Biography

Melina Aslanidou born in Stuttgart, Germany the daughter of Greek parents she moved to Greece with her family soon after her birth.Her involvement with Greek music started at very young age when she was still in grammar school and thereafter in high school.At the age 18 she moved to Thessaloniki for studies and there she started singing in student venus..

In 1996 she met Christos Mitrentzis, a leading tradiotional folk musician in Greece with whom she collaborated for several years.Together they also participated in the Woman Festival in Berlin as representatives of the traditional music of Greece.

In 2001 when the group ''Oi Apenantoi'' was formed she joined as their lead singer.Together they released the cd ''To Parelthon Thimithika'' which included the song '' Ti sou kana kai pineis'' which became an instant hit.The particular song which envolved from Greek cinema was originally performed by Poly Panou. Aslanidou not only brought it back to the spotlight, but more importantly her unique interpretation added a very unique flavour making it more popular than the original release.In 2002 she withdrew from th group '' Oi Apenantoi'' to persue a solo career.

Since then she collaborates with the famous Greek singer George Dalaras in live concerts and tours within and outside of Greece.Her participaton in the 2003 New York concert '' All Around is Light'' organized by the Cultural Olympiad on the occasion of the Athens 2004 Olympics is among the many important musical perfomances she has given next to Dalaras outside the boundaries of Greece.

in 2003 she also participated in the recording of the album by Nikos Antipas,Giannis Spathas and Lina Nikolakopoulou '' Oposdipote Parathiro'' with the song '' Nai Tha Po'' which climbed immediately at the top of all Greek radio charts.

In April 2003 she released her first personal album ''To Perasma''.In 2005 she released a cd single with three songs under the title ''Treis Efches'' while at the end of the same year she also released her second album '' Pechnidi Einai''.

In the summer 2007 she released the Cd single ''Psila Takounia''.In 2008 she shared the stage with Rallia Christidou at the venue ''Stavros tou Notou Apenanti'' in Athens in a series of very successful perfomances.

Her latest cd '' Sto Dromo'' was released in early December 2008.

Apart from her personal discography she has also recorded several albums with other leading singers, including albums with music and songs from live perfomances and television series.In addition to her close collaboration with Dalaras, over the yeras, sha has also collaborated with several leading Greek stars including Dimitra Galani,Eleftheria Arvanitaki,Kostas Makedonas among many others.

In May 2009 she gave a live concert at the historic Town Hall Theatre in Manhattan,New York in a tribute to “The Songs of Greek Cinema”. This one of a kind concert presented for the first time in New York.

Recently in a radio interview, Living Successfully host Bob Keeton asked me the question “Is astrology a cult?”

I never before realized how profound and important this question is. What exactly is astrology, and how does it relate to spirituality? When a fellow seeker asked on my online forum, “Is there room for God in astrology?” I knew it was time to write this article.

Is there room for God in astrology? You might as well ask if there is room for God in botany. It’s true that spiritual and/or religious people often work with astrology. However, you do not have to believe in a higher power to study and use astrology, any more than you would to study a flower blooming. Astrology is not a question of faith, but a fact of life, like the rising and setting of the Sun, the phases of the Moon, and the tides.

Common among world religions is belief in a creator, an infinite benevolent presence that is so large and intricate that the human mind cannot understand the entirety of it. This creator fashioned the universe with the heavens in synch with Earth. And this is where astrology fits in with almost all religious or spiritual beliefs—it is the study of the synchronicity of heaven and earth.

It is said that each of us carries a small piece of the divine within us, also known as the soul. The soul incarnates in human or animal form in order to help others, or to learn more about the nature of existence through interaction with others. It is only when the conscious mind cooperates with the soul’s needs that we find true happiness in life. Resisting or ignoring these needs leads to a feeling of emptiness, “there must be more to life than this.” An astrological chart, when applied in a spiritual context, is a “roadmap” that suggests concrete ways for an individual to engage and work with the soul.

Astrology is the study of planetary cycles. Over thousands of years, humans have noticed synchronicity between planetary patterns, and natural and social activity on Earth. The cycle of day/night, the four seasons, and the tides are the most obvious examples. But there are other more subtle patterns as well. Astrologers draw from a reservoir of knowledge, collected over several millennia of human experience, and then use their knowledge to help themselves or others.

It is possible to use this knowledge to further selfish interests as well as spiritual awareness. Consider our botanist for a moment. Her tree has many uses—she can build furniture with it, burn it for light and warmth, sit beneath it for shade and comfort, eat fruit from it, or simply embrace it, forming a connection by which she can access the divine. Likewise, astrology has many different applications. There are spiritual or karmic astrologers, psychological astrologers, financial, medical, relocation astrologers, astrologers who make predictions. There are even astrologers who forecast weather by the planetary patterns.

