Holy Week 2018: 7 Beautiful Churches in Manila You Could Visit for Visita Iglesia

During Holy Week, one of the most common traditions done by Catholics in the country is the Visita Iglesia (which translates to "Visiting Churches"), usually done on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday.

Here, devotees visit 7 to 14 different churches, where they pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament or commemorate the 14 Stations of the Cross as a way to remember the passion of Christ.

If you're planning to do your yearly Visita Iglesia in Metro Manila, but still don't know which churches to visit, fret not because we're giving you 7 historical and beautiful churches you could add to your Holy Week itineraries!

1. Manila Cathedral

Located inside the walled city of Intramuros, the Manila Cathedral-Basilica is not only known to be the premier church, but also the Mother of all Churches in the Country. It's the only church to be elevated to the rank of a Basilica as per the Pope's initiative.

The church has had 8 renovations since it was first built in 1571, having been through different moments in history - from wars to fires and storms. Just by looking through its bronze central door, you could even see the important moments of history that the church, and the whole of Intramuros, had witnessed.

2. San Agustin Church

Just a few steps from Manila Cathedral is San Agustin Church which is under The Order of St. Augustine. It's also one of the four Philippine baroque churches constructed during the Spanish colonial period which is now tagged as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The first stone church to be built in Manila by the Spaniards since their move from Cebu, San Agustin Church's architecture reflects the Baroque style, with its Corinthian columns and carved wooden doors. It was able to survive the major earthquakes, wars, and bombings, and is also known to be the burial sites of history's notable figures, including Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, Juan de Salcedo, and Guido de Lavezaris.

3. Minor Basilica of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz

Also known by many as Binondo Church, Minor Basilica of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz is located inside the Chinatown district in Manila. It's named after Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, a Filipino-Chinese martyr, who used to train and serve in the church back he was young. As it's usually visited by the Fil-Chinese community, masses here are held in Filipino, English, Mandarin, and Hokkien.

The church was built in 1596, and was renovated a number of times after it sustained damages from wars and natural disasters. The only thing that remained from the original structure is the octagonal bell tower.

4. San Sebastian Church

San Sebastian Church, or Minor Basilica de San Sebastian, is known to be the only all-steel church in the Philippines, and is designated to be both a National Historical Landmark and a National Cultural Treasure in 1973, and 2011, respectively.

Designed by Spanish architect Genaro Palacios back in the 1880s, this church is reminiscent of a Neo-Gothic style inspired by the Burgos Cathedral of Spain. During the time it was designed and constructed, it was said to be fire and earthquake proof. Today, however, it has been damaged with rust and corrosion and has been put into restoration for it to go back to its original state and beauty.

5. Nuestra Señora de Gracia

Nuestra Senora de Gracia Church or Guadalupe Church is a baroque church in Makati that's under the administration of the Augustinian friars of the Province of Santo Nino de Cebu. It honors the Marian image of the Our Lady of the Guadalupe from Spain.

The church features a mixture of different architectural styles, from Neo-Romanesque-Gothic facade, to the touches of Baroque which one could see from its exteriors. Like all the other ones built during the Spanish period, Guadalupe Church also saw and survived earthquakes and natural disasters. However, it was after World War II that it faced its darkest time, when the monastery was ordered to be demolished so its stones will be used for the reconstruction of the damaged Manila Cathedral. It was restored again in 1970, serving its parishioners even until today.

6. Santo Niño De Tondo Church

Established in 1572, Santo Niño de Tondo Church is one of the first churches that the Spanish friars established in Luzon. It also houses the image of the Infant Jesus which originally came from Acapulco, Mexico, making it one of the most visited churches in the country.

Every January of each year, the church is flocked by devotees to celebrate the feast day of Sto. Niño with a procession.

7. Our Lady of the Abandoned Parish Church, Marikina

Our Lady of the Abandoned Parish in Marikina was consecrated in 1690 and has been home to one of the miraculous images of the Virgin Mary. It's also known to have the third longest Holy Week procession in the country, with 70 floats back in 2017. While it has suffered major damages after the Philippine-American war and World War II, this church was completely refurbished and reconstructed in 1957 with the help of different religious and civic organizations.

For most Filipino Catholics, Visita Iglesia (translates to: Church Visit) is one of the most important activities during Holy Week where devotees visit and pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament in at least seven different churches.

Until the 70s, people recited all fourteen stations in one church, but the more recent custom is to pray two stations at each church. Traditionally, it is practiced every Maundy Thursday but is now done in any day of the Holy Week before Good Friday.

Carmel of St. Therese of the Child Jesus

Established in 1926
The lot where Carmel of St. Therese of the Child Jesus is standing on was a donation of the rich Hemady family, the former landowners of the New Manila estate. The first Carmelite nuns who came to Manila were not Spaniards but French nun from Indo-China specifically Vietnam.

Located on the Ateneo de Manila University campus, the Church of Gesu is on Sacred Heart Hill and is believed to be the highest point in Loyola Heights. The church's triangular structure represents the Holy Trinity and the Ateneo's three-fold mission and vision.

After Mother Jeronima, the founder of the first Catholic monastery in Manila, died in 1630, the monastery was moved from one place to another until it was in its present location. Devotees have since offered eggs to the monastery in exchange of a good weather for a particular date.

Located on the University of the Philippines Campus in Diliman, the Parish features the well known double crucifix by National Artist Napoleon Abueva and floor design by Arturo Luz who is also a National Artist. The first Mass celebrated was in 1955 by the Archbishop of Manila.

The chapel became a Shrine in 2006 and Bishop Honesto Ongtioco presided over the dedication rites.

Also in Palawan: Coron and El Nido have both direct flights from Manila. Best way to reach Coron from Puerto Princesa is a 1-hour plane ride or if you don't want to splurge, there is an 8-hour boat ride to visit the Calauit Safari Park, be in awe at the Twin Lagoon, scuba dive and snorkel to see the Sunken Japanese Wrecks. While you're at it, stay at Coron Reef Pension House for a night or two (starts at P600 for 2pax).

: You can also reach El Nido from Puerto Princesa via a 5-hour Daytripper van ride (starts at P850) so you can have a piece of peace at Nacpan Beach, see the beauty of nature at the Small Lagoon and if you're brave enough, you can Shark Dive with friends. A day trip would be enough but if you want to stay for the night, book at Rock View Lodge (starts at P560).

Boracay

Known for: Its powder white beaches and clear waters. It is the Beach Capital of the Philippines and is one of the major destinations in the world. As a matter of fact, Boracay is often called "the world's most beautiful tropical island."
Getting there: There are direct flights from Manila to Caticlan Airport or Kalibo Airport. From Caticlan, it's a 15-minute bus ride to Caticlan Port followed by another 15-minute boat ride to Boracay Island. From Kalibo Airport, it is an hour or two-hour bus ride to Caticlan Port.
Getting around: Motortrike (P40-P50) or by foot

Getting there: Manila to Cebu by plane takes less than an hour and by ferry which takes 24 hours.

Getting there: Naga City is the heart of Bicol which is why it's the common ground when you want to explore the region. There are daily flights from Manila to the Naga airport which takes 45 minutes or via bus which takes 8-9 hours. From Naga, you can reach CWC in just 20-30 minutes; Albay in 1.5-2 hours via van (P140); Caramoan in 4 hours via van to San Jose Port and then boat ride to Caramoan Port; Subic Beach, Sorsogon in 4 hours.

Known for: Its pleasant climate. Baguio is one of the most famous cities in the Philippines and has been celebrated as the Summer Capital since it is cooler than the normal hot weather in the country.
Getting there: Via Victory Liner or Genesis Bus in Cubao, it would take 5-6 hours to reach Baguio. Depending on the bus company, fare should start at P450. To reach Sagada, there are hourly bus trips from 6am until 1pm every day and would take 5-6 hours, rate starts at P420. You can also reach Baguio via a private car, make sure you don't get lost and use the Waze app.

