Rachel Weisz Biography

2010-11-23T11:09:00.000-08:00

Birthdate: March 7, 1971

Birthplace: London, England, UK

Sign: Pisces

Rachel Weisz was born a blend of Jewish, Hungarian, Austrian, and Italian descent. She was born into an intellectual family of an inventor and a psychoanalyst on March 7, 1971 in London, England. She is the first child of George Weisz and Edith Ruth whose relationship was strained throughout Rachel's early life.

Weisz, who was frequently rebellious, passed through a series of schools as a consequence. Despite her attempts to gain her parents' attention, her parents separated when she turned 15. By the time she finished her high school career at St. Paul's Girl's School in 1989, Rachel had her mind set on becoming an actress, a profession Edith encouraged after she began modeling at the age of 14. Rachel became an English Literature major at Cambridge University and became involved in various stage productions at the school. She founded a theater group called Talking Tongues, with her college friends. Through this drama troupe, the hazel-eyed beauty received her first accolade when she unexpectedly won a Guardian Student Drama Award at the Edinburgh Festival in 1991.

Rachel then headed to London to perform at the National Theatre where she managed to draw the attention of a stage director named Sean Mathias, who happened to attend their show. He cast her alongside Rupert Everett in his 1994 West End revival of Noel Coward's "Design for Living" at the Gielgud Theatre. Her portrayal of Gilda in this acclaimed play led to her being honored with the title of Most Promising Newcomer at Critics' Choice Circle Awards that same year.

Rachel smoothly crossed over to big screen productions, quickly becoming included in two movie projects of "Stealing Beauty" and "Chain Reaction." Both of these movies were released in 1996. Although "Reaction" enjoyed a fair amount of commercial success worldwide, it was "Beauty" that brought her to the world stage and earned her international notice. Her excellent work earned huge praise from critics and audiences and provided her greater access to enter the Hollywood film industry. She got enough buzz to earn her a female leading role in "Swept from the Sea" in 1997, which also starred Ian McKellen and Kathy Bates.

Her next picture, "The Mummy" in 1999, truly propelled her to the bigger recognition and to the forefront of the Hollywood scene. This film raked in more than $415 million worldwide. Rachel chose to return to the theater and acted in the adaptations of Tennessee Williams' "Suddenly Last Summer" and Neil LaBute's "The Shape of Things" before reuniting with the cast of "Mummy" to film its sequel, "The Mummy Returns" in 2001.

Weisz quickly emerged as one of the most sought female stars by the turn of the millennium. She later found herself involved in a series of high-profile film features including, "Enemy of the Gates" in 2001, "About a Boy" in 2002, and "Runaway Jury" in 2003. Rachel appeared opposite Keanu Reeves in "Constantine" and delivered a compelling performance as Ralph Fiennes' murdered wife in "The Constant Gardner." Rachel earned a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture and a 2006 SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Rachel had the highlight of her career when AMPAS granted her an Academy Award for Best performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role at the 2006 ceremony. She continued her extraordinary acting skills in "The Fountain" alongside High Jackman and Ellen Burstyn. She also gave voice to fantasy tale, "Eragon." She quickly followed that performance with a role in the holiday comedy, "Fred Claus" in 2007.

Rachel has signed on to several high-profile big screen features for the next two years. among the films are "My Blueberry Nights" in 2008, "The Brothers Bloom" in 2008, "The Lovely Bones" in 2009, and "Dirt Music" in 2009.

Although Rachel continues to be in demand as an A-list actress, she makes time to have a private life. Rachel first dated actor Ben Miller for two years. That relationship ended in 1993. She had a brief relationship in the mid-90s with Alessandro Nivola and then Neil Morrissey by 1998. Weisz has also been linked with celebrated film director Sam Mendes and eventually engaged to filmmaker, Darren Aronofsky. Weisz and Aronofsky welcomed the arrival of their first child, Henry Chance on May 31, 2006 in New York City.

Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai fight at award ceremony

2010-11-21T07:33:00.000-08:00

BollywoodWorld.com, Everybody knows that lovebirds Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai can never keep their eyes away from each other. The couple has always been seen extremely happy together on every occasion. But now, it seems that the long honeymoon of the couple is over and they are ready to enter the real conjugal world where some misunderstandings and sweet-bitter fight is normal.

The gorgeous ‘Bachchan bahu’ always gets excited whenever she is seen surrounded by her family. This has become a regular practice since her marriage to junior Bachchan. However, this over-the-top behavior of Ash has been noticed by her loving hubby too, and he is probably feeling embarrassed for the same. Recently, this became an issue between the couple and it led to a heated argument.

Ash and Abhi was on their way to an award ceremony and actor Kunal Kapoor was also along with them. Abhi asked her to be a bit soft in her expression as the actress was reportedly getting too loud and vocal. A subtle request from her hubby came instantly to keep her voice low. Gauging the sensitivity situation, Kunal preferred to leave the place to allow them to settle their spat.

The report further suggests that Ash failed to maintain low profile even after being warned by her hubby. So, Abhi took his beautiful wife to the hotel lobby and tried to have a word with her peacefully to clear his point. However, as per the sources, Abhi could not make her realize the issue and she started arguing at the top of her voice. At this, Abhi lost his temper and asked the personal security guards to take Ash to her room.

Well, we thought being a former Miss World, Aishwarya would behave in a more matured manner! Does it mean that the fighting days have started in the Bachchan family? We hope, Abhi manages to convince his intelligent wife and she calms down.

Madhuri Dixit Is All Praises For Ranbir Kapoor!

2010-11-21T07:20:00.001-08:00

Bollywood’s dancing diva Madhuri Dixit has been an eye candy of millions of fans all over India as well as overseas but there was hardly anyone, who could impress the ‘dhak dhak’ girl with his charms. She has ruled the industry with her killing smile and dance beats.

The 43-year-old actress left Bollywood in 2002 following her marriage to the US based doctor Shriram Madhav Nene. Since then, the dancing queen made her appearance in the movies just once with Aditya Chopra’s Aaja Nachle in 2007.

