If the heart becomes diseased during its embryonic development, it can regenerate itself to such an extent that it is fully functional by birth, provided some of the heart cells remain healthy. Jorg-Detlef Drenckhahn of the Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine
(MDC) Berlin-Buch made this discovery together with colleagues from Australia.

But obese women may have more roadblocks. A study presented at the Obesity Society's meeting in Phoenix this month found that they create more mental barriers that keep them from exercising than normal or underweight women. Researchers from the Center for Obesity Research and Education and the kinesiology department at Temple University in Philadelphia surveyed 105 overweight and obese women and 173 normal and underweight women in a home-based exercise promotion trial.

Bottled water is widely considered to be a purer choice than tap water, but a new investigation finds that this isn't always the case. In its test of 10 best-selling brands of bottled water, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found mixtures of 38 different pollutants including bacteria, fertilizer, and industrial chemicals in some of the tested brands at levels that were similar to tap water.

Nicotine, whether absorbed by smoking cigarettes or inhaling second-hand smoke, may promote tumor growth and the spread of breast cancer, a study found. Nicotine made breast cancer cells more likely to multiply and migrate in laboratory tests, according to the study published in yesterday's issue of the journal Cancer Research. Such evidence also suggests that nicotine given to help people stop smoking should be used cautiously.

amblers were barred from lighting up Wednesday when a blanket smoking ban went into effect over the objections of the casino industry. The ban is due to last for at least 12 days but could then be put on hold for a year if the mayor signs a measure delaying it. For Gary Noa, a dealer who started his shift at Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino around 4 a.m., it was "one of the greatest nights I've seen in the casino business."

New Delhi: In India alone 74,000 women die every year from cervical cancer and two hundred new cases are reported every day. A vaccine called Gardasil, approved two years ago by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in girls from the age of nine up to 26 has just arrived in India. Gynaecological Oncologist, Dr Suresh Kumarasamy says, "It's a vaccine that prevents the infection that causes the cervical cancer."

University of Texas (UT) Southwestern researchers have showed that mice infected with a type of severe bacterial pneumonia and subsequently treated with steroids and antibiotics recovered faster, with far less inflammation in their lungs than mice treated with antibiotics alone.

Having a hip replaced involves major surgery, and you should lighten your activity load for as long as your doctor recommends. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons offers these suggestions to help make your recovery easier: * Keep items that you use often within close reach, so you won't have to stretch or bend for them. * Arrange your furniture to accommodate your walker or crutches, and make your primary room doesn't require climbing stairs.

An 84 year old Pekin woman apparently died of a heart attack before her car crashed into another this morning. Tazewell County Coroner Dennis Conover said a witness had seen Iola Preston slump in her seat before her vehicle pulled onto Route 29 from Brinkman Drive in Pekin. Iola Preston's vehicle was struck by an on–coming pickup truck after it pulled onto Route 29. Conover said an autopsy confirmed the woman's death was due to a heart condition.

Polio could be wiped out in Nigeria - one of the world's last blackspots of the disease - thanks to an improved vaccine, research suggests. An Imperial College London team found a recently introduced polio jab is four times more effective at protecting children than previous vaccines. They say it could eradicate type 1 polio - the most common form - in Nigeria if it reaches enough children.

The report, jointly released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and Cancer Australia, revealed exactly how common Australia's most diagnosed cancer, non melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), is.
