MakerCast Giveaway - Laura Kampf

2016-10-25T01:56:00.000-06:00

As you may have heard I won the MakerCast Podcast Giveaway!!!

This is an amazing prize to win and I'm so grateful! The giveaway was HUGE! I'm not talking monetarily huge, I mean it was huge because of what was included! And not necessarily what was included but, who provided it!

To start off, Jon Berard is the creator and host of the Podcast for Makers known as MakerCast! He interviews a new "Maker" every week. These interviews are incredible and will leave you feeling/knowing that you can be doing so much more than what you are already doing. Yet it will make you think about your past and what got you to where you are today.

Jon decided to run a giveaway asking all of his past 60+ guests if they would like to contribute something to this giveaway. Needless to say plenty of them said YES! They sent Jon something to include in the giveaway and one lucky winner (me, and I mean LUCKY) received all of these items!

I promised to do a video of each of these Makers and why they are so amazing! To start off, I'm writing this blog post about an incredible Maker named Laura Kampf.

If you watch YouTube videos you need to watch/subscribe to Laura Kampf! You will enjoy her incredible artistic views on MAKING things.

I have included a link to the video she produced of this Mixtape she made for the Giveaway. Yes, you read that right, a "mixtape"! As in cassette tape - old school style. Take you back to Jr High / High School days! Because this is present day, I'm able to share this mixtape playlist with you in YouTube style. Below this build video is the playlist, in order, as if it were in your tape player. (minus the clicks and pop noises)

After you have watched the build video please head over to the MakerCast Podcast interview of Laura and listen to how amazing she is.

And here are a few pictures of the case, which is so strikingly beautiful! You can tell how much thought was put into this case and songs!

MakerFaire 2016

2016-10-17T00:35:00.002-06:00

I thought I had posted this one but it showed up as a draft! Here is the awesomeness that was the MakerFaire 2016!!!!!

Another year has passed and this year I wanted to take my whole family to the MakerFaire in San Mateo. Having 4 kids with 3 of them over the age of 2 meant we would need 5 plane tickets. That is way too much money!
So Brittney and I decided that her and I would just make the trip out and take Kacy our 7 month old daughter with us.
In order to save money we flew out Saturday morning at 6:30am MST. This allowed us to drop our luggage off at the hotel and walk over to the Faire just in time.
We walked over and had the stroller for Kacy. As we were waiting in line it started to rain! We got our wristbands and proceeded to go and wait for the gate to open.

Britt & Kacy ready for a Fun Weekend (I hope they had fun!)

Halloween 3D Pumpkin Carvings

2016-10-17T00:32:00.000-06:00

I posted these a long time ago but realized that the pictures were removed from my albums.

These are some of the pumpkins I have carved over the years! I love the fact that these pieces are temporary works of art.

Please enjoy these few pumpkin carvings... maybe I'll get one done this year too.

Music from Behind a Firewall with Access to the Internet... (hint: Port Forwarding)

2016-09-12T09:11:00.000-06:00

I like to stream my own personal music. I run my own website and wanted to stream my own music from the same server. In order to do that I needed to switch ports. Being that some places of employment block access to all ports except port 80 (http:) & port 443 (https:). I can't access the ports I need in order to control/stream my music. I use SSH to help me accomplish that task. I can "port forward" the ports I need. ssh -L3333:127.0.0.1:1234 username@serveraddress In this example 3333 is a "local" port. Meaning a local port on my work computer. 127.0.0.1 means when you connect to "serveraddress" use the local server. 1234 means the local server port to use. To give you an idea of what happens, when I connect using the ssh from above, I can then browse to my local machine "localhost:3333" which then forwards that port (3333) over to my "serveraddress" and connects to port 1234. Problem solved.

I realized I haven't blogged about this video! This was #50 in this addition process! 50 videos!

In this VLOG we got carpet installed. I spent the time soldering a new motor controller board for my CNC machine. The kids loved playing on the pad!

The siding guy finally finished! He's the one contractor who we never caught his name. He was very quite and very slow (in my mind).

We spent the night getting the floors ready for carpet. I installed a few more rows of laminate flooring. Brittney shakes it for the camera! She's so much fun!

I realized I never blogged this on when I published it. More siding got done. Mason talks to the camera and lets me know that Shadow caught a mouse!

Nov, 21st we installed the chair rail in Mason's room. They are getting ready to paint his ceiling and we needed the chair rail primed.

The floor didn't get grounded down due to our general telling us that he rented a grinding machine and he would come do it on Monday.

Kind of a lame video this week.

This is November 20, 2015.

Another day! Let's get on with this. We have enjoyed the process of the painting because we wouldn't have done it this way. It's interesting to watch things happen and hope that they have the same outcome even though you would have done it differently.

