(On my blazing heart, the dew of your loving eyes falls,

jalate hue jangal par jaise, barakha barase ruk-ruk tham-tham

as if, on the burning jungle, the rain falls intermittently!)

chham-chham, chham-chham, chham-chham, chham-chham

hosh meiN thoRi behoshi hai, behoshi mein hosh hai kam kam

(My consciousness is bit out of senses, and my unconsciousness has a little awareness,

ORIGINAL IN THE MOVIE ....MUJHE JEENE DO

Raat bhi hai kuch by DexterMurry

After the death of his father, Jaidev took the responsibility of looking after his sister. In 1943, he left for Lucknow to study under music maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

Ali Akbar Khan took Jaidev as his music assistant, in 1951, when he composed music for Navketan's 'Aandhiyan' and 'Hum Safar'. From film 'Taxi Driver' on, he became assistant to music composer, S. D. Burman.

His big break as a full-fledged music director came with Chetan Anand's film , Joru Ka Bhai, followed by Chetan Anand's next Anjali, both of these films became very popular.

Though it was with the film Navketan's Hum Dono (1961) that Jaidev true came into the limelight, with the songs like, "Allah Tero Naam", 'Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar", "Main Zindagi Ka Saath" and "Kabhi khud pe Kabhi Halat pe". His other big success came with Sunil Dutt star, Mujhe Jeene Do (1963).

Though many of Jaidev's films failed at the box office, many of them, such as Alap, Kinare Kinare and Ankahee, are remembered for his imaginative musical scores. He had a unique capability to mix traditional and folk music into bollywood film situations, giving him a unique advantage to other music directors of his times.

Jaidev never married, though he remained close to his sister's family, who later settled in the United Kingdom. He died on 6 January 1987, at the age of 68.

(With Lyrics-Urdu) This masterpiece is sung by Lata ji, written by Rajendra Krishan, and composed by C. Ramchandra. This song can considered as one of the best songs of Bollywood. The original song is on Bina Roy for the movie Anarkali. I have compiled it on Madhubala and I hope you will like it.

(LYRICS)

Yeh zindagi usi ki hai

Jo kisi ka ho gaya

Pyaar hi mein kho gaya

Yeh zinadgi usi ki hai

Yeh bahaar, yeh samaaN

Keh raha hai pyaar kar

Kisi ki arzoo mein apney dil ko beqarar kar

Zindagi hai beywafa....

zindagi hai beywafa

Loot pyaar ka mazaa

Yeh zindagi usi ki hai

Dhadak raha hai dil to kya

Dil Ki dhadkanein na gin

Phir kahaan yeh fursatein

Phir kahaan yeh raat din

Aa rahi hai ye sadaa.........

Mastiyoon mein doob ja

Yeh zindagi usi ki hai

Jo kisi ka ho gaya

(LYRICS WITH TRANSLATION) It is a miracle that RAVINDRA JAIN JI, who could not see this beautiful world since his birth, could write such a stunning poetry and compose amazing melodies. Hemlata has made this song memorable with her sweet voice for the movie Sunayana.

She is Jagmohan's Love (O Varsha ke Pehle Badal) living in a remote mountain village - Alka. She was blind when He left her for the distant lands in search of livelihood. In the meantime, she got her eyesight back. Holding his picture, she is sending him the message through the clouds. She does not know where her lover is, but she feels, that these clouds will definitely deliver her message.

LYRICS WITH TRANSLATION
Megha, O re megha

(Clouds, O clouds,

Tu to jaye des bades

You are roaming from country to country,

Why don’t you bring the message of my love’s return?)

Megha, O re megha…………………..

Surat sajan ki undekhi

(I have never seen the face of my Love,

Moorat who kuch kuch maan dekhi

But, his image is somewhat in my vision,

Ke main iss se aadit nahin kuch jaanti,

I do not know anything more than that,

Bas un ke qadmoon ki aahat ko pechanti hoon

Except, I recognize only the sound of his footsteps)

Wayun, O ri wayun

(Air , O Air

Tu to dole des bides

You wander from country to country,

Tu na laye, pi ke Milan sundes

You also did not bring message of meeting my Love)

Megha o re megha…………………………..

Pi ke daras ko, nayain miley

(I have eyes only to see my Love,

Daras miley to, chayin miley

If I see him, I will be comforted,

Hai ab apana milan, barosey Raam ke,

But, our meeting only depends upon the will of God,

Sunayna pi ko na dekha to, nayina kis kam ke

The eyes are useless, if Sunayna (me) didn’t see her love)

Sajna, O re sajna

(Love! O my Love

Kit bhatke des bides

Why are you drifting country to country?

