James Talarico is no Henry Cuellar, the one border Democrat who called out the border mess.

James Talarico has more videos than anyone. You can spend an entire afternoon watching everything that this man has recorded over the years. He has a video explaining how the angel told Mary about the baby.

What we don't have is a video of Talarico standing up to the Biden administration and rejecting their border policy. We have a campaign video saying that, but no video to support what he is claiming.

Glad to see that the Border Patrol Union is not buying it:

The National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) — the union of the U.S. Border Patrol — isn’t fooled. “JAMES TALARICO DOES NOT SUPPORT BORDER SECURITY: Talarico’s false claim that he called out the Biden Administration for failing on the border is nothing more than a #FakeNews political ad,” it posted on October 14.
NBPC continued:
His record shows that he labeled border security funding as “wasting money on dumb things,” and instead supported diverting $800 million in funds away from protecting our borders. He voted AGAINST creating a Border Protection Unit and he has called for “pathways” to citizenship, aka “AMNESTY” for illegal aliens. At least 25 million illegal aliens invaded the US during the 4 years of the disastrous Biden Administration and openly advocating for pathways to citizenship is NOT putting America First and will lead to the destruction of America as we know it.
We CANNOT afford another disaster on our borders!

Glad to see the Border Patrol union punch back. I live here in Texas, and James Talarico is no Henry Cuellar, the one border Democrat who called out the border mess.

Show us the video or a transcript of the speech. We think that you are making that up. Prove us wrong with anything that confirms your position.

We remember Rita Hayworth (1918-1987)

We remember Rita Hayworth who was born Margarita Carmen Cansino in New York on this day in 1918. She died In 1987.

Many years ago, she made "Blood & Sand" in Cuba. The movie told the story of Juan Gallardo who rose to the top finding fame and fortune as a bullfighter then fell on his face. The stars were Tyrone Power, Linda Darnell and Rita Hayworth.

It is a great movie and I just learned that it was filmed in Mexico.

October 17, 1989: The San Francisco earthquake......

On this day in 1989, I was listening to The World Series pre-game show on the English radio station in Mexico City. The signal disappeared and the the announcer came back saying that an earthquake had hit the area.

It turned out to be a bad one. I remember watching the TV scenes later that night.

The series was anti-climatic and the A's swept the Giants. We recall that moment when the signal went off the air and wondered what had happened in the Bay Area.

Watergate a hoax?:

The conduct of the DOJ and media deserves a second look.

If you are a baby boomer, you remember The Beatles, Henry Aaron hitting #715, and President Nixon resigning over Watergate. It was our soundtrack, as they like to say. It gave us words like "Nixonian" and "The Saturday Night Massacre" and Oval Office tapes. It turned the 37th president into an evil man, and everyone took a shot at him. Even the GOP took down his pictures at the party's convention.

As someone who admired President Nixon, bought and read all of his post presidency books, and volunteered as a student for his 1972 reelection campaign, I do believe that revisiting Watergate is a good idea. Maybe The Washington Post will end up returning that Pulitzer? Don't bet on that, but who knows?

What if Watergate was a hoax, as we say these days? Honestly, after watching Russiagate, the New York trials, and everything else, the idea is not so crazy. I'm not ready to call it a hoax yet, but I'm open to a conversation, as they say these days.

Well, some people think so, such as John D. O'Connor:

Many citizens today, with varied sources of information, understand the highly unethical lawfare waged against President Donald Trump, as exemplified by the Russiagate hoax. By contrast, the more restricted media environment of the early 1970s made prosecutorial misconduct during Watergate harder to scrutinize. With fresh eyes now taking a closer look at the reporting and prosecution of Watergate, it is becoming clear that DOJ investigators should sanction prosecutorial misconduct and set the historical record straight on Richard Nixon’s innocence.

As a refresher, Watergate refers to a political scandal stemming from the June 17, 1972, burglary of the Democratic National Committee’s offices in the Watergate building by burglars with known CIA ties. After two years of investigations, committee inquiries, and trials, over 40 government officials were convicted or jailed, and President Richard Nixon was forced to resign from office.

Recently, former Nixon aide and historian Geoff Shepard presented his case to the Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), arguing that the proceedings against Richard Nixon amounted to dishonest, partisan “lawfare” enabled by prosecutorial and Congressional misconduct. Hopefully, the OPR will follow up with a vigorous investigation and clear the record of this unfairly maligned former president.