'Simbang Gabi' (Night Mass) is a Christmas tradition of hearing mass for nine consecutive days, December 16 to December 24, and is widely practiced in the country by the Catholics. Also called 'Misa de Gallo' (Spanish for 'Rooster's Mass'), Simbang Gabi is traditionally held as a novena of dawn Masses, but Churches also have anticipated Masses held during the previous night.

This tradition traces back during the Spanish era as dawn Masses for the farmers before they begin their work early in the morning. Now, almost every Church (if not all) in Manila that celebrate Simbang Gabi have food stalls awaiting hungry parishioners after celebrating Mass--Christmas favorites such as puto bumbong and bibingka are made fresh and served hot, paired best with hot coffee and tsokolate. Another tradition practiced by many parishioners is to make a wish after completing all nine days of Simbang Gabi.

It has been a tradition of Filipinos to decorate their houses with Christmas lights as soon as December kicks in. But one street in the metro took the practice to the next level, way high enough for them to be recognized by the Department of Tourism as a tourist destination.
On Policarpio Street, Mandaluyong, houses are dressed up with a more than usual number of Christmas lights. One house in particular, aptly named House of Lights, is literally covered with Christmas lights all over. Another popular Policarpio destination, the House of Santa, has Santa Claus in all forms and sizes looking over its balcony.

Non-residents are welcome to stroll down the street and have their photos taken at the facades of the glittering houses. After picture-taking, you might want to browse the selection in the neighborhood’s tiangge.

Scrooge the Musical

No Christmas can be complete without reading or watching any rendition of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. You’re in luck because as a holiday season treat, Repertory Philippines is running their adaptation of Leslie Bricusse’s 22-year old Scrooge the Musical.

Scrooge the Musical tells the story of old miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who on Christmas Eve, is visited by the ghost of his late business partner and the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. As the night unfolds, Scrooge undergoes a profound transformation.

Miguel Faustmann and Chinggoy Alonso will alternately play the role of Ebenezer Scrooge. The show is around two hours long and will take you into a roller coaster ride of emotions (cheery, spooky, sad, guilty, and warm and fuzzy). Watch this show with your family to get a renewed sense of what Christmas truly means.
Schedule: Scrooge the Musical will run until December 14, 2014 with shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and matinee shows on Saturdays and Sundays at 3:30 p.m.

The Christmas on Display roots its 57-year tradition in the COD Department Stores in Avenida and later in Cubao. In 2002, Ortigas offered Greenhills Shopping Center to be the new home for the well-loved display. Greenhills Shopping Center is now on its 12th year of hosting the moving mannequin show.

This year, witness the journey of the Three Kings in the 12th Christmas on Display (COD)in Greenhills Shopping Center. The COD will run on a daily basis until January 4, 2015, with the show lasting approximately 15 minutes, from 6:30 PM until 11:30 PM. Admission is free.
Along with the annual Christmas on Display in Greenhills, the Christmas Night Market (November 15, 2014 to January 4, 2015), featuring shopping and dining delights will be open. At the same time, the Christmas Bangketa Fair will run from November 15, 2014 to January 4, 2015.
Nutkraker: Pasko na Naman Muli by Ballet Philippines

Nutkraker: Pasko na Naman Muli combines excerpts from The Nutcracker and original choreographies set to the tune of Filipino Christmas carols. The second half showcases a medley of Filipino Christmas carols performed in dance. Giant Lantern Festival

Every year, since 1908, San Fernando, Pampanga, the Christmas Capital of the Philippines, hosts a festival of lanterns, called Liligan Parul. Coron is a 689.10 sq. km. municipality in Palawan, comprised of eastern Busuanga island, Coron island, and a couple of scattered small islets surrounded by the West Philippine sea and Sulu Sea.

Blessed with plentiful white beaches, clear blue green waters, mangrove forests, lakes, and bountiful coral reefs, Coron has become a go-to destination for nature oriented-activities like snorkeling, diving, and island hopping.

Coron Town Market

Although not as awarded and acclaimed as Boracay and El Nido, Coron is regarded by many Filipinos and foreigners alike as one of the best places to visit in the Philippines. Because of the islands proximity to Busuanga airport and the number of budget-friendly inns within the town proper, Coron is considered the more-accessible and more budget friendly brother of El Nido, Palawan. Less commercial and more laid back, Coron also gets plus points for being relatively serene for the most part of the year.

Things to Do and Must-see Attractions in Coron, Palawan
Island Hopping, Snorkeling, and Diving
Most of your time in Coron will be spent hopping to and fro the tiny islets that make up the municipality.
Coron Island – A 30 minute boat ride from Coron Town proper will take you to Coron Island, famous for towering limestone formations, blue-green shallow waters, and the following inland lakes:
a.) Kayangan Lake – considered the cleanest lake in the Philippines. Kayangan can be accessed via a short 15 minute hike from the island’s dock. At the highest point of the hike, you will be enthralled by the majestic view of the towering limestone formations surrounded by clear waters. (Note: the hike can be challenging for children and the elderly.)

b.) Baraccuda Lake- located just by Kayangan lake and is accessible via going down some wooden planks. The lake is famous for having thermo-clines or distinct layers of cold and hot water.

c.) Twin Lagoon – From Kayangan, you will take a boat to the nearby Twin Lagoon, located at the Calis Mountain. The lagoons are divided by a limestone wall. To go back and forth the lagoon, you are to swim through a small and narrow opening or climb a ladder when it’s high tide.

Siete Pecados - means ‘seven sins’ in Spanish. But there’s nothing sinful about these islands. On the contrary, this group of seven islands clustered together is considered heaven by divers because of its bountiful reefs and colorful marine treasures.

Banol Beach – When on an island hopping tour, lunch is usually served at the Banol beach. You might also take this pit stop time to swim and take advantage of its powdery sands and shallow waters.

Japanese Shipwrecks – What sets Coron apart from other Philippine beaches are the numerous wreck sites for diving. There are at least ten Japanese ship wreck diving spots available for beginner to advanced divers. The Skeleton Wreck can be seen even by just snorkeling.

Hiking
Mt. Tapyas – is a mere 30-minute trek from Coron Town. There used to be a giant cross atop Mt. Tapyas. It was destroyed when supertyphoon Yolanda passed by the town.
What to eat in Coron, Palawan
Coron cuisine is no different from what’s available in Luzon. Restaurants around town serve the usual –silog fare and grills. Cashew nuts are produced in the island and are usually bought as pasalubong.

Recommended trip duration:
Two to three full days are enough to maximize Coron’s attractions. Add another day if you want to take a side trip to Cuilion Island or Calauit Safari Park.
Side trip:
Culion Island – was a former leper colony under the Commonwealth administration. When at Culion, make sure you visit the historical Culion Museum and the old Spanish fort and church made out of coral rocks. From Coron, you can take an hour and a half boat ride to reach Culion.
Calauit Island – is a 3, 700 hectare protected land area where African animals such as giraffes, zebras and gazelles roam free with Philippine animals like the Palawan bearcat, mousedeer and peacock pheasant.
From Coron, you may either ride a boat (4 hours) to Calauit or ride a van (3.5 hours).
Where to stay in Coron
Save:
Coron Backpacker Guesthouse is located in Coron town, Busuanga Island. The guesthouse is very much like a native Filipino nipa hut, standing on pillars over the sea. Rates start at P500/night.
Splurge:
Two Seasons Coron, located at the Malaroyroy island offers an array of six styles of accommodation spread amongst the island’s lush tropical gardens with easy access to the beach. Rates start at P25,000/night.

How to Get to Coron, Palawan
By Plane: Pal Express and Cebu Pacific have direct flights from Manila to Busuanga Airport. Travel time is around one hour from Manila.
Upon arrival at Busuanga Airport, ride a van (available outside the airport) to Coron town proper. Sea transfers to the key islands can be arranged with your hotel. Travel time is around 30 to 45 minutes.