Kahan baijoon, main apney maan ka sandes

Where should I send you the message how I feel)

Megha o re megha…………………………..

(LYRICS, TRANSLATION & VIDEO) This is an eternal Bhajan / Prayer for every person of any race, creed or religion. KL Saigal, sang it in his intense heart piercing voice for the movie Bakat Surdas. I feel, only sarswati Lata ji can bring the depth of feelings of the words expressed by Kundanlal Saigal. It reignites the flame of complete surrender to the Lord.

The great poet DN Madhok wrote this beautiful piece of poetry and the grand composer Gyan Dutt created this fabulous composition..

I have compiled this video keeping in mind the devotion of Meera ji to her Lord.

KHURSHEED BANO ... Barso re .. Tansen.. A Forgotten song

2014-03-29T08:41:00.001-07:00

This spectacular song was created by one of the greatest music director Khemchand Parkash on the poetry of Pt. Indra Chandra. This is Khursheed Bano's greatest masterpiece. Her range and control is exceptional in this song. Perhaps, such songs are created once in a century.
“After singing Deepak Raag, Tansen felt that he is being cremating from inside. Her Love – Khursheed Bano sang Raag Malhaar, requesting the clouds to come and rain to cool him down”.
I have added some audio video effects of clouds, thunder and rain in the original video.

KHURSHEED BANO

She was born as Irshad Begum in the village of Choonian, in Kasur District, Lahore, Punjab, now in Pakistan. Khurshid did a number of movies for Ranjeet Movietone and her leading men included famous actors like K.L.Saigol, Motilal, and Jairaj.

Bhagat Surdas (Her famous song “Panchee Bawra” whose composer was Gyan Dutt became a very famous song of the forty’s. The other famous and popular songs from the same film are “Madhur Madhur Ga Ray Manwa”, “Jholee Bhar Taray Laday Ray”, and a duet “Chandni Raat Aur Taray Khilay Hon”with K.L. Saigol.), Chandni and Patola (in Punjabi) in 1941. Tansen and Nurse (“Koyalia Kahay Bolay Ree”) in 1943. Tansen with music composed by legendary Khemchand Parkash was a very successful film of her career in box office. She became very popular with this film as an actress as well as a singer.

Her famous songs (with her name as Tani as heroine in this film) included such popular songs as “Barso Re”, “Ghata Ghan Ghor Ghor”, “Dukhia Jiara”, “Ab Raja Bhae Moray Balam”, and a duet, “Moray Bala Pun Kay Sathee Chela” with K.L. Saigol. Her other famous films are, Mumtaz Mahal (“Jo Hum Pay Guzarti Hai”, “Dil Kee Dharkan Bana Liya”), Shahenshah Babar (“Mohabbat Mein Sara Jahan Jal Raha Hai”,”Bulbul aa tu bhi ga”) in 1944. Prabhu ka Ghar and Moorti (“Ambwa Pay Koyal Boley”, “Baderia baras gayee uss paar”) with music composition by Bilo.C.Rani in 1945. Aagey Barho and Mitti (Chahi kali ghata more balam) in 1947. Aap Beetee (“Meree Bintee Suno Bhagwan”) in 1948.

Khurshid Bano migrated to Pakistan after independence, with her husband/manager Lala Yakub who was an occasional actor and a member of the Bhati Gate Group Lahore. Her two Pakistani films were Fankaar and Mandee in 1956. Frustrated from her spouse she left him and married in 1956 a genuine admirer who was in the shipping business and his name was Yusuf bhai Mian and later became a philanthropist. After marriage with Yusuf bhai Mian she appeared in few PTV shows. A number of private shows were also held by her admirers and private institutions, which were attended by her.

Kursheed and Surriya were the two singing actresses of Mumbai Film-world who have shared the honours with the renowned singer K.L. Saigol. This talented and famous actress/singer of the thirties and the forty’s, Khurshid Bano rested in peace on 18th April 2001 in Karachi, at the age of 87 years and thus an era of talent in terms of acting/singing in the film industry finally came to an end.

Khemchand Prakash

He was one of the greatest music composer in Hindi film industry 1940. Born 12 December 1907 in Sujangarh, Rajasthan, he got his first training of music and dance from his father. He joined Bikaner Royal court as a singer performer and later moved to the royal court of Nepal. But the destiny landed him in Kolkata and he joined New Theaters in Kolkata as an assistant of music director Timir Baran. He was an assistant of Timir Baran in movie Devdas (1935 ). He made his debut in 1939 with the Supreme Pictures Meri Aankhein.

Lata Mangeshkar with him (in films Asha, Ziddi, Mahal) started making a name. Khursheed Bano was his leading singer and both of them gave many hits of early 40s.

