Accept the truth: You are not perfect, you can't make your spouse perfect, and you are not in perfect control of what happens in the world or in your marriage.

· Do not refuse to accept your human limitations. This will help you stop struggling for perfection and obsessing over small “mistakes,” rather than enjoying the positive aspects of your marriage.

· Stop! While Belu Maheshwari says; (from his article “Are you guilty of being ambitious?”) “Ambitious is ardent desire for distinction and aspiration.

It pertains to personal growth and achievement. Base on the above definitions, there is nothing negative in its essence. The world progresses and grows because of this desire.

I was once too ambitious, I was eager to get ahead, and I was willing to do anything to move up the ladder. I wanted to be the go-getter who can really go and get.

On my own side of the story, my ambitions leaded me to rise faster; “got my own house, enjoyed my own business, bought things that really took my breath away! Traveled to some places for vacation and went to several famous restaurants and hotels in the country”. But by being too ambitious as well, I became unreasonably aggressive, which directed me to fall as much faster. I just woke up one day; trying to pick up the pieces…bit by bit…I almost lost everything I’ve worked hard for!

Would you agree that suddenly, I realized that it’s not all about being ambitious? It’s all about my line of attack towards my ambitions. I faced my ambitions with extreme aggressiveness. I’ve always thought that being so aggressive is the only key to reach my ambitions easily…immediately…

I find my self always in a hurry to get what I want. Result was I forgot other essentials in my life! I was focused on the superficialities that I thought can make me feel happy and complete for the rest of my life.

Now, I have learned to tame down a bit, not to worry too much for tomorrow, be happy and be contented with whatever I have now. Life has more to offer. Relax! Enjoy life to the fullest!

Catastrophic Encounters!

2007 was the year I have been trying to forget but couldn’t. At that exact moment, I felt that the whole world seemed to walk out on me. That was the time when the only color left for my eyes to see was Black! Everything seemed to be so dark and empty…I felt so lost in a once very familiar place.

Back then I ceased to notice the difference between day and night. How it was to wake in the morning, neither sleeps in the evening. I was walking and walking out of no where. My self, my beliefs, my life…Everything was gone… dreams were shattered…obscured… Days have passed I couldn’t help but felt the pain of losing it! The business I called my own was ruined penniless, bankrupt….

Having my own business has been my ultimate dream. I forecasted myself being my own boss, having fun doing things I like to do, having more freedom with family and recreations, keeping myself busy and helping others. Being an employee was never part of my long term career plan. Employment for me then was just temporary. That has been my mindset ever since.

Of course I was never lethargic; spend most of my waking hours working, ensuring business is running smoothly. Along with my energy of being a hands-on entrepreneur were my relevant experiences and exposures in facing day-to-day challenges in the business world. What seemed to be lacking here? Why I was failure?

Looking back from this experience, I begin to know my self deeper and deeper, probing my strength and weaknesses in particular. It thought me to understand that everything happens for a reason. There are no accidents, nor chances, nor coincidence. God’s purpose took into account human errors and even sin. God never does anything accidentally and HE never makes mistakes, HE has a reason for everything he creates. I can say that it wasn’t God’s perfect time for me to do my own business, not yet in according to His plan for me.

Now I learned to accept that I shouldn’t forget this past nor regret any decisions I made from this experience, for it is a big part of who I am today! This was the pain and struggles that God let me live through to help me in shaping up my personality. “For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him”, Colossians 1:16

The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader

John C.

“If you can become the leader you ought to be on the inside, you will be able to become the person you want on the outside. People will want to follow you. And when that happens, you’ll be able to tackle anything in this world”.