Now, Madhuri is back once again in her home land Mumbai and is in all praise for Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor. She has landed quietly in Mumbai airport on Tuesday and is here for judging the dance based reality show ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’. The Padma Shri winner actress seemed to be very impressed by the new talented boy of the industry.

She keeps a close watch on the Bollywood films even when she is in US and managing her family. Ranbir’s achievements in these three years have been highly appreciated by Madhuri and she said that he must be proud of this. She thinks Ranbir has achieved all these success on his own terms so he deserves to be appreciated.

Madhuri also seems to have liked Imran Khan and Priyanka Chopra for their performances. She has specifically praised Priyanka for her wonderful performance in Fashion.

Ranbir might have never actually boasted of his achievements but this adoration and appreciation from an actress like Madhuri Dixit is such a thing that he can really boast of!

Katrina Kaif and Deepika Fighting For Joker!

2010-09-26T04:03:00.000-07:00

Two leading ladies of Bollywood Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone are again pitted against each other! However, Ranbir Kapoor is not the issue this time. The actresses are fighting to be the leading lady of Akshay Kumar’s Joker.

Joker is an upcoming movie to be made jointly by Akshay’s Hari Om Productions and Farah Khan and Shirish’s Three’s Company. There is a buzz that two leading actresses are in the run to star opposite Akshay in this movie.

A source was quoted saying that both Katrina and Deepika think that they are doing Joker whereas the other one does not know about it. During the shooting of Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan, Kareena had a talk with Akshay regarding this and has taken it for granted that she will be starring in it.

The source added that the recent development is the inclusion of the other lady Deepika as she is best suitable for the script. So, this has left Akshay in a dilemma and he’s trying to find out the best way to inform one of the actresses to take a walk. This has become tougher for Akshay because of his close association with both the ladies and does not like to hurt feelings of either of them.

In the meantime, there was a buzz that Katrina had a fallout with Akshay and this has upset the actress very much. She wants to declare it clearly that she is still very close to the actor.

The co-producer Shirish opted to stay out of any controversy by saying that they are still hunting for the female lead opposite Akshay and have not finalized anyone yet. He added that they are considering the top actresses as it is a performance- oriented role and will make a final decision jointly with Akshay in a week.

Well, now its on Akshay whom he prefers to shed tears and who will enter happily in the Joker team!

Sushmita Sen and Wasim Akram break up their relation

2010-08-13T07:58:00.000-07:00

Beauty Queen Sushmita Sen has added one more break-up in the history of her relationships. This time the poor chap is Wasim Akram, the former Pakistani cricketer. The couple had a very short-lived relation of five months, which started following their appearance in dance reality show as judges.

They met in the Colors’ show Ek Khiladi Ek Hasina, which was however not their first meeting. Their first interaction was in Dubai in 2006. But, they came closer during co-judging the show and fell in love.

The decision of break-up is said to be a mutual one. The reason behind their separation is said to be the increasing closeness of Sushmita with Indian Premier League (IPL) chief Lalit Modi.

In October 2009, when Wasim lost his wife Huma, he found support from Sushmita and fell for her. The long distance relationship between them is also said to be one of the reasons of this break up. Wasim was in Pakistan most of the time and Sushmita is not comfortable with settling down in Pakistan. After mutual discussion, the couple decided to settle down in Dubai but after sometime the lady showed her unwillingness to move to Dubai also. After having several arguments on the issue of settlement, they finally decided to break up.

Well, considering the relationship history of Sushmita, the news does not surprise anyone!

Who Says Another Girl Won’t Complete My Family? – Kajol

2010-08-13T07:54:00.000-07:00

As motherhood approaches again Kajol is not praying for a son. She is equally enthused by the idea of another girl child in her family. “I’m just hoping for a healthy happy baby and a healthy happy mama to look after the baby. I’ve a wonderful daughter. How can I say no to another girl just like her? I don’t believe I need a son to complete my family. My sister Tanissha and I made quite a complete family. And so did my mom (Tanuja) and her sister (the late Nutan).”

And for those who are hoping to see more of Kajol on screen after she becomes mother for a second time, there’s disappointment in store. Kajol doesn’t intend to increase her volume of work after motherhood. “I’ve worked a lot. I enjoy doing just 1-2 films a year. I don’t think I want to do more than that. I’m happy with my pace of work. If I do too many films people would get bored of me.”

There is no plan of a comeback after motherhood. “It all depends on how I feel after I have my baby. I refuse to take a decision here and now. It’s my prerogative to do what I like. I firmly believe women should have babies when they can take care of them. As simple as that. I want my baby to arrive and I want to watch him or her grow. I took time to have a second baby because I wanted to give myself fully to motherhood. I refuse to miss out on the joy of watching my child grow for anything in the world.”

Madhuri Dixit, the evergreen and once sought after Bollywood actress is presently pretty upset. She wishes to re-connect with her fans via social media network, but can’t. She is finding complexity to confirm her actual identity in the very popular social networking site, ‘Twitter’.

As per report, Madhuri had joined Twitter on May 30 this year. The verification is taking a lot of time and this is what is both upsetting and annoying her.

She contacted the headquarters in order to get hold of the fake accounts. She says that she would never want her fans to be disappointed by talking to her fake identities. The actress has submitted all the requisite credentials needed for confirmation.

The verification is taking longer than usual, since she’s in the USA.

Imran Khan said NO to Anil Kapoors’s Offer

2010-08-05T12:46:00.000-07:00

Sonam Kapoor and her sister Rhea who produces Aisha offered the male lead to Sonam’s pal Imran Khan. At that time Imran and Sonam were already doing I Hate Luv Storys and had become great buddies. Naturally Sonam presumed Imran would happily do her home production.

But the Kapoor family was in for a shock when Imran declined the offer pleading there was not much for him to do.

Anil admits Imran was indeed the first choice for Abhay Deol’s role.

Says the candid star-actor, “Rhea and Sonam did send the script over to Imran. I don’t know why he didn’t do it. Maybe, he was wary of a script that was named after the heroine. But Abhay is the perfect choice”.