The film ‘Mahal’ released in the year- 1950 will be remembered for all times to come. It is not because that it was directed by legendary Kamal Amrohi; neither owing to the fact that Ashok Kumar and Madhubala acted in the film, nor because of the reason that Bimal Roy was its editor. But, the fact remains that the film is still recalled in view of its grand background music and immortal melodious songs.

The film ‘Mahal’ became a landmark in the history of Indian cinema primarily because of its music; and the then lesser known Lata Mangeshkar came to limelight and established herself as the most popular singer of the century after one and only – Kundan Lal Saigal.

How can one forget – ‘Aayega aney wala’, ‘Mushkil hei bahut mushkil’, ’Dil ney phir yaad kiyaa’ sung by unknown Lata Mangeshkar; ‘Ghabra key jo humsar ko’, ‘Ek teer chalaa’, ‘Mein wo haseen hoon’ sung by acclaimed Rajkumari; and ‘Chhun chhun ghungharwa’ sung by famed Johrabai and Rajkumari.

Prior to Mahal, the records used to feature only the character name on the record. Hence the first lot of records had “Aayega aane wala” credited to Kamini. The first time when the song was played on All India Radio many calls were received by AIR to know the singers name. AIR had to in turn ask the record company and announce Lata Mangeshkar's name on air.

It was in 1943 that pushed Khemchand Prakash much ahead of other music directors of that era with the film Tansen. Songs like "Diya jalaao jagmag jagmag", "Rumjhum rumjhum chal tihari", "More balpan ke saathi", "Sapt suran teen gram", "Hath sine pe jo rakh do to karara aa jaaye", “Barso Re” were hits.

Khemchand Prakash was one of the leading music directors of the 40s. His contemporaries were Kamal dasgupta, Ghulam Haider, C. Ramchandra, Anil Biswas. He was a pioneer in the field of classical music. His fellow composer great Kamal Dasgupta called Khemchand the best music director, he has beaten us all.

1948 marked yet another significant film of his career, Bombay Talkies’s Ziddi. He gave first major break to Kishore Kumar as a singer for the song “Marne ki duaaen kyun maangu”. Ziddi featured a beautiful song of Lata Mangeshkar “Chanda re ja re ja re”.

It was Khemchand Prakash who took Naushad under his wings as an assistant and helped launch what would become a very successful career as a music director.

Sadly, ten days before the release of all time classic ‘Mahal’, on 10 August, 1950 Khemchand Prakash expired at the age of just 45 years, leaving behind a wonderful legacy of music for all times to come.

It is a sheer coincidence that other two greats of his time in the field of music- Kundan Lal Saigal and Gulam Haider as well died in their forties in the years- 1947 and 1953 respectively..

Mann Chandra- Crazy Heart

The Lyrics of the song: (Punjabi)

Mann chandre nu raas na aave, Na aave dharwaas

(Love neither suits my crazy heart, nor do I feel any relief!)

Jigar da sauda kyon kar baitha, mukadi jaandi aas

(Why did I throw away (sell) my heart, and now the hope is also fading)

Jey lut janda tey lut janda dil, hauke kha ke chhup jaanda

(Once my heart is gone, it's gone and should have gone into seclusion after crying)

Beparwah da ki kehna, Na aave dharwaas..

(What to say about careless, there is no relief..)

(Pain hurts but heartless have no regret about it..)

Main Sutti Rahiyaan, Ranjha Ranjha Kardi ..... by MukhtarSheikh

(LYRICS with MEANING, Video) This haunting musical arrangements 'Main Sutti Rahiyaan' has an effect of wilderness around it. The charismatic voice of Shubha Mudgal has heightened the sheen of this rustic song. Gaurav Issar's lyrics and captivating composition have typical 'Punjabi-Sufi’ ambience.

This song can be interpreted both as a spiritual experience (which I think, is escape from the reality) or actual reality of separation from her beloved. I have opted for the real worldly love to describe the misery of separation.

The poetry depicts the feeling of a woman who lost her love:

“While bringing water from the desert, she met and provided water to a thirsty traveller. He gave ride on his camel to her village. She fell into his love. It was an eventful night in the village, a marriage dance and rain after a very long dry spell. She danced all night in joy of infatuation and got tired. She fell asleep and did get up early in the morning. When she got up and found the traveller has already left. In hurry, she broke the pitcher from which she gave water to her Love. She took it a bad omen. She lamented and cursed her for the negligence and ran after him but did not find him”.