Established in the 1500s, Binondo-- the oldest Chinatown in the world-- is home to Filipino-Chinese communities and commerce. It is especially popular for its Chinese New Year celebrations, gastronomic offerings, specialty stores, and places of worship.
Places of interest: Minor Basilica of San Lorenzo Ruiz (Binondo church); restaurants along Ongpin, Escolta, Carvajal, and Salazar Streets.
Tips: Chinatown is a network of small roads and tiny alleys. Parking is difficult and walking is highly recommended. Have cash and loose change on hand as most establishments only accept cash payments.

4. Shop for less at Divisoria.
Divisoria (or Divi to its patrons) is a district at the heart of Manila, comprised of malls and markets that sell virtually everything you need at dirt-cheap prices. Considered as every bargain hunter's shopping mecca, Divisoria is the place to go when you're in need of houseware, clothes, accessories, costumes, toys, food, textile, wedding gowns, and all sorts of supplies imaginable.

The district is big, busy, and buzzing with activity. But despite its notoriety for its tight alleys and hellish human traffic, Filipinos (and foreigners) still enjoy trooping to Divisoria. Why? Simply because items in Divisoria are cheaper than their counterparts sold elsewhere in the metro. For instance, a fashion ring priced at P300 in a mall boutique can be bought at Divisoria for only P35. You can even haggle further and arrive at a lower price if you know the art of “tawad” and/or are buying in bulk or wholesale (6 items is the standard).

How to go to Divisoria:
By car: Human and jeepney traffic make it nearly impossible for cars to enter the Divisoria area especially during the holiday season (October to January). If you really need to bring your car, head to the 168 Mall as early as 7:00AM in order to secure a parking slot (from Reigna Regente Street, enter Felipe Street). Another option is to park along the side streets of Chinatown, just by the Divisoria perimeter.
By trains: Ride the LRT 1 or LRT 2 lines to Doroteo Jose/ Recto station. Ride a Divisoria-bound jeepney. Get off at Tutuban Mall or at Recto corner Reina Regente.

Vacation at Bantayan Island, Cebu

There’s nothing more I crave for every start of the summer (besides a good meal and ice cream) than going to the beach. It literally beckons me. It’s a family tradition and one that I’ve kept alive now that I have my own family. This year, we decided to visit Bantayan Island which is just a bit north-west of Cebu in the Visayan Sea.

Getting There
First, you will need to fly to Cebu unless you’re already there. From Manila, we took a very early flight to Cebu so that we could get to the island by noon. Once we arrived at the airport we headed straight to the taxi stand. You’ll head to the North Bus terminal and take a bus to Hagnaya. The bus ride will take about 3 hours so make sure to pack some snacks. The taxi ride will cost you about P120 – P150, while the bus ride will cost P150 as of today’s writing.

There’s no need to worry where to get off, because the bus will take you directly to the Hagnaya pier where you’ll board a ferry. But first, don’t forget to purchase some snacks while you’re at the bus station. And this is a must unless you have your own snacks already with you. One does get hungry on a long bus ride.

After the 3 hour air-conditioned bus ride through Cebu and its island scenery, you will finally arrive at Hagnaya Pier where you will take a ferry to the island. Once you get off the bus, head towards the ticket booths and purchase a Ferry Ticket (P170) with any of the boats heading to the island. Typically, there are ferries leaving for the island every hour, with the last ferry leaving at around 5:30pm.

Around this time it would be a good idea to take some anti-sea sickness medication, because you will be heading out onto the Visayan Sea. If you easily get sea sick this would be a good idea. Otherwise, enjoy the 75 minute ferry ride to your destination: the white sands of Bantayan Island!
At around this time I took a long deserved nap as I’ve been probably awake several hours already. Besides, I wanted to be up and about when we arrived so that we can go swimming right away. When we got near the island, it was looking more and more like the vacation I was looking forward to.

Once you arrive at the pier, you will be fetched by the resorts driver if you’ve booked early on. I would suggest you do this in advance, since resorts do get filled up quickly, especially during summer. If not, you can take any of the tricycles to a resort of your liking. The people are very helpful in that respect, and they can point you to the different resorts they have. We decided to stay at Beach Placid in Santa Fe.

After a 5 minute drive from the pier to the resort we finally arrived at our destination: paradise and white sands. It was time to break out the good old sun screen. With a view like this from your room, who wouldn’t be tempted to dive right into the water?

This is what I call a vacation!

Where to Eat
Luckily, one of the great places to eat at on Bantayan Island was the open air restaurant of the beach resort we were staying at: Beach Placid. Their open air restaurant boasts a great menu and has that great island feel decor. Talk about convenience, since we were only a few minutes away from the restaurant!

We tried their Pork Humba (P180) and Breaded Fish Fillet with Mushroom Sauce (P180). My wife and sister in law enjoyed their food so much that we had to order a second round of plates to appease their appetite.

There are of course other great places you could eat at on Bantayan Island. Most of the bars and restaurants are located in Santa Fe town proper, just a short hop away from the resorts. We decided to explore this area during dinner. So before we headed out into town I asked the front desk what place they would recommend, and Cou Cou Bar was given. We got ourselves some transport and from the resort it’s a 10 minute padyak (pedicab) ride to get there. The cost of the padyak is P20 per person.

The place was packed with tourists and that was surprising, since we haven’t even hit the high season yet. We were craving some familiar food, but we also wanted to try out the seafood, so we came up with a compromise. We decided on getting Sinigang na Baboy and Fish in Coconut Sauce. The fish it turns out was Mackerel bathed in coconut sauce. The total meal cost us P535 with a platter of rice.

What to Do
Besides the obvious like lying around on the beach, getting a tan, and swimming, you can also go rent a banka and go island hopping. You can visit the Virgin Island, supposedly to have really clear and blue/green waters. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to do the island hopping part since we were only staying 3 days. But what we did instead was rent scooters and explored the island.
The scooters cost around P250 – P350 depending on where you rent them. At the resort it cost us P350 per scooter for a 24 hour rental. You also have the option of renting them on a per hour basis or 8 hour basis for a bit less. It was P300 for an 8 hour rental, so we figured the extra P50 wouldn’t hurt since we were still going to visit the market place the next day. You’ll have to gas up the scooters out of your own pockets, but that’s easily done since almost every few meters somebody is selling gas for P60 – P62 pesos. It’s a bit expensive, but a 2 liter fill up will get you through a whole day of motoring on the island.

As a safety precaution, I would suggest that only those who actually know how to drive a motorcycle should rent scooters. This is because there are areas on the main highway that do have cars and large trucks traveling on the same street. This is also because a helmet is not required here. Otherwise, I would ride with somebody who knows how to ride a motorcycle, or you could also rent a bicycle for P70 per hour. We were also told that you could rent a padyak for P100 for the whole day, but that is sans the driver -- you’ll have to do the hard labor yourself while your friends get to ride along.

What to Visit
If you’ve opted to rent a scooter or a bicycle, it’s highly suggested you take the path that is less travelled. These are usually the paths the locals take through their Barangay. Not only would this give you a chance to see the natural beauty of the island, but also the chance to interact with the locals. We decided to visit Saint Peter’s Church which is located in the Municipality of Bantayan (about 30 minutes by scooter). Along the way, we stopped at a few places to appreciate the natural beauty of the island.

About 30-45 minutes later, we arrived at Saint Peter’s church in Bantayan. This church is nearly 500 years old and was established on June 11, 1580. An interesting fact about the church is that it’s made out of coral, and provides for an interesting architectural look and feel.

