also noticed her anxiety while ago. She washes her hand very often at school, not so much at home.
She avoids to touch sharing school supplies, such as pens.
She covers her fingers.

She is such a sweet little girl, I know she has so many things in her mind that I could not even pull that out to help.

Only things that I'm trying to avoid is not turn blame on her which isn't a same as spoiling.

She went through frustration through out a day. I don't think she needed me to tell her anything more.

she started to despise school, trying to find a way to avoid. She is just in 2nd grade.

If she doesn't feel comfortable with her learning style more things may add up.

She was finally given i sense(kind of digital hearing aids) which helps her to hear clearly, direct from her classroom teacher. She loves it and working positive way.

The school could have given to her much earlier this year if the IEP team carefully read the Audiologists recommendations. What a shame!

It's clear that she doesn't hear certain sounds or frequency that she hears biz biz biz what people say.

Isn't it frustrating to you? can you hear well if your eye glass was taken away from you?

This missing sounds is clearly causing her problem with READING.

http://www.actualites-medicales.com/une-anomalie-cerebrale-serait-a-lorigine-de-la-dyslexie/1306

This is a part of article from site abave, I think it is interesting.

A reduced sensibility of the left cortex

For many years the majority of scientists is assumed that dyslexia is caused by abnormal development of brain areas involved in the representation and processing of speech sounds (phonology). To study this, researchers from Inserm and CNRS showed brain activity in 44 adults, 23 with dyslexia, in response to a noise whose rate varied between 10 and 80 Hz Result: dyslexics showed a sensitivity reduced left auditory cortex to sounds modulated around 30 HzHowever, the response of the left cortex at these frequencies would be necessary to cut the word in language units can be attached to letters. This makes it difficult to quickly appoint a series of images.Anne-Lise Giraud, co-author of the study, explained to France Soir that dyslexics' sounds so finely cut that they can not associate them with the graphemes ".However, dyslexics show an increased sensibility to the amplitude modulations of sound beyond 40 Hz This would explain the lack of short-term memory. Indeed, continues the Anne-Lise Giraud neurobiologist in the newspaper, "If they cut more fine, they are more small packages and it clutters their short-term memory."

We tried out right after Xmas holiday.

As Sunflower's birthday was somewhere around new year(New Year baby) so we wanted to make sure if she really could skate before we purchase her shoes.

So she tried. She was bit clumsy at first and having trouble standing up but after she went through 2 loop on rink. She kind of started to skate without holding a bar.

Now she is trying to go backward and dance with music.

My husband and I also purchased skate shoes to keep up with her.

You just don't want to sit by rink and wait for her, believe me it's so boring.

I haven't been skating for more than 20 years but I have to admit that I actually enjoying it as well.

I loved Ski when I tried for a first time, so I'm not sure why this things came natural.

I'm certainly not from snow country..... He also has a soft spot for his two recent kid-friendly movies, The Adventures of Tintin (Dec. 23) and War Horse (Dec. 28).

In War Horse, a boy named Albert (newcomer Jeremy Irvine), a British farm boy nurtures a horse named Joey as a pet and workhorse until his father sells the horse to the British army. Soon, Albert enlists as well and hits the trenches in hopes of finding his trusted steed. The horse is a catalyst for the drama and everyone he meets sees parts of themselves reflected in Joey.Tintin is about a plucky young reporter, played by Jamie Bell (Billy Eliot), whose adventures from a Belgium cartoonist starting in 1929 became a worldwide phenomenon. The story for the new 3-D, CG animated feature comes from three Tintin books, particularly the Secrets of the Unicorn. The noted director said he had the time of his life making these two new movies, and that he loves to pursue stories in which an ordinary boy can do extraordinary things."I've always been drawn to the empowerment of young people. I think it's so powerful when a young person suddenly has to rise above the circumstance he finds himself in, take it into his own control, and achieve something kind of wonderful. And I think that's what happens with Tintin and War Horse.

"While he is known for his body of work, including E.T., Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Raiders of the Lost Ark, he is a devoted family man with six children. He said he was proud to share both of these movies with his entire family. So how does he balance work and family, a pressing problem for most families today?

"The first thing," he said, "is that I am a good listener and I require my kids to be good listeners, too. It helps in the whole area of being more mindful and emphatic, towards others. My kids will say to me 'Dad, you know, you are spending too much time at the office.' Or, 'Dad, you know we did not see enough of you this week.' I will always drop everything at work and go to meet those needs. For me that's the priority."While he is certainly passionate about his movie making, Spielberg says he is also passionate about being a dad.