The traits of a leader provided by Maxwell in this book are alphabetized. And to briefly describe the book, the following are to be found within its covers:

Why do some people consistently inspire others to follow their lead? According to John C. Maxwell, it's the "character qualities" they possess. In The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader, Maxwell identifies these top traits as character, charisma, commitment, communication, competence, courage, discernment, focus, generosity, initiative, listening, passion, positive attitude, problem-solving, relationships, responsibility, security, self-discipline, servant hood, teachability, and vision--and then defines them in ways that readers can absorb and utilize. Each is covered in a separate chapter opening with a high-concept definition and continuing with relevant anecdotes, details on its meaning, suggestions for further reflection, and exercises for improvement. For example, in the section on vision ("You can seize only what you can see"), Maxwell describes how Walt Disney initially developed the theme-park concept after accompanying his daughters to a fun-filled but rather shabby amusement park. He then analyzes how Disney's resultant projects drew on his personal history while meeting other's needs, and explains how readers must "listen to several voices" to develop successful foresight in a similar way. Finally, Maxwell suggests methods to articulate these visions and measure their implementation.

I considered this book as one useful tool for me not only as a manager but as a person who wanted to improve myself. Though this is not an overnight solution or tip but provides insights on how I can possibly develop characteristics and made me assess if I already have the traits of a true leader. It provided tips on how to improve specific leadership traits and also provided literatures and examples that make the book more interesting to read. What affected me most is the common sense approach to a subject that some of us really use in everyday life. I would like to say that my 8 years experience as a manager made me a seasoned pro, but this book opened my eyes to a foundation for what great leadership really is: Developing effective communication. After reading this book, I decided to include discussion of each chapter to my sales team in our daily huddle meetings.

While reading the book, I come across two qualities that I can recommend; these are Focus and Initiative. Every day we see successful people on television or in the newspaper or we come into contact with them in our daily lives. It is easy to look at these people and imagine ourselves as being as successful as they are. Although some of these people may not have the best character, they might not be the best listeners, and they might not all be easy to get along with, one thing that truly successful people all seem to have is initiative and focus. This is because in order to accomplish anything in life, you must take the first step toward accomplishing it. The world is full of people who want to have success who have a clear vision of what that success is. However, most of them do not have the initiative to start on the road toward accomplishing that success. Once you start on that road, it is even more difficult to stay focused and follow it through to the end. The world is also filled with distractions and people vying for your time. This is why I found these two traits to be the most important ones Maxwell has presented."

It was November 14- Saturday afternoon, my first day of class for my MBA course. I am supposed to be on time for the class at 2:00pm for my marketing management subject, this is just one of my ever favorite major subjects, unfortunately, because of some work related concern that I need to attend to, I arrived late at 2:30pm. Whew!

When I entered the room, everyone was smiling at me, they were already halfway to their “Introduce yourself” activity, and my professor abruptly said, “Are you part of this class?” “Yes” I replied immediately and proceeded to my chair. As I looked around, I felt glad I saw a lot of familiar faces, my goodness! Almost all of my classmates during the first semester were there and I was so excited to mingle with them again. Suddenly, my attention was freeze. That was the moment I looked straight to my professor. And questions running to my head, “why is she wearing a bandana over her head?”” Is she an activist or something?”” Or is this part of her fashion statement?”

And so I listened to her seriously, everything she imparted about the subject, relating them to her own professional experiences, seemed got into my nerve! I don’t understand why. She was just so articulate and knowledgeable with her chosen craft, added with very obvious strength which I couldn’t grasp at that time where it was coming from. She sounded like the woman I always dream of becoming. Few minutes before class ended, she begun sharing why she was covering her head. She had been undergoing chemotherapy as part of her medication for her “CERVICAL CANCER” condition. I was amazed with her total strength and faith while dealing with all the pain and struggles caused by her sickness. Couldn’t help but really think about it again and again, to the point that it pushed me to research more about the said sickness.

The risk of Cervical Cancer is greater than we thought. Worldwide, a woman dies of Cervical Cancer every 2 minutes in the Philippines; Cervical Cancer is the 2nd leading killer cancer for women. Cervical Cancer is a disease that affects the cervix in the female reproductive system. The cervix is the lower portion of the uterus that connects the upper vagina to the uterus. It is about two inches in length. During childbirth, the cervix dilates, allowing the baby to travel from the uterus to the vagina.

Cervical Cancer is caused by a common virus known as HPV or Human Papilloma Virus. HPV infection is easily transmitted;

Acquisition may be by skin-to-skin genital contact-- penetrative intercourse is not necessary to become infected.

