Ode to the Forgotten

Ode to the Forgotten uses the arts to inform people about emotional and physical poverty and inspires them to use their talents to become passionate about eradicating those poverties.  Through their partner organizations, they equip people with the resources they need to transform their passion for poverty into tangible service.

On June 1st, from 7 to 9 pm, Ode to the Forgotten will be celebrating the release of their new CD, Lend Free, at Simply Sweet Shoppe in Carmel.  25% of the proceeds from the CD will benefit CHIP Indy (The Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention of Indianapolis), and another 25% will benefit Gleaners Food Bank.  The rest of the money generated by this fundraiser will help Ode to the Forgotten become a tax-exempt non-profit organization.  It will also help fund an upcoming series of Ode to the Forgotten events centered on homelessness, hunger, and emotional poverty.  The CD will be available on ITunes and Amazon June 1st.  Hard copies will be sold a the CD release event in Carmel.

The Lend Free album features original songs and poems meant to motivate and inspire people to become passionate about serving in their local communities.  The title track, Lend Free, breaks stereotypes about poverty and gives them a fresh, new perspective.  "Poverty isn't just monetary.  It's not always something you can see. It may be a sob in the sound or a lock in the heart...wil these poverties, eradication is a reality that begins with the daily acts of you and me..." -Lend Free.

At Ode to the Forgotten, we believe that everyone has something to lend - whether it be time, talent, or financial resources.  Ode was created four years ago by two high school freshmen who were very talented writers and poets.  They dared to ask the question, how can we use our gifts and talents to benefits those who are in poverty?  From there. Ode to the Forgotten has grown into a passionate organization that uses the arts to spread the message that everyon can make a difference in their local community.  Ode continues to promtoe this message throug their art series, CDs, local nonprofit partnerships and informational/ipirational events.

Featured artist on the CD are Sarah Hensley, Executive Director to Ode to the Forgotten, Tyler Sapp, Music Director to Ode to the Forgotten, Amyra Asamoah, poet, and Rebekah Whitman, vocal artist.  The album art was designed and painted by Lynette Sauer, the Arts Programming Director of Ode to the Forgotten.

The Diviners

Carmel Community Players, Carmel’s oldest continuously performing community theater group, will partner with Janus Developmental  Services to raise money for and awareness about Janus’ services to developmentally challenged citizens of Hamilton County during the June 14 to 24 run of “The Diviners” at the Carmel Community Playhouse, 14299 Clay Terrace Blvd, Suite 140, in Carmel.

“The Diviners,” which was written by Jim Leonard, Jr.  when he was a 19-year-old student at Earlham College, is set in rural Indiana  at the beginning of the Great Depression.  It is the story of Buddy, a mentally challenged teenager who suffered brain damage in a near drowning accident that also killed his mother, and his relationships with the people who live around him in the fictional town of Zion, Indiana.  The original 1980 production featured pre-“Cheers” Woody Harrelson in the role of a preacher questioning his faith.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us both,” Rich Phipps, CCP president, explained.  “Buddy is both the central character and moral compass of ‘The Diviners.’  We wanted to use that aspect of the play to increase public awareness of the services offered to young people like Buddy through organizations like Janus.”

“We are very excited about working with Carmel Community Players on this production,” Teresa Steege, Senior Vice President of Janus Developmental Services, Inc. said. “This is a wonderful opportunity to increase community awareness regarding our programs and services through the theater medium .
“We are sincerely grateful to be chosen for this honor,” Steege continued.  “Without valuable community partners such as the Carmel Community Players we could not make such an incredible difference in the lives of children and adults living with disabilities.”
According to Phipps, during “The Diviners” CCP will contribute $1 for every ticket sold to Janus.  It will also take cash contributions and sell handicrafts made by Janus’ clients before and after the show and during intermissions.  In addition, following the Sunday matinees on June 17 and 24, representatives from Janus will talk to the audience and answer any questions they may have.

“We hope the whole community comes out to see this play and to support Janus,” Phipps said. “’The Diviners’ is a deeply moving, quintessentially Hoosier play and we are so honored and pleased to be able to present it.”

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors 62 and older and students.  They can be purchased on line or by calling the box office at (317)815-9387

Friday, May 18th is National Bike to Work Day.  Hamilton County employees will once again participate.

Bike riding is becoming more common.  According to the US Census Bureau, approximately 730,000 Americans bike to work as their primary means of transportation, which is fifty percent increase since 2000.

The following are some tips from the Sustain Noblesville Committee that will help anyone enjoy biking to work more:

  • Have your bike checked over by your local bike shop.
  • Always wear a helmet to protect your head in the event of a crash.
  • Ride in the right-most lane that goes in the direction that you are traveling.
  • Obey all stop signs, traffic lights, and lane markings.
  • Look before you change lanes or signal a turn; indicate your intention, then act.
  • Be visible and predictable at all times, wear bright clothing and signal turns.