JAGMOHAN .. US RAAG KO PAYAL MEIN ..Madhuri .... by MukhtarSheikh

YOUTUBE

Jagmohan - a voice that kept listeners glued to the radio for hours together, and his songs made super hits in the past. I still remember listening to Jagmohan in the dead of the night on Radio Ceylon in my school-days. His voice would come shimmering like waves of ocean in that stillness of night.

Think of music created by Kamal Dasgupta that's nothing short of magic, and a poetry of Fayyaz Hashmi that a queer mix of Hindi and Urdu. Think of the voice of Sursagar that kept listeners glued to the radio for hours together, and his songs made such super hits. Truly an ocean of rhythm. A pulsating soft and sensuous voice and that depth that reaches out to the innermost recesses of soul.

Jagjit Singh's style and melody was a departure from the prevalent style of ghazal rendition, which was heavily based on classical and semi-classical Indian music. Compared to his earlier ghazals (sung during 70s and 80s) his later ghazals have acquired a more soulful and poignant demeanour. Jagjit Singh is accredited with bringing the ghazal genre, which was previously restricted to the elite classes, to the masses.

Nida Fazli was born in Delhi, India in 1938 and attended school in Gwalior. His father was an Urdu poet. During the Partition of India his parents migrated to Pakistan, but Fazli decided to stay in India.

Nida Fazli's ghazals are sung by notable artists of the day. He teamed up with Jagjit Singh in 1994 to bring an album named INSIGHT, which got appreciation for its soulful poetry and music. He wrote famous ghazal for movie Sarfarosh sung by Jagjit Singh: Hosh Waalon ko

Jagjit Kaur : Born in an affluent Punjabi Zamindar family she must have had a number of wealthy suitors, but she chose a struggling musician Khayyam to marry. When you hear the songs the two created together, you feel the pairing must have been made in the heaven.

Mohammed Zahur "Khayyam" Hashmi, better known as Khayyam, is an Indian music composer whose career spanned four decades (1953–1990).

He has won three Filmfare Awards for Best Music in 1977 for Kabhi Kabhie and 1982 for Umrao Jaan, and a lifetime achievement award in 2010 . He was awarded the 2007 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Creative Music, by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of Music, Dance and Theatre. He has been awarded the third-highest civilian honor, Padma Bhushan by the Government of India for 2011.

Khayyam has composed music for just over 50 films in his long career, yet his impact on listeners has been far greater than many who scored for several hundred movies. Khayyam shines out with his majestic performance; his delicate yet intricate melodies haunting us not just from screen but also in our private moments of pleasure and pain. No wonder connoisseurs hold Khayyam in high esteem for his immaculate standards of musical harmony, as his creativity symbolises Victor Hugo’s irrefutable belief that “music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent”.

Khayyam was born as Sa’aadat Hussain in undivided Punjab in Rahon, a town in Nawanshahr District. As a boy Khayyam ran away to Delhi to learn music but was forced to return to complete his education. Khayyam then went to Lahore to learn music from the famous Baba Chishti.

He made his debut as Sharmaji of the Sharmaji-Varmaji composer duo with the movie Heer Ranjha in 1948. He went solo after his co-composer Rahman Varma went to the newly created Pakistan post partition. One of his earliest breaks was in the film Biwi in which the song “Akele mein wo ghabrate to Honge” sung by Mohammed Rafi was a huge hit. But he gained greater recognition from the film Phir Subha Hogi starring Raj Kapoor and Mala Sinha, in which songs written by Sahir Ludhyanvi and sung by Mukesh and Asha Bhonsle were set to tune by Khayyam, notable amongst them “Wo Subha Kabhi to Aayegi”, “Aasman Pe hai Khauda aur Zameen pe Hum” and “Chin-o-Arab Humara”.

The film Shola Aur Shabnam established Khayyam’s reputation as a great composer. The songs written by Kaifi Azmi are some of the greats of the Hindi Film Industry. From Shola aur Shabnam “Jaane kya dhhonti rehti hein ye aanken mujhmen” sung by Rafi and “Jeet Hi lenge Baazi Hum tum” sung by Lata and Rafi, from the Chetan Anand directed Aakhri Khat “Baharon mera jeevan bhi Sawaron” by Lata and “Aur kuch der theher,a ur kuch der na ja” by Rafi. Also, noticeable are songs from the film Shagun which had Khayyam’s wife Jagjit Kaur sing “Tum apna ranj-o-gham” and “Tum chali Jaogi”. From the film Lala Rukh “Hai Kali Kali ke lab par” sung by Rafi and from Footpath “Shyam-e-Gham ki Kasam” sung by Talat Mehmood. From Mohhabat Isko Kehte hein "Theheriye hosh mein aa lun to chaley jaiyega" by Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur.

