I started writing some small articles on each state’s unclaimed property division, and just how much in unclaimed funds they are holding. I have found this to be a very difficult and tedious task, as some states simply neglect their unclaimed property division and the website for the division. You can find these small articles at the About Your State page

I recently sent out an e-mail to every state’s unclaimed property division in the U.S. requesting information on their unclaimed property division. The e-mail requested information on how much in unclaimed funds they were currently holding, how many unclaimed property accounts they currently had. It also requested how much money and property was turned over annually to the state, and how much money was returned to rightful owners and heirs each year.

I was surprised when I only received about 15 e-mails back with the information I had requested. At this point I knew I would be reading through miles of each states annual financial reports and publications. Some states make the information fairly easy to find. This information is usually in their annual financial reports, publications, or press releases.

However, some U.S. states are clearly neglecting to update the unclaimed property division section of their website. For instance one website stated on the home page they were holding 1 billion in unclaimed property. After digging a little deeper into the annual report I found they were actually holding 2.2 billion in unclaimed property. They were just a little bit off on that one. Yes, I am being sarcastic.

I have even called some states in an attempt to get the total of unclaimed funds currently being held when I couldn’t find the information on their website. I couldn’t believe it when some of the workers interrogated me on the phone, asking what I needed this information for. Isn’t there something called the freedom of information act. Beside that, this is public information that really doesn’t need any kind of written request to obtain. There was no reason for this kind of behavior from the government employees.

There are only a few states I am having real problems obtaining this information from. I gotta to tell you though. The main reason I started this project of getting all the totals in unclaimed funds for each state is simply to inform the public. There is a huge lack of factual information on the internet about unclaimed property and just how much they are holding in unclaimed funds. For example one self proclaimed money expert’s numbers were way off. I won’t name any names but he loves the phrase “tens of millions”, when in fact most states are holding in the hundreds of millions and some even in the billions. In this individuals attempt to get you jacked up about signing up for his website he left out too many facts.

Find out what you are entitled to claim and just how much each state is actually holding in unclaimed funds at the About Your State page. Start your free unclaimed property search today.

I am amazed at how many articles there are on lost money. Many of the articles out there on blogs and in online magazines severly lack the facts about lost money. Here is the bottom line. Just about all intangible property and some tangible property excluding real estate, vehicles, boats, etc are held by each state’s respective unclaimed property division. I say unclaimed property division because that is the term most states use. However, some state’s unclaimed property are held with the state treasurer, comptroller, or state lands department. Whatever the case, the property is all treated the same under the unclaimed property statutes.

Before I go any further let’s discuss intangible and tangible property. Intangible property are things like bank accounts, investment stocks, unclaimed death benefits, and lost inheritances just to name a few. Those happen to be the larger dollar amount types that typically go unclaimed. Intangible property will stay with the unclaimed property division indefinitely until it is claimed. The right to claim this property is never lost by owners, beneficiaries, or heirs. However, the state of Idaho, at the time of writing this article stated they would take permanent ownership after a peroid of 10 years of property remaining unclaimed. This is pretty rare, and I don’t know how much longer this will be in affect for the state of Idaho. There may be another one or two states with this rediculous law. I really don’t think it’s fair to play finders keepers with the general publics lost money.

The majority of tangible property is not held by the state. However, there are some exceptions. The most common tangible property held by the state is the contents of a safe deposit box. Usually valuable stuff in those, including family heirlooms, savings bonds, jewelery, valuable baseball cards, and whatever else people manage to fit in them. The main concern on safe deposit boxes is that the state does not always have room for the contents of them. Often times states will conduct an auction of the contents. The state then opens an account in the owner and or beneficiary’s name and the proceeds from the auction are then put in that account. That account will stay with the unclaimed property division indefinitely until it is claimed by the owner, beneficiaries, or heirs. The right to claim this account is never lost.

It’s predicted that at least 1 in every 8 Americans are the rightful owners, heirs, or beneficiaries to some kind of unclaimed property. There are many predictions as high as 1 in every 4 Americans in some states having unclaimed property. Whatever the case, that is a huge chunk of the population. There are literally thousands of ways property can become unclaimed. Visit our articles page to find out more. We have articles on lost inheritances, Unclaimed death benefits, and unclaimed stock just to name a few. I think you will find the articles very exciting. They explain reasons why you probably have lost money and don’t even know it. I am sure by the time you are done reading a few articles you will want to began a search for yourself, family members, and friends. The best part about searching for lost money is that it’s completely free. Start your lost money search today!

Louisiana’s Unclaimed Property Division is currently holding more than $365 million in unclaimed money.

Louisiana’s Unclaimed Property Division collected a record $52 million in unclaimed property this fiscal year of 2009. This is the largest amount of unclaimed money collected in a single year in the program’s 35-year history, beating their previous record by more than $3.5 million.

In addition to collecting a record amount of unclaimed property, the Division returned an all-time record of more than $21 million in refunds to more than 17,000 people. This is the largest amount of money ever refunded in one year to Louisiana residents, beating their previous record by more than $170,000.

Unclaimed property is missing money that becomes abandoned after a certain period of time. It includes items such as payroll checks, checking and savings accounts, royalties, utility deposits, interest, dividends, stock certificates and life insurance proceeds. No matter how long it’s been since the unclaimed property was abandoned, Louisiana residents can come forward at any time and claim it.

Since the unclaimed property program began in 1972, the state has collected roughly $537 million in unclaimed money and returned approximately $175 million to the public. Approximately 75 percent of total collections ($400 million) and 84 percent of total refunds ($147 million) have occurred just in the past 12 years.

Even though the state of Louisiana has processed thousands of unclaimed property refunds worth millions of dollars, $365 million still needs to be claimed by Louisiana residents. The more word spreads about the program, the more money is turned over to the state as businesses learn about their responsibility to report unclaimed money to the state.

If you’ve never checked for unclaimed property in Louisiana’s database before, now is the time to do so. They update their unclaimed property database every day, so be sure to check for your friends and neighbors as well. Louisiana residents can search for unclaimed money online at www.latreasury.com or by calling 1-888-925-4127 weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
