Bite Off More Gum than you can Chew

Today’s gift idea is inspired by terrorist paranoia, but perhaps we can capitalize on the sentiment and make our days a little brighter in the face of weird people. Hamas, the Palestinian group currently in charge of the Gaza Strip, has accused the Israel Defense Forces of corrupting their youth by distributing libido-enhancing chewing gum throughout the territory.

No picture of the gum has been found, and as Israel and Hamas currently have no diplomatic relations in addition to the fact that the claim is not something that security forces are trained to respond to, the IDF declined to comment in the case. This is regrettable, as it could have made for some good material. However, one unnamed military source was quoted as saying the claims were, and we quote, “absurd.” Unable to hold his tongue on the issue, this seems to be another huge setback for the Mideast peace process.

This grim diplomatic incident inspired us to find real, actual libidinal chewing gum. We found it here.

Being in the unfortunate position of becoming seriously injured in an accident or incapacitated by a heart seizure or other medical emergency can wind up as becoming fatal if a person happens to be allergic to some form of medication or life saving emergency treatment. Smash-Me Bernie Doll in Honor of Madoff’s Move to Prison

In commemoration of the investing equivalent of a black hole that was Bernie Madoff and his recent ceremonial transfer to a medium security prison in Atlanta, we are coming out with a fun, memorial gift idea to the thief of the millennium.

Modelworks, a Phoenix toy company, has decided to capitalize on the general ill-will of pretty much the entire planet against Bernie, and has come out with a “Smash-Me Bernie” doll, complete with hammer for actual smashing. The genius of the toy is threefold:

1) At $99.95, all Modelworks has to do is sell half a billion of these babies to gross the sum that Madoff vacuumed out of the economy. Go Modelworks! Maybe we’ll start a counter.

2) As the purpose of the toy is to be smashed beyond recognition or repair, the end result of the stress releaser is that the consumer is left without the toy, forcing him to buy a new one, thereby increasing sales.

3) Bernie’s wearing a devil’s suit.

How about some more poetic justice: The prison facility where Madoff will begin his lucrative career as a prisoner, working in the laundry room at a few cents an hour and probably not handling the finances or investments of his fellow inmates (”I’d like to buy 200 shares of Dirty Prison Towels Inc., Bernie. Get it on margin for me, will ya?”) is the same prison where, a century earlier in 1910, Charles Ponzi himself happened to be incarcerated as well. Maybe they’ll even share the same room. Maybe there is a smidgeon of order in chaos.

To our detriment, Madoff, 71, is scheduled to be released in 2159. Though I wouldn’t worry. I figure, by that time, we will have paid off his $50 billion debt to society from the proceeds he will have procured as a prison laundry room worker. Until then, we’ll be smashing your likeness with a hammer at a hundred bucks a pop.

Cool Off In Summer with Crisp Summer Wines

It’s mid July and you’ve been invited over to some friends, who just moved, to spend the evening lounging around their pool or in their back yard or patio. You have to bring along something, for the occasion, but what? Candy of chocolates will melt, and flowers will wilt – but how about a bottle or two of crisp white or rose summer wine?

There’s nothing more refreshing than a glass of cold summer wine to go along with salads and other light summer meals, and even barbecue for that matter. These wines are generally not expensive either, and can be had in organic versions as well as the regular types – sulfides and all.

To make this often perplexing decision easier for you (especially if you happen to be more of a “Bud Light” drinker) here are some wine varieties that are both easy on palate as well as on the pocketbook:

Chardonnay (also known as inot Chardonnay, if bottled as a mixed variety): This pleasant semi-dry white wine is one of the most popular and goes well with cheese, pasta, chicken and fish – especially sea food. A good Chardonnay wine is available in both domestic and foreign varieties (including South American, Australian, etc.) and costs anywhere from $10 on up. Serve chilled (around 40 degrees F).