The 70’s saw Khayyam team up with Sahir Ludhyanvi once again to work in the Yash Chopra-directed “Kabhi Kabhi”. The songs were super hits and showed Khayyam’s versatility with huge hits like “Kabhi Kabhi mere dil mein Khayal ata hai” (Sung by Mukesh), “Tere chehre se nazar Nahin hatti” (Kishore & Lata) and “Mein Pal do pal ka Shayar Hun” (Mukesh). The film Shankar Hussain had Rafi sing "Kahin ek Masum Nazuk si Lardki" and Lata render "Aaap yun Faaslon Se", both classic Khayyam songs.

Khayyam’s gave memorable music to the late 70’s and early 80’s was from Trishul, Thodi Si Bewafaai, Bazaar and Noorie. Khayyam also created music for the Kamal Amrohi directed “Razia Sultan” and his “Aye dil-e-nadan” sung by Lata capturing the mood beautifully. Khayyam was still to deliver his best and the opportunity came in Muzaffar Ali’s Umrao Jaan in 1981. He made Asha Bhonsle sing songs which are indisputably her best. “In Aankhon ki masti ke”, “Ye Kya Jagah hai doston” and “Dil Cheez kya hai” are evergreen.

Khayyam always preferred to work with the poets having strong background of poetry. That is the reason one finds poetry playing an equal role in Khayyam's compositions as the music or the singer. Khayyam prefers to give full freedom to the poets to express their views thereby making the expression of the songs more poetic and more meaningful.

Unfortunately, in his twilight years, the death of his grown-up son Pradeep and the subsequent illness of Jagjit have made him stay away from recording studios. A pity, especially as the music scene today needs someone like him more than ever before to cure it of its banality. However, even if he never picks up the baton again, it is certain that transcending all religious, cultural and geographical barriers, Khayyam’s music will live forever in the hearts of his admirers around the world.

The poetry, singing, and the music of this song are not from this world, they are from the heavens. ... The bewitching and divine tune is composed by Hemant Kumar and the subtle romantic poetry is from Kaifi Azmi which has been fantasised by the magical voice of Lata Ji for the movie Anupama .
I have added flute from another beautiful song - "Aisa Sama na Hota" composed by RD Burman ji.

Lata Ji has rendered a great contribution to the hindi music by singing old, rare and forgotten songs as Shraddhanjali, a tribute to old great singers. She has revived the interest of new generation in these songs. It is a priceless gift to Hindi music lovers. Kannan Devi Ji in movie Jawab (1942) sang it so beautifully and Lata Ji in her rendition has enhanced its charm. Mr. Kamal Dasgupta, a great composer of his time, has composed the subtle melody.

LYRICS WITH TRANSLATION

Ae Ishq humaiN barbad na kar, barbad na kar!

O! Passion, do not ruin me, ravage me

Ae Ishq na cheR aa aa key humaiN!

O! Love do not disturb me again and again

Hum bhuley huoN ko yad na kar!

Do not recall the forgotten ones

Peheley hi bohat nashad haiN hum!

I already so dejected,

Tu aur humaiN nashad na kar!

You should not make me more miserable

Qismet ka situm hi kum nahiN kuch!

The tyranny of destiny was enough

Ro ro kay duayin kurtey haiN!

And pray (for peace of mind) while weeping

Ankhon main tusawar, dil main khalish!

Imagination is my eyes, prick in mind

Sar dhundtey haiN anhein burtey haiN!

Thinking about you all the time, and lament

Ae Ishq ye kaisa rog Laga!

Jeetey hain na zalim murtey haiN!

Crazy like me, neither live nor die

In khuaboon se yuon azad na kar!

Do not free me from these dreams

Ae Ishq humaiN barbad na kar, barbad na kar!

Jis din se bundha hai dhyan tera!

From the day, I am possessed with your thought

Ghubiraey huey se rehetey hain!

I am passing through perplexed condition

Har waqt tasawar kar kar ke!

All the time possessed in your reflection,

Shurimaey huey se rehetey haiN!

I am in the condition of bashfulness

Kamlaey huey phulon ki tarha!

Pamaal na kar bedaad na kar

Do not destroy, do not torment me

Nayyara Noor was born in 1950 in Assam. Her family was a merchant class hailing from Amritsar who had settled in Guwahati in Assam State in the North-Eastern India. Her father was an active member of the Muslim League and in 1958, the family moved to Pakistan. As a child, Nayyara is said to have been inspired by the bhajans of Kanan Devi and Kamla as well as the ghazals and thumris of Begum Akhtar.