If you still would like to use your scooter to ride, then you can head to another municipality of Bantayan Island. We headed north to Madridejos so that we could visit Kota Park. This place is famous for its Spanish fort ruins and its Bontay Baywalk. Be prepared to be on your scooter for a while since it would take you about 3 hours to get there (unless you ride really fast). The ride going there though is really fun, since there would be a lot of interesting sights to look at.

The bottom line on every vacation is that you’re supposed to get some relaxation time and some needed rest---you’re not supposed to go on a vacation and be more stressed. Vacation is a time when you forget those things that clutter your life. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy when you’re at Bantayan Island.

Visita Iglesia Itinerary: Seven Churches in Manila to Pray at This Holy Week

Visita Iglesia (Church Visitation) is the Catholic tradition of praying the fourteen stations of the cross in seven different churches during Holy Week. Pre-war, Visita Iglesia was done in Intramuros' seven churches. After earthquakes and warfare destroyed five of the seven original churches, it has been acceptable to recite the prayers in other churches.

If you're planning to do your Visita Iglesia within Manila this coming Holy Week, you might want to put these seven beautiful and historical churches in your itineraries.

1. San Agustin Church, Intramuros

Even during the process of repair, there's no denying the grandeur of San Agustin Church. Founded in 1571, this oldest stone church and Wedding Capital of the Philippines is part of the seven churches in Intramuros, where local Visita Iglesia first started.

In 1993, UNESCO declared San Agustin Chuch as a World Heritage Site-- a feat for a Baroque structure that survived centuries of calamaties and war.

2. Minor Basilica of St. Lorenzo Ruiz, Binondo

More popularly known as the Binondo Church, this imposing structure was founded by the Dominicans in 1596, to serve the Chinese citizens who converted to Catholicism. This church gets its name from St. Lorenzo Ruiz, a former altar boy who eventually became the first Filipino saint.

3. Sta. Cruz Parish, Sta. Cruz

Like the nearby Binondo Church, Sta. Cruz Parish was also built to cater to the Chinese Catholics residing in the Binondo area. The original church built in 1608 was destroyed during the World War 2. The present peach-colored, European style structure was erected in 1957.

4. Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, Quiapo

Famous as home of the said-to-be miraculous Black Nazarene, Quiapo Church has a long history of bouts with earthquakes and fires since its first commemoration in 1586. But the church persisted and currently stands in its cream-white glory amidst the busy and colorful Quiapo District.

5. Basilica of San Sebastian, Claro M. Recto St.

San Sebastian Church, a beautiful structure fashioning the Neo-Gothic architecture common in England, is the only all-steel church in Asia. According to Ambeth de Ocampo, a Filipino historian, Gustav Eiffel--the designer of the Eiffel Tower--may have been involved in designing San Sebastian Church. It is now part of the National Historical Landmarks in the Philippines.

6. St. Vincent de Paul Church, San Marcelino

Adjacent to Adamson University along San Marcelino, St. Vincent de Paul Parish Church is a humble looking abode that, like above mentioned churches, has been rebuilt many times after war. This church, run by the Vincentians, concecrates the Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.

7. Our Lady of Remedies Parish, Malate

The Malate Church is a Baroque-style church, a few steps away from the Manila Bay. One of the oldest churches in Manila, the Malate church houses a Virgin Mary statue that dates back in 1624.

Wanderlust has led me to far off places, but it has also brought me back home at this new and colorful backpacker haven in Makati called MNL Boutique Hostel.

While I am not new to the concept of hostels, I often wonder why traveler's hostels are not so commonplace in Manila. I remember my first try at hostel life back in 2009 in Singapore. Apart from the place being accessible to the nearest public transports and key commercial areas of the city, what I appreciated most is the social aspect of hostel life -- the owners were hands-on and conversed with you daily, you get to meet and greet and mingle with dorm mates and other guests, and just feel downright at home, no stiff environment whatsoever.

So it's pretty awesome news to hear that MNL Boutique Hostel started the year with a bang -- it's been receiving good reviews at Agoda, and received Best Atmosphere Award at hostelbookers.com in January, barely a month after opening doors to its very first guest.

MNL Boutique Hostel is a two-level hostel conveniently located at the street right behind A. Venue Mall in Makati Avenue. It's exact address is Valdez corner Santiago Streets, but the best landmark would be just to look out for the most colorful structure in the street. Purple, green and fuschia patterns decorate the facade of the hostel. Bad with directions or are a Manila first-timer? Not a problem. Maica La'O, one of the owners, shared to me that they decided to put up MNL as they were inspired by the many chic, comfortable, and friendly hostels that they have encountered in their travels to Europe. 'Most locals are still new to this concept,' Maica tells me, sharing how there are people inquiring that are still quite shy to the idea of having to share a room with other people. One wall at the common area of the hostel is painted with the quote, "There are no strangers, just friends waiting to be made." And if you enter MNL with that mindset, you will definitely make friends from around the world (and learn more about the world while you're at it).

Maica shares that currently, majority of the guests are tourists from different parts of the world who arrive in Manila for a side trip, and fly out to different beaches and regions of the country as their main vacation. There are some, though, that extend their stay for days, weeks, and sometimes over a month, just simply declaring the hostel as their second home. With such a fun and friendly atmosphere at the hostel, you will be tempted to stay longer (even I wanted to stay an extra night just to hang out!).

Room rates are affordable, be it their dorm type or their double/twin rooms. Beds start at P550/night, and they occasionally offer discounts. Don't let the shared bathrooms scare the picky traveller in you. Maica tells me that they, too, are very particular when it comes to toilets and showers ('What we have here is a place where we'll stay ourselves," she says). They made sure each toilet and shower has its own separate door, shower heads are wide and will generously cascade water on you, and the common bathroom areas are always kept clean by their maintenance.

Inclusive of your stay are an 8-inch spring matress, hotel grade linen and pillows (honestly comfier than ones I have at home), duvet for all private rooms, a personal console per bed (for your electronics, accessories, and other personal items), a lamp, and an electrical socket. There are lockers for dorm rooms. All the spartan space of the house that it once was has been given a makeover by MNL: splashes of color, wall art, and local vibe. It spells out hip, fun, and young.

Also included in your stay is a simple breakfast spread until 10am of toast, assorted jam, coffee and tea. A refrigerator, toaster oven and microwave are available at the kitchen and pantry, should you wish to bring in food or bring home leftovers. At the common area, you can read books, use the computer (free Wi-Fi as well), or watch television or pop a DVD. MNL is very casual and laid back, so always feel at home there.

What keeps people coming back to MNL is not only just to rest their heads and have a good night's sleep -- their BYOB (Bring Your Own Beer) afternoons and evenings (even late night) have gained a following for both locals and tourists alike. Just grab a beer or your drink of choice at the nearest store, and hang out on the hostel's side walk to meet new people and hear their stories.

Sidewalk Stories: More fun in The Philippines

Make friends with people all around the world by asking them where they're from, and why they travel--and be prepared with your own stories as well. If a balut vendor happens to pass by the street, expect some food adventures to be made with the foreign guests. At one BYOB, it was interesting to hear a South African's perspective of how he found Manila; it was also refreshing to receive travel tips from a foreigner on the best beaches he has visited in the country (there's still so much to discover!). Some guests were curious to try out chicharon after we talked about it, so we bought some at 7-11 to let them taste it. Other guests were familiar with our delicacies, and wanted to know if the 'happy horse beer' is just an urban legend (let me know if you've tried it yourself!).

Just by making tambay at this little corner of the hostel will make you appreciate Manila, and it will also take you to places around the world with every person's little hometown and travel anecdotes.

In one clear-cut phrase, this is exactly how New Zealand Tourism describes their country in their latest campaign slogan which quickly summarizes everything there is to know about this unspoilt place. Experiencing it first-hand, I can tell you that it is what it says – 100% no sugar coating.

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much when I decided to come to New Zealand. All I had from the travel agency was a picture of a lamb and a daffodil. I was actually very curious about what it has to offer in terms of activities and places of interest. But I knew this trip would be different.