This idea is commonly misunderstood, as astrology has a reputation for being, at best, a titillating parlor game, in which the “fortune teller” predicts events in the querent’s future. This can make the idea of a chart reading seem daunting. Occasionally people say to me, “I’d rather not know,” because they fear I will tell them something bad will happen.

But the idea prevalent in modern psychological and spiritual astrology is that the stars impel, they do not compel. We can use astrology to read energies, tendencies or influences present in a person’s life, but we cannot say how that person will use them. I can tell you that a storm is coming, but what you’ll do with that information—whether you’ll plant a garden, buy an umbrella, or run outdoors with a lightning rod—is your decision.

Unlike God, we astrologers do not have all the answers—but we can help to reframe the questions by clarifying the energetic context.

Many emotions move the human heart when it decides to dedicate itself to the spiritual path.
This may be a “noble” reason – like faith, love of our neighbor, or charity.
Or it may be just a whim, the fear of loneliness, curiosity, or the fear of death.

None of that matters. The true spiritual path is stronger than the reasons that led us to it and little by little it imposes itself with love, discipline and dignity.
A moment arrives when we look backwards, remember the beginning of our journey, and laugh at ourselves. We have managed to grow, although we traveled the path for reasons that were very futile.

God uses loneliness to teach us about living together.
Sometimes he uses anger so that we can understand the infinite value of peace.
At other times he uses tedium, when he wants to show us the importance of adventure and leaving things behind.
God uses silence to teach us about the responsibility of what we say.
At times he uses fatigue so that we can understand the value of waking up.
At other times he uses sickness to show us the importance of health.
God uses fire to teach us about water.
Sometimes he uses earth so that we can understand the value of air. And at times he uses death when he wants to show us the importance of life

Winds of Change

Ultimately the world is about to change because it needs to move forward spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Anything on an individual or world level that does not respond to the signs of this transit and the Universe will be “dissolved” by the influence of Neptune over the next 13 years. Stagnation, oppression, corruption, greed in any form will find it hard to survive. Transformation of existing business and banking structure is inevitable, as the focus shifts to the suffering of humanity and those less fortunate, in conjunction with a greater need for spirituality. It is therefore important to pay attention to the signs in one’s own life of where change needs to happen, internally or externally, so that there is consistent smooth movement forward with the Universe, individually and on a mass level, otherwise the outcome may not be so pleasant. Dealing with reality and not falling into delusion is another issue to be aware of as the Neptune in Pisces transit will “dissolve” this over time. For those that have been “hidden” in the background, with something worthwhile to share with the others and the world, this is their time to be recognized and be of service to humanity, from a perspective of having a desire and willingness to help others. To affirm one’s ability to care about the less fortunate is the challenge. Therefore, if this affirmation as follows can be remembered by at least some: “To the degree I see another’s worthiness of prosperity, I too am prosperous. Another’s need is my command; my needs are already the command of the Infinite.” These are the people that will benefit most in the years to come and are likely to survive the “winds of change.” They will come to realize and experience their true purpose in life

Greeks refuse plan for German bailout Commissioner

Greek officials have reacted angrily to a leaked German proposal for an EU budget commissioner with veto powers over Greek taxes and spending.

The Greek government said it must remain in control of its own budget.

The European Commission says it wants to reinforce its monitoring of Greek finances, but Greece should retain sovereign control.

Meanwhile, Greece and its private investors are close to a deal which will pave the way for a second bailout.

Negotiators say a tentative agreement could be finalised next week.

Greece must reach agreement in the next few days in order to receive the next tranche of funds from its first bailout.

It needs the money to pay off a significant number of bondholders whose bonds mature in March. Without the bailout funds, Greece could be forced into an uncontrolled default from the euro.

Azerbaijan has been known as the Land Of Fire for a while now and the symbol of fire and flames is used extensively across the country. The people of Azerbaijan also take great pride in this association with fire.

"Since the dawn of time, mankind has come together around fire to communicate through the telling of stories, song and dance. The Eurovision Song Contest is where people come together to celebrate and communicate through song and dance," the creators explained the idea behind the theme art.

The World Needs More Dreamers

Have you ever had a goal, dream or vision that you shared with someone only to be told all the different reasons that it would not be possible. Your friends and family probably mean well, but we want to encourage you to pursue those things that ignite your soul and spirit.
Today we share a message from John Maxwell that will shed light on why most dreams never take flight,

Most of us never see our dreams come true. Instead of soaring through the clouds, our dreams languish like a broken-down airplane confined to its hangar. Through life, I have come to identify five common reasons why dreams don’t take flight.

1. We Have Been Discouraged from Dreaming by Others

We have to pilot our own dreams; we cannot entrust them to anyone else. People who aren’t following their own dreams resent us pursuing ours. Such people feel inadequate when we succeed, so they try to drag us down.