Chenin Blanc: An excellent dry white that is derived from the Chenin grape region on France, but is also available in both domestic and budget priced imported varieties. It has a neutral taste that is often augmented with essences of seasonal fruit such as apples and quince. Like Chardonnay, serve chilled.

Bodegas Rioja Rosado 2007: This reasonable priced Rose wine comes from Spain, but similar varieties also come from Portugal and Italy as well as California. Rose wines are a good “compromise” wine for people who can’t decide between a red or white wine; yet want something cool and crisp. This Rose wine has a hint of summer fruits, such as peaches, and has a slight acidity. Price is around $15, which is not bad for an import.

As long as we are on the subject of Rose wines, consider the ones from Portugal, particularly those by the winery Mateus. Mateus Rose and white wines have been around for years, and are still perennial favorites. Like other summer wines, serve chilled.

There are many other, of course, including a number of good Sangria types, which is red wine, blended with various types of citrus fruit. It also goes down easy on hot summer evenings, especially with fruit dishes.

These wines will surely be a hit with whomever you give them to; and don’t forget to buy a bottle or two for yourself!

Beating Summer Blues with a Midsummer Nights Dream Gift Basket

Summer is well underway, and so are those hot summer nights when people often think of romance and romantic interludes. Perhaps this is what inspired Will Shakespeare to write his immortal Mid Summer Night’s Dream romantic comedy, more than 400 years ago. And versions of his play are still seen on stage in theaters all over North America and the UK, especially during the summer months.

So what to buy that special damsel (or beau) in your life? There are a lot of special gifts that coincide with romance, and include perfume, flowers, jewelry, chocolates (make sure they’re shared in an air conditioned venue), and even ornate copies of Shakespeare’s play itself, in a DVD movie version. DVD movies of the play run around $25-35, and a duplicated copy of the play itself, written originally in 1595, and in the original Elizabethan English of the times (complete with illustrations of fairies and other fantasy creatures) can be had at around $30.

Shipping and delivery charges must be added if you don’t do this yourself (more romantic if you do, of course). So, enjoy the occasion with your dear one; and if your gift intention doesn’t work the way you wanted it to, be mindful of the Bard’s lines in Act I, Scene I: “The course of true love never did run smooth”.

Michael Jackson’s Fashion Influence

The King of Pop may have passed away but his influence on the pop fashion world may become even more pronounced in death than it was during his lifetime. Not only was his music and dance routines simply mind blowing, but so was his taste in clothing; especially the custom designed “uniforms” he began to wear later in his career. As his memory becomes legendary, as did that of Elvis Presley, so will the fashions he chose to wear, including the large Panama hats, white gloves and socks that he often wore as accessory items.

From the time he was the lead singer with his family group, The Jackson Five, and then onward to his first solo appearances which led to Moonwalker and his movie and best selling album Thriller, Jackson’s fashion metamorphosis indicated that he began to take his role seriously as King of Pop. The 19th Century military style outfits with gold braid, sequin lace, and gold buttons, tight pants and love for zippers often gave him an appearance of someone off to a costume party – except that his “party” was an almost daily affair.

Jackson loved all kinds of accessories, and this included the numerous umbrellas he carried or had attendants hold over him later in life, especially due to his skin disease that caused him to have a ghostly white appearance. As his personal appearance kept changing (a result of numerous plastic surgeries, particularly following a traumatic fire at a concert which caused him to lose part of his nose, and gave him severe burns) his clothing style changed as well.

His personal style was also reflected in the bizarre outfits he had made for his children, who he had dressed in order for their not to be recognized when going with him on occasional trips abroad.

Later on, during his courtroom appearances for child molestation, he wore impeccably tailored suits, often pure white with gold buttons and brightly colored vests. During this time he never wore the same outfit twice, and had personal tailors constantly designing new outfits for him to wear. Even with his last outfits, especially the one he wore when he announced his intention to do a series of 50 concerts on what he called his “This is it Tour“, he continued to express his unique individuality – even in mid-life.