The Road trip

From Christchurch airport, we drove three hours to the farmhouse where are staying. Despite the jet-lag, my first New Zealand car trip kept me awake all the way. It was like reading my favourite story book for the first time! The lush green pastures, the flock of sheep grazing on rolling hills, the rivers making its way to the sea, the snow-capped mountains, the cool scent of pine trees all came to life in front of me. And in those three hours, I knew exactly what to do for the rest of my stay... to extend the rest of my stay.

...That road trip was four years ago.

Nowadays, with budget airlines, travel promotions and simpler visa procedures, it is way faster and cheaper to come to New Zealand. Let me make it even easier in three simple steps:

STEP 1: Choose your best season

Each season offers a unique travel and scenic experience. The perfect timing depends on one’s idea of a holiday and I guarantee that there’s absolutely something for everyone to enjoy any time of the year – from tranquil journeys to extreme adventures! Here’s what to do and expect to see according to season:

Eat: Sweet, Spice, and Everything Nice!

Bicolanos are known for their heat-tolerant tongues. Home to spicy fare such as the Bicol Express, pinangat, and laing, this southern Luzon province is a destination for daredevil, spice-seeking foodies.

But aside from these tongue-numbing dishes, there are plenty more to try when in Bicol. Case in point is the kinalas, which is a noodle soup with a gravy-like sauce-- a favorite among the locals.

Pray: Viva la Virgen!

Every third weekend of September, all devotees of the miraculous "Ina" flock to Naga City to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia. A patroness of the Bicol region, "Ina" is one of the most revered Marian images in the Philippines.

The religious observance starts nine days (the second Friday of September) before the feast day itself (third Saturday). The first highlight of the festival is the traslacion during which the image of the city’s patroness is transferred to the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral. The festival reaches its climax during the fluvial parade down the Bicol River, where a raft (pagoda) bearing the Holy Image then brings it to the Basilica. Escorting the pagoda are canoes, other bamboo rafts and decorated motorboats. All the while, resounding shouts of “Viva La Virgen” and “Viva El Divino Rostro” meant for the Holy Images (the second being a framed image of Jesus) are heard.

Try wakeboarding.

Just a 5-7 minute car ride from the Naga airport is Camsur Watersports Complex (CWC). A haven for extreme sports, CWC is a six hectare complex for wakeboarding and sand dune riding.

But if the water skiing isn’t your thing, you can opt to do lighter sports. CWC also has a pool, clubhouse, restaurant, pro shop (where you can get wakeboards, life vests, helmets, board shorts, and crocs, to name a few items), and an area for beach volleyball.

Back in 2011, hotel operator Waterfront Philippines Inc. announced its multi-million, three part renovation program to further improve its flagship property in Cebu, the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino. “Waterfront Hotel in Cebu has been an institution for 15 years. It's about time that we decided to give our clients something fresh and exciting,” Waterfront’s Assistant to the President, Weslie Gatchalian, declared.

The project is divided into three major phases: the renovation of the grand and lower lobbies of the hotel; the renovation of the function rooms; and eventually the renovation of the larger convention facilities of the hotel. Each phase costs around P100 million.

Waterfront completed the first phase of the renovation last May 3, 2012 but it was only last July 27, when the grand lobby was presented to members of the media, VIPs, guests, and other stakeholders. A swanky cocktail party with a fashion show for Cebu's top fashion designers was held to complement the lobby's grandeur.

Gatchalian expressed what guests can expect from Waterfront’s P100 Million lobby: "Separate canopies and entrances have been built for the hotel, casino and convention areas, which will certainly improve traffic patterns. Guests are guaranteed an even better check-in experience with a brand new reception area, which includes a more spacious Concierge counter and a wider Front Desk that will cater exclusively to individual travelers. Brand new communications and IT gadgets have been acquired to further ensure the smooth reception of guests as well. Other enhancements include newly-built ticket booth for conventions and concerts, Egyptian marble flooring, improvements to the ceiling’s three coves and the lobby’s balconies and staircases, and state-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment.”

Apart from improvements to the general structure of the lobby, clients can also look forward to the Lobby Lounge's all-new dining and lounging experience. Fully-equipped bar areas with wine dispensers have also been installed in the middle of each of the lounge’s two sections. To enhance the overall guest experience, the hotel’s Food and Beverage team, headed by its Director, Alastair Granger, has put together additional features such as nightly entertainment from the city’s top performers, soulful afternoon music by soloists, a selection of afternoon tea packages that is available for guests from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM daily, and an offering of fantastic gourmet desserts created by no less than its French Group Executive Pastry Chef, Daniel Lajoux. Diners now have the option to choose from a variety of flambé creations, which will be prepared by the lobby’s servers right in front of the guests.

When asked about Waterfront's future plans, Gatchalian answered “after this lobby we also have the group lobby renovation on going right now. The group lobby caters to tour groups, corporate groups who come here to the hotel. They will have their own pantry, their own lobby, and own elevator access-- all these for a better customer experience.” He also enthused about the convention center's projected completion by January 2013. Waterfront Cebu City has been known for big events and concerts. The last phase of the project is targeting the center's carpet, the lighting, and the lounges. This would pave way to better audience experience especially since the hotel is known to host international acts such as Bruno Mars, Tears for Fears, Michelle Branch, and Vertical Horizon.

Panagbenga - Baguio City's Annual Flower Festival

Every last weekend of February, locals and tourists alike fill the lengthy sidewalks of Session and Harrison Roads to immerse themselves in what DOT Secretary Ramon Jimenez calls the “360 degree spectacle” of Panagbenga Festival.

Panagbenga, Baguio City's annual flower festival, is a five-week long slew of activities that celebrate the season when flowers blossom. A Grand Opening Parade jump starts the festivities on the first day of the month. Exciting concerts, trade fairs, and pageants follow forth on the days after but it isn't until the last Saturday and Sunday of February when the festival highlight happens.

Weren't one of the million who were in Baguio last weekend? Here's what you've just missed:

Grand Street Festival Dance Parade

Ten participants from different schools, foundations, and delegations from the rest of the Cordilleran provinces wowed the crowd with their colorful costumes and choreography one after the other. Most, as expected, danced to the tune of the infectious Panagbenga Hymn: 'Tribute to the Cordilleras', but a lot of the groups were also seen giving a different take on this year's pop tunes.

Local Government of Kabayan, Benguet’s Adivay Festival dance bagged the 1st Place. Tabuk City’s Matagoan Festival ranked 2nd Place while the Baguio City National High School-Special Program in the Arts got the 3rd place.

Grand Flower Float Parade

A total of 25 giant flower gardens in motion have enthralled Panagbenga goers this year. Three belong to the Hall of Famers: City of Baguio, Baguio Country Club (Star Wars theme), and SM (Giant Water Dragon); the rest were done by different sponsors who were in competition.

M. Lhuillier's float, in which Miss Earth pageant titlists comfortably sat, was hailed 1st among all that participated. Second place was bagged by the Department of Tourism's sunny float, while Manila North Tollways Corporation’s float ranked third.

Tips and Tricks for Next Year's Panagbenga

If you missed this year's spectacle, don't worry, there's always next year. February 2013 is a long time from now but it won't hurt to know these helpful hints this early.

Arrive at least a day ahead. The parades do not happen until the last Saturday and Sunday of the month but it's better to be in Baguio proper a day before. This will eliminate the risk of not seeing the festivities because of traffic and road problems.

Expect traffic. Panagbenga attracts at least a million attendees so be prepared for a slow drive up the mountains and within the city. Take the public transportation on the way to the event venue as parking could be a problem.

Be at the venue as early as 5am. The parades usually start at 8 am, but good luck finding a nice view point if you target that time. The best views can be had at the right side of Session Road going down to the market. Next best is anywhere along the Melvin Jone's side of Harrison Road.

