Giving my home a retro look on a tight budget

I've always loved the 50s and 60s retro look and now it's back in style thanks to Mad Men. But then again a lot of the things that have been created that are in that style are a bit out of my budget. Because of that, I thought that I would try and DIY a lot of things to mimic the more expensive stuff. My furniture has been retro for a while, but I've been upgrading to some new furniture that just looks old lately. It's about that time anyway.
I looked online to see if I could get some Tile Flooring installed because I love the black and white tile flooring. Nothing looks more retro than that. So I'm going to get that done in my kitchen.
I also found some DIY reupholstering tips and I'm going to try and reupholster some of my furniture into some new, retro looking fabric. I found a sale on some really great stuff and I think that it's going to really brighten up my living room couch.

Five years in the US

It was January 22, 2007 when I left the Philippines and it's been five years that I have been here in the US. Time just go by so fast. I'm glad within five years of being here I was able to apply for my naturalization and became a US Citizen. I am done with all my immigration papers and my next goal is to be able to get my parents to come here and live with us.

Torchwood parties for this new season

Back when Torchwood was on the air for the first few seasons, I really got into it because of one episode where it crossed over with Doctor Who. Then I got hooked. It was the same for my roommates too and we just started watching it religiously together. Well, not all of us still live together, but we've been getting together to watch the new episodes. It's also a reason for us to catch up with each other. It's amazing how much less you see people when you don't live together.
I was looking up some spoilers for the season a few weeks ago and while I was doing that I ran across the website clear-internet.com. I looked through it some and after that I decided to switch my internet service at my apartment over to it.
I'm pretty please with the new Torchwood season so far. I think that they're doing a good job with it, especially since they called off almost all of their original cast.

It has been close to 4 months since I gave birth. I can't believe how the days go by and how my baby Toby is growing so fast.He will be 4 months on the 8th of August and he is growing to be a chunky boy. He coos and starts making noises and he smiles and laughs a lot when I start talking to him. He looks a lot like his older brother Tyler.

As much as I dread it, when I it snows outside I have to brave it and head into work. I work as a secretary so I can't really get away with working from home, unfortunately. There are only so many things that I can do through e-mail. I just have to be by the phone.
So I keep a pretty close eye on the weather reports to help psych myself up for when I'll have to drive in bad weather. When I was doing that last week I came across some hughesnet deals that sounded so great that I decided to sign up for one of them for my home internet service.
But I am pretty good at winter weather driving because I take my time and am extra cautious. That means that I have to get up early and get ready for work earlier, but it's worth not getting into a wreck. Plus, if I'm not there at work on time, I'm not doing my job well.

Pregnancy at 31 weeks

I'm getting closer to my due date and getting more uneasy moving around because of the pains due to pregnancy. I had my prenatal check up this morning and everything went good. My blood pressure was normal, Urine test was normal too. I gained more weight and I up to 123.6 lbs which is normal since I was only around 94 lbs because I got pregnancy. I was at 130 lbs with my last pregnancy. So, it's about close I think since I still have 9 weeks more to go. Me and hubby are excited to see this baby. I'm sure Tyler is excited too. He knows that I'm going to have a baby and he knows that I have the baby in my tummy right now.

Shoes

It’s the big sale of the year and people came out to shop as early as 3 am to fall in line to the stores just to be able to get in and avail of the lowest price and great deals on selected products. Even if it was 4 degrees F this morning but it didn’t stop for the shoppers to enjoy the biggest sale of Black Friday. Hubby and I went around from one store to another but didn’t go til past 9 in the morning. We got some good deals though but mostly for Tyler’s clothes and toys for Christmas. I was looking for shoes but didn’t find the ones I like. I am thinking of checking for shoes online first so it would save me time and gas from going out driving from one store to another. I am sure there is still a lot of good deals even if Black Friday Sale has ended. While checking and browsing online I came across with zappos.com that sells different brands of women’s shoes, as well as men’s and kid’s shoes. They carry a wide selection of branded shoes like Adidas, Born, Calvin Klein and many more. I might check on this site and see if I could get some get good deals on Born Shoes that are on SALE right now.

