What Android Apps on the BlackBerry PlayBook Mean to Users

2011-07-04T12:18:00.000-07:00

Android is open source software

2011-06-30T08:50:00.000-07:00

First off all, it will likely be several months after launch before BlackBerry PlayBook users see any Android apps for their tablets. RIM says the Android "app player," which will be available via BlackBerry App World and required to run Android apps on the PlayBook, is "expected" this summer. But RIM also said the PlayBook itself would be released in Q1 2011, and that hasn't happened, so it could be August or September before even the app player becomes available.

Also, the entire lineup of applications available in Android app stores like Google's Android Market or Amazon's new Appstore for Android will not likely be available for use on the PlayBook. In fact, RIM only announced PlayBook support for Android 2.3, or Android "Gingerbread," apps, so it's unclear just how many Android apps currently fall under that description.

In other words, PlayBook users won't simply be able to run any Android application. That's because Android developers will need to "repackage" their apps for distribution through BlackBerry App World, then work with RIM to get them approved. RIM has not yet specified whether or not PlayBook users will be able to get Android apps from sources other than App World, but it says the repackaging process for developers should be relatively painless. (The BlackBerry-maker is not exactly known for its smooth and easy app-submission processes, to say the least, so I can't help but wonder just how Android developers will take to working with RIM.)

Regardless, the ultimate success or failure of Android on the PlayBook, in my opinion, will hinge on just how well RIM's PlayBook app player--essentially an Android emulator--works. Will Android apps run on the PlayBook the way they're supposed to without negatively affecting overall PlayBook performance? If not, it probably won't take developers long to decide not to waste any more time and jump ship.

So, to sum that all up, RIM's Android-apps-on-the-PlayBook announcement sure sounds interesting from a user perspective. And the news will undoubtedly draw lots of attention. But we'll have to wait and see just how well it actually plays out; whether or not the PlayBook's ability to run Android will convince potential buyers to pull the trigger and go with RIM's tablet, or make the tablet more valuable to existing owners, will depend entirely on the Android-on-PlayBook experience.

I will say this, however: I'd be a heck of a lot more likely to purchase a BlackBerry PlayBook after seeing it efficiently run Android apps alongside BlackBerry apps than if the tablet could only run BlackBerry software. And I don't think I'm alone in that.

What Android Apps on the BlackBerry PlayBook Mean to Software Developers

Once again, I can only make predictions based on the information RIM has made available to this point, but in general, the PlayBook support for Android apps should be a good thing for Android and BlackBerry developers--assuming the new app-player emulators adequately function.

The PlayBook Android support should be good for Android developers, because they'll have a new audience of potential buyers who will be anxious to get their hands on the latest and greatest software available for their tablets.

And RIM says: "Developers currently building for the BlackBerry or Android platforms will be able to quickly and easily port their apps to run on the BlackBerry Tablet OS thanks to a high degree of API compatibility."
If this proves to be true, Android developers shouldn't have to do much extra work to get their apps ready for the PlayBook, so the potential return on investment could be significant. It is worth noting, however, that it's still unclear how "complex" Android applications that draw on various Android resources like GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc, will function on the BlackBerry Tablet OS. For example, will all advanced app-functionality be compatible with the PlayBook? If not, the value of some applications would be greatly diminished, and it might not be worth a developer's time to port over such apps.

For BlackBerry Tablet OS developers, the PlayBook's ability to run Android software should similarly be a positive development, drawing more attention to the PlayBook and hopefully translating into more PlayBook users/potential customers.

One possible negative I see is that over time, developers may be drawn to the Android platform and away from RIM's BlackBerry or Tablet OS. They could simply develop apps for Android, via user-friendly tools, and then port them over instead of creating full-featured apps, or "Super Apps" in RIM parlance, meant specifically to take advantage of the PlayBook's hardware/software integration.

I think the crucial elements to developer success here are, again, an effective--or even impressive--Android emulator, and an application port- and submission process that is as "quick and easy" as RIM promises.

Android Application Developer - A Complete New World of Prospects

2011-06-27T07:57:00.000-07:00

SAN FRANCISCO--Android is open-source software, but it does not come with much of an open-source society, and the Google leader of the plan explain why yesterday.