... or check-in at one of the hotels along Session Road. Hate being squeezed in a crowd? This is your best bet. Binoculars would be handy, if you choose to enjoy Panagbenga this way.

Bring water and snacks. A lot of convenience stores and fast food restaurants can be found along Session Road but you wouldn't want to leave your prized spot just because you suddenly got thirsty, right?

Dress comfortably. It's definitely chilly in the morning so a light jacket is a must. It gets sunny in the middle of the parade though. Bringing hats, shades, and fans are encouraged.

Bring extra batteries for your camera. Each minute is picture-worthy. Prepare to click away endlessly and make sure you've batteries to make your camera last until the end of parade.

Leave the rest of your valuables at the hotel. With over 2,000 enforcers and volunteers employed as crowd control, this year's Panagbenga proved to be a peaceful one. Although such is the case, it is always better to be cautious. Don't let thieves and missing gadgets spoil your festive mood.

Perhaps one of the few festivals in the Philippines that honor their major crop in the island is the famous Lanzones Festival of Camiguin.

What use to be the claim of Laguna’s Paete is now the main turf of the island of Camiguin. During the month of October, the whole island is flush with this yellow colored fruit, when it is in abundance and its taste is on its highest sweetness. Perhaps, it is due to the islands claim of being the world’s only island with seven active volcanoes to its claim including the most feared Mount Hibok-Hibok and Camiguin Volcano. And it is because of this that the soil is rich in minerals and is ideal for these kinds of fruit trees to bear such sweet tasting fruits. Aside from the sumptuous parade of fruits, the two-day grand festival features the best of the island’s cottage industry and several indigenous sporting events.

Next to the popular fruit festival is the annual Holy Thursday and Good Friday Festival. It is call “Panaad in Camiguin.” The most significant of these festivities is the yearly procession along the island’s 64-kilometer circumferential road. The holy week devotion culminates in Bonbon passing though what the natives call “the hundred steps of the history of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion.” The fourteenth station of the cross offers you glorious scenery of the bay lined by coconut trees.

If you miss the Holy Week, you can still catch up with the Bonbon Fiesta held every second week of May. The festivity features a fluvial parade, boat race and Santacruzan. Although measuring no more tha 230 hectares, Camiguin – a pear shape island 90 kilometers southeast of the bustling Cagayan de Oro industrial center in Mindanao – offers the most nature lovers can hope fore.

It’s seven volcanoes, often hidden in misty clouds enveloping most of the island – offers a challenge to the strong and adventurous. One can also relax in the natural spa and splendid waterfalls that abound in the island. Camiguin is probably one of the least explored island in the archipelago as one can stroll cozily and undisturbed in the quiet of its verdant natural beauty.

Beaches

If you are to stay for several days, it is best to reserve one morning for a trip to White Island and frolic under the sun in this white sand bar, two kilometers off Agoho or Yumbing, in the northern tip of the island. Myth has it that all the Camiguin beaches used to boast of this white powdery sand until the eruption of Camiguin Volcano. Besides sunbathing, it’s best to snorkel around White Island where multi-colored starfish can be found.

Besides the uninhabited White Island, a trip to Mantigue, three kilometers off Mahinog town in the eastern portion of Camiguin, should not be missed. The island boasts, not only of white sand beaches but some four-hectares of forested land.

Other beaches within Camiguin island include the Cabaua-an beach, which is nearest the island’s capital town of Mambajao. Cabua-an is the venue for the Hibok-Hibokan festival held every year on June 24. The festival features water sports in honor of St. John the Baptist. Another interesting beach is Agohay beach, which is seven kilometers from Agoho. This is the camping area for Hibok-Hibok mountaineers.

These days, volcanologists monitor the island’s molten soul and tell us in advance when an eruption will occur. The “Camiguin dragons” are presently sleeping quietly. It is hoped that they will stay that way.

To get to Camiguin, you can either go by plane or by ferry. The best way though, is to come by ferry, from the Cagayan de Oro. The three-hour trip enables a closer look at the scenery – busy docks and fishing boats that ply the Bohol Sea – and lets you meet Camiguin enthusiasts. These island regulars are drawn back each year by what they describe as the place’s “mystic beauty,” and by its people too, whose friendly nature is legendary even among their fellow Filipinos. Your landing at Benoni wharf confirms most of what you’ve heard on the ferry.

To travel around the island, you can hire a motorbike or a jeepney with a driver. The trip around the island can be done during the day, with plenty of time for stops along your destination. And stop you have to do, if only to exchange a few pleasantries with everyone who hails “hi friends!” as you pass by.

Camiguin has wondrous beauty. Some might say even mystic beauty. It is this, plus those clouds that ever shroud the island’s high volcanic peaks. That at last leaves one mindless to the havoc that these same volcanic peaks could wreak.

This must be for the Camiguinos too, for their happiness seems to be sublime. Their friendliness is totally sincere and their hospitality as genuine as you would ever hope to find. Little wonders that the ranks of the Camiguin enthusiasts are swelling all the time.

How to get there:

Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer daily flights to Cagayan De Oro. Then take a three-hour bus ride, or car rental to the north of Cagayan de Oro, about 80 kilometers to the port town of Balingoan. There is a ferry that runs an hourly trip from Balingoan to Benoni, the Port town of Camiguin.

Mother's Garden: A One Stop Shop For All Things Healthful

The directions printed on the small flyer I got read:

From City Hall, take Naguilian Road (Quirino Hi-way), cross Bokawkan (Buhagan), Ferguson and Escoda Roads. Just before the Baguio City Arc, turn right to Quezon Hill Road 2 (Pilar H. Lim) and travel uphill turning right to (M. Ponce St) landmark is waiting shed. Travel the winding road for 300 meters until Brgy. Quezon Hill Proper Outpost, then turn right to Quezon Hill 1st Road for 100 meters. Turn left and an immediate right landmark is an old waiting shed to Upper Fairview Road downhill for 50 meters. I wasn't even halfway through reading, when the tiny (and, well, lazy) voice inside of me told me to: “Give up! That place you're eying is far. Stay here in your breezy Manor suite for the rest of the day. Drown in your pillows-- in between the sheets of your fluffy comforters, and enjoy the feeling of idleness. You don't have these luxuries back home in oven-hot Manila.”
I looked around the room. Tiny voice is right. I don't have the leisure of doing nothing in such a comfortable place back in Manila. It's my first time to revisit Baguio after, what, two, three years? And I'm supposed to revel in Baguio's tranquil, not seek out far-flung restaurants with directions that's a paragraph long. How bad is it to spend the rest of the day doing nothing?

I was 90% convinced to stay-in and forgo the long trip to Mother's Garden (the restaurant from the flyer) when I made the wrong move: I gave the flyer a second and more thoughtful look. There it was, a tiny 1x1 ID photograph of a pig-- staring at me with those 'piglet-pig' eyes, begging me to visit her in the restaurant's “petting zoo”. “When will you ever have time to revisit Baguio? Next year? The year after next? You may never get to see me then. Please come,” the piglet said (in my crazy head, at least). (Note: Just so you know, I'm known to have a soft spot for all things cute and an even softer one for those who are both cute and alive. I'm slightly nuts when it comes to animals.) And that was it. A 1x1 picture of a sad-looking pink pig was all it took to convince me to ditch the comforts of my fabulous suite, and make that 30-minute travel all the way up to Quezon Hill. That and, of course, the chance to stumble upon another gem of a restaurant.

And a gem, I did find.