Condom usage may not adequately protect individuals from exposure to HPV

It is estimated that 50-80 percent of women will acquire an HPV infection in their lifetime. Half of these women will be infected with cancer-causing HPV at some point, usually sooner after their first sexual intercourse.

What are the Symptoms of Cervical Cancer?

In the early stages of cervical cancer, there usually are no symptoms. Cervical cancer symptoms begin to appear as the disease advances, invading deeper into the cervix and surrounding tissue. As the disease progresses, women may experience:

abnormal vaginal bleeding, including post-coital bleeding

pain during sexual intercourse, however this can be common and unrelated to cervical cancer

pelvic pain

heavy vaginal discharge

What are the Risk Factors for Cervical Cancer?

One of the main risks for developing cervical cancer is being infected with the human papilloma virus (HPV). HPV is a common virus that is transmitted through sexual contact. Other cervical cancer risk factors include having sex at an early age, smoking cigarettes, having multiple sexual partners, and having a weakened immune system.

Keep in mind that risk factors only increase the likelihood of developing cervical cancer; they do not guarantee you will develop it.

How is Cervical Cancer Diagnosed?

The first step in diagnosing cervical cancer is through the Pap smear, a simple test that allows cervical cells to be examined under a microscope. If suspicious cells are found, then a colposcopy is performed. A colposcopy allows a doctor to view the cervix more closely. During the colpsocopy, a cervical biopsy may be done. If the biopsy finds cancerous cells, additional tests will be done to determine the stage of the disease.

How is Cervical Cancer Treated?

Cervical cancer is treated in several ways. The type of cervical cancer and the stage of the disease greatly affects what treatment methods are used.

Cervical cancer may be treated with surgery, such as a hysterectomy. Other forms forms of treatment include chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Treatment varies from patient to patient. One patient may only have surgery, while another may undergo several types of treatment. It all depends on the type and stage of cervical cancer.

After that first meeting with my professor, I went on vacation for 2 weeks, which means that I was not able to attend her class for 2 sessions. I was just getting updates from my MBA friends via online about their activities on class. I was even warned that I need to catch up fast when I get back because they have already reported and submitted 3 cases.

Just last Saturday, I was 30 minutes earlier than my class schedule with her; I was looking forward to see her new design of bandana or hat over her head. I read 3 cases to prepare my self with her questions. All I was thinking then was to see her again and be inspired! But then, a new male professor entered our room and told us about the sad news, He is now taking over our original professor because She is now on a very bad condition that the school believes she can no longer continue to teach us. That was sad! I wish I had more sessions with her; I was truly inspired by her strength, her faith and her positive outlook in life. Her condition pushed me to be more concern about my health.

A week later after I finish writing this blog, she finally returned in the loving hands of our almighty God. I attended once her wake and was amazed again with the flowers around coming from almost all prominent and powerful people in the city. Even there, you would feel her big contribution in the lives every davaoenous. “May You Rest in Piece Ma’am Omar! And thank you for the inspiration and for the life changing encounter!

The Way of the Shepherd

    <m:smallfrac m:val="off"> <m:dispdef> <m:lmargin m:val="0"> <m:rmargin m:val="0"> <m:defjc m:val="centerGroup"> <m:wrapindent m:val="1440"> <m:intlim m:val="subSup"> <m:narylim m:val="undOvr"> </m:narylim></m:intlim> </m:wrapindent>

Lately, I was hooked up with reading several books about leadership and it’s inspiring me a lot to re-evaluate my leadership skills. Thanks to my professor in MBA for introducing me to these books. Well, I’d like to chat a bit about one of these books “THE WAY OF THE SHEPHERD” By: Dr. Kevin Leman & William Pentak. The book is actually short, easy to read text full of useful principles to effective leadership and supervision. I’ve always wanted to finish reading this book the soonest possible so I can write my reaction or thoughts right away, but unfortunately, it took me so long this time. Blame it to my work and to my MBA classes who eat most of my time ;).