Clear the record of this unfairly maligned former president? Yes, it's time for a second look at that whole story.

As the article points out:

Why, fifty years later, should we investigate any flaws in Nixon’s prosecution? Because key questions remain: 1) was the prosecution of Nixon and aides (with Nixon as an unindicted co-conspirator) so clearly unethical that the OPR should conclude formally that the prosecution was fatally and unethically flawed;
and 2) were the Senate investigation and Majority Watergate Report false in material particulars, constituting a willfully false official Report to the public? In light of the attempted replay of Watergate and the Russiagate hoax, these questions are existential.

Bring it on. Maybe it's time to revisit that whole episode that consumed the country for years. I do recall people back then, such as a neighbor historian, saying that there was a lot of hypocrisy in these attacks against President Nixon. I do believe that the collapse of Vietnam and the betrayal of the Shah of Iran would have turned out differently if President Nixon had been in the Oval Office.

So, let's open up the case and hear more about this.

Memories of Mark Holtz (1942-97) on the radio

Maybe I'm old fashioned but baseball is best on the radio. Of course, I like to watch the games on TV but a good radio announcer is still my favorite.

Mark Holtz was born in October 1942 and passed away in 1997. He was added to the Rangers' Hall of Fame a few years ago. Holtz was the radio voice of the Rangers from 1982 until 1997, or when he died of cancer.

Holtz made a very bad team interesting. Mark had terrible Rangers' teams for much of his broadcasting career. Yet, it was fun to turn on the radio at 7 PM and hear Mark introduce the starting lineup.

Sadly, Holtz passed away and was not around for the '98 and '99 division titles or the back to back trips to The World Series in 2010 and 2011.

Holtz did broadcast the '96 season, including the Friday night pennant clincher, the first one in team history. The Rangers clinched in the 10th inning of the 160th game when the news came in that Oakland had beaten Seattle. It was pure joy to hear Mark Holtz say that the Rangers were the AL West champs for '96. It was just great!

I remember 3 of Mark's greatest radio calls:

First, it was Nolan Ryan's 6th no hitter in Oakland. ("The Ryan Express has done it again"....screamed Holtz as the team mobbed Ryan)

Second, Ryan's 7th no hitter. ("He struck him out swinging" was the last line of the game)

Third, Kenny Rogers' perfect game from the summer of '94.

Holtz was not smooth like Vince Scouly but he was great.

1983 World Series: Scott McGregor beat Phillies 5-0

The Orioles played in their second World Series in 5 years. They lost to the Pirates in 1979 but beat the Phillies in 1983. Scott McGregor pitched beautifully and Eddie Murray hit a couple of home runs.

Great win for the O's.

Greta Thunberg is back in the news. She has a new cause, a new movement to join, and something to blame Europeans for. Let's catch up with Greta:

Greta Thunberg, the Swedish activist known for her climate alarmism, joined French students protesting school conditions Tuesday, praising their movement as France grapples with weeks of demonstrations and violent clashes.

Thunberg appeared outside a high school near the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis, where students gathered early in the morning with placards and megaphones, chanting slogans. The 23-year-old activist, who first gained recognition for her own school strike over climate change in 2018, said she is there to support the teens protesting their “basic rights.”

“The whole world is watching with awe for these students who are fighting back, reclaiming their future that has been taken away from them,” Thunberg said at the protest. “We are also seeing this spreading across the country and internationally as well — young people looking at this as an example.”

“Many people here, especially the young people, are told ‘Oh, you are just being problematic, you’re just causing trouble, and you don’t really know what you’re doing,’ which are narratives defined by extremely racist media and politicians,” she added. Thunberg said the protestors “don’t need me at all,” but argued that her “privileged” position gave her a duty to support them.

“I am an extremely privileged person. I am a white person from Sweden. I am very much part of this very destructive system that systematically benefits people like me,” she said.

A system that benefits people like her? Really, Greta? Privileged position? Greta has been reading too much about the 1619 Project.

Teens protesting their basic rights? Protesting by injuring 700 police officers? You can't make this up.

"The whole world is watching"? Weren't they chanting that at the 1968 riots during the DNC convention in Chicago? Get a new chant, Greta.

As I understand it, France is facing an "argent" problem, or French for money. That's what I remember from that quick French class that I saw on the internet. No matter what the word is, the problem is that France, like many countries, has to address budget concerns, and bloated education bureaucracies are one place to start. Too many bureaucrats at the main office writing memos and handbooks to justify their existence. France can't afford that anymore, and some cutting is inevitable.