The flyer didn't say much about Mother's Garden-- only keywords like “nature”, “culture”, “art”, and “cuisine”, and the pictures only suggested a restaurant with an herb garden and a small petting zoo for kids. So I don't think the owner, Therese Jison, can blame me if the first thing I said upon seeing the whole complex (yes, the property deserves the term) was “Holy, this place is huge! And beautiful, too!” She's probably used to hearing all variations of “Wow!” so all she did when she welcomed me was give me a polite “Thank You” and her widest smile. The experience of stepping into Mother's Garden and meeting Therese was just like visiting a dear friend's jaw-dropping, beautiful house and meeting her uber-cool mom. I then asked Therese if I can look at the entire property before I order a meal. And just like what a cool tita would do, she volunteered to do the tour herself.

The Garden

Therese's garden is unlike any garden I've seen before. Not only is it the most spacious (it occupies most part of the 2,000 sq m. property) I've seen, the garden also came across as the most systematic one I've encountered.

Fresh herbs, medicinal plants, and vegetables are all placed accordingly in the multi-level garden that goes downslope. Every step down, Therese would turn back to me and introduce me to the plants. There were ones that I'm familiar with-- the common cooking herbs I love such as basil (pasta!) and kaffir (for Thai Tom Yum). There are also ones that I've heard of but I haven't seen personally, like medicinal Ashitava and sugar-substitute Stevia. And but of course, the strawberries are present, happy in their own patch. “I allow kids to pick their own strawberries,” Therese mentioned.

On and on she went. To say that I was amazed at all her knowledge about plants is an understatement. While going further downhill, I asked her if she's had formal education in horticulture. She laughed and said she took accounting back in college, then traveled to Europe and the United States for some culinary training. “So you just happen to know all of these!?” I exclaimed. She then told me about her tutorials under Dr. Balaoing, a professor of Agricuture from Benguet State University. “You know, as you grow older, you continually look for things you can nurture. That's probably why I made this garden. I think I only developed my green thumb back in 2009,” she added.

The Mini- Zoo

Our walk downhill wasn't all for the plants. Every here and there, were pig pens, goose ponds, goat lot, and chicken perches. “I take care of them as well,” Therese once more flashed a smile.

She introduced me to Michelle, the smartest mommy swine in the lot and the very reason I was in Mother's Garden in the first place. “I saw her in the picture! I didn't know she's that big!” the giddy little me enthused. “She's a show off,” Therese said before she instructed Michelle to perform her tricks. After seeing Michelle, I yearned for my own pet pig as well.

Guests are welcome to feed (with organic vegetables, as they are vegans) all the animals within the complex. “Kids love, love them!” Therese shared then tossed another carrot stick to the baby pigs. I think I met my future self that day.

Restaurant, Playground, and Crafts Shop

These last three components of the entire Mother's Garden complex are within the proximity of each other.

As a restaurant, Mother's Garden serve international fare, mostly using the organic vegetables and meat (except Michelle!), from its own backyard. I was only able to try Mother's Garden Salad (P178) and Tapas (P279) with a glass of wine (price varies) that afternoon as I have a scheduled dinner afterwards, but I was able to spy how surprisingly affordable everything is in their menu.

An order of Sicilian Chicken or a Beef Burger, for example, will only cost you P149, and an order of Fish and Chips is available at P199. Nothing exceeded P300! When I praised the affordability of her dishes, Therese simply said, “that's probably why couples love dating here, no?”

Tapas

On weekdays (and nights) Mother's Garden is a calm and romantic destination for dating couples. On weekends however “almost 70% of the customers are kids.” The sand covered playground with castle slides and friendly rabbits keep the kids busy at Mother's Garden. Activities such as freehand pottery and carving workshops are regularly held in the Crafts shop area as well. No wonder the kids love it in here!

Truly, there's something for everyone in this out of the way gem I discovered in Baguio City. Thanks to the the flyer with Michelle's picture, I discovered a newfound favorite place in the Summer Capital.

I'm also glad that I didn't give in to the little voice that discouraged me to take the long drive up Quezon Hill because, really, how often can you go to a place where you can pick your own salad, feed friendly farm animals, and learn horticulture all in one afternoon? Well, not as often as you can check-in a hotel with a fluffy comforter here in the metro, right?

Exploring Pampanga in One Day By The Culture ShockPh Group

A day trip to Pampanga is one that's hard to plan not because of its distance from Manila, nor the lack of places to go to. In fact, what makes planning a day trip to this neighboring province (only about 16 kilometers from the metro) stressful is the abundance of trip-worthy destinations scattered all over its three cities and nineteen municipalities. With a long list of restaurants, historical landmarks, heritage churches and shrines to choose from, how can one fit every point of interest in Pampanga in just one day?

A new tour group called CultureShockPH did the hard job of picking the best of Pampanga's culinary and cultural destinations and came up with their recently-launched Pampanga Food & Heritage Tour. The tour aims to squeeze the sights and tastes of country's culinary capital in one fun day trip.

What is CultureShockPH?

CultureShockPH is a newly-established group of five twenty-something creative professionals who share the same passion for discovering, traveling, and eating. They may be young but this fun bunch is no stranger to on-foot explorations. Members Osep Reyes and Guido Sarreal run a separate travel group: Trail Adventours, which bring hikers-- from newbies to professionals-- up the different peaks in the Philippines. On tour, they talk to participants and share their personal experiences and knowledge about the place. Bloggers Smarla Angtuanco and Robbie Bautista find thrill in discovering new places. Both contribute heavily in the culinary and research arm of CultureShock group. Paolo Carlos, who hails from Pampanga, helped picked the destinations for the Pampanga itinerary. He also takes care of the group's financial matters.

Brought together by their shared friends and interests, the group decided to put up CultureShock early this year to promote beautiful places in the Philippines and allow Filipinos, as well as foreigners, to have a first hand experience of the country's unique cuture.

Where will CultureShockPH Take You?

Unlike the other Pampanga tours available in the market, CultureShock's itinerary for this particular destination covers both culinary and heritage destinations, i.e., restaurants and churches that have long been regarded as institutions in the province. Apart from the group's factual inputs on the destinations listed in the itinerary, information from the local guides (parish priests, church keepers, and restaurant managers) are also imparted to the participants during the tour.

Have a Hearty Breakfast at Atching Lillian’s
Mexico, Pampanga

In an old but still evidently grandiose ancestral house in Mexico, Pampanga, awaits a cheerful lady fondly called Atching Lillian. Her humble demeanor and “beso-beso” ways of greeting strangers do not tell that she's one of the most important culinary figures Pampanga has produced. CultureShock appropriately puts breakfast with this noted culinary historian, award-winning chef, and cooking show host as the first item in the tour's itinerary.

At Atching Lilian's place, participants are to tour the kitchen in which she stores her antique cookware collections. A demonstration on how to make Pampanga's famous San Nicolas cookies will follow. Participants are encouraged to try molding and cutting the dough by themselves. A small token of appreciation will be given to those who've put extra effort.

Morcon

Once done with the demo, everyone is invited to partake in the authentic Kapampangan buffet that she prepared. Feast-all-you-can on Morcon, Dinuguan, Tamales, and other famous Pampango dishes for breakfast. While eating, Atching will entertain you with folklores on how the dishes were invented. You'd have to attend to know how her excellent Paksiw ng Demonyo got its name!

Check Out the 'Sistine Chapel of the Philippines' Betis Church
Guagua, Pampanga

After a hearty fare, the tour group will be taken to Betis Church (St. John the Apostle Church), known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Philippines.”

The well-maintained and imposing structure was built back in the 18th century by the Augustinians. Very few people outside Pampanga know that such a majestic church exists in the Philippines. Betis Church is that grandiose, and it is now rightfully protected as a National Cultural Treasure.

After your tour, prayers, and reflections, get your cameras ready for half an hour's worth of photography practice. The church is beautiful inside out, you'll never run out of interesting subjects when in here. Note though that flash photography is not allowed when inside the church.