If we listen to external voices, then we allow our dreams to be hijacked. At some point, other people will place limitations on us by doubting our abilities. When surrounded by the turbulence of criticism, we have to grasp the controls tightly to keep from being knocked off course.

2. We Are Hindered by Past Disappointments and Hurts

In the movie Top Gun, Tom Cruise plays Maverick, a young, talented, and cocky aviator who dreams of being the premier pilot in the U.S. Navy. In the film’s opening scenes, Maverick showcases his flying ability but also displays a knack for pushing the envelope with regard to safety. Midway through the movie, Maverick’s characteristic aggression spells disaster. His plane crashes, killing his best friend and co-pilot.

Although cleared of wrongdoing, the painful memory of the accident haunts Maverick. He quits taking risks and loses his edge. Struggling to regain his poise, he considers giving up on his dream. Although the incident nearly wrecks Maverick’s career, he eventually reaches within to find the strength to return to the sky.

Like Maverick, many of us live with the memory of failure embedded in our psyche. Perhaps a business we started went broke, or we were fired from a position of leadership. Disappointment is the gap that exists between expectation and reality, and all of us have encountered that gap. Failure is a necessary and natural part of life, but if we’re going to attain our dreams, then, like Maverick, we have to summon the courage to deal with past hurts.

3. We Fall into the Habit of Settling for Average

Average is the norm for a reason. Being exceptional demands extra effort, sustained inspiration, and uncommon discipline. When we attempt to give flight to our dreams, we have to overcome the weight of opposition. Like gravity, life’s circumstances constantly pull on our dreams, tugging us down to mediocrity.

Most of us don’t pay the price to overcome the opposition to our dreams. We may start out inspired, but through time we fatigue. Although never intending to abandon our dreams, we begin to make concessions here and there. Through time, our lives become mundane, and our dreams slip away.

4. We Lack the Confidence Needed to Pursue Our Dreams

Dreams are fragile. They will be buffeted by assaults from all sides. As such, they must be supplied with the extra strength of self-confidence.

In Amelia Earhart’s day, women were not supposed to fly airplanes. If she had lacked self-assurance, she never would have even attempted to be a pilot. Instead, Earhart confidently chased after her dream, and she was rewarded with both fulfillment and fame.

5. We Lack the Imagination to Dream

For thousands of years, mankind traveled along the ground: by foot, by horse-and-buggy, by locomotive, and eventually by automobile. Thanks to the dreams of Orville and Wilbur Wright, we now hop across oceans in a matter of hours. The imaginative brothers overcame ridicule and doubt to pioneer human flight, and the world has never been the same.

Many of us play small because we do not allow ourselves to dream. We trap ourselves in reality and never dare to go beyond what we can see with our eyes. Imagination lifts us beyond average by giving us a vision of life that surpasses what we are experiencing currently.

Dreams infuse our spirit with energy and spur us on to greatness.

So, what's your dream?

Solar Storm travels to earth

Following one of the longest and weakest periods of activity in many cycles, the Sun is brimming with activity again. In late January 2012, our nearest star offered a preview of what may be to come in the solar maximum of 2012–13. The storm has the potential to disrupt some communications and satellite systems and to bring auroras to high-latitude skies.
The images above show a solar flare as observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) at 03:27, 03:42, and 04:12 Universal Time (Greenwich Time) on January 23. Note the brightening of the solar surface as gas was superheated and magnetically supercharged. By the third (right) image, a stream of solar material is seen flowing off into space above the hot spot, likely solar protons and a coronal mass ejection. Click on the enlarged images and movies for a wider view.
The high-latitude solar flare was measured as M8.7 in intensity, just below the most intense “X class” of flares. The eruption sent a stream of fast-moving, highly energetic protons toward Earth, provoking the most intense solar energetic particle storm—an S3 on NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center’s scale—since 2005.
The flare was accompanied by a coronal mass ejection (CME), a cloud of solar plasma that was ejected from the solar atmosphere in the direction of Earth. The CME was observed by the STEREO and SOHO spacecraft with an initial speed of more than 2,000 kilometers (1,400 miles) per second. It was estimated to reach Earth sometime on January 24 and Mars on January 25. NOAA forecasters were predicting a G2 geomagnetic storm, though a G3 was possible.
Solar flares and CMEs are not a danger to humans on Earth's surface, as the planet's magnetic field (magnetosphere) and atmosphere deflect and absorb the solar energy and particles. The sun storms can pose some risks to astronauts, and they can upset the electronics and transmissions on science, military, and communications satellites. Closer to Earth's surface, solar activity can cause disruptions of radio signals (particularly HF), provide a small dose of radiation to passengers on high-latitude flights, and provoke auroras (northern and southern lights).
The storm is impressive by recent standards, but nowhere near the maximum intensities often generated at the height of the solar cycle. “I would expect that we will see more storms like this one or even bigger as we get closer to solar maximum,” said Michael Hesse, chief of heliophysics at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