Because people can study Android's resource code, adjust it, and construct it into their own hardware, the mobile working system qualify as open-source software. But Google workout tight control over what gets built into the official Android software, what gets unconstrained as Android, and when that source code appears--especially with the tablet-oriented Honeycomb edition.

The reason for Google's move toward is so the company can manage Android's interfaces, the underlying skin texture that Android apps use, Rubin told the media at the Google I/O conference here.

These request programming interfaces (APIs) are best industrial in private and released only when Google deems them done, a method that ensure app compatibility, he said.

"Open source is different than a community-driven assignment," Rubin said, in which a broad meeting of people collectively decide the software's future. "Android is light on the community-driven side and grave on open source."

That's on purpose: "When we add new APIs, typically, in my opinion, society processes don't work because it's really hard to tell when you're complete. It's solid to tell what's release and what's a beta. Developers have to have an hope those APIs are done at a sure date. With a community process, a worker could take an early version and start structure devices. The apps would be mismatched."

In some open-source projects, such as Mozilla's Firefox or the Linux kernel, growth happens in a very able to be seen way. The source code for forthcoming features can be viewed long before those features appear in the software people actually use, and public planning take place on open mailing lists.

With Android, it's all at the back closed doors, and new features are a shock. Even with Motorola's Xoom now shipping with Honeycomb, in its Android 3.0 and now 3.1 versions, Google has yet to discharge the software's source code.

And it won't, until the discharge of Ice Cream Sandwich, the account of Android that brings Honeycomb's new border to the full range of Android devices, counting mobile phones and Google TV devices. Ice Cream Sandwich--already creature called the more suitable ICS by Google engineers--is due to appear in the fourth quarter.

Google says Honeycomb's blocked nature was an incomparable circumstance bring about by the company's need to get a pill OS to market as rapidly as possible. As a result, Google split off a special bough of Android just for tablets.

The open-source topic was a controversial one at a fireplace chat with developers at the conference. One person asked of Honeycomb, "Is the source code ever going to be really open-source?"

Dan Morrill, who's in allege of open-source software and compatibility matters for Android, said officially it would be, because the group of patches that comprise Honeycomb, each stored independently in an online Git repository, will become open finally.

The problem is that nobody exterior Google will be able to tell which patches comprise Honeycomb, because Google isn't publicly releasing that information.

"Honeycomb is a set of patch. Ice Cream Sandwich is a larger set that includes Honeycomb patches. The source will get out there. The question is will we tag it to let somebody rebuild a Honeycomb build," Morrill said "We don't know yet. It depends on how things tremble out in the fourth quarter," when Ice Cream Sandwich ships.

But Dave Sparks, technical lead for Android's media framework, was blunter.

"We're not releasing Honeycomb source," Sparks said.

The end of the new Android software

2011-06-09T08:32:00.000-07:00

China is a country where the internet is still censored a lot. Only few people in there are able to enjoy what many of us in the Western world now consider basic internet amenities such as YouTube, Facebook, Lala, Myspace and Twitter, to name a few. Therefore it comes as a bit of surprise to see that the government of China will not be limiting 3G Cell Phones and smartphones that run on the Google Android software. This of course, so long as they comply with Chinese Law.

This announcement was made in hopes to sooth the worried minds of investors, who after all, would like the largest country in the world to be able to get involved with the software. This is great news for a variety of 3G Cell Phones maker whose phones use the Android or other software. Before China had cleared the air on the subject companies such as Motorola were making moves to supplement the software and search engines in their phones so that there would be few to no hiccups should the devices be banned. But that is luckily history, at least for the time being.

However it does raise an intriguing question for those in the business. To what extent should these somewhat closed countries, albeit massive ones like China, be marketed towards. Should the focus go to the Western world and to the countries that will not think twice about accepting new software into their country or should 3G cell phones manufacturers go out of their way to target these markets, because if a deal is reached, they will have the inside track to a world of people that before were closed off. At this time it seems companies are still looking for that inside track but whether or not significant dividends have been payed is another topic.

What we do know, at least from our Western perspective, is that it seems ridiculous to not let these people have these now basic technologies that the rest of the world is accustomed to. So perhaps this is a way for companies to gain more profit but to also have some bizarre sense of political significance in a communist country. While turning a profit is no doubt the first goal for these companies, who could argue with helping open the doors to a secluded communist country? Seems like it would be quite gratifying, no? This a very encouraging sign not just for Google and those who use Android Devices but for China, too.