One thing for sure: Michael Jackson never followed current fashion trends – he created his own. This what he will be remembered for, and will be imitated by thousands of Michael Jackson wannabes; who will try to duplicate his unique fashion style. And this may wind up being as much his legacy as his music – if not more.

Sacha Cohen’s Bruno Film Sparks New Fashion Trends

Sacha Baron Cohen, the British comedian and star of the Borat Tours America film, has pulled out all the stops in his latest bit of madness, Bruno, which deals with a gay Austrian fashion designer who goes on a bizarre tour of American gay fashion centers. The film has created such a stir, that it may actually do a lot to promote a new line of “duds for Gay dudes”, especially after Cohen’s recent interview with reporters at England’s version of Marie Claire fashion magazine where he posed along with model Alessandra Ambrosio.

Cohen was quoted as making some very “interesting” remarks about a number of well known “celebs”; including Madonna about whom he said: “L is for “Little black child… thanks to Madonna… its zis season’s vardrobe essential.”

Following his previous movie Borat, where he portrayed a reporter from the former Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan, his Bruno film features a “fashion tour’ all over gay (and not-so-gay) America and the film’s July 10 Hollywood Premiere promises to “turn the city on its pink a—”. A small “taste of things to come” was demonstrated by Cohen himself at the annual MTV Music Awards presentation, when Cohen, dressed as a bare-bottomed swan, descended into the audience right into the face of noted rap singer Eminem, who was so disgusted and outraged that he left the event.

Masquerading as the gay Austrian reporter, and using heavy Austrian dialect in his colorful speech, “Bruno’s” own colorful outfits, including some that leave nothing to the imagination, have been modeled by the actor himself in various international venues where he has been personally promoting his latest venture into madness.

Fashion Tips That Are Always In Style

Why have numerous Hollywood celebrities managed to remain stylish, despite getting older and despite changing fashion styles. They know the secrets in always being in style, and I want to share these secrets with you

Some of these personalities, such as Carey Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Madonna, and Tom Cruise, have managed to remain in the fashion forefront due to their knowledge of what is known as “personal style” meaning that the celebrity’s own individual characteristics maintain his or hers’ personal style, no matter what year (or generation) it is.

Here’s some of these style tips to take note of:

1. For women (maybe men too!) – keeping as near a perfect figure as possible; lets face it girls, men are men, and as such they like to see a pretty woman with the right proportions, which has always been bust 35-36, waist;22-24, and hips 35-36. Known as the “hour-glass figure” this is what men like to see, and why they buy magazines like Playboy or surf the internet.

2. Perfection is not always the best quality. Every button and ribbon do not have to be in place if other qualities are there. This is more true for women; and it always seems to work out that the more a women tries to look “perfect” the less she will be – so why do so. After all, we’re only human!

3. The “Freudian slip” (otherwise known as the simple black dress). This has always worked for many stars, especially ones like Audrey Hepburn, who had a natural sophistication that made her look tantalizingly sexy in a simple black dress.

4. Jeans: Jeans or other clothing made out of denim are always stylish, depending on how they are worn. Earlier American male movie stars like Clark Gable, James Dean, and more modern ones like Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, always look super in a pair of Levis (or similar). And this goes for gals like Madonna and Meg Ryan too!

5. Shades (sunglasses): Whether it is Audrey Hepburn at Tiffany’s, or Sarah Jessica Parker at a chic Manhattan café, the right pair of shades is an excellent complement to any woman (or man’s) wardrobe. Men should wear those types that are more masculine, however – like surfers or bikers would wear.

6. Be simple and more creative – and smile! Being able to change one’s appearance to suit the time (whether it be the year or the hour) is very important. Stars like Madonna and Meryl Streep have been able to master this technique and befit from it – including different hair styles, etc. And last of all, smile! That “technique” seems to work better no matter what!