Thanksgiving

We had a great thanksgiving celebration last night. Everyone in the family showed up and that was one of the best Thanksgiving dinner I had since I came here in the US. The foods were good and yummy and best of all visiting with the family was wonderful. Before we started our dinner, everyone of us had a chance to say what we were thankful for and everyone took turn to say their part. It was a memorable one. Tyler was having fun too because he saw his cousins and he played with them.

Getting Ready for Thanksgiving

Are you guys ready for Thanksgiving? Me and the family are getting ready for it. We are spending Thanksgiving Day in Delta, Colorado where hubby's brother and his family live. Hubby and mom-in-law are in the kitchen busy preparing stuff to take with us for tomorrow's celebration. They are good at it so I spare myself from it coz they know better when it comes to American foods. Ha,ha,... Tyler is asleep and I have my laudry in the dryer on. This will be Tyler's second Thanksgiving but it will be his first when he is much aware of what is going on around him coz he is 17 months old now. I can't believe my baby is growing fast.

There's so much information about pregnancy and childbirth online and I am so thankful that I can use my clear wimax 4Gt to do the research. I think about my mom when she was pregnant with me and how she had to go out and buy a bunch of pregnancy and childbirth books. She also had to go to the library to check out a bunch of books about babies and their development. Not me! All I have to do is get online and browse the internet. Anything I want to know is right there and it's free for the viewing. I've read about everything from conception to the full term development of my baby to how to take care of her when she's born. I've even gone to some of the video sites and viewed some of the birthing videos. That's a little scary but I know how happy I will be when my baby finally arrives. Of course, I have to be careful when browsing the internet for information about pregnancy and childbirth and especially about how to take care of my baby when she's born. It's like shopping. Some sites offer better quality information than others so I have to be careful.

Fishing

Hubby went fishing with Nichole tonight. He told me if I wanted to go but said no because I wasn't in the mood. Sometimes I get bored especially when we don't catch fish right away. I just talked to him over the phone and told me that they caught 4 catfish but set them free back to the lake. They were fixing up to get back home. I told him if he could drop by Burger King to get me some chicken fries with barbeque sauce with it. I just put Tyler down on his crib asleep. Now, I have some time to blog and check online.

Yes, I think Bandit needs Nylabone to solve his bad breath problem. I told hubby one time that Bandit’s breath is so bad and asked him if there is any way we could do to solve the problem like going to the Vet to have his teeth cleaned. Growing Tyler

Wow, I could not believe how fast my baby grows. It's been awhile since my last post and now my baby is already a toddler. Tyler just turned 1 year old last June 23rd. He has grown a lot. He is now walking and running around. He has learned a lot of things. He can say some words aside from mama and dada. He can point at things he wants to get. He is more playful and more active which keeps me busy all day long. Here's Tyler's latest pics.

Tyler at 5 months

Tyler is 5 months old today. I can't believe how time flies by so fast and how quick Tyler has grown. He is getting bigger and bigger each passing day. We have introduced him to eating rice cereal which he doesn't care much but he is learning how to swallow it. We think that he is not ready for solid foods yet. So, we only give him rice cereal once a week. At 5 months he is more active, and responsive specially when you talk to him. He makes a lot of noises now and he drools a lot too. I guess he will be teething pretty soon. He sleeps longer at night now. Last night for the very first time he slept for 11 hours straight. He slept at 8 in the evening and woke up at 7 this morning. Although he started crying last night and I thought he would wake up and wanted his milk but I just gave him his "bingkee" (pacifier) and went back to sleep again. He has always been a good boy at night. I only feed him once or twice and he would go back to sleep when I put him back to his crib. Hubby took some pictures of him today at 5 months old.