Just another day of siding being installed.

2015-11-18T22:37:00.000-07:00

Today I took down the back deck that didn't go anywhere.

I figured I would rather tear it down then let the general. No point in paying him for that, and I wanted to save the wood for some other projects I have in mind.

The siding guy showed up today and he looks like he takes his sweet time getting things done!

Enjoy!

2015-11-17T22:24:00.000-07:00

This is actually two days of work. November 16th and 17th. We took down the plastic so they can touch up the ceiling and get it ready for paint.

The trim work guys were amazing! There were 7 of them and they had 4 miter saws setup out front. They installed all of the trim in just 2 hours for the entire addition. I came home and was just amazed that they finished.

Hope you enjoy.

2015-11-13T22:27:00.000-07:00

I talk a little about the brick and grout as well as the stucco.

They plastered the ceiling and I wanted to get some really closeup video of the process.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #41

2015-11-11T20:28:00.000-07:00

They actually came out and "started" laying the shingles. I say "started" because apparently they didn't bring enough shingles. They have been working away on the inside getting the sheet rock mudded and taped.

The general has some really weird things that he is doing. I'm not sure why he chooses to do certain things. He's obviously too busy and I'm not one to keep hounding someone to do the work they have promised to do.

Brittney and I know how construction works. We are capable of doing this work ourselves. So it makes it hard to sit around and wait for somebody to do the work. Especially, when he doesn't do he work when it needs to be done.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #40

2015-11-09T12:09:00.000-07:00

We were told again that the siding and shingles would be installed today.

I set the cameras up to record the action! Little action was found.

We did however get the basement window put in! That had been a long time coming.

Thanks for following along.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #39

2015-11-06T23:41:00.000-07:00

Today was supposed to be siding and shingles. That didn't happen, as usual. I get really tired of a general contractor who just tells you what he thinks you "want" to hear!

I'm just glad that some progress happened!

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #38

2015-11-05T00:59:00.000-07:00

Today I set up the camera after talking with the brick mason for about 20 minutes.

We talked about his company, how long he's been a mason, I asked if he knew my old back door neighbor growing up (Gene Tidwell).

Because of my experience with the sheet rock guy the other day, I specifically asked him about doing he time-lapse video. He said that it wouldn't be a problem. Then I leave to work and he walks over and turns the camera off! ARGH!!! SO FRUSTRATING! Why not just tell me that you don't want it to record you!

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #37

2015-11-03T08:29:00.000-07:00

This was November 3, 2015. This is the second day of this crew hanging sheet rock. Some people don't want to be videoed! I understand his feelings but, I wish he would understand what I'm trying to do with the videos.

Brittney helps out with the VLOG today and takes you on a tour of the inside.

Ali, Kacy, and Shadow make their appearances today as well.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #36

2015-11-02T00:24:00.000-07:00

Today another crew showed up to do the sheet rock. They were both nice guys. One of them obviously didn't like being involved in a time lapse video!

They did a really good job of matching everything up and making it look good.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #35

2015-10-30T07:37:00.000-06:00

Today they prepared for sheet rock.

Because the trusses were wrong they had to shim them down. They also had to re-locate the electrical line that was in the existing wall.

At the start of the video I had mentioned how I would have ran the wire. At the end of the day I was upset when I came home to find what I did!

How is it that the general contractor doesn't check these things to make sure everything works. Why should I be the one to have to find these things and get them done right? Didn't I hire you to do this?

What am I paying you for?

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #34

2015-10-29T00:12:00.000-06:00

This was a pretty good day. They hung the sheetrock in the basement, office and loft. They also took down the kitchen wall.

There is a pretty funny part in this video which I'm still not sure how somebody does it!

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #33

2015-10-28T22:05:00.000-06:00

The work that happened today wasn't caught on camera due to not knowing what was going to happen.

As you can see in the thumbnail, I let the kids color on the wall before the tore it down! They had a fun time doing things that they know they aren't supposed to do.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #32

2015-10-27T00:03:00.000-06:00

This was October 26, 2015. It took some time to get the cameras setup to video this. I'm happy with the shots. They blew in the insulation because they don't have access to blow this in after the sheetrock gets installed.

We got Aaron on video telling us he would be cutting in Mason's window for his bedroom tomorrow. That would be October 27th. Needless to say even on November 4th we still don't have the window cut in.

This is really frustrating because we are paying him to do the work and it's not happening. It's frustrating because I know that I can do the work myself. But I'm paying him to do the work!

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #31

2015-10-26T00:21:00.000-06:00

Let's get these things out of the way so we can get back to some real work.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #30

2015-10-24T23:30:00.000-06:00

Let me apologize for how lame this video is.

I wanted to document a few things and talk about the progress.
