The only reason I downloaded this demo was because the cover looked cool beside the NHL 12 cover on the Xbox Live Demo Marketplace. And I’m sure glad I did.

I did play a bit of Warhammer 40k back in the day, and to see it brought to life in a shooter is really cool. At first, Space Marine looked like yet another Gears of War clone, but that stigma quickly wore off as I got to know my trusty Chain Sword thing that cut everything to shreds with few presses of the X button.

Can’t wait to get my hands on this one.

After a long wait, NHL 12 finally gets it’s demo and we think it’s awesome.

In this video you get to see the Play Now mode which features the Canucks vs. Bruins as well as the abbreviated Be a Pro mode which has some great features that make it way more accessible than before. The only thing this video is missing are more goalie fights. We tried to get one on video and it never materialized.

Can’t wait for the full version of the game in a few weeks!

Cut the Rope: Experiments is this weeks iPhone Game of the Week and could easily be classified as on of the best iPhone games. Period.

The premise is to bring a piece of candy to a monster named ‘Om Nom.’ And as the title suggests, you do this by cutting ropes as well as using objects that are given to you on every board.

If you’re someone who has played the original game, and chances are that you have, you’ll feel right at home as most of the popular elements are back. But some new ones are introduced as well. Rope Shooters and Suction-cups are welcome additions to the puzzle solving realm of Cut the Rope. They not only provide a new level of sophistication for CtR, but do it in a fashion that everyone can figure out and understand within minutes.

The only downfall, and I say this very, very lightly, is the fact that there are only 75 puzzles included. Broken up into 3 different sections (Getting Started, Shooting Candy and Sticky Steps), CTR: Experiments can be chewed up by any player in a few hours. Thankfully, Zepto Labs has promised to add more sections in future updates all for the low cost of free. Something to look forward too.

I can’t recommend this game enough. People refer to Angry Birds as the pinacle of mobile gaming. To me, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Cut the Rope is.

Cut the Rope: Experiements is currently available on the App store for 99 cents. Check it out!

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is the third Summer of Arcade title to come out this year and arguably the most unique. Is it Insane enough to warrant it’s $15 pricetag?

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet (or ITSP) is a 2D side-scrolling action-adventure game which puts you in a spaceship that is tasked to explore a strange planet.

The story is explained through a unique set of hand drawn cutscenes which are accompanied by music performed by Dimmu Borgir, a popular Norweigan Black Metal band.

-Craziest Art-Style Ever. The first thing you notice when you boot the game up is it’s unique hand-drawn visuals. Designed by Mr. Michel Gagné, each and every cutscene you witness is completely hand drawn and filled with all-sorts of awesome. The attention to detail really sets this game apart.

-Most of the Puzzles are fun. It would be fair to say that this game not only prides itself on it’s beautiful art-style, but the in-game puzzles as well. Most of them are simple enough to figure out within seconds and really add a sense of accomplishment when you complete them.

-Play how you want to play. Unlike most games where you need to kill every single thing in order to advance in a level, ITSP allows you to do whatever the heck you want. Feel like killing all those things that are shielded by a massive piece of armor? Go ahead. Don’t feel like killing a single thing? Do your best and steer your way through the waves of enemies until you reach your destination. The only thing you end up having to kill are the bosses which cap off the end of each area. And those fights themselves are unique and fun.

-Multiplayer that doesn’t feel tacked on. I absolutely hate when a game throws together a multiplayer mode just for the sake of having one. But that certainly isn’t the case for ITSP. Instead of making the standard deathmatch mode, which could have been easily done, the guys at Fuelcell decided to try something completely different.

I present to you Lantern Run. Based on a later part of the single-player campaign, this mode tasks you and 3 other friends to carry lanterns through the dark caverns of the Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet while being chased by a mysterious Shadow Monster. The further you and your team get, the more points you get which is then submitted to a global leaderboard. I really enjoyed this mode, but it’s not something that cannot be played for hours at a time as the simple nature of it make it become stale after 5-6 plays.

-No on-screen map. Since ITSP is based around roaming one giant map, it would have been great to seen an on-screen map instead of having to hit the back button every single time I wanted to see where I was. I must have done that hundreds of times.

-No in-game help for puzzles. I’m not asking you to solve the game for me, but some sort of help would be great after I’ve ran around the map several times trying to figure WTF I did wrong in order to not solve this puzzle. The in-game laser scanning device that your ship is equipped with is hardly enough help as all it does is tell you what to device you can use to interact objects with.

-Short single-player. Even after taking my sweet ass time on some levels and having diffuculty solving a few puzzles, my playtime with ITSP was about 5 hours total. With hardly any replay value once you’ve beat it the first time, ITSP is not a lengthy game by any means. Especially for 1200 MS points.

-The story. Having the story played out through animated cutscenes is a great idea. Adding great sounding music is even better. But I still had no clue WTF was going on throughout the entire game.

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is one of the more unique experiences you can have on the Xbox Live Arcade. But it’s also a very short one. And that is it’s biggest downfall.

Yesterday, we did a quick look for Bodycount and didn’t find it all that good. So tonight, we are presenting you with a much better game. The quick look for the last Summer of Arcade game, Toy Soldiers: Cold War.

In this vid you get to see the first level of the game which involves waves of enemies that include infantry, tanks, planes and something that could only be described as a Super Toy Death machine.

Lookout for a Review next Thursday.

The Bodycount Demo was released on the Xbox Live Marketplace today and because I had no clue what it was, I figured why not do a quick look to find out!

First impression would be that it’s a shooter. Duh. But one that combines elements from every FPS released the past few years. It’s a neat concept, but the game doesn’t do that great of a job at explaining things. Also, not being able to move when you look down the iron sights is one of the worst things you could do in a shooter. Why change something that has worked so well this past generation? I get that you want to be unique, but screwing with something that has become second nature to most gamers is not a good idea.

I may give it a rent, but with Deus Ex, Madden and every other major release coming out the following weeks, I really doubt I’m going to have the time.

In our first installment of the iPhone Game of the Week, we take a look at the newly released Tiny Words by Codespin Inc.

As someone who frequents the App store every night before bed, I’ve noticed the overall lack of quality in some of the newly released games. Maybe it’s because I have all the good ones, or because I’m getting sick of the usual Angry Birds crap, but it’s increasingly harder to find a good game thats not only fun, but worth some money.

That brings me to Tiny Words, a bite sized word game that was introduced to me a few weeks ago. The whole premise, as the title suggests, is all about spelling tiny, four letter words within a certain time limit. The more words you spell in a row the the higher the multiplier you get, which increases your point output and overall time limit.

As someone who is absurdly addicted to Scrabble and Words with Friends, Tiny Words is a great change of pace. Not only do games take a fraction of the time (my longest game never went passed 2-3 minutes, but that increases the better you get), they get pretty addicting when all you want to do is top your previous score.

The only thing that could possibly make this better would be some sort of multiplayer component. I look at all the games that consume most of my time on the iPhone and each one has some sort of element in which I’m interacting with someone else either through Wi-Fi or 3G. Not a gamebreaker, but something that would be great in a future update.

Despite that small complaint, Tiny Words is a great buy if you’re looking for something that isn’t the standard birdshooting fare. It’s simple, fun and addicting. Three things that I look for in any game I play.

Tiny Words is currently available on the App store for $0.99. Check it out!