Anyway, this book is about a story of a cub reporter that lands the interview of a lifetime and walks away with the keys to exceptional leadership. When the reporter meets the most respected CEO in America “Ted McBride”, the businessman shares the seven secrets he learned long ago from his mentor “Dr. Jack Neumann”---an eccentric but brilliant professor who thought him proven management principles that, while ancient in origin, are readily applicable in today’s fast-paced, high-tech world.
Through a series of safe and supportive mentoring sessions, most of which revolve around Jack’s small flock of prized sheep, Dr. Neumann helps Ted explore the secrets of becoming an effective shepherd-leader in his new position as a supervisor of nine employees at General Technologies. Over the course of seven weeks, Jack assists Ted in coming to understand seven ancient principles of shepherding a flock of sheep, as well as people:
It made me realized how to infuse work with meaning and how to engage and energize my workforce.
Although only 123 pages in length, “The Way of the Shepherd” offers very powerful lessons in leading others in very simplistic, everyday terms. The simple lessons taught by Leman and Pentak are things we as leaders rarely think about. However, if you care about the people you supervise, this short but insightful book is a must read.
"What's with Hello Kitty? Isn't it for kids only?". That's how my friends would always react everytime they see me with my hello kitty collections. What they don’t realize is that hello Kitty is just almost my age. In fact, she is a year older than me. Hello Kitty was born on November 1, 1974, in suburban London, England.

I started to love her when I discovered what’s behind her character. I should say that we are so alike in so many ways. She is very energetic and loves to play outdoors, in the park or forest, but you can also find her happily practicing on the piano or baking a cake too. She is Very happy and cheerful, she loves to meet new people and make new friends.

Like Hello Kitty, I am an outgoing person too, an "anyway the wind blows" type of girl! Never get tired of discovering new places, chose to be one with nature at times, can easily get along well with different types of people in different walks of life. And of course! Cooking and Baking has always been part of my existence.

Hello Kitty lives in London, England with her mother, Mary, dad, George, and twin sister Mimmy. Kitty is curious whereas Mimmy is shy. Hello Kitty symbolizes generosity, innocence, kindness and most importantly... friendship. Her friends are Cathy, Tippy, Joey, Jodie, Fifi, Tracy, Tiny Chum, Rory, Mory, Tim and Tommy. Both Hello Kitty and Mimi have many friends at school and, together, they share many adventures. When school's out Hello Kitty travels the world making new friends. Her generosity and kindness endear her to everyone she meets. Her favorite thing is do tea parties and her hobbies include music, reading, eating the cookies her mother bakes, and best of all making new friends. Like she says "You can never have too many friends."

Funny sometimes, when my friends join me in shopping hello kitty stuff, and the moment they saw any hello kitty toys, they will immediately give it to me and I will say, “nah! That’s not hello kitty, that’s Mimi, her twin”, with astonishment in their faces, they ask, “How did you know? They look exactly the same!” Well, MIMMY - Kitty's twin sister always wears a ribbon on her right ear, while kitty wears ribbon on her left ear, so people can tell her and Kitty apart.

Now meet the other members of hello Kitty’s family: GEORGE - Kitty's Papa. He has a fabulous sense of humor and loves to make his family laugh. George works for a trading company. He is always hardworking and dependable, but sometimes a little absent-minded. MARY - Kitty's Mama. She is very kind and loving. Mary loves cooking and taking care of the house. Her apple pie is famous. ANTHONY - Kittys Grandpa. He knows lots of neat stuff, and can tell great tales. Also he loves to paint. MARGARET - Kitty's Grandma. She is a master pudding maker. And she loves doing embroidery in her rocking-chair.

Today, as I re-visit all my hello Kitty collections, I realized that I have been collecting them for more than a decade now. Thanks to my mom who consistently give me hello kitty stuff in every occasion of my life, to my sisters who always buy me Hello kitty when they have extra money, and to all my friends who always get out of their ways to look for a new hello kitty stuff that they can add to my collections.

Are Leaders Born or Made?!

Most research that I encountered stated that leaders are 50/50 born and made. But in my own opinion, Leaders are sort of born and they're always made.

It seems like there's only one thing that a person needs to actually be born with in order to be a leader later in life. That's intelligence. A leader needs to be smart enough. Though effective leaders aren't necessarily the smartest people on the team, they just have to be smart enough to do the job assigned to them.