"My first child (Max, 25) was born in 1985 and my entire paradigm changed and everything from that moment on had to do with my kid's well beings, and my career suddenly became a second choice.

"As a parent, he was drawn to War Horse and the
Adventures of Tintin."I wanted to make movies that moms and, dads, and kids could see and they could each measure it from all of their own experiences.

"Yet, another surprise from Spielberg is that he was diagnosed with the developmental reading disorder dyslexia six years ago when he took his daughter for an evaluation."It is something that I have had since I was a child," he explained. "It was not fun to go to elementary school and having other students and teachers not understand my reading problems.

"Today, " [I have] accommodated my life to the challenges of dyslexia and I feel very proud of that. When you are a child you have to achieve a different balance when you find yourself to be dyslexic.

"It also appears there are no limits to what you can achieve when you are passionate about your pursuits. Just ask Spielberg and his family

It's nearly $2000 for each month.

No wonder we are so broke!

We could stop this therapy but we really wanted her to speak! so we switched the insurance company next year, just to get cover for this expense.

We still had to pay out from our pocket 25% each session.

The second reason was, the therapy wasn't Apraxia targeted.

If you were paying for it you wanted to see improvement of her right? but I only saw very little and in fact Sunflower started to fit when she goes to therapy. That was the end.

It wasn't easy for 4 or 5years old girl to give up after school playtime with her friends and goes to therapy where it takes about 1hour each way.

She has been receiving the speech therapy from school 3 times a week. 2 in private and 1 in classroom.

Despite all these effort, if you've looked back her speech evaluations from school, it has been made very little change Do you know why? There hasn't been no targeting therapy.

Despite their find of articulation, working memory problem, there was very little targeted therapy in this area.

The speech therapy has so many different therapeutic style or way but generally either traditional or targeted. the school may not do this targeted therapy.

I wish I could show you her IEP. It so blank. No wonder she doesn't get anything.

What I have been doing during this Thanksgiving holiday, doing exercise during a holiday?
Yes! Just to avoid regression.

I'm not suppose to do this either the school, IEP is the one to support.
I requested to her school LD specialist to provide homework to keep up with her memory and avoid her regression during the holiday.

So What I really has been working on since last week was to just stimulate her brain, working on 3 numbers. If I say 3numbers and let her say 3numbers and reverse those numbers.
This excise was recommended by some dyslexia specialist to improve your working memory.

Yesterday I found remarkable improvement, at least to me.
I had been working on this number execise based on her pase, give her time to think because she tend to mixed up last 2numbers.
Yesterday, I tried to speed up those excises and I also asked her to say word and spell in her mind.

"Can" "Fan" "Van" "Man" "Fan" She pronounced all correct and spelled out so quick that I could not believe.

She could do it, it takes time but she could do it.

I decided to ignore those pressure from school, if she was stay behind much.......

I don't agree, she needs small setting but they should have been provide for her long time ago and one-on-one instructions.

She'll get it all, if she gets right setting. That program doesn't offer older age so we stopped but I was always thought about music.

I did not do a homework so I could not tell from my research but I heard that the Music Therapy should be good for right brain learner.

I believe the Dyslexia study Lab in children hospital, Gaab Lab also doing research with children who do play music and those who don't play music.

I also learned from friend of mine that the music therapy was offered in the children's early intervention program in different district.

Sunflower was receiving early intervention but there was no such therapy was mentioned by social worker.

Other things, give me puzzle in this district is all these 13 elementary school have different program beside math and language art and social science. Some school has music class 4 times a week.

Sunflower's school has only once a week.

The language as well. The most of those public school learns second language from Kindergarten, some school are even learn 3rd foreign language.

Sunflower's school is not, some are learning Spanish in Kinder and 5th grade but not the school wide.

All thse children reach 5th grade, I'm sure they learn differently.

How they achieve a goal evenly? I don't know, is it up to the parents who could afford aftershool? or provide private lesson for children?

I feels like I could not wait for district to provide for my child, only way to save and support her is to provide as much as I could in private, which isn't easy and cost a money but I don't see any other options. This is my instinct, the music would help.

I got out from school 8:15pm.