That's life, Greta! That's the way it is for people, unlike Greta, who have to live within a budget. You can't always get what you want, as that old Rolling Stones song goes.

Of course, that's not what Greta wants to hear or attempt to understand. She lives in the land of victims or the corner of promoting herself. Greta knows that the media loves a young woman who blames everything in her culture. What does a shortage of teachers or lousy classrooms have to do with French culture? I don't know, but it sounds good in this age of quick fame and X posts.

So, here's one for Greta to think about: get a life like a real person. Maybe you'll be happier if you stop going from cause to cause to seek happiness.

Mike Cuellar and Orioles won game 5 and the 1970 World Series

On this day in 1970, Mike Cuellar pitched a complete game and the Orioles took the World Series in 5 games.

During his brilliant career, he won 185 games, a 3.14 ERA and completed 172 starts! Without question, one of the best Latino pitchers ever.

Mike died in 2010. He was voted # 27 in the Top 40 Orioles of all time.

We remember Tim McCarver (1941-2023)

We remember Tim McCarver who was born on this day in 1941. Tim broke with the Cardinals in 1959 and became one of the best catchers in the game. He retired with a .271 batting average in 1,909 games. After baseball, he became a great TV analyst.

He died in 2023.

"I love Lucy" aired on US TV on this day in 1951.

It was the most popular situation comedy TV show of its day. In fact, 72% of US household watched the episode when Lucy went to the hospital to give birth to Little Ricky.

The plot was different or a Cuban bandleader in New York married to one of the craziest housewives in the planet. Add to that Fred & Ethel and you had all of the ingredients for a very funny episode.

"I love Lucy" lives on thanks to reruns and very funny episodes. I think that I've seen

1948: Gerald Ford married Elizabeth Bloomer

We remember that future President Gerald Ford married Elizabeth Anne (“Betty”) Bloomer on this day in 1948. Gerald Ford died on December 26, 2006, at the age of 93. Betty died on July 8, 2011, also at age 93.

And he was my first vote for President in 1976.

1975: Big day for Luis Tiant

We remember Luis Tiant’s career because he won
229 games in the majors. He also led the AL in ERA in 1968 and 1972.

Today, we recalled that he pitched a brilliant 6-0 shutout against Cincinnati in game 1 of the 1975 World Series. He did it against a lineup that included Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, fellow Cuban Tony Perez, David Concepcion, George Foster and a few others. They were called The Big Red Machine for a reason!

Tiant came back and won game 4 with a complete game that featured 163 pitches! He started game 6, after a few days of rain, but did not get a decision. That was the game where Carlton Fisk hit the HR in the bottom of the 12th.

We remember the man they called “El Tiante” and his brilliant pitching on this day in 1975.

1991: Clarence Thomas confirmed to The Supreme Court

We remember that Clarence Thomas was confirmed to the Supreme Court on this day in 1991.

I remember watching President Bush introduce Judge Thomas. I felt good for the country and Judge Thomas. What a way to show the progress we had made on racial issues, by nominating a man of integrity and a history of self-reliance. I did not know much about Mr. Thomas but walked away with a favorable impression.

I had no idea what Senators Biden and Kennedy had in store for the country. The confirmation hearings turned into a disgrace when Clarence Thomas was forced to respond to Anita Hill’s charges. It was a low point for the U.S. Senate. I guess a deeper low was reached with Judge Kavanaugh in 2018. Who knew that the U.S. Senate could reach such levels of immaturity?

The whole thing had nothing to do with their relationship, whatever that was. It was a last-minute attempt by the Democrats to “Bork” Thomas before he had a chance to join the Court. The 1987 Borking of Judge Bork was still fresh in our minds.

It was a high-tech lynching, as Mr. Thomas told the committee. For me, it was all about abortion, as we saw in the aforementioned Kavanaugh hearings.

History will judge Thomas. No one will ever question Thomas’s character, which is a lot stronger than all of the feminists and liberals who took cheap shots at him to keep Roe v. Wade in place.

My guess is that Grandpa Thomas is very proud of his grandson Clarence!

A father-son story in the middle of the 1975 World Series

As any baseball fan knows, the 1975 World Series was one of the greatest ever, from Carlton Fisk to Pete Rose to Johnny Bench to Joe Morgan. It was also a great story about a father and his son.