I just got home from work 15 minutes ago. It was a busy day at the nursing home during my shift. It has always been that way. I don’t get a chance to sit except during my 30 minutes break and dinner time for the residents since I help feed some of the residents too. It’s a lot of work but it’s rewarding because I am able to help them. I started working as a CNA since October 1st . I worked 5 times a week from 2 pm til 10 in the evening. I already got my first paycheck which I got paid for 4 days of my training but I am more excited this coming paycheck which is next week because I get paid for 2 weeks and so I get paid more. I’m thinking about buying something that would remind me of the first big pay check I got just to reward myself. Maybe an iphone, this is what hubby is using right now and he loves it. I might also get one for myself. I am checking for prices online to see how much it would cost me to buy this kind of phone and other iphone accessories such as iphone case and the iphone car charger. This is just a thought, it’s not final yet if I would get an iphone but if I got a good deal on it I might consider buying it. Yep, been lazy the past weeks that I have not updated my blog. I will be 32 weeks pregnant tomorrow, getting closer and closer to seeing my baby. This morning when I woke up I felt a slight cramps in my tummy and I got a little bit nervous that it might be a sign of preterm labor but I was glad that it went away. My baby has been active most of the time, he keeps moving, kicking and squirming most often which my OB said is a good thing. I only have 8 weeks more to go, hoping that my little one will come at a perfect time. Hang in there my little boy.

Warm Weather

We have a perfect warm weather today and this is one of my favorite weather. The sun is shining brightly. I love the feel of the warmth of my skin, the wind is also warm enough for me. I can go out without wearing long sleeve shirts. It's about time to end wearing coats and jockets for sure. Hopefully the rest of the week will be as warm as today.

Hubby and I are planning for a trip to Salt Lake, Utah tomorrow. Hubby already booked a hotel we can spend the night with. We are going to the Salt lake temple and on Thursday we will be meeting a Pinay friend and her husband in Draper, Utah. It will be our first time to meet her husband and also their baby since she came here in the US in August 2007.

Prenatal Check Up

I had my prenatal check up yesterday and I'm thankful to God that everything went fine. I did Glucose challenge tolerance test and the result was normal which mean that I don't have Gestational diabetes which occurs to some women during their pregnancy. I hope that my blood sugar will continue to be normal during my entire pregnancy. My OB was glad to know that I have the normal weight that I'm supposed to gain. I was underweight before I got pregnant (88 lbs) so i should gain at least 28-40 lbs during my pregnancy. So far, I am at 114.8 lbs. They also checked my urine, blood pressure, my baby's heart beat, measured my tummy and everything is normal and good as what my OB said. Hubby and I were so glad to hear that everything goes well. I am at my 27 weeks and my OB said I will be seeing him every 2 weeks then it will be a weekly visit starting 36 weeks and until I gave birth.

Snow in Spring!

We got another snow this Spring, it's the second time we got our share of snow since spring started. When I got up earlier this morning there wasn't any snow yet. Hubby told me that it only took an hour for the snowfall to cover the ground. We got almost 2 inches of snow today but later in the morning. The sun came out and melted all the snow away.

Got a new printer....

Hubby was having trouble fixing our printer since yesterday because of paper jam. Even if he already took the paper that was jammed, still the printer would say that it was jammed. He could not use the printer anymore so he called Best Buy where we bought it and he was told to take the printer and they would send it to HP service center to have it fixed but it would take 2 weeks to get it done which is a bad timing for not having the printer because hubby needed it badly for his online class. So we went to Best Buy this morning and brought with us the printer since it has one year warranty on it. The store associate started to fill up the form and key in some information for it but then he said that Hp won't do repair at their service center and we were told that we can return the printer we have and replace a new one which is very nice. So we check for a new printer and found the same model of the HP printer we were using and we just have it swapped. So we went home with a brand new printer. We bought the old printer for 199 dollars and the new one that we swapped was priced at $304.00 dollars. We didn't pay anything for the new one but just paid another year of warranty for only 25 dollars. What a great deal! Hubby was glad that he had bought that old printer with a one year warranty.