After Imran’s refusal, Anil immediately commanded the Aisha team to rechristen the film. “I told them no hero would take a film seriously if it is named after the heroine. I ordered them to call the film ‘Production No. 3’ not Aisha. I was different I did so many heroine-centric films like Beta with Madhuri Dixit and Lamhe with Sridevi. Even Mr. India was more Sri’s picture although it was our home production.”

Anil is very proud of his daughters for having managed Aisha all on their own. “I did nothing. I gave Sonam and Rhea a free hand. I was there to help them with inputs. But Aisha is completely their baby. Now we’re planning 2-3 new productions. One of them would definitely have Sonam in it.”

Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor on the lookout for their Dream Home

2010-08-05T12:39:00.000-07:00

The flats on top floor of the apartment that is on construction just opposite Fortune Heights have nothing much to do with the whopping prices of real estate properties in Bandra west. It is the apartment owned by Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor on the tenth floor of Fortune Heights that has set the prices of flats in the upcoming multistoried building on fire.

The office of Saif’s production house too is on the second floor of Fortune Heights. The flats in the building overlooking Bollywood’s celebrity couple’s living room have been a treasure trove for the wily builder.

After Saif had bought the penthouse, the area became a hotspot in the real estate market of Bandra. The most celebrated actor had selected this apartment after much toing and froing. Adding to the real estate prices in the area was Saif’s ladylove Kareena’s arrival in the apartment. The buzz around is that the couple is on the lookout for a dream home again.

Bebo said that Saif and she are happy at their present address. They are in love with the vibe of their apartment in Fortune Heights. She feared that with the rise of other buildings around, their privacy may be at stake. That is why they intent to buy a bungalow in and around Bandra. She added that an English-styled villa is Saif’s dream home, but it is difficult to find that kind of home. Or else, the couple would make a happy nest of the topmost apartment in the building opposite.

2010-08-05T12:19:00.000-07:00

Walking the most trodden path to stardom that is on-screen kissing is not Sonam Kapoor’s cup of tea. She turned her back when asked to smooch Shahid Kapoor as required by the script for a scene in Mausam during the Scotland schedule. It is in buzz that her refusal to lock lips with the Bollywood hunk raised a ruckus on the sets of the movie.

Sonam was taken by surprise when the film’s director and Shahid’s dad Pankaj Kapoor asked her to do a lip-locking scene with her co-star Shahid. She said that she was not informed of such a scene when she had signed the movie and the script had been narrated to her. “Sonam was taken aback when the director told her about it. She flatly refused”, a source from Mausam’s unit revealed.

The unit added that when the situation went haywire and the shooting took a pause because of Sonam’s determination not to change her mind, Pankaj went ballistic and called her dad Anil Kapoor to save the situation. But, the Bollywood lass stood her ground.

Wedding Bells For Vivek Oberoi on October 29

2010-08-03T01:51:00.000-07:00

Vivek Oberoi who has over the years acquired the reputation of being quite a ladies man has finally decided to tie the knot. Yes, the self-proclaimed flirt is getting married. The wedding, according to very reliable sources, is on October 29, two months after Vivek’s 34th birthday.

The details about the bride are not yet known. But it is an arranged marriage for Bollywood’s resident Casanova who, in his words, likes to flirt with anyone in a skirt. Vivek’s bride-to-be has been chosen by his parents Suresh and Yashodhara.

In the past Vivek has dated some of the most beautiful women in the entertainment industry including Aishwarya Rai. Before that Vivek dated model Gurpreet Gill for four years before abruptly calling off the relationship.

Since then the Oberoi scion has been linked with various girls.

The most recent link-up was with his Prince co-star Neeru Bajwa.

When asked about Neeru Vivek had said, “That’s all rubbish. I’ve been linked up with 50 girls in last four years. At least 10 of them I’ve never met. No wonder my mother is searching for a girl for me. She wants me to settle down”.

On Saturday when asked about the wedding Vivek hastily begged off saying he was busy and would talk ‘later’.

After the honeymoon, maybe?

Shahid – Kareena Kapoor’s ‘Milenge Milenge’ destined to flop

2010-07-24T04:22:00.000-07:00

As per the promos running across channels, the makers of this film are hell bent on bringing Shahid and Kareena back together with its ‘Forgive and Forget’ theme.
Whether they will ‘meet’ in ‘real’ life is their personal call but will the film ‘meet’ people’s expectations?

Our in-house expert and very own celebrity astro numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi unravels the mystery –
“The title ‘MILENGE MILENGE’ adds up to Number 52 ( 7 ) – this octave of Number 7 is an unfortunate number. It is symbolized by the signs of revolution, upheaval, strife, failure, prevention and is not a fortunate number if it comes out in calculations relating to future events” explains Bhavikk.
He continues “ No wonder the film took so long in the making and could not be released even after it was ready for a while ”.

“About the much talked about pair, Shahid is running in his 30th year ( 25th February 1981 ) which is just about average phase for him while Kareena who’s also of the same age is in much better position, luck-wise ” says Bhavikk.

“But their combination being Numbers 3 (Jupiter) and 7 (Neptune), is not good at all and hence their ‘chemistry’ will fail to light up the screen on fire. With such a basic ingredient (a must for any love story) lacking in the movie, there is absolutely no chance of this film working at the box office ” predicts Bhavikk before signing off.

Rani Mukherjee speaks about her favorite past time

2010-07-15T10:38:00.000-07:00

No doubt Rani Mukherjee, Tinselville’s Queen Bee, has seen a lot of ups and downs, highs and lows in her career right from her debut making film Salim Aftab’s ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat’ to her last released Yash Raj film’s ‘Dil Bole Haddippa’, after having overcome all the hazards and the hurdles of her personal life too.

Needless to add that she has come out unscathed, but not unhurt! Yet one fails to notice any traceable scars of the same on her ever – smiling countenance. So full of beans and tinged with laughter, Mademoiselle Rani Mukherjee just freaked out while dissecting her favorite past time, her leisure time queries endowed with her own brand of Bengali sense of humor. Shaheen Raaj caught up with the Bong Babe Rani Mukherjee in a surprise encounter.