I had the LD specialist in this meeting.
We did not discuss much of her progress because result was obvious, we don't have much to talk about it.
Only things Sunflower's teacher mentioned was she does well with geometry 2-D, 3-D.
She also copy words, sentences beautifully, if you look at these sentences, you would not know if she is the terrible writer.

When it comes to spontaneous spelling, writing then real problem arise.
Her writing appears to be very messy. small, huge, reverse all over the place.
It's problem of processing of her brain.

Her processing problem seems a lot severe than you think which affects all those areas.
We have to work on to improve her working memories as well that's another huge issue.

School currently is proposing the Occupation assessment for her which we requested last year and school dropped our proposal.

Then you think, why now? and it'll be same examiner who dropped her needs of therapy year ago. So? should we pursue this proposal. I'm very sceptical about this.

I don't want my kids to get tested in school setting. I can not imagine she could do well. She has been experiencing a lot area of challenge and seen same teacher to get tested?

I don't see any good result coming out from there.

The LD specialist mentioned that her IEP isn't realistic.
There is no specific support strategy for reading, writing and math, I don't know what happened last year but it's mess and they apologized for it but you know? they can not take this one year of lost back and we have to move forward.

I agree some degree but think about that 1year, 1 year of negotiation and conflict. 1year of lost that's huge. And i know her teacher knows that you need tremendous energy to catch up.

They want to send her to small subset classroom because they think they could not provide service for the area of her needs.
What made me perplex is this district don't classify as the LD until 9years old. They put these LD/Dyslexia children into the category of Developmental Delay umbrella and wait until 9years old unless you have clear diagnose??? I'm not 100% clear about it but.......

As I mentioned before Her IEP is unrealistic and team all seems to know about it now.
The team wants to change this so we are expecting to have another meeting next week.

The Auditory device to support Sunflower's auditory support is on it's way.
Some specialist came to classroom and examined quality of device school has according to her teacher. It turned out that's not work well for her. So they'll provide new device for her in a couple of weeks. They could have done this beginning of this year if team followed Children's audiologists recommendation. It all delay. Founder of The Hallowell Center for Cognitive and Emotional Health.

Edward Hallowell’s biography reads like an intellectual rags-to-riches story.
At the end of first grade, I was still a poor reader, and, to this day, I’m painfully slow at getting through a book…I have a dyslexic brain, a disordered brain, call it what you will. My brain got me through Harvard as an English major and a pre-med minor. I graduated magna cum laude and went on to medical school, residency, and fellowship.
He has used his education and his gift to develop his own way of looking at dyslexia.
If you have dyslexia, you may learn to read, but you will read with difficulty. You will struggle to develop fluency, or the ease reading takes on for people who don’t have the condition. For them, reading becomes as automatic as riding a bike. They don’t have to think about maintaining their balance. That’s what it means to be fluent.
If you’re born with a brain that harbors dyslexia, I would say, “Lucky you! You have untestable and immeasurable potential. You’re a surprise package; no one knows what you can do, including you. But I can tell you from years of experience that you can do special things. You have many talents that can’t be taught, and a brain that eludes the predictive powers of our wisest sayers of sooth.

Wait for kids to be 7 years old. I don't think so.
Think about how much of academic works they have to encounter daily basis. It all starts soon they enter Kindergarten.

Sunflower was recommended to take LD testing from Kindergarten teacher so you can imagine how much effort children have to put on if the read and write doesn't come naturally to some children.

It'll be a lot harder if you would start 7years old and even harder if teacher do not know who to help.
Anyway, Gaab's Lab's hope is to help finding future prediction of those children who are from Dyslexic family. They could tell if they are going to need intervention to help reading and writing when they reach around Kindergarten, even before. They even hope to find out what intervention would help for each child such as Orton Gillingham or Lindamood-bell.. so on.
some are learn well with one some are work well with other.

They currently are also working with public and private kindergarten school children for free screening and testing, not in Cambridge but other districts. Cambridge? is not the part of this research because Cambridge did not accept their proposal. I could speculate why they did not go forward but that's so disturbing.
I could imagine why there are so many flustrated children and parents in this district.

http://www.childrenshospital.org/cfapps/research/data_admin/Site2547/mainpageS2547P0.html

She loves her teachers and classmates except since last few days.

Last weekend, she really showed her depression and tiredness. She stumbled, dropped stuffs, forget things. and she said"I'm really tired".

I did not ask her why, it's obvious there is no reason to dig her pain.

She also ask me that if she has a school today, that is not good sign either.