Have an Exotic Lunch at Everybody’s Café
San Fernando, Pampanga

Lunch for the day is at Everybody's Cafe-- a “sosy turo-turo” style restaurant that's one of the longest standing restaurants in Pampanga. The display counter a few steps away from the entrance showcases different Kapampangan classics that are avaialable for the day. Most ordered are their bright orange, creamy, and succulent Morcon, and their Fried Hito with Buro, Wrapped in Mustasa Leaves.

The above-said dishes are excellent but above all else, foodies take the trip to Everybody's Cafe for their exotic specialties: Fried Camaru (cricket), Stuffed Betute (frog), and Tapang Kalabaw (carabao). A demo on how they stuff frogs and prepare the crickets await after your meal.

Cool Off at Razon’s
Guagua, Pampanga

Any foodie trip to Pampanga merits a visit to one of the oldest branches of Razon's-- a halo-halo store, famous for their ice's extra fine texture. It's quite hard to believe that the business most famous for their simple but memorable halo-halo started in such a small unassuming spot beside a gas station.

Enjoy the Peaceful Scenery at Sta. Rita de Cascia Parish
Santa Rita, Pampanga

After your Razon's halo-halo merienda, you'll be brought to the sleepy town of Santa Rita-- specifically, the baroque-style Sta Rita de Cascia Parish.

Expect to hear stories about the life of the town's patron saint, the parishioners' devotion and simplicity, and some interesting folklore that concerns a nun in an all-black hood, running around the town to save the people from a criminal from the parish priest. You may also want to say your prayers at the altar that houses a first-class relic of Sta. Rita de Cascia, the patron saint for lost and impossible causes.

Commemorate the Lahar Tragedy at San Guillermo Church
Bacolor, Pampanga

From the outside, the last church featured in the itinerary looks just like any other shrine. But San Guillermo Church in Bacolor, Pampanga is no ordinary one as it is half- submerged in lahar.

A slightly depressing part of the tour, the trip to San Guillermo Church is a good place to learn more about the calamity that killed thousands of Filipinos. The museum within the church has pictures and artifacts that depict how high and mighty the church was prior the calamity. You'll also be told stories on how hard life was for every one in Bacolor until the lahar flows finally stopped just around a decade ago. The mass grave located behind the church will most probably give you a lump in your throat.

End The Tour with a Light Note in Historic Camalig Restaurant
Angeles City, Pampanga

And because it is impossible not be a little depressed after a visit to San Guillermo Church, the CultureShock group chose the Historic Camalig Restaurant as its last destination to liven up the mood before the trip ends.

Here, you'll be treated to a dinner consisting of Armando's Best Pizza-- “Ang Pambansang Pizza” and Doy's Kapampangan Pizza in which longganisa and salted egg are stars. But prior to eating, there'll also be a demonstration on how to make their talked-about pizzas.

As of this writing, CultureShockPH already has two successful runs of the Pampanga tour under its belt. On June 30, they'll be conquering Taal, Batangas with their first batch of participants. The 3rd Pampanga Tour is set on July 7. As soon as the other itineraries are set, they'll be adding more local destinations to their list. Their 'Fiesta Tour', in which they'll bring the group to the town and make them help the locals a day or two prior the festival, is also something you can look forward to.

Experience Batad - Banaue, Ifugao

Ever wonder how it feels like to wake up every morning and feel like in a coffee commercial?

A long weekend in Batad is definitely not your usual escape from the daily grind. I have been eyeing Batad for some time now, itching to finally check this on my list of places to go to up north. A legit photo beside the famous amphitheater of rice fields is a must to the typical tourist. And people come, hike for a good one hour from saddle camp to the main view deck, take pictures, but leave the next day.

Batad was my home for three days. And waking up to beautiful mornings stuck to me - a cup of mountain tea on one hand, and a trusty camera to capture the vastness of layers and layers of rice fields on the other. I try my best to get up early to witness the sunrise - the sun gradually peeks from the mountain range and slowly illuminates the rest of Batad. The combination of cold morning breeze and heat from the cup is just soothing. The small town of Batad makes you want to linger, go back to basics and spend a few days of quiet.

Dubbed as the "8th Wonder of the World" is the Banaue Rice Terraces which is the most well known of Ifugao's terraces. But, personally, Batad's Rice Terraces should be aptly claimed as the 9th. The rice terraces of Batad are better preserved compared with its famous counterpart. The province of Batad can be reached through a 12-kilometer jeep ride (P50) from Banaue - highly recommend to request for a topload ride. For the adventurous, the Ifugao terrain offers good mountain trails. Upon arrival to the saddle camp, you will immediately see mostly foreigners, gathering and preparing their cameras and tripods for the hike. The saddle camp offers walking sticks (P10), buko (P50) and the usual trail food. Locals will approach you and will ask if you need a tour guide to the area. Luckily, I was with mountaineer friends who can read trails and are equipped with cook sets, so we were able to save a couple of hundreds. Tour guides usually ask around P800 to tour you around Batad.

From the saddle camp to the main view deck, one has to rough up for an hour or two. The hike only requires you to walk a few kilometers, with pit-stops, where you can buy cold drinks and buy souvenirs. Locals will greet you in English (mind you), and offer you their famous wooden carvings of Rice God called Bulol. I bought a small version that was made into a necklace for only P50, to add to my growing number of keepsakes.

To complete the experience, we decided to ditch the typical inns, and stayed over at an authentic Ifugao hut. Mang Ramon, known as a former tour guide around Batad, now owns Ramon's Homestay, offering 5 Ifugao huts located further down the crowded inns uphill. One is even a century-old hut owned by his ancestors. Mang Ramon charges guests per head at P250. A typical hut can comfortably accommodate 4 to 5 guests.

Mang Ramon warmly greeted and introduced us to the other guests as family and makes sure guests are well acquainted. He offered complimentary mountain tea (regularly priced at P45 per cup) and started telling us stories about the ancestral huts and even offered free bonfire later that night. I could not help but think that the huts were really made for hibernation and rest after a nesting for a few days in our humble abode.

Nestled at the heart of Batad is the famous Tappiya Waterfalls, 30 minutes from Batad Village. A hike to the falls would mean you have to get your feet dirty and experience the terraces upclose. Although, a little balancing is required, once you get pass the rice fields, the view from the stops will leave you at awe. The waterfalls reminded me of the opening sequence of Jurassic Park, the enormous waterfall scene with big splashes of water at the end. The rock formation at the foot of the falls form small jacuzzi-like pools, perfect for a dip after the rigorous trail. Fortunately, and unfortunately, the micro-climate of Batad did not cooperate, and so, we have to hike back to the village bearing the rain. What at first may look like an unfortunate event, turned into a challenge. My friends and I had a grand time taking on the slippery rocks and making it back to the village before dawn.

When visiting a province, as they always say, never fail to bring home pasalubong - as it speaks volumes about its place of origin. Batad offers just that. It prides itself with their harvested rice - all organic, with the choice of red and white. Known as the rice capital of the Philippines, they offer quality and affordable pasalubong-worthy treats. Mang Ramon even let us experience the process of pagbabayo to complete the whole Ifugao experience. They charge P120/kilo for both types of rice.

A place to reconnect and be once again, one with nature, Batad will surely fill your senses with its authenticity that's truly Filipino. A look outside the window and I'm always reminded of Batad mornings - a cup on one hand and a camera on the other. Because how else do you want to spend every waking morning but in a place called Batad.

How to get to Batad:

By car: Take North Luzon Expressway and exit through Sta.Rita to Banaue, Ifugao. It will take you approximately 8-9 hours to get to Banaue. From Banaue, ride a jeepney to Saddle Point and from Saddle, take a one to two hour trek to Batad.

By bus: Take the Victory Liner bus in Kamuning, Quezon City bound for Banaue or go to Autobus terminal (between University of Sto. Thomas and McDo on Espana) or Florida bus station (corner of Espana and Lacson). From Banaue, ride a jeepney to Saddle Point and from Saddle, take a one to two hour trek to Batad.