Describe a typical leisure day in your over busy schedule and hectic life?
Believe me I make my family go bonkers on my typical leisure day. As I eat their brains more than my breakfast, lunch or dinner. I behave like a typical brat, making my mom go wild and wild, running around in circles with a stick in hand until she is totally exhausted.
The poor lady tries her best to please me, but the prankster that I am, I literally make life hell for her and then of course I make up for my mischievous behavior in the evening by doing everything for her that pleases her no end. And that is either by cooking her favorite dish of Maacher Jhol at home or taking her out for, believe it or fall dead, a candle light dinner for just the two of us.

What is your idea of unwinding, de – stressing and relaxing in your leisure time?
The word ‘relaxation’ is certainly not a part of my Bengali dictionary. You see I don’t believe in endorsing the Oxford dictionary. But jokes apart I am such a restless creature ‘Main ek minute ke liye bhi chain se nahin baith sakti hoon’. And you really want to know how I de – stress myself? Simple! By giving tension to others! As in this regard my formulaic belief is that ‘Tension lene ka nahin, tension dene ka kya!’

But yes when sometimes I really feel like unwinding myself then I definitely prefer going away on a long drive all alone or else I also prefer to hide myself in a solitary corner of a deserted beach or an unfrequented seaside.
Do you have any specific and a favorite place to hang out and spend time with your closest friends on a weekend?
Actually speaking I love going to pubs and discotheques with my friends on a weekend. No specific choice, Koi bhi chalta hai yaar! But more than that, we all have even greater fun in some or the other friend’s house by partying hard and letting our hair down or just by freaking out without a care in the world till the wee hours of the morning.

Are there any special interests that you pursue in your leisure time?
Can you beat it? I spend all my spare time in devising brand new strategies of playing pranks not only on my family members but also my co – stars, my unit hands, my friends and sometimes even my fans. I know I have to get serious in life someday, but ‘jaldi kya hai kabhie na kabhi ho jaaoongi serious yaar’.
Do you really feel like spending a lot of money on yourself in your leisure time? And then do you feel guilty later on thinking of the entire sum spent on pampering yourself?

Now this is one area where I am really serious as I just love to indulge in pampering, with gifts galore, not only for my kith and kin but also my entire khandaan, my friends, my co – stars but certainly not my fans. Come on be sensible how can I please and pamper millions and millions of them. ‘Mujhe apna diwala nikalna hai kya?’ So you see when I travel abroad I go with one suitcase and come back with the amount of luggage that the whole Indian army would fail to cart.

And then would you please be kind enough to tell me why should I feel guilty about it? ‘Kyoonki whatever I earn, mujhe apni sasural mein thode hi le jana hai.’ Yet sometimes I become really sad because no one ever seriously thinks of pampering me yaar.

What do you like doing best in your leisure time and why? Does it mean just kicking off your shoes and relaxing or doing something more adventurous?
Have you gone mad! Why should I kick off my shoes? ‘Koi chura le jaayega toh! Okay! Okay! Jokes apart! In my leisure time I really love to help my mom that is after having totally harassed her. And I really became serious since my mother started taking my tips for my own bridal trousseau. Yeah! I think it’s high time I got married to a man of my choice and of course my best friend. No, I won’t tell you his name as yet but all of you can keep guessing. Anyway my mom is after my bridal preparation since I was that high. On the other hand I keep telling her that I would love to be adventurous. Yeah! I always tell her ‘Main sher ka shikar karna chahti hoon!’ But instead of being serious about it she just retorts, ‘Tu sher ka shikar kya karegi, sher tujhe hi kha jayega’.

What are the craziest things that you have ever done in your leisure time?
Now that was really crazy. I once went to a nearest cinema hall, clad in a burkhaa {a veil worn by Muslim women}, sat with the frontbenchers and scared the daylights out of them by unveiling myself during the intermission. Now it’s an altogether different story that I had to run for my own life once they had came out of their own dazedly shocking state.

And now finally tell us something more about your leisure time like how do you spend it while traveling abroad or within India?
I love traveling abroad. ‘Kya Karoon?’ All my directors normally picturise all my songs outside only. So do I have any choice left? But yes I do make it a point to travel within India too that is with my family sometimes mostly coinciding with my annual holiday or sometimes even to escape from the Moviedom’s humdrum routine. You know ‘Kabhie kabhie main in sabse bahut jyada bore ho jaati hoon’ just as I am bored right now by talking so much. ‘Magar kuch alag baatein hui, accha laga, okay bye! Ciao!

10 crore offered for Aamir Khan’s Peepli Live

2010-07-08T11:09:00.000-07:00

Aamir Khan seems to now be the most guaranteed good returns brand in India. Having super bumper hits like Ghajini and 3 idiots under his belt, his produced movies too, carry a stamp of quality. So it is no wonder that a TV channel has offered his soon to release film Peepli Live a whopping Rs.10 for the satellite rights. Now the amount in itself is much higher than the actual cost of the film including its expected spending on promotion and release.

Our sources inform, “Despite Aamir Khan not acting in the film, it has become hot property. But then the high price offered for TV rights is not merely because the film is produced by Aamir Khan. The channel has given such a wonderful offer to a non-star cast film after they saw the film.”
Our source further adds that Aamir Khan is also contemplating adding a song for the end credit titles of the film.

Saif Ali Khan loses 9 Kilos, Gets a new look

2010-06-26T07:17:00.000-07:00

Saif avoided cameras and paparazzi pictures until his departure to Morocco this week in order to avoid giving away his Agent Vinod look.

But man proposes, Aamir disposes. Aamir insisted that Saif make it to the party at his home last weekend, thereby blowing the whistle on Saif’s carefully-concealed look.

On the eve of his departure to Morocco for the shooting of his second home production Agent Vinod, Saif Ali Khan, completely revamped his look and went into hiding until he left the country.