Today, we remember Luis Tiant. He won 229 games in the majors. He also led the A.L. in ERA in 1968 and 1972. Along with Juan Marichal, he was one of the best right-handers from Latin America.

We also remember his father, one of the best pitchers in Cuban history and the Negro Leagues. Luis Sr. pitched in the U.S., Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico, as well as touring with teams from 1926 through 1948. Unfortunately, he never got to play in the Major Leagues.

Many years ago, a proud father watched his son pitch a World Series beauty, a brilliant 6-0 shutout against Cincinnati in Game 1 of the 1975 World Series. He did it against a lineup that included Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, fellow Cuban Tony Perez, David Concepción, George Foster, and a few others. They were called The Big Red Machine for a reason!

We say happy birthday to Al Oliver who was born in Ohio on this day in 1946.

Oliver broke in with the Pirates in 1968. He spent the next few years as one of the best hitters in the NL: .296 in 10 years with Pittsburgh.

In 1977, he went to Texas (.319 in 4 seasons) and later to Montreal, where he won an NL batting title in 1982: .331 average, 22 HR, 109 RBI and 204 hits.

Overall, a rather productive career: .303, 1,328 RBI & 2,743 hits.

Happy days are here again. It's another Columbus Day and an opportunity to remember everything that sailed with him.

In 2017, President Trump signed a proclamation for Columbus and it did not blame Christopher for a darn thing. Let’s see the text:

Five hundred and twenty-five years ago, Christopher Columbus completed an ambitious and daring voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas. The voyage was a remarkable and then-unparalleled feat that helped launch the age of exploration and discovery. The permanent arrival of Europeans to the Americas was a transformative event that undeniably and fundamentally changed the course of human history and set the stage for the development of our great Nation. Therefore, on Columbus Day, we honor the skilled navigator and man of faith, whose courageous feat brought together continents and has inspired countless others to pursue their dreams and convictions -- even in the face of extreme doubt and tremendous adversity.
More than five centuries after his initial voyage, we remember the “Admiral of the Ocean Sea” for building the critical first link in the strong and enduring bond between the United States and Europe. While Isabella I and Ferdinand II of Spain sponsored his historic voyage, Columbus was a native of the City of Genoa, in present day Italy, and represents the rich history of important Italian American contributions to our great Nation. There can be no doubt that American culture, business, and civic life would all be much less vibrant in the absence of the Italian American community. We also take this opportunity to reaffirm our close ties to Columbus’s country of birth, Italy. Italy is a strong ally and a valued partner in promoting peace and promoting prosperity around the world.
In commemoration of Christopher Columbus’s historic voyage, the Congress, by joint resolution of April 30, 1934, and modified in 1968 (36 U.S.C. 107), as amended, has requested the President proclaim the second Monday of October of each year as “Columbus Day.”
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 9, 2017, as Columbus Day. Glad to see it. I’m sure that President Trump was called a racist or this or that. However, his point is correct.

The Europeans brought a lot to the New World, such as the rule of law and eventually the Bill of Rights that allows uninformed people to protest Columbus’ monuments.

Blaming Columbus for every native woman raped or village destroyed misrepresents what actually happened after he landed here. After all, most of today's Columbus critics would not last a second under Moctezuma, Geronimo, or the others. The "indigenous people" crowd has created this romantic view of what was here before Columbus.

As for me, I’m delighted that I was born in a New World discovered by Columbus. In the meantime, the attacks continue.

We remember Justin Hayward who was born on this day in 1946. Justin is the lead singer and composer of The Moody Blues are one of my all time favorite UK bands. They were the first rock band to bring the symphony orchestra into the studio. The net result was a lot of top selling albums and worldwide sales of over 50 million copies all over the world.

October 14, 1962: Day 1 of The Cuban Missile Crisis

We remember Day 1 of what would be known The Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962.

It turned out to be one of the most tense two weeks of the 20th century.

The Cuban Missile Crisis had several consequences:

First, it changed the perception in US politics that President Kennedy was weak. In other words, most voters saw his performance as strong.

Second, it was the beginning of the end for Chairman Khrushchev. He was gone by the fall of 1964. The Soviets invested heavily in their military afterwards. They understood that they were inferior to the US in October 1962.

Third, and sad for Cubans, it guaranteed Castro’s survival and the establishment of a Soviet satellite. The Soviet Union subsidized Cuba until it collapsed in 1992.

My family was down in the island and my parents recall a very stressful period.

This is a decent book & movie.