Although Nayyara had no formal musical background nor formal training, she was discovered by Professor Israr at the Islamia College in Lahore after hearing her sing for her friends and teachers at an annual dinner at the National College of Arts in Lahore in 1968. Soon thereafter she was asked to sing for the university's Radio Pakistan programs.

In 1971, Nayyara made her public singing debut in Pakistani television serials and then beginning with films like Gharana and Tansen. She has since sung ghazals penned by the likes of Ghaliband Faiz Ahmed Faiz.. She has won three gold medals in the All Pakistan Music Conference and a Nigar Award for best female singer. She has since performed at countless mehfils and mushairas having cemented a following among ghazal lovers in Pakistan and India. Her probably the most famous ghazal (a form of song in Urdu poetry) was ae jazba e dil gar mai chhon, written by Behzad Lakhnavi (1900-1974), a poet, scriptwriter and song writer of radio Pakistan, for which she won many rewards.

During her long singing career, she has sung ghazals, geeth, nazm and national songs. Sober and shy, she has always maintained her high singing standards from the beginning. She has also recorded hundreds of songs for the Pakistani films.

"She had beautiful dreams about her life. On a stormy night, she was raped and as a result she got pregnant. The family and the society rejected her and she decided to leave her home. She worked hard to survive this difficult life with her child. This marvellous song depicts the miseries of such a girl having no destiny".

I started loving this marvellous song from movie Badbaan 1954 (The mast), sung by Geeta Dutt and Hemant Kumar when I was in school. Lata ji through her Shraddhanjali has revived and enhanced its charm.... This immortal and matchless song was written by Indeevar Ji and composed by TIMIR BARAN, S K PAL. May god bless their souls for giving us such a priceless gem!

I have tried to compile the video the way I visualize this song on Madhuri Dixit. I hope you would like it.

Noor Jahan or Noor Jehan.. نور جہاں‎ (21 September 1926 – 23 December 2000) adopted stage name as Allah Wasai , a singer and actress in India and Pakistan. Her career spanned seven decades. She was renowned as one of the greatest and most influential singers of her time in South Asia and was given the honorific title of Malika-e-Tarannum ( ملکہ ترنم‎, the queen of melody).

Born into a Punjabi family of musicians, Noor Jahan was pushed by her parents to follow in their musical footsteps and become a singer but she was more interested in acting in films and graced the earliest Pakistani films with her performances.

Noor Jahan began to sing at the age of five or six years old and showed a keen interest in a range of styles, including traditional folk and popular theatre. Realising her potential for singing, her mother sent her to receive early training in classical singing under Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. He instructed her in the traditions of the Patiala Gharana of Hindustani classical music and the classical forms of thumri, dhrupad, and khyal.

At the age of nine, Noor Jehan drew the attention of Punjabi musician Ghulam Ahmed Chishti, who would later introduce her to stage in Lahore. He composed some ghazals, naats and folk songs for her to perform, although she was keener in breaking into acting or playback singing.

In 1935, K.D. Mehra directed Pind di Kuri in which Jahan acted along with her sisters. In 1942, she played the main lead in Khandaan. It was her first role as an adult, and the film was a major success. Khandaan's success saw her shifting to Bombay, with director Syed Shaukat Hussain Rizvi. She married Rizvi later the same year.

Jahan's last film in India was Mirza Sahibaan (1947). Noor Jahan sang 127 songs in Indian films and the number of talking films she made from 1932 to 1947 was 69 and the silent was 12. Fifty-five of her films were made in Bombay, eight in Calcutta, five in Lahore, and one in Rangoon, Burma.

She has recorded about 10,000 songs in various languages of India and Pakistan including Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and Sindhi languages. In 1957, Jahan was awarded the President's Award for her acting and singing capabilities.

LATA MANGESHKAR .. Chand Madham Hai Aasman Chup Hai .. Madhubala

2013-12-17T07:20:00.000-08:00

(LYRICS, TRANSLATION & VIDEO) I have compiled this video on Madhubala as this charismatic song deserves the most enchanting beauty. The song/ video portrays last days of her life.

"She is waiting and longing for her beloved on a dim moonlit night when everything is asleep. She is looking over the white clouds caressing the mountains in the far-away valley. She is requesting her Love to come back while she is young and passionate. She is waiting him anxiously all night till the twilight of the dawn appears".

Such songs are divine and are created in the heavens. The mesmerising composition by Madan Mohan, the magic of Sahir Ludhianvi's poetry, narrating deep angst, solitude and futile desire to meet her beloved, and sarswati Lata ji describing the agony, despair and anguish so beautifully in her miraculous and gripping voice, to make it one of the finest creations of Hindi songs of Bollywood for movie Railway Platform.