According to close friends, Saif was apprehensive about the exposure of his special makeover in as Agent Vinod. He has lost oodles of weight changed his hairstyle, and redesigned his entire body language to play a lean spy.

A friend of Saif says, “If Shahid Kapoor in his dad’s film Mausam has modelled his look on Tom Cruise in Top Gun, Saif’s role model for Agent Vinod is Matt Damon in Bourne Identity.”

The special hair styling done by Aalim Hakim, clipping off the long tresses that Saif was lately seen sporting, had been planned for six months. Saif wanted to delay the haircut until the final moment before his departure to Morocco.

Besides that Saif has been working out frantically and toning his muscles to look sinewy, agile and panther- like.

While Saif remained inaccessible for any questions on his makeover for Agent Vinod (he probably thinks even talking about it would invite copycats) his ladylove Kareena Kapoor, willingly and proudly spilled the beans. “Saif has never looked cooler. He has lost 9 kilos in three months. He’s all toned and rippling muscles now. He had long hair for so long that I had forgotten how dashing he looks in cropped hair. Saif has got his hair cropped really short, that’s all I can tell you about his Agent Vinod look. He got it done a couple of days back. Since then he was reluctant to step out of his house. ”

So frightened was Saif of revealing his new look that he refused to show it even to his own parents. Only Kareena had the privilege of seeing Saif’s madeover avatar. Until Aamir’s party.

“And that too only because I’ll see how he looks anyway because I’m his co-star,” laughs Kareena, adding that her look in Agent Vinod would also be unique.

“Aki Nirula is doing my look for Agent Vinod. I don’t think I’ve ever looked the way I would in Agent Vinod. As for Saif, he looks like a Hollywood star for the film. I can’t take my eyes off him.”

Angelina Jolie – Biography

2010-06-17T09:50:00.000-07:00

Angelina Jolie – Biography
Personal details
Name: Angelina Jolie
Born: 4 June 1975 (Age: 34)
Where: Los Angeles, California, USA
Height: 5′ 7″
Awards: Won 1 Oscar and 3 Golden Globes, nominated for 1 BAFTA
Biography:
while most Hollywood stars do everything they can to appear cool, professional and squeaky-clean, diligently concealing all their nasty little secrets, Angelina Jolie appears wholly unconcerned by controversy. Ever-keen to talk about her breakdowns, her disorders, her fantasies and her world-famous penchant for S&M, many would say she’s built a career on titillating public confession. But she’s also an increasingly fine and award-winning performer, her Oscar for Girl, Interrupted being only the first in a string of prestigious honours. Onscreen, as in bed, she is a risk-taker, and perhaps deserves to be seen as the spiritual sister of such greats as Streep, Pfeiffer and Lange. Beyond this, her international efforts on behalf of children and refugees have made her the most public-minded superstar since Audrey Hepburn.

She was born Angelina Jolie Voight in Los Angeles, on June 4th, 1975 – her name meaning Pretty Little Angel. Her father, Jon, was already an established superstar, having topped the bill in such classics as Midnight Cowboy and Deliverance. When Angelina was 2, he’d scoop the Best Actor Oscar for Coming Home. By then though, he’d already split from her mother, the part-Iroquois actress and model Marcheline Bertrand (now Angelina’smanager), who’d moved with Angelina and her brother James to the East Coast – to the Palisades, New York, to be more precise.

Living here, Jolie was a happy child. She collected snakes and lizards – her favourite lizard being named Vladimir, and her favourite snake Harry Dean Stanton – and, oddly, like many females of her age, she had a major crush on Mr Spock. She would wear glittery clothing, including sparkly underwear, and flounce around, already performing, keen to make people laugh, to make them like her. She was a member of the Kissy Girls, who hunted boys down and kiss them till they screamed – until the school was forced to call the parents and the gang broke up. Marcheline would take the kids to the movies often, and Jolie claims this is where she got the notion to be an actress – not from her uncle, Chip Taylor (an actor and composer), not from her godmother Jacqueline Bisset, and definitely NOT from her father, though at age 7 she did appear in Lookin’ To Get Out, a movie about inveterate gamblers, co-written by and starring Jon Voight.

When Jolie was 11, her mother moved the family back to Los Angeles. They had already moved often, making the young girl feel constantly uprooted “I always dreamed”, she says “of having an attic of things that I could go back up and look at”
Now Angelina decided she wanted to act and, as ever jumping in at the deep end, enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, where she trained for two years, appearing in several stage productions.
As a pupil at Beverly Hills High School, she was not alone in her cinematic ambitions. But she certainly FELT alone in the midst of all those good-looking, pampered children, children who teased her mercilessly for wearing braces and glasses and being so painfully skinny. Unlike the other parents, Marcheline was not rich – so Angelina also had to seek her clothes at thrift stores like Aardvark. Her confidence received a further battering when her attempts at modelling proved fruitless. She never got picked – too short, too thin, too fat, too scarred.
. Scarred – yes. Perhaps it was the many moves, maybe it was to do with her father, a lonely, detached figure who did not want to live with his family (Angelina always feared she would be like that herself). Maybe it was the relative poverty, or the taunting, or the way she felt that -with her big eyes, big lips, big everything – she looked like a muppet. But Angelina had come to hate herself, to feel absolutely worthless. She felt unworthy, didn’t like to be touched (she still has this problem sometimes).

So, like too many young girls, she started to cut herself. At 14, she dropped out of acting classes and began an existence of fast-living and active self-loathing. She wore black, dyed her hair purple and went out slam-dancing with her live-in punk boyfriend. They experimented heavily in S&M, Angelina once asking him to draw a blade along her jawline (the scar is now faint, but still there).
At 16, her relationship ended. She moved to an apartment opposite her mother and went back to theatre. Now committed to acting, her first role was, unsurprisingly, as a German dominatrix. She began to learn from her father, noticed how he would watch people, talk to them, become like them. She stopped fighting with him so much too, realising that they were both “drama queens”. For his part, Voight noticed her talent, being moved to tears by her reading of the part of Catherine in A View From The Bridge.