When I was younger, back in my school days time, I used to be so quite and shy. I hate oral reporting and reading in front of the class. My teachers wouldn’t spot any leadership skills in me back then. I never expected that someday I will lead a team or a group of people whom I need to help grow, develop and achieve results.

I must say that I am not a born leader, I would like to believe that I am more of a made leader. As I grow older after I finished college, I was given a chance to develop my leadership abilities through the job assigned to me. From then, my focus has always been handling the responsibility of achieving objectives and results.

Because of my relevant experience, I learned to make decisions. Lots of people wake up every day and let the world happen to them. But leaders must be able and willing to make decisions that affect themselves and others.

By the time a person becomes an adult we can tell if they have the basic qualities that we expect leaders to have. We can determine if they're smart enough to do the job. We can tell if they are willing to help others to achieve results as a group. And we can tell if they will make decisions.

No matter how they measure up on the key essentials, no one emerges from the womb or from adolescence with all the skills in place to be an effective leader. Everybody has to learn the job. That's why leaders are always made.

I learned 80% of my craft on the job. I learned from watching other leaders and emulating their behavior. I choose role models and seek out mentors. I ask other leaders about how to handle situations. For me, Leadership learning is a lifetime activity. You're never done because there's always more to learn. There are always skills you need to improve.

This is to share with you a touch of my own learning so far in relation to how I was made to be a leader. My solid grounding in the practicalities of life; along with my self-assuredness and my willingness to appreciate new things develop my leadership skills. My confidence gives me the potential to take my general awareness and channel it into leadership. Currently, my job requires me to take the lead role in selling our products/services to prospective consumer market along with managing and mentoring my Sales Team’s daily door-to-door selling activity within my assigned geographical area. I am also responsible to head the sales process from initial point of contact (lead generation), presentations, proposals, through contract negotiations and execution. Make sure my Sales Team meets/exceeds minimum monthly and annual sales objectives. Engage, equip, and direct my Sales Team with appropriate training, tools, and strategy development for our products/services.

My leadership style is another strength that I considered present within me;

I encourage every member of my team to be a part of the decision making.

I see to it to keep my team informed about everything that affects their work and shares decision making and problem solving responsibilities.

Though I am always on top of everything and always have the final say, I gather information from my team members before making a decision.

Typically, it is my imperative to develop plans to help members of my team evaluate their own performance.

Allows members to establish goals;

Encourages members to grow on the job and be promoted;

I'm bored! I'm just missing you so much...Every time I feel this way, my desire to write is burning inside me again, but often end up with nothing to write...hahahaha...Oh! well, maybe because its been difficult for me to be away from you now...you are miles, miles away from me. My thoughts are seeing you every corner of every places I go, sounds crazy, but that's how exactly I'm feeling right at this moment.
I always remember when I wake up in the morning and the first beautiful thing I see is your face, I suddenly close my eyes and whispers "thanks God, He choose US to be US!". It's always lovely to start my day being with you, doing a lot of things together, enjoying each others company, sharing romantic moments together.
I'm counting the days left for us to be together again, I want you to hold me so tight. When time allows and we can be together the way we want to, I'll hold you as if it will be my last mission. But that is just a fragment of my imagination and fantasy. I miss you, my love, and want nothing more than to be in your arms until you kiss my boredom away

I Miss You!

I love you with the deepest craze and I wish we could see each other every day but I know that you're so far away. My hubby and I have always been fond of going to different beaches in Davao City, plus the added pleasure of swimming, but one very Windy Saturday just this holiday, we decided to drive to one of the beaches out of town, located in San Ignacio, Manay Davao Oriental.

This peninsula is a favorite view and visible upon passing Badas Point. Since we couldn’t resist the beauty of its natural wonder, we never forget to take pictures of its sceneries as if we will never see it again.

Then we finally arrived at our final destination at White Beach Resort in San Ignacio, Manay Davao Oriental, just across the coconut farm lot of my parents. The place was magical, enchanting and wonderful. No pollution, no factories, no litter and literally we felt so safe strolling down the stretch of white sand beach up to dusk! We just felt so relaxed and so free from all the hassles of everyday life in the city.