(LYRICS, TRANSLATION & VIDEO) A marvellous ghazzal of Nida Fazli with adorable lyrics, and a stunning composition by Anu Malik creating magic with the use of Sitaar and Flute for the movie Tammana.

Alka Yagnik has sung it so tenderly and passionately to make it one of her best songs.

Nida Fazli is a poet of various moods and to him the creative sentiment and inner urge are the sources of poetry. He thinks that the feeling of a poet is similar to an artist: like a painter or a musician. He got 2003 Star Screen Award for Best Lyricist for movie SUR.

The lyrics with possible meanings are:

رات بھر د یدہِ نمناک میں لھراتے رہے

Raat bar dedaa -e- namnaak main lehraate rahe
(The tears are floating in my wet eyes all -night
I felt you coming and going like my breath)

Shab ke jaage hue taarooN ko bhi neend aane lagi... haaye
(The stars which were awake all-night are feeling sleepy
Aap ke aane ki ek aas bhi ab jaane lagi
the hope, that you are coming, is also fading)

Khus thhe hum apni tamannaoN ka khawab aayega
(I was happy that my wishful-dream will come true,
NazeraiN neechi kiye sharmaaye hue aayega
he will come, eyes down with bashfulness)
KakoolaiN chehre pe bikhraaye hue aayega
(He will come with his curly hair on his face)

PattiyaaN kadhki to hum samje ke aap aa hi gaye
(Hearing the sound of leaves I thought You are approaching)

Sajidey masjood ke maabood ko hum paa hi gaye
(My prayers are fruitful and I found my Idol)

Shab ke jaage hue...

(When the dawn broke with the sun rose slowly)
Aye subah tu bhi jo aai to akeli aai
(O morning! you also came, but alone)

Meray mehboob meray hosh udane vaaley
(O my love! you make me so fervent)
Meray masjood meri rooh pe chhane vaaley
(My Idol! you have besieged my soul and mind)

Aa bhi jaa taake meray sajdhooN ko armaaN nikley
(Please reach me so that my prayers come true)
Aa bhi ja taake tere kadmooN pe meri jaan nikley
( Please come I want to die in your feet)

Shabke jaage hue taarooN ko bhi neend aane lagi.. haae
Aapke aane ki ek aas ab jaane lagi

Raat bar deedaa-e-namnaak main lehraate rahe

The Lyrics with Translation are:

یہ دل اور ان کی نگاہوں کے سایۓ

Yeh dil aur unki nigahoN ke saaye !

(This heart is under the shadows of His gaze)

mujhe ghair letey haiN baahoN ke ssaye

(The reflections of His tight hugs shroud me)

pahaadon ko chanchal kiran chumtii hai !

(The playful sun-ray is kissing the mountains)

hawaa har nadii kaa badan chumtii hai

(The Air is caressing the body of each river)

(From here to there, the shadows of Love are spreading)

lipattey ye pedoon se baadal ghanere !

(The dark clouds are embracing the trees)

yeh pal pal ujaaley, yeh pal pal andhere !

(In a moment it is bright, the next moment it is dark)

bahot thande thande hain raahoN ke saaye !

(The shadows of the passages are so chilly!)

dhadakte hain dil kitnii azaadiyon se !

(The hearts beating so freely here)

bahot miltey jultey haiN in vaadiyoN se !

(They resemble so much with these valleys)

mohabbat ki rangiin panaahoN ke saaye !

(The shadows of colourful shelters of Love!)

Jaidev Verma (3 August 1919-6 January 1987) was born in Nairobi and brought up in Ludhiana, India. In 1933, when he was 15 years old, he ran away to Bombay to become a film star. There, he acted in eight films as a child star for the Wadia Film Company. Unfortunately, he had to leave his film career abruptly and return to Ludhiana, due to his father's blindness, putting the sole responsibility of his family on his young shoulders.

JAGMOHAN - O Varsha ke Pehle Badal .. sursagar - A forgotten singer

2012-08-02T11:27:00.000-07:00

(LYRICS, TRANSLATION & VIDEO) Clouds, rain, saawan has great social and romantic significance in the sub-continent. They bring happiness and sadness in the life of the people.

Jagmohan -sursagar, has sung this geet like flowing water of Ganga with his marvellous singing has created a magic on Kalidas' poetry.

"The Lover requests the first-rain-clouds to go the village (Alkanagri) of his beloved and deliver the message- that he misses her. He requests the clouds, during the long journey through the valleys and rivers, they might face various attractions and hurdles, but they should continue their journey and deliver his message by raining (weeping)".

It is unbelievable that a composition of this calibre could be created in 40s with limited instruments. Only a genius like - Kamal Dasgupta could do it.