With the braces and glasses gone, she became a model too, working in Los Angeles, New York and London. She also appeared in the video for Meat Loaf’s Rock’n'Roll Dreams Come Through – she’d later turn up in promos for Lenny Kravitz, Lemonheads and The Rolling Stones. Her confidence rose, though it would often plummet back down. She tells a story of how once she was so down she actually tried to hire a man to kill her. Being a compassionate sort of assassin, he told her to think about it for a month. Obviously, she didn’t call him back.
Jolie had appeared in five of her brother’s student films, made while he attended the USC School of Cinema (he was now known as James Haven), but her movie career proper began in 1993, when she starred as Casella “Cash” Reese, alongside Elias Koteas and Jack Palance in Cyborg 2.

Here, a near-human robot-thing, she was designed to seduce her way into the HQ of her creators’ rivals and blow up. Already, her sexual charisma had been noted. Next came Hackers, where she met her first husband, Jonny Lee Miller, then riding high after his performance as Sick Boy in Trainspotting. Miller played a computer whizz-kid on the wrong side of the law, trying to save the world from a swine intent upon unleashing a vicious virus, while being pursued by the Secret Service. Jolie was Acid Burn, one of his team.
The pair fell for each other big-time and were married, Jolie possibly looking for some kind of stability in her life. Now began her explicit openness in the press, as she told lurid tales of their sexual exploits. “You’re young, you’re drunk, you’re in bed, you have knives; shit happens”, she said jokingly. It was also announced that, when getting married, Jolie had worn black leather pants and a white shirt with Miller’s name scrawled across the back in her own blood (well, who else’s blood would she use?). In interviews, Jolie explained that her interest in blood and death was of long standing. She not only collected knives, she said, but had a fascination with mortuary science and, as a child, had dreamed of becoming a funeral director.

Less Maude than Harold, then.
Now the roles started coming fast and thick. Jolie starred with David Duchovny in the nasty, stylish thriller Playing God (she’d later date her other co-star, Timothy Hutton). Then, in the road-movie Mojave Moon, she was a youngster, named Eleanor Rigby, who falls for Danny Aiello, while he takes a shine to her mother, Anne Archer. In Foxfire, she was one of a group of teenage girls who kill a teacher who harasses them, then gradually go wholly out-of-control. Directed by Annette Haywood-Carter, this was very much a girl-thing, as was Jolie’s next release, the TV movie True Women, a Herstorical romantic drama set in the West, based on the book by Janice Woods Windle.
As a child, Jolie had always been encouraged to express her feelings, and now it really began to work for her. In biopic George Wallace, she played the wife of the segregationist Governor of Alabama who was shot and paralysed while running for President.

This starred Gary Sinise and was directed by John Frankenheimer, but she more than held her own, picking up a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination. Next came Gia, another biopic, this time of Gia Carangi, a lesbian supermodel from the Seventies. This was crammed with sex, drugs and fearsome emotional drama, as Carangi crashed, burned and was eventually taken by AIDS. For the second consecutive year, Jolie won a Golden Globe, and was nominated for an Emmy. At the Golden Globes, by way of celebration, she jumped into a swimming-pool, clad in a hand-beaded Randolph Duke gown.
The emotional extravagance of these parts, added to her own confusion and pain, made living with Jolie an impossibility. She was breaking down and Miller could take no more. The couple split, Jolie living alone in Manhattan, getting her head together, and attending film classes at NYU. Now notorious for her candid quotes, her name stayed in the papers. The sexuality of Gia had got tongues wagging, and Jolie had made them wag some more by admitting to bi-sexuality, and a relationship with actress Jenny Shimizu.
Now came the comedy-drama Pushing Tin, about two air traffic controllers who engage in macho conflict. John Cusack was one, the other was Billy Bob Thornton, acclaimed director, writer and star of Sling Blade. Jolie played Thornton’s wife, an extremely sexy sort who sends the guys crazy and sleeps with Cusack. The film was excellent. More importantly for Jolie, she fell for Thornton, 15 years her senior, who proceeded to dump his longtime girlfriend Laura Dern. The pair became infamous for their salacious quotes, Thornton admitting that he liked to wear Jolie’s underwear, even to work, as it made him feel close to her. Actually, their quotes were often rude, but clearly loving.

Jolie was about to become a huge star. Winona Ryder has claimed that her character in Girl, Interrupted could have been her as a young girl. But Jolie’s character, Lisa Rowe – insanely ebullient then horribly depressed, hating but needing some form of structure to her life, even an institution – really WAS Jolie. Stealing the show entirely, she won the Oscar, and herein lies a sweet tale. At the time filming Original Sin down in Mexico, Jolie flew to the Oscar ceremony (she’d attended before, age 12 and all glammed up in lace and pearls, with her dad), won, then flew straight back, arriving at 4.30 am and going straight to sleep. Suddenly, she was awoken by a mariachi band, hired by co-star Antonio Banderas and director Michael Cristofer. Stumbling from her trailer, she was handed a single rose by every member of the crew, many of whom, along with Cristofer, had worked on Gia and, remembering her at her lowest ebb, wished to recognise this moment of triumph. In the press, meanwhile, her victory was quickly overshadowed by freakish reports that she was having an affair with her own brother. They must have assumed she’d try anything once. This is a big part of the Jolie phenomenon – she has a searing reputation for being sexually voracious and promiscuous, yet says she’s slept with only a tiny handful of people.
After Girl, Interrupted came the psycho-thriller The Bone Collector, where she aided a bedridden Denzel Washington in his pursuit of a killer, then Gone In 60 Seconds, where Jolie played Sarah “Sway” Wayland, ex-girlfriend of super-car-thief Nicolas Cage.
She didn’t have much to do but be charismatic, which she managed with ease – though she did look thin and drawn, something noted by Cristofer when Jolie moved directly from Gone In 60 Seconds on to the set of Original Sin. Based on Cornell Woolrich’s Waltz Into Darkness, this would be a steamy bodice-ripper where she played a mail order bride for Banderas’ coffee planter in 1900s Cuba, a bride who turns out to be dominating, manipulative and thoroughly untrustworthy. It was a wonder he didn’t mail her straight back.

