Recycled Cooking Oil has been making news around the globe as businesses add recycling used cooking oil to their “green” efforts. Used cooking oil is being converted into biodiesel which is then being used to fuel commercial vehicles. Biodiesel is less polluting than regular diesel.

About a dozen airlines have tested biodiesel aviation fuels in the last year – though none have operated in or out of San Jose with such a test flight.

MyUsedCookingOil helps restaurants, schools, hospitals and businesses in San Francisco CA establish recycling programs for their used cooking oil. This service is FREE.

Restaurants and other venues with commercial cooking facilities can contact My Used Cooking Oil to establish a FREE recycling program for used cooking oil and kitchen grease – anywhere within the 9-county San Francisco Bay Area. If you own a business and would like help in establishing a recycling program for your used cooking oil – give us a call:

(888) 376-9909

The aviation industry along with the support of national and local governments continue to provide financial support for research and development into recycling used cooking oil into biodiesel that can then be used as an energy source in industry.

Boeing’s first 787 Dreamliner flew from Boeing’s Delivery Center in Everett, Washington to Tokyo Haneda Airport on Tuesday powered by biodiesel which was created, in part, from recycled cooking oil used to cook french fries.
It’s estimated that the use of part recycled cooking oil reduced greenhouse gas emissions on the flight by 10 percent.

Qantas Airlines recently used biodiesel on two flights – one from Sydney to Adelaide and back, and the other Melbourne to Hobart and return.

In communities like San Francisco, it is very important to recycle used cooking oil properly as it pollutes water resources by spreading thinly over the water and preventing oxygenation, which harms marine life and the ecosystem.

San Francisco supports efforts to recycle used cooking oil and grease from local restaurants, hotels and other commercial food preparation establishments. The grease congeals and clogs sewer pipes, costing the city an extra $3.5 million a year to clean the gunk out, according to PUC estimates.

It’s a huge effort and part of it will be recycling the tons of used cooking used to deep-fry french fries and fish. McDonalds is the official restaurant of the 2012 Olympic Games.

Used cooking oil from the McDonald’s Olympic venue restaurants will be converted into biodiesel to fuel the company’s delivery trucks. Since May 2010, McDonald’s UK has recycled its used cooking oil into biodiesel. This effort provides a carbon savings of around 6,000 tons per year, and is the equivalent of 2,400 cars removed from the road every single year.

We can provide FREE pick up and recycling for used cooking oil from all fast food restaurants in the 9-county Bay Area. Give us a call to schedule pick up.

Recycling Used Cooking Oil from restaurants, hospitals and schools can save cities millions of dollars

We’ve written about it before – pouring used cooking oil and grease down the drain is one of the major contributing factors to wear and tear on city sewer lines. Cities the size of Berkeley & Oakland CA are saving millions of dollars in sewer maintenance as more and more restaurants, schools, hospitals and other commercial businesses institute recycling programs for used cooking oil.

A recent article in the Atlanta Constitution sheds light on just how expensive the cost of pouring used cooking oil down the drain can be:

There are a billion reasons DeKalb apartment complexes should recycle cooking oil and other grease, according to County Commissioner Stan Watson.

Watson is thinking of the $1.35 billion DeKalb is spending to overhaul its water and sewer system to meet a federal mandate to stop sewer spills, 73 percent of which the county says are caused by grease, fat and oil building up in the sewer lines.

More and more business that use cooking oil are recycling used cooking oil to keep it out of sewers and landfills.

Frozen food giant Birds Eye reduced its landlfill waste 21% last year by composting waste vegetables. This year, Birds Eye plans to reduce its contribution to landfills by 20 – 30 percent by recycling used cooking oil used in its food processing operations.

MyUsedCookingOil can help you establish a recycling program for your used cooking oil. We service Berkeley & Oakland CA and the entire 9-county Bay Area.

As oil prices continue disrupting our economy, renewable fuel is back. “Diesel’s engines and clean burning, renewable biodiesel are at work right now all over the country,” said Gary Haer, National Biodiesel Board Chairman. “Biodiesel supports American jobs and energy security. Biodiesel’s success reflects the bigger picture reality: strong energy policy can work to stimulate clean, American-made energy.” The U.S. biodiesel industry produced more than 1 billion gallons of fuel in 2011.

Restaurants, schools & hospitals in Monterey & Pacific Grove CA that set up free recycling programs with us for used cooking oil, are helping to make Rudolph Diesel’s words a reality.

Recycle Used Cooking Oil – San Francisco CA

Theft of used cooking oil is on the rise in California. The rising price of oil and gasoline make biofuels more cost competitive with fossil fuels. Like thieves who ransack foreclosed homes for copper wire, higher prices for used cooking oil can attract unsavory people.

Used cooking oil is in demand by biodiesel manufacturers. Biodiesel is gaining in popularity as a transportation fuel. The largest consumers are fleet operators, including municipal buses and courier firms like FedEx.

The National Biodiesel Board says U.S. biodiesel production tripled for several years in the early 2000s, and capacity is now well above 1 billion gallons annually.

All of this not-quite-black gold means security has become an issue for restaurant owners. The irony: Despite now having to pay more to secure their trash, restaurant owners don’t get paid for the old oil, receiving rebates off future oil purchases or waste removal instead.

“Our membership wants to recycle, they want to compost,” .said Chris Moyer, senior program manager for environmental initiatives at the National Restaurant Association “One of our industry imperatives is (environmental) sustainability.”

, says his firm works with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission to find markets for biofuels refined from used oils picked up in the city’s “SF Greasecycle” waste fats and oils collection program.

Recycling used cooking oil is an easy way to be a good neighbor, says Wesley Caddell, co-owner of San Francisco-based biodiesel distributor People’s Fuel Cooperative, since pouring oil and grease down the city’s drains costs taxpayers $3.5 million annually to unclog and repair.

Disposal of used cooking oil is part of the restaurant of the restaurant business these days.

Establishing Recycling Programs for Used Cooking Oil

MyUsedCookingOil is helping restaurants in East Bay communities like Danville, San Ramon and Walnut Creek establish recycling programs for their used cooking oil. Restaurants in the East Bay produce thousands of gallons of used cooking oil each month. Used cooking oil can no longer be sent to the landfill or poured down the drain. Used cooking oil is bad for the environment – a teaspoon can pollute a ton of water.

MyUsedCookingOil collects used cooking oil from restaurants, hospitals, schools and other commercial operations for FREE. A recycling program for restaurants in Walnut Creek, San Ramon and Danville is one simple step that can be taken to help go green.

Recycled cooking oil is converted into biodiesel. The chief executive of the National Biodiesel Board says that boosting the federally mandated minimum volume of biodiesel to 1.28 billion gallons in 2013 is the single biggest challenge facing their industry.

When fossil fuels are pumped from the ground and converted into energy they release additional carbon into the atmosphere that was previously trapped in the ground and not a part of the natural environment. FOG (fats oils and grease) that are used in the production of biodiesel are already a natural part of the ecosystem and the carbon cycle.