She has been talked about what they are doing at school but not last few days.

It seems I'm doing nothing for her like school and just complain.
I wish I know how to teach her. One of the biggest factors, that is not often discussed, is the energy behind the tutor or teacher. A positive teacher can make or break the difference in a child’s success. Oprah often refers to the importance of the energy we have behind every action we take. True presence, in every situation, helps students learn and grow.
On the flip side, if a teacher has a negative presence, that will greatly affect children, in an adverse way. When studies of effective teachers are done, there is no real difference in students success when you look at the education level of the teacher. Steve Jobs, I believe, has been a proponent of not giving an extra stipend to teachers who have higher degrees than a teaching credential.
This is met with much criticism in the world of teaching unions and teachers, and at first I was surprised too. However, the more work I do in the area of self-improvement, the more this makes sense. If a teacher with a doctorate has negative energy, that negative energy will “win” over the extra education.
Students are like magnets. They pick up the difference in the energy level of teachers very quickly. When a teacher has a motivational and inspirational attitude, and an attitude that anybody can learn anything, those students will pick up on that energy. Conversely, if a teacher has a negative attitude, students will pick up on that as well, and not try as hard.
Here’s the thing. In a negative atmosphere, our brains stop seeking options. When our brain stops seeking options, it starts to shut down. In a brain that is shut down, new neural networks are not being built. Hence, learning is greatly impaired in classrooms where there is a strong negative influence.
The world of education is shifting. I predict that test scores alone will not continue to pose such a strong effect on our education system, because there are many people like me, who see the effects of positivity versus negativity in classrooms across the world. If we truly desire change, we will advocate and support teachers who have a positive mental state of mind. This can either start at the top of the chain (President Obama, this is you!) to every parent and classroom teacher that has a vested interest in the education of our children.
We have intelligence beyond our imagination, and it’s time that that intelligence start being noticed in our educational system!

She did not say any. Do you feel sad because you can not read?
she quietly said yes with tears. I was of course hopeless, knowing nothing I could do except begging school for support. I have been doing this for more than years.

I have to admit that she is a bit depressed. Her big smile is disappearing. Her word "tired" came back again. Is school tough? yes! Do you want to try other small class? "No! I want to go to other school where teachers could help me." She wants to go to the school where she could get real help, nourish her splits.

All the school stuff telling me has been about her frustration, aggravation and aggression caused by this inability to do what other could do. I do get different answer from Sunflower.
She denied all these behavior, she may shows for second but she is trying. If she could not express her feeling that's hopeless.

I'll switch a subject, this is about me and Sunflower.
She often asked me how was my childhood was, sounds like she is looking for someone who could related to her struggle(luta), looking for a friend who could shear her feeling. She and I are very close.

Yes! Honey. I did not have many friends like you(sunflower) do because I was a very sick child.( I had an asthma until the age of 12) My school friends used to picked on me, even girls who i thought was a friend, and my daughter said, Mom you have a friend "me!" that's why you wanted to have me right?......................."Mommy you have a friend, real friend"

Two of parents, Mark is one of them, whose children are still in Cambridge system but looks like they spent fortune to get to this stage. All of their children are A students.

Terry's son(outplace from district) he is doing great too.

Be honest, I'm terrified and thinking how am I gonna get those money to support Sunflower.

Her current IEP is based on IEP issued on February, so same story there is no significant support to improve reading and writing.

Now I'm paying for Advocate and independent testing(begged my parents) and how am i gonna get money for her tutoring. Fundraising?

I have to get the OG tutor or get her a summer program in Carroll or Landmark.

If IQ is going down there is something wrong with services. The Developmental Delay is not solution that i should advocate to push Sunflower's teacher next time she mentioned about trying out DD class.

Sunflower rather wants to suffer in her current class than other setting. She clearly knows what it's like to be in there. She went through the 2 Summer OSE program and rainbow that she now really knows the difference. She is really clear to know about her struggle and where she wants to be(Caroll or Landmark, where kids are having a same learning style.)

This Dr Schultz is nice, he is really listen to parents and I hope his pilot program plan, start from next year, go through I understand that it takes 5 years to know this is really working, at least. My kid would be in middle school by them though can you believe?

I struggled through my school years, not as savior as Sunflower but I just could not watch her. I'm dealing this day by day. tears and tears. I could not help it.

We all agree that Dyslexia children are blight, smart, and creative.