. Next would come the big one – Tomb Raider. To play videogame heroine Lara Croft, Jolie had to master a Brit accent and upper-class manners, plus kick-boxing, street-fighting, yoga, ballet, car racing and dog-sledding. Few actresses have the outlandish features and sheer physical power to pull off such a character, but Jolie managed it with some aplomb as Croft criss-crossed the globe, trying to prevent the Illuminati from using a magic triangle to control Time Itself. She would revisit the part in 2003 with the superior Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life. Here a Chinese crime boss and evil mastermind would attempt to unleash a deadly plague that, for some reason, chose to remain in Pandora’s Box when all the other bad stuff sprang forth. Naturally, only Lady Lara Croft (in the original her aristocratic dad was played by Jon Voight) can save the day. Once again, Jolie impressed with her straight face, dry wit and comically unbreakable British resolve – she certainly gained more prestige than she would have done had she instead taken the role in Charlie’s Angels eventually filled by Lucy Liu.

Before the sequel, though, would come Life Or Something Like It where she played a Seattle TV reporter seemingly ambitious beyond her abilities. Stuck in a love triangle with a baseball pitcher and a cameraman, she’s informed of her own imminent death by a street preacher and must get her life in order before popping her clogs. It doesn’t sound good and it wasn’t, Jolie hardly being tested by such weak material.
Personally speaking, this was a hard time for Angelina. Having in 2001 adopted a Cambodian boy named Maddox, and having made clear her sympathy for nations much poorer than her own, she was made a Good Will Ambassador for the United Nations. It was a role she took seriously, visiting Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Pakistan and the Western Sahara. She examined first-hand the plight of refugees from Thailand and Chechnia, called for peace in Sri Lanka and pledged $5 million to a wildlife sanctuary in Cambodia (having been paid $12 million for Tomb Raider 2, this was something she could well afford).
Unfortunately, her relationship with Thornton did not survive this burst of activity. He, she later claimed, was more interested in his career (he was at the time concentrating on his music) and left her and Maddox to go out on tour. The couple would officially split up in May 2002 and divorce a year later, after almost exactly three years of marriage. And the split would bring about another when father Jon Voight used TV interviews to reach out to a daughter he said had “serious mental problems”. Angelina did not appreciate his words or tactics.

Having worked extensively in the UK on the Tomb Raider movies, Jolie would buy herself a house in Buckinghamshire and often be seen out with former husband Jonny Lee Miller. Despite giving much of her time to the UN, she was still fairly prolific on-screen. After Tomb Raider 2 would come Beyond Borders, long delayed after the sacking of Kevin Costner (for being too demanding) and the subsequent departure of Oliver Stone. Interestingly, the movie would see her as the daughter of a rich industrialist, meeting a renegade doctor (Clive Owen replacing Costner) and, inspired by his impassioned desire to save lives, helping him do just that in war-torn Africa and beyond. There were clear parallels with her own life.

2004 would bring a welter of work and another tumult of rumours. Onscreen, she’d open the year with Taking Lives, playing an intuitive American detective called up to help Montreal cops track down a serial killer. Through a strange and near-psychic process (as well as dogged police work), she reveals that the murderer, a major self-loather, has been offing people of gradually increasing age, stealing their identities and thereby living a series of different lives. Artist Ethan Hawke is able to sketch the killer, but will that do any good? The movie was quite complex, full of clues, shocks and sly cheats, but it was rather overshadowed by the break-up of Hawke’s marriage to Uma Thurman. Naturally, rumours abounded that Jolie was the scarlet woman – in fact, it was model Jen Perzow.
Next came Shark Tale, an animation where Will Smith’s funky fish took credit for the accidental death of the son of shark mobster Robert De Niro.

Now famous, Smith would attract the amorous, glamorous Angelina (a fish called Lola, of course) who’d tempt him to betray his long-time gal Rene Zellweger. Critics would complain that the film’s welter of references to the likes of Jaws and The Godfather would put it beyond the ken of most kids. Nevertheless, without challenging the monolithic success of Shrek, it was still a big hit.
After Shark Tale would come a real oddity, Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow. Inspired by 1950s sci-fi comics, this would see a crazed German scientist kidnap the world’s greatest minds and then send giant robots rampaging through the streets of New York City. Teaming up to foil this megalomaniac would be Jude Law’s freelance buccaneer, Gwyneth Paltrow’s scoop-hungry hack and Angelina, a sexy, piratical pilot who may well have caused the break-up of an earlier relationship between Law and Paltrow. Really, you couldn’t blame him.
Sky Captain, an FX marvel that had seen the actors working mostly against green screens, was a cinematic wonder, but not a hit. Much the same could be said of Jolie’s next venture, Oliver Stone’s epic Alexander.

This saw her as Olympias, mother of Colin Farrell’s great conqueror. Married to a drunken Val Kilmer, she’s beaten and banished, but returns when her young son acquires the crown of Macedon, henceforth acting as his inspiration as he subjugates the nations. It was an odd movie, glorious in its scope, thrilling in its battle sequences, but undermined by the complexity of its message and its shy handling of Alexander’s bisexuality. Indeed, it was undermined to the extent that, having cost $150 million to make, its US box office takings stalled at $34 million. Ouch.
Generally slating the movie,

the critics paid special attention to the eastern European accent Angelina adopted. Fans would say this was a tad unfair – after all, Macedonia borders on Bulgaria which, like Russia, touches the Black Sea. She wasn’t THAT far off. But her career did not suffer. Branching out artistically, she’d move on to The Fever, directed by Vanessa Redgrave’s son Carlo Gabriel Nero. This was an HBO take on Wallace Shawn’s play about a middle-class woman’s political awakening. Ambitiously switching from action to filmed theatre to into-camera monologues, it would see Redgrave educated in the world’s political hot-spots by journalist Michael Moore and Jolie’s angry,

pistol-packing revolutionary. Jolie would then take on another major release, 2005’s Mr And Mrs Smith, where she and Brad Pitt starred as a bored couple whose marriage is both stimulated and endangered when they discover they’re both secret assassins, now unfortunately hired to kill one another. Even before its release the film would cause something of a stir. Firstly, extra shoots meant that Jolie could not carry the Olympic torch through Athens – her work for the United Nations High Commission For Refugees was to have seen her represent the world’s refugees. And there were the inevitable rumours of sexual misbehaviour. With Pitt and Jennifer Aniston the world’s most famous couple and Jolie Hollywood’s most notorious femme fatale, the tabloids, understandably, went bananas. For once they had good reason.
Mr And Mrs Smith was, understandably, a massive hit, taking $186 million at the US box office.