Kamal Dasgupta ji through his sheer talent, in this marvelous composition, has described the journey through the music. Jagmohan ji with his marvellous singing has created a magic on Kalidas' poetry. I took me months to match and create a befitting video on this great composition. By creating a video on his song, I am trying to bring the great composer and the singer into limelight and revive their grandeur.

O varshaa ke pehale baadal, mera sandesa le jaanaa......

Atal Himaalay pe chad ke, phir yuuN mudana Kailash ki ore

(Climb up on the unmoving Himalayas, and then turn towards Kailash)

Jyun chanda ko dekh ke pyaare, gaggan ko chumey jaaye chakor

(as if, O dear! the Chakor goes to kiss the sky after seeing the moon)

Alkaa mein phir dhundh usey tum, mera sandesa sunanaa

(and after finding her in Alkanagri, please give her my message (that I miss her a lot)

O varshaa ke pehale baadal, mera sandesaa le jaanaa .....

FEROZA BEGUM ..Tum Bhulaye na Gaye .. Nargis ..A rare sad forgotten song

2012-07-31T23:58:00.000-07:00

Firoza Begum .. Tum Bhulaye na Gaye .. Nargis by MukhtarSheikh

This is one of the loveliest Non-Film songs that one cannot get tired of listening it again and again. There is something special about it. Firoza Begum in her unique and beautiful voice has infused agony and angst into this engrossing composition of Kamal Dasgupta.

I have compiled this video on Nargis ji as only she can portray the agony in the song.

YOUTUBE

The Lyrics of the song with English Translation are:

Tum Bhulaye na Gaye

Tum bhulaye na gaye, haaye.. bhulaye na gaye!

(I could not forget you, ah.. could not forget you)

Saath ankhooN ne humara to diya!

(Although my eyes helped relieve my agony)

AnsuoN ne bhi sahara to diya!

(My tears also supported me)

Dag e dil phir bhi mittaye na gaye!

(Even then, the scars of my heart could not be erased)

Tum bhulaye na gaye!

Chand nikla nikla ...

(The Moon has risen.. risen....)

Chand nikla teri surat ley kar!

(the Moon has risen with your portrait in it)

Raat aaii to mosibat le kar!

(The night came with all the trouble)

Chand nikla teri surat ley kar!

Raat aaii to mosibat ley kar!

Gham ke badaal to hattaye na gaye!

(I could not wish away the clouds of gloom!)

Tum bhulaye nag aye!

Aag ahooN ne laga kar chhoRa!

(my sighs and moans have put me into the fire)

ArzoouN ko jala kar chhoRa!

(and this fire has incinerated all my wishes)

hum se yeh deep bhujaye na gaye!

(I could not put out these lamps)

Tum bhulaye na gaye, haaye bhulaye na gaye

Feroza Begum was born in Faridpur district, Bangladesh, in the 1930s. She was drawn to music in her childhood. She had no formal education in music, but she used to deliver songs on the megaphone listening to contemporary music. She got enormous support from her family and took part in school music competitions. In 1955, Feroza Begum made the most challenging decision in her life. She migrated from Dhaka to Kolkata to try a music career there.

Kamal Dasgupta, a great composer of that time, who was then based in Calcutta, trained her. Unfortunately people who contribute immensely to the arts are often quickly forgotten. This was the story of Kamal Dasgupta, who did so much for cinema of the subcontinent as a playback singer and composer.

In 1960, Kamal Dasgupta married Feroza Begum. She became so engrossed in family life that she could not continue music for six years. As a singer in Kolkata, Feroza Begum has had some spectacular achievements. An enlisted artist of Akashbani Kolkata, Feroza Begum used to render music genres such as Nazrul Sangeet, Rabindra Sangeet, thumri, dhadra, ghazals, bhajan, geet and folk songs. Nobody in those days in Kolkata was interested in Nazrul Sangeet.

Samay O Dheere Chalo by Bhupen Hazarika, Lata, Asha ... RUDAALI

2012-07-31T01:20:00.002-07:00

My video presentation is in remembrance of a great soul, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika who passed away on 5th of Nov. 2011. He was a great a composer who used folk music with a touch of the contemporary, a singer with a unique voice (Ganga tu Behti ho Kyun) and was a complete institution.

This song is about the TIME and has also been sung by Lata ji, Asha ji so beautifully for the movie Rudaali. Dr. Bhupen Hazarika in his unique voice imparts a profound effect. I have created videos on all the 3 songs.

"The video describes the mental condition of a woman who had an unforgettable but very short time with her Love and was separated. She does not know his where about and is out in search of him. She is requesting to the TIME to move slowly and complains to it for not giving enough in her life".
