Study: Obese women have more mental roadblocks to weight loss

But obese women may have more roadblocks. A study presented at the Obesity Society's meeting in Phoenix this month found that they create more mental barriers that keep them from exercising than normal or underweight women. Researchers from the Center for Obesity Research and Education and the kinesiology department at Temple University in Philadelphia surveyed 105 overweight and obese women and 173 normal and underweight women in a home-based exercise promotion trial.

Report: Some Bottled Water Not So Pure

Bottled water is widely considered to be a purer choice than tap water, but a new investigation finds that this isn't always the case. In its test of 10 best-selling brands of bottled water, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found mixtures of 38 different pollutants including bacteria, fertilizer, and industrial chemicals in some of the tested brands at levels that were similar to tap water.

Nicotine found to spur breast cancer growth

Nicotine, whether absorbed by smoking cigarettes or inhaling second-hand smoke, may promote tumor growth and the spread of breast cancer, a study found. Nicotine made breast cancer cells more likely to multiply and migrate in laboratory tests, according to the study published in yesterday's issue of the journal Cancer Research. Such evidence also suggests that nicotine given to help people stop smoking should be used cautiously.

Atlantic City's casino smoking ban now in effect

The ban is due to last for at least 12 days but could then be put on hold for a year if the mayor signs a measure delaying it. Medicos worried over side effects of cervical cancer vaccine

New Delhi: In India alone 74,000 women die every year from cervical cancer and two hundred new cases are reported every day. A vaccine called Gardasil, approved two years ago by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in girls from the age of nine up to 26 has just arrived in India. Gynaecological Oncologist, Dr Suresh Kumarasamy says, "It's a vaccine that prevents the infection that causes the cervical cancer."

Steroids help in quicker recovery from pneumonia

Steroids often used in treating inflammation caused by bacterial meningitis also speed up recovery from pneumonia, according to a new study. University of Texas (UT) Southwestern researchers have showed that mice infected with a type of severe bacterial pneumonia and subsequently treated with steroids and antibiotics recovered faster, with far less inflammation in their lungs than mice treated with antibiotics alone.

Heart Attack, Not Crash Kills Pekin Woman

An 84 year old Pekin woman apparently died of a heart attack before her car crashed into another this morning. Tazewell County Coroner Dennis Conover said a witness had seen Iola Preston slump in her seat before her vehicle pulled onto Route 29 from Brinkman Drive in Pekin. Iola Preston's vehicle was struck by an on–coming pickup truck after it pulled onto Route 29. Conover said an autopsy confirmed the woman's death was due to a heart condition.

Vaccine 'could end Nigeria polio'