Much of the press surrounding it, though, concerned the stars themselves, the couple eventually being forced to ban questions about their relationship. For a full year they remained tight-lipped. Pictures of them together sporadically appeared, one set making upwards of $500,000. Pitt officially split from Aniston, divorcing in 2005. Only in 2006 would they come clean, with Pitt adopting Maddox and Zaharah Marley, an Ethiopian girl Jolie had herself adopted the year before. By the end of May they would have a child of their own, Shiloh Nouvel being born in Namibia. With Pitt now helping Jolie in her ambassadorial duties, it came as no surprise when they agreed to sell exclusive photos of the new arrival and donate all proceeds to charity.

. Charitable work and motherhood would now take up much of Jolie’s time. Having in 2004 been made an Honorary Citizen of Cambodia due to her efforts in the region, she’d visit post-earthquake Pakistan and involve herself in the huge Live 8 concert. She’d also address the World Economic Forum, highlighting the plights of Darfur, Afghanistan and Nepal. But there would be the occasional cinema release. 2006 would see the long-anticipated premiere of The Good Shepherd, directed by Robert De Niro.

This would tell the story of the early years of the CIA by following the career of operative Edward Wilson, played by Matt Damon, as he’s recruited before WW2 then becomes a player in the Cold War. Jolie would deliver a highly dramatic turn as Wilson’s wife Clover, first jumping him at a picnic and getting pregnant, then becoming estranged as war separates them, loneliness eventually driving her to cynicism and alcoholism. With an all-star cast featuring John Turturro, Michael Gambon and William Hurt, the movie would be both entertainment and history lesson.
Jolie’s next outing would see her return to the modern day with Michael Winterbottom’s hard-hitting A Mighty Heart. Based on the memoirs of Mariane Pearl, concerning the kidnap and murder of her journalist husband Daniel, this would see Jolie as the pregnant French radio reporter Mariane, hiding her grief as she seeks the most pragmatic methods of ensuring Daniel’s safe return. It was intelligent and moving, winning Jolie another Golden Globe nomination. She’d then move on to two animations.

First would come Beowulf, where Robert Zemeckis told the old Norse legend using the same performance-capture animation technique he’d employed so successfully with The Polar Express. Playing one of history’s most notorious female monsters, Grendel’s mother, Jolie would steal the show with her extraordinary entrance, rising from the waters of an underground lake, with a golden body and weird stiletto feet. Clearly enjoying herself, she’d be wholly viperous, sinister, unpredictable and dangerous. She’d have far less to do in the comic Kung Fu Panda where she’d be just one of five potential heroes required to save the animals of the Valley Of Peace from a marauding Ian McShane.

At this stage Jolie was choosing her roles carefully, fitting them around what had become an intensely busy personal life. In early 2007, she’d been hit hard by the death of her mother, then had adopted a Vietnamese boy, named Pax. She and Pitt had then moved to New Orleans, where they’d offer aid to those still homeless after Hurricane Katrina. Extra funds would be raised by her work for Japanese cosmetics giant Shiseido and knitwear fashion house St John. She and Pitt would continue to engage in charity work, in early 2008 giving $1 million towards the upkeep of children suffering in Iraq.
Back onscreen, 2008 would bring another action hit in Wanted, Jolie saying she’d needed a physical role to take her mind off her mother. The US debut of director Timur Bekmambetov, this would see James McAvoy as a nervous, hen-pecked accounts manager who’s picked up in a bar by a glamorous Jolie and told he’s born to join the Fraternity, an ancient order of assassins.

As McAvoy now goes after the guy who killed his father, Jolie screams around in a red sports car, performing all manner of hot stunts, exuding utter competence in a man’s world. After Tomb Raider and Mr And Mrs Smith, she’d become well used to such roles and the public clearly liked her in them, Wanted steaming through the $100 million barrier in the US. With all its frenetic action and CGI effects, it would be very different from her next outing, Clint Eastwood’s tough drama Changeling. Based on the true story of Christine Collins, this would see Jolie back in the late 1920s, playing a single mother whose young son disappears. Several months later, under pressure to solve the case, the police present her with another boy, not her son, and so she’s forced to battle massive corruption in the force and City Hall, being banged up in a psycho ward for her pains.

Both distressed and determined, Jolie would be impressive as she fought for her son and her rights in a painfully sexist system, and would be rewarded with nominations for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA. The same year, 2008, would see Jolie give birth to twins, Knox and Vivienne, official pictures of which would bring an amazing $14 million. all of which would be donated to the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, the charity she’d set up with her husband to help in “humanitarian crises throughout the world”…She’d furthermore be (sort of) reunited with her father after a 6 year split.
Still struggling with herself, and still publicly discussing her pleasures and pains (as well as her ever-increasing charity work – covered in part in her 2003 book Notes From My Travels), Jolie is one of Hollywood’s more complicated characters. She may have found stability with Brad Pitt but, both a sex object and an international diplomat, an action star and an Oscar-winning thespian, she’s a constant contradiction.
Alongside the Japanese sign for death, Billy Bob, H, two Native American symbols, a dragon and a black cross, she has marked on her body a Tennessee Williams line “A prayer for the wild at heart, kept in cages”, and “Quod me nutrit me destruit” – What nourishes me also destroys me. Let’s hope she continues to benefit from the nourishment. And the cage.
